A decade into her solo career, Beyoncé effectively evaded irrelevancy by wresting control of her own narrative. After her 2011 album 4 failed to produce a Top 10 hit—to date, her only album to do so—the singer began dropping albums without any pre-release promotion, sidestepping chart expectations and reimagining the traditional pop album release strategy. Since then, she’s done few interviews and often glides into awards shows donning dark shades and a straight face, shrewdly creating a superstar mystique in the vein of Michael Jackson and Prince.
That approach, thankfully, has been accompanied by some of Beyoncé’s most creative, political, and inspired work to date. Her 2016 visual album Lemonade drew on her personal experiences as a Black woman to comment on feminism and racism in the Me Too and Black Lives Matter era, while its follow-up, 2022’s Renaissance, kept the focus squarely on the music, inspired by and dedicated...

Eli Roth's 2023 slasher film "Thanksgiving" famously started its life back in 2007 in the form of a fake trailer sandwiched in between Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof," two movies released as a single mega-feature called "Grindhouse." The goal of "Grindhouse" was to recreate the experience of seeing a cheap exploitation double-feature in a run-down New York theater in the early 1980s, complete with film scratches, missing reels, and several previews for upcoming ultra-salacious genre movies. The trailers were all fake at the time, but since 2007, the trailers for "Machete," "Hobo with a Shotgun," and "Thanksgiving" have been made into real movies.
Roth, as the director's fans know, is a voracious cineaste, and has likely spent more time watching movies than most people. He also wears his influences on his sleeve; in the credits for Roth's 2013 cannibal film "The Green Inferno," he includes a list...

Animal Movie Review Quicker: Sandeep Reddy Vanga Delivers Kabir Singh On Steroids With Ranbir Kapoor & No… (Picture Credit: T-Series/Youtube)
It’s finally Animal Day today, and the film is going down in history, as many would mention while discussing “how to market a film like a pro.” The whole ‘Alpha Male’ vibe is the mightiest weapon this film holds, and that would only help build the initial buzz, but what matters after the first Monday is the content. Has Sandeep Reddy Vanga retained the entertainment factor he established during his Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh phase? Let’s analyze!
Please note I’m writing this after the first half of the film, and there’s still 50% of it I’ll watch to come to the full review. But here are some random thoughts about where I think this is going from here.

October is usually thought of as the prime time for horror, but the best horror movie of 2023 — for that matter, the most deliriously entertaining horror movie since Wes Craven‘s original “Scream” — arrives not for Halloween but for Thanksgiving. It’s a movie horror fans have been eagerly anticipating ever since director Eli Roth created a fake “Thanksgiving” trailer for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s “Grindhouse” in 2007, and the feature version that Roth and writer Jeff Rendell have extrapolated from that hilarious and gory short is well worth the wait. Their “Thanksgiving” is an ingeniously structured, elegantly composed thrill machine. It’s also a gleeful assault on good taste; it’s what you get when a 1970s or ’80s Canadian tax shelter thriller like “Prom Night” or “My Bloody Valentine” is directed by a true artist.

On the one-year anniversary of Renaissance, Beyoncé brought the album’s lyrics to life — especially “category: bad bitch, I’m thе bar” — with a stunning performance proving why she’s one of one, number one and the only one. Don’t even waste your time trying to compete with her.
The icon was energetic and vibrant during her three-hour show Saturday night, running through Renaissance favorites like “Alien Superstar” and “Cuff It,” as well as past hits and album cuts, like “My Power,” where Blue Ivy earned a rousing applause as she joined her mother to perform extended choreography.

When college friends Courtney L. Branch and Noel Braham launched the Micheaux Film Festival five years ago, the event, designed to put a spotlight on diverse and underrepresented creators, was limited to just a one-day affair.
“Really, [we] just wanted to do it as a proof of concept to see if this is something that people wanted, that they needed,” Branch told The Hollywood Reporter. “And they have responded in droves.”
The now-weeklong festival, which wraps on Sunday, is a testament to how much it has grown and the variety of the projects involved. Key premieres included Scrap, a film starring Vivian Kerr and Anthony Rapp about a single houseless mother; The Good Egg about a woman grappling with infertility who gets entangled with a con artist; and the documentary Bad Things Happen in Philadelphia about the effects of gun violence in the city.

The Renaissance world tour kicked off today in Stockholm, Sweden, with Beyoncé billed as the opening act, main act, and encore act. To be fair, she has two decades’ worth of ground to cover, which she fittingly acknowledged by opening the show with “Dangerously in Love,” the title track from her debut solo album released 20 years ago. It also marked her first live performance of the song in over a decade.

Beyoncé has officially kicked off her "Renaissance" World Tour. The megastar launched the highly anticipated event on May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden, kicking off a three-hour set without an opening act. She's set to travel through Europe through June before coming to North America over the summer, completing over 40 dates by the time the tour is through.
The tour is Beyoncé's first since 2018's "On the Run" tour with Jay-Z. Her last solo tour was in support of 2016's "Lemonade," so needless to say, the "Renaissance" tour is a major event - and Forbes has predicted that it could gross up to $2.6 billion by the time it's complete, making it one of the most profitable tours ever. It also marks Beyoncé's first live performance since 2018 other than a one-off appearance in Dubai in January, where she appeared alongside her oldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.
Ahead, check out the full set list...

Beyoncé‘s “Halo” was co-written by a rock star. He penned lyrics for the bridge of the song. Subsequently, Queen B decided to take the song in another direction.

Princess Nokia has readied a new EP called i love you but this is goodbye. The seven-song project drops March 14th via Arista Records, and ahead of its release, the artist has shared a new song called “complicated.”
As its name suggests, i love you but this is goodbye is a breakup EP. Musically, a press release describes the project as a return to Princess Nokia’s roots — specifically her 2014 debut Metallic Butterfly, which means you can expect more experimental trip-hop from the New York artist.
While the previous single “closure” veers toward pop punk with sweetly sung vocals, “complicated” goes back to Princess Nokia’s classic flow. “Falling apart and I cannot take it/ You make it complicated,” she sighs, over snappy electronic beats. Listen to the track and check out the artwork for i love you but this is goodbye below.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Princess Nokia has offered “closure,” a saccharine new single that appreciates a lost love for what it was — a welcome moment in time.
“You came at the right time and I let you/ You came at the right time, you were meant to,” Princess Nokia sings, reaching for her upper register rather than opting for her usual laid-back flow. Soon after, the song explodes into a fuzzed out, melodic guitar riff as the artist looks back on the relationship, more content than wistful. “I wrote you this album for my closure,” she sings, ready to move on. Listen to Princess Nokia’s “closure” below.
Last year, Princess Nokia shared a handful of singles, “Diva” and “No Effort.” In 2020, she put out the dueling albums Everything Sucks and Everything Is Beautiful, some of the best releases of the year.

Exclusive: Vince Marcello (The Kissing Booth trilogy) is set to showrun and executive produce Diva, a new drama series inspired by the exploits of real-life French heroine Julie d’Aubigny, from iGeneration Studios. Marcello co-created the series with Max Benitz — who will serve as its head writer — and will also direct a portion of its episodes.
Billed as a period adventure-drama told through a very contemporary lens, Diva chronicles D’Aubigny’s rise from an impoverished servant in 1680s France to battle rogues and royalty alike, in her quest to conquer the stage as the opera singer otherwise known as La Maupin. The show set amidst some of Europe’s most iconic settings, including Louis Xiv’s Palace of Versailles, the backstreets of Paris and Marseille, and the lavender-filled hillsides of Provence, will then watch as La Maupin finds fame, fortune and love – with both men and women – along the way.

The heat wave in Los Angeles couldn’t get in the way of the church of Sheryl Lee Ralph.
The “Abbott Elementary” actor was met with a standing ovation in Beverly Hills on Sunday at the Creative Coalition’s Television Humanitarian Awards Gala Luncheon, where she was an honoree. Hosted by Variety‘s Marc Malkin, the ceremony was meant to celebrate a number of figures working in the TV industry who also devote their time to worthy social causes. Ralph received the honor, presented to her by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Reid Scott, for her work with Diva.
She began her acceptance speech with a powerful rendition of Dianne Reeves’ “Endangered Species: “I am an endangered species / But I sing no victim’s song / I am a woman I am an artist / And I know where my voice belongs.”

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, are sitting on a park bench on the grounds of the Palais Royal.
The former secretary of state and US presidential nominee turns to her daughter and asks: “Do you know what happens if you drink too much tea in Paris?”
Chelsea, an International Relations DPhil who is also a children’s author and global health advocate, appears bewildered.
“You’re-a-peein’,” her mother – once the most powerful woman in politics – tells her with a guffaw.
Except the real punchline is that this is a scene from their new Apple TV Plus series called Gutsy. The joke, if you think about it, is that this is what one of the savviest and most successful people in American life has been reduced to doing for work.

French director Jean-Jacques Beineix, who made waves with stylish works of 1980s cinema including “Diva” and “Betty Blue,” died Thursday at 75.
He died at home in Paris after a long illness, his brother told Le Monde.
Beineix started out as an assistant director to filmmakers including Claude Berri, Rene Clement and Jerry Lewis. After making a short film, he made his feature debut in 1981 with “Diva,” which won the Cesar for best first feature and three more Cesar awards. The story revolves around a young postman infatuated with an American opera singer who gets caught up in an international intrigue when he tries to make a bootleg recording of her performance.

It’s time to take another look at the famed Cinema du Look auteurs of 1980s and 1990s French cinema, and what better way to begin than revisiting its originator, who burned brightest (and then burnt out) — Jean-Jacques Beineix. Back in 2009, a box-set of Beineix’s six features, which ranged from 1981’s Diva to 2001’s Mortal Transfer allowed for a recuperation, but Criterion digitally restores his iconic juggernaut, 1986’s Betty Blue, to all of its pristine, color saturated glory.
Beineix picked up nine Cesar nods (winning Best Poster) and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, while introducing the world to the ferociously beautiful Beatrice Dalle, whose own public persona at times lived up to the unpredictable outbursts of her eponymous character—a woman who refused to be tethered to cultural expectations of appropriate feminine behavior despite the privilege of her exceptional beauty.…

“Sex, Eyes, & Mental Illness”
By Raymond Benson
What made the 1986 French picture, Betty Blue so striking were three things—the explicit sex on display, the mesmerizing eyes of lead actress Béatrice Dalle, and the film’s frank depiction of mental illness and its devastating effect on a relationship.
Director Jean-Jacques Beineix had burst onto the scene with the superb, quirky, and new New Wave crime picture, Diva (1981) that embraced not only the French New Wave of the early 1960s, but the early 1980s pop New Wave of music and visuals that were exploding in all mediums at that time. Diva was a critical and commercial hit with Western audiences, although Beineix’s follow-up, Moon in the Gutter (1983), was not. The filmmaker bounced back, though, with Betty Blue, which received a deserved Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film.

In the century since its founding in 1919, United Artists has made and distributed hundreds of films and pioneered business models — such as UA Classics — that continue to resonate in the entertainment industry.
From the founders to the period between the early ’50s through the late ’60s when Arthur Krim and Bob Benjamin ran the company, to the ’70s when David Picker called the shots, there was a simple focus and philosophy.

Kalen even swaps outfits akin to some of Beyoncé's most stunning video ensembles as he breaks it down, embodying the confidence and verve of the birthday girl. "To my muse and inspiration! Who am I kidding? I am fighting my way through the very-important Mueller Report, but all I can think about is Beyonce Knowles-Carter, that magnificent queen who dropped a two-hour film about her epic performance at Coachella a few days ago on Netflix.
Tear your eyes away, I dare you, from Beyonce, striding her imperial self down a pyramid stacked with African-American performers, her wavy blonde hair cascading to her waist, shorts cut high over generous thighs, green eyes glinting above a “you will obey” expression that suddenly melts into that smile.

Before you add any other superlative to her name, Beyoncé is, first and foremost, a performer. She spent her childhood being trained not just to be a great singer but to become the type of athletic vocalist who could sing while in constant, rapid, muscle-and-bone defying movement on a stage for hours. She would get the chance to show that off early with Destiny’s Child, and by the time she launched her solo career, her live abilities were otherworldly.

Netflix has released Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, which presents an intimate look at her historic 2018 Coachella performance that paid homage to America’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Interspersed with candid footage and interviews detailing the preparation and powerful intent behind her vision, Homecoming gives a peek into the process and emotional physical sacrifices it took to conceptualize and execute a performance of that magnitude that became a cultural movement. This stand-alone Netflix original is now available globally on Netflix.
As the first black woman to headline Coachella, Homecoming recognizes the African American visionaries who inspired Beyoncé, including Hbcu alums Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, activist Marian Wright Edelman, and scholar W.E.B. Du Bois, in addition to cultural luminaries such as Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Audre Lorde. Beyoncé’s personal knowledge of the relevance and celebration of HBCUs started with her father, Mathew Knowles, an alumnus of Fisk University.

Happy Tuesday, fellow Big Brother fans. Late yesterday evening, February 11, 2019, the Power Of Veto competition was finally played for this 6th round of Celebrity Big Brother season 2, and we have the results. Before we get into that, let's go over the events that led up to the Power of Veto competition. This round 6 began with the former NFL football player Ricky Williams winning the Head Of Household competition after former WWE Diva Natalie Eva Marie and comedian Tom Green got the eviction boot in last Friday night's Live double eviction episode. After that, Ricky immediately made it known that he was throwing Kandi and Dina up on the chopping block during a few of the conversations. Then surely enough that's what he did at his nomination ceremony that took place on Saturday February 9, 2019. From there, we just heard lots of conversations about who would take who to the final 2 and so on and so forth.

Natalya Neidhart doesn’t know why the name of “Total Divas” didn’t change to reflect WWE’s decision to rebrand the franchise’s Women’s Championship title. But the E! reality series star does know that there were discussions about swapping out the “Divas” when the female champs suddenly became “Superstars” back in 2016.

Seoul-based independent sales house Finecut has picked up international sales right to mystery thriller “Diva.” Starring Shin Min-a (“The Naked Kitchen”) and Lee You-young (“Yourself and Yours”), the drama is currently in production.
Finecut also represents “Nailed,” “Second Life” and “Too Hot to Die.” “Nailed” and “Life” are making their world premieres in the Busan Festival’s Korean Cinema Today — Panorama and New Currents competition, respectively. “Too Hot” is Finecut’s market premiere title.

Donna Summer was the queen of the disco, remembered for her pulsating music and soaring voice. Broadway veteran Lachanze has stepped into the diva’s platform shoes in “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” on Broadway. The actress is having so much fun in the role that she could well be adding another Tony to her mantle.
“Summer” utilizes a “concert of a lifetime” conceit to incorporate the entirety of the singer’s life and song catalogue. Three actresses play the singer at varying stages of her life: Duckling Donna (Storm Lever), Disco Donna (Ariana DeBose) and Diva Donna (Lachanze). Lachanze’s Diva Donna looks back on a life of triumphs and misfortunes, and at times even plays Summer’s mother Mary Gaines. The audience bops along to one disco chart topper after another as the singer’s often traumatic life unfolds.
