Martin Short Hurls His Way Into Our Hearts
Cementhead was the humanizing story about a hockey goon and the insanity of the waning Canadian senior ice hockey movement back in the seventies. I guess, it could also be said that it picked up where "Slap Shot" left off, but this flick wasn't anywhere near the showstopper the latter was.
Being made for Canadian TV (CBC), the film naturally featured such familiar CBC personalities as Ken James, Kenneth Welsh, Robin Ward, Sean McCann, Colleen Collins and Kate Lynch. Real NHL player Eric Nesterenko launches his cinematic career, which mercifully ended with Rob Lowe in another stellar celluloid hockey classic, "Youngblood."
The best surprise of "Cementhead" is that comedic veteran of TV and movies, Martin Short, who plays the perpetually nauseous team goalie "Weepy." At this time in the seventies, Marty was best known from a TV commercial, where he used to ride a bike door-to-door singing "TANG every morning...." to the tune of POP Goes The Weasel. How far he has come!
The Assistant Director of "Cementhead" was none other than Michael Zenon (a.k.a. "Joe Two Rivers," as he was best known in front of the camera, from the immortal Canadian "Forest Rangers" TV show).
