- There are at least three versions of this film, the original 121 minutes vesion, a cut 104 minutes one, and a 141 minutes expanded video home version
- The expanded video version (141 minutes) includes many extended and additional scenes including the following (SPOILERS!): A longer exchange between Jacqueline Bisset and William Holden regarding his marriage proposal, much more footage surrounding Alex Karras' cockfighting endeavors and the revelry at Mona's bar, more crowd reaction scenes during the initial assault on the hotel by fireballs, more discussion between James Franciscus and William Holden about the imminent threat of the volcano, a scene between Veronica Hamel and James Franciscus about how severe the danger really is, a scene in which James Franciscus tells Edward Albert that they are half brothers, a scene between Edward Albert and Barbara Carrera in which she admits she loves James Franciscus and a far longer caravan scene which includes various conversations amongst all the survivors as they are driving/riding to safety.
- The Warner Brothers R1 DVD cut of this movie is 106 minutes long. This is 2 minutes longer than the known 104 minute trimmed down cut.
- The 104 minute cut is missing the following scene: an exchange between Burgess Meredith's character and his wife. She tells him to go on without her and dies in his arms. In the 104 minute cut, there's just a shot of them walking and she stops and says she has to rest. Then, it cuts back eventually to her already dead and he says her heart gave out on her.
