ABC’s groundbreaking family drama Life Goes On is getting a new lease on you-know-what.
Warner Bros. Television is developing a revival of the ’90s series, with original cast member Kellie Martin (Becca) set to star and produce. Chad Lowe, whose HIV-positive character Jesse died in the original show, will return solely as a producer. (An earlier version of this story hinted at a possible on screen return for Lowe, but a Warner Bros. rep has since shot down that speculation.)

Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings tackled a wide array of issues surrounding the streaming giant during a packed 30-minute keynote session at the New York Times‘ DealBook conference Wednesday.
Asked about Topic A, the unprecedented wave of streaming competition coming from Apple and Disney this month and then WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal next year, Hastings reiterated his confidence in his company. Reprising the sentiment he has expressed on recent earnings calls and other public appearances, he said customers would subscribe to several services. Subscription numbers, though, should not be the metric being tracked, he argued.
“The real measurement will be time,” he told moderator Andrew Ross Sorkin. “How do consumers vote with their evenings?”
He also noted that Disney is not planning to report revenue for its Disney+ business as a unit.
Apple and traditional media players have spotted Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and YouTube more than a decade, Hastings said.

Imax CEO Rich Gelfond and the company’s entertainment chief Megan Colligan both see dramatic changes coming to traditional release windows, though it may take a while.
“I do think it’s inevitable over time that the windows get shorter in some way,” Gelfond said. “Around town, although people don’t talk about it a lot, there have been discussions going on. … At some point they’re going to reach an accommodation.”
Colligan, who had a lengthy executive tenure at Paramount, gained additional insight while working as a consultant for streaming services before joining Imax in 2018. “We’ll see a change at some point,” she said. “Change is probably inevitable. All parties are trying to just figure out what the right change is. The belief that’s commonly held is that you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.” Aside from Netflix, she continued, “there’s a much...

A very public controversy at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 involving Netflix, the event’s organizers, and the French film industry continues to rage in 2018. On the eve of the festival revealing its main lineup in April, Netflix said it was removing its titles from consideration. After last year’s flap, the festival had said it would not accept Netflix movies in competition unless they were open to theatrical distribution in France.
A regulation long on the books in France is the source of the upset. Under an arcane windowing system, films cannot play on Svod services until 36 months after their theatrical release. Clearly the Netflix straight-to-platform strategy is not built to fit that model. And while the industry largely supports updating the rules, the exhibition sector—led by lobby La Fédération Nationale des Cinémas Français (Fncf)—is staunchly opposed.
