It's fair to say that Lee Chang-dong is one of the leading lights in South Korean cinema, if not cinema in general, though his relatively sparse output over the last decade leaves us yearning for more. His debut made a quarter of a century ago, while not as accomplished as his subsequent five films, features many of the themes that would appear throughout his oeuvre, and serves as a strong foundation for the rest of his work to build on.

Bring Me the Horizon have unveiled the new song “Kool-Aid,” the latest single from their forthcoming album Post Human: NeX GEn.
While not as crushing as the band’s early deathcore years, the song hits hard compared to some of the UK act’s more recent pop-inspired output. Singer Oli Sykes goes full-scream mode at certain points in the track, as he sings over some heavy riffage.
Post Human: NeX GEn was originally set to arrive in September 2023, but was indefinitely delayed. A new press release states that the album will “be released this year, with the official release date forthcoming.”
“Kool-Aid” is the first song Bring Me the Horizon have released since announcing the departure of keyboardist/programmer Jordan Fish in late December. It’s unclear if he played on the track, but a new band photo (see above) accompanying the song doesn’t include Fish.

While it doesn’t get too much attention today, John Lennon‘s “Instant Karma!” has some of the most interesting lyrics of the “Imagine” singer‘s career. John explained his feelings about karma as a concept. He also related “Instant Karma!” to a rough patch in his marriage to Yoko Ono. “Instant Karma!” became a big hit in the United States and the United Kingdom, and it appeared on an album with a bizarre name.
John Lennon’s ‘Instant Karma!’ was taking a ‘cosmic’ concept and bringing it down to earth
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John discussed his feelings on a certain metaphysical concept. “It’s like what they say about karma,” he said. “If you don’t get it right in this lifetime, you have to come back and go through it again.

Robin Wagner, a set designer who worked on more than 50 Broadway plays and musicals over a 50-year career and won three Tony Awards for best scenic design, has died. He was 89.
Wagner died in his sleep on Monday in New York City, publicist Matt Polk told The Hollywood Reporter after receiving confirmation from Wagner’s daughter Christie Wagner Lee.
His Broadway play and musical design credits between 1961 and 2012 included the original productions of Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Angels in America, Victoria/Victoria, The Producers, The Boy From Oz, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street and Dreamgirls. Wagner also designed Crazy For You and Chess for London’s West End.

“Fish” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
A lovely piece of absurdist comedy, Jeremy Hsing's “Fish” oozes charm with its quirky take on familial relationships and reconciliation. As a comedy, the short film shines thanks to its purposely stilted line delivery and the expressive personality of its star, Patrick Zhang. Furthermore, the work shows purposeful restraint to still keep that cinematic edge without wandering into the realm of parody.

Since he first started appearing in film serials in the 1940s, Batman fans have been blessed with many great movie and TV depictions of the Dark Knight, with recent blockbuster "The Batman" being but one example. As a hero without superpowers, Batman lends himself particularly well to pseudo-realistic interpretations of the Christopher Nolan kind. Villains like the Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Ra's al Ghul, Scarecrow, Bane, Harley Quinn, and Killer Croc have all made the transition from comic books to live-action films. But some of them have turned out better than others, and Batman has an even deeper bench of colorful foes who have thrived best onscreen in animated form.
When "Batman: The Animated Series" premiered on Fox on September 5, 1992, kids were just getting back to school after the summer of "Batman Returns." For many, Danny Elfman's theme music and the show's one-minute opening...

(Updated with Reelz statement) More than two years after pulling the plug on Live Pd, A&e now wants to lock up and throw away the key on the revival series On Patrol: Live.

Two films released, another film shot, and Steven Soderbergh managed to still watch and read a decent amount in 2019. (Note to self: barely using his Twitter account probably helps.) So a favorite tradition continues with today’s release of his annual viewing and reading log on Extension 765, which has a surprise, oddity, or some-such at nearly every turn.
Favorites include: making it through all 181 hours of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young in seven days but taking nearly four months to finish Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace; Chinatown and Richard Lester movies appearing on yet another list; he, too, watching Fleabag; seeing a version of his next movie, Let Them All Talk, just under a month after principal photography commenced. And so on and so forth.

It's safe to say that The Ugly Duckling (1959), a decidedly weak Hammer films comedy, would have been utterly forgotten, except that it was rumored to be lost for decades. This always seemed both weird and unlikely for a film from the latter half of the twentieth century, and one that had been released by Columbia in the U.K. and U.S., but the film was a flop and was certainly unavailable after its initial release, which granted it a certain mystique.Though a Hammer film, directed by Lance Comfort (who would also make the more earnest horror flick Devils of Darkness), and though based on "ideas stolen from Robert Louis Stevenson"—specifically The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde—this is a broad, childish comedy, without many actual laughs, but it does have historical interest, and illuminates certain tendencies of Hammer and British films and society.Hulking...

"The Godfather" star Abe Vigoda has died, aged 94.
The character actor passed away in his sleep at his home in New Jersey on Tuesday morning (January 26), his daughter Carol Vigoda Fuchs tells The Associated Press.
The Brooklyn, New York native began acting in the theatre as a teen and went on to establish himself with parts in Broadway productions of Marat/Sade, The Man in the Glass Booth, Inquest, and Tough to Get Help.
However, his breakout role came after he was cast as veteran mobster Salvatore Tessio in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather in 1972.
He also featured in a flashback sequence at the end of The Godfather Part II, and later became known for his portrayal of Detective Sergeant Phil Fish on 1970s sitcom Barney Miller and its spin-off series, Fish.
Vigoda's other film credits include Cannonball Run II, Look Who's Talking, and Joe Versus the Volcano.

Vigoda toiled in films and TV without notable success until director Francis Ford Coppola cast him in the key role of Tessio, a mob lieutenant in the Corleone crime family in the 1972 classic "The Godfather". Tessio was one of the most trusted "employees" of the Corleone family but following the death of its patriarch Vito Corleone, Tessio is discovered to be planning the assassination of the new godfather, Michael Corleone. Memorably he is led away to his execution with typical understated emotion. Vigoda's stock in the film industry rose immediately and he became a popular character actor, appearing in such films as "The Cheap Detective", "The Don is Dead", "Newman's Law", "Look Who's Talking" and "The Cannonball Run II...

Abe Vigoda, the long-faced character actor best known for his turn as Salvatore Tessio in The Godfather and grumpy Detective Phil Fish on Barney Miller, died on Tuesday, The Associated Press reports. He was 94.
According to Vigoda's daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, the actor died in his sleep of old age at her home in Woodland Park, New Jersey. "This man was never sick," Fuchs said.

Abe Vigoda, the New York theatre and television actor who played Corleone family friend — and, ultimately, traitor — Sal Tessio in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather," died Tuesday morning "of old age," per the Associated Press. He was 94. Vigoda's appearances in 1972's "The Godfather" and 1974's "The Godfather Part II" secured his place in film history — "Tell Mike it was only business. I always liked him," he tells consigliere Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) after his plan to kill Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is discovered — but it was in television that the actor, with his average-Joe appearance and versatile skill set, worked for much of his career. As Det. Phil Fish in the long-running "Barney Miller" and a short-lived spinoff, "Fish," he became a stalwart of 1970s TV, and appeared in many of the era's most popular programs: "Kojack," "The Bionic Woman," "The Rockford...

Abe Vigoda, a veteran character actor best known for roles in "The Godfather" and sitcom "Barney Miller," has died. He was 94.
Vigoda, who passed away in New Jersey of natural causes, became known for his signature hangdog appearance, and was the repeated target of death hoaxes frequently touting his demise. That odd occurrence became a running joke throughout the latter half of his career.
The then-middle-aged actor was all but unknown when he landed the role of Tessio in 1972's "The Godfather," a part he reprised as part of a flashback in "The Godfather Part II" in 1974. He went on to appear in film such as "The Don Is Dead," "Newman's Law," "The Cheap Detective," "Joe Versus the Volcano," and "Jury Duty."
But television took up much of the rest of Vigoda's career, where he shone as always-on-the-verge-of-retiring Detective Phil Fish on beloved comedy series "Barney Miller." The character...

According to TMZ, legendary actor Abe Vigoda passed away today at the age of 94. Vigoda gained fame playing Sal Tessio in The Godfather but was perhaps best known for his role as Sgt. Phil Fish on the sitcom Barney Miller and its short-lived spinoff Fish. Vigoda was also famous for being misreported as dead. In 1982, People mistakenly referred to him as "the late Abe Vigoda." Vigoda, in turn, posed in a coffin for a funny photo shoot holding the erroneous magazine copy. In 1987, a TV reporter in Secaucus, New Jersey also called Vigoda "late." Since then, Vigoda mocked his strange press history in various appearances on David Letterman and Conan O'Brien's talk shows. Once he even got to scream at Letterman, "I'm not dead yet, you pinhead!" To honor the memory of Sgt. Fish, here's one of his many appearances with Conan O'Brien. Fast-forward to 7:20 to see him...

In a stunt both Phish fans and Fish fans can appreciate, a mystery man appeared onstage in a wombat suit at the band's recent Atlantic City show following a performance of the song "Wombat." He pulled off the furry head, and — perhaps Phish diehards could've guessed the twist here (the songs' lyrics go, "It's kinda like the theme to the fish TV show / You know, with Abe Vigoda") — revealed himself to actually be 92-year-old Abe Vigoda!Editor's note: This post initially stated that the amazing wombat-costumed hoofer in the second video and the cane-sporting wombat-costumed actor in the first video were one and the same. Abe Vigoda is many things, but Abe Vigoda is not a dancer.

Andrew salutes the barnstorming matinee adventure that was Gerry Anderson's Stingray...
"In all the shows I've made, I've always tried to make the opening titles exciting." - Gerry Anderson.
Has there ever been a more barnstorming title sequence than Stingray's?
When I told people I was going to do a retrospective on the show, they practically recited it verbatim, musical cue dialogue, or sang 'Mariiiiiiiinaaa, aqua Mariiiiiiiinaaa' at me (I felt so beautiful). The title sequences are fantastic, distinctive and memorable.
The tribal drums (a deliriously urgent cacophony); the crash-zoom on Commander Shaw's ambiguous growl; if these weren’t exciting enough they are followed by Explosions! Planes! An entire city becoming subterranean! A leaping submarine! A big...fish...thing, also leaping! Everything is being thrown at the screen in an attempt to get the viewer to sit down and watch for half an hour. It succeeds at the latter,...

Reinhold Weege, creator of the memorably quirky 1980s sitcom Night Court, has died. Weege was 62 and died of natural causes at his home in La Jolla. Weege also worked on Barney Miller, Mash, Park Place and on Fish, a short-lived spinoff of Barney Miller. He grew up in the Chicago area and worked as a newspaper reporter before breaking into TV on Barney Miller where he got his first Emmy nomination as a member of the production team in 1979. Populated by an assortment of oddballs, Night Court became a staple of NBC’s schedule from 1984 through 1990, part of the network’s powerhouse Thursday primetime lineup that included The Cosby Show, Family Ties and Cheers. The Warner Bros series also launched the careers of Harry Anderson, John Larroquette and Richard Moll. Nominated for multiple production and acting Emmys, the show brought Larroquette four consecutive Emmys for comedy supporting actor from 1985 through...

Like most children of the 1970s, television viewing was a big part of my week. Beginning at 7:30 Pm and ending two and-a-half hours later, my family’s Thursday nights consisted of That’s Hollywood, Mork and Mindy, Angie, Barney Miller, and Carter Country. Not having seen Barney Miller until well into its sixth season, I just assumed that the entire show took place in the police station. Now that the show’s entire series is available in a DVD box set, courtesy of the fine folks at Shout! Factory, my initial impressions of the show were proven wrong. The pilot episode features Barney Miller’s family, specifically his wife, played with charm by Barbara Barrie. Abe Vigoda, Maxwell Gail, and Ron Glass appear from the get-go, and guest star Chu Chu Malave, who played Maria’s boyfriend who tackles...

Price: DVD $159.99
Studio: Shout! Factory
New York City's 12th Precinct is abuzz in Barney Miller.
Airing on ABC TV from 1974 through 1982, Barney Miller remains one of television’s liveliest New York-based situation comedies of the 1970s. That said, Barney Miller: The Complete Series has a lot of life pumping through its veins!
The classic show is set in a New York City police station in Greenwich Village, a colorful, bustling place filled with a mix of cops, detectives and administrators of a whole lot of ethnic and racial types (Puerto Ricans, Jews, African-Americans, Asians, Poles, you name it).
Hal Linden stars in the series as the titular Barney Miller. As the precinct’s captain, Barney somehow manages to maintain order over this group of inner-city law enforcers, who are undeniably good at their jobs but are always looking for something else to do. (A little gambling,...

Steve Landesberg, best known to television audiences as Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich on the '70s sitcom "Barney Miller," died today following a long battle with cancer. He was 65 years old.
Landesberg joined the regular cast of "Barney Miller" in its second season, distinguishing Dietrich from the rest of the Greenwich Village police station's motley crew of detectives by making him the intellectual straight man and a likable know-it-all. Although movie buffs may recognize Landesberg from his recent appearance in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, in which he played Peter Bretter's pediatrician, the veteran character actor portrayed Dietrich on the classic ABC sitcom until the end of the series' run in 1982. Landesberg even reprised the role for the short-lived "Barney Miller" spinoff "Fish," a vehicle for fellow castmember Abe Vigoda.
Born November 23, 1945, in New York, NY, Landesberg's father owned a grocery store, and his mother was a milliner. Landesberg started out in show business doing stand-up, and he also performed with an improvisational group called The New York Stickball Team.
After "Barney Miller" went off the air, the actor did extensive voice-over work, as well as making numerous guest appearances on a variety of television series including "The Golden Girls," "Seinfeld,""Everybody Hates Chris," and a featured guest appearance in an episode of A&E's "The Cleaner." His most recent regular role was Dr. Myron Finkelstein on the Starz original comedy "Head Case," for which he co-wrote seven episodes.
Landesberg is also credited with the quote "Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense."...

You may have seen the candy commercial in which two old folks are slammed into the mud during a pickup football game. Betty White and Abe Vigoda are the "old folks," which is supposed to be what happens to young people who don't keep up their sugar rush by eating candy bars. It's a funny ad, but (forgive my rudeness), I couldn't help thinking: "Good night, how old are they? They've looked the same age forever."
Ms. White, for the record, is 88, and Mr. Vigoda just turned 89. When I first saw them on television -- Ms. White as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Mr. Vigoda as Detective Fish on Barney Miller (I didn't catch up with The Godfather until later) -- I was a much younger lad and they looked old and wizened to my eyes. Now that I'm middle-aged myself, they hardly seem to have aged at all.
