Giancarlo Esposito may be a big star now, but times were so tough in the aughts that he considered committing insurance fraud to help pay the bills.
During a recent interview on of SiriusXM’s Jim & Sam, The Gentleman star recalled a time in 2008 when he was feeling particular desperate about cash flow.
“My way out in my brain was, ‘hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?’ My wife had no idea why I was asking this stuff,” recalled Esposito. “I started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death by misadventure, [my family] would get the insurance. I had four kids. I wanted them to have a life. It was a hard moment in time. I literally thought of self-annihilation so they could survive. That’s how low I was.”

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
On September 6, 2020, the first day of principal photography on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise drove a motorbike off a mountain. Specifically, he drove a custom-made Honda Crf 250 off a purpose-built ramp on the side of Norway’s Helsetkopen mountain, a vertiginous rock face sat some 1,200 meters above sea level. Then he plunged 4,000 feet into the ravine below before opening his parachute barely 500 feet from the ground.
When he landed, director, Christopher Mc Quarrie, and the small crew of his Mission co-stars who had assembled to watch the seminal cinematic sequence from the safety of video village, breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then Cruise picked himself up and did it all again another seven times, just to make sure the footage was perfect.

Take those old records off the shelf because Risky Business is turning 40 this year. And not only is Tom Cruise – who played high schooler Joel Goodsen, who gets mixed up with a prostitute and her pimp – amazed by that, but he admits that he still dances around the house in his underwear as he famously did in Risky Business.
At the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise remembered where so much of his fame began, calling working on 1983’s Risky Business a “formative” experience. “He gave me the opening frame of that shot and he goes, ‘I want to start here, I want to move here,’ and he and I – Paul Brickman, great filmmaker – he and I talked about it, he said, ‘Here’s the choreography.’ Look, I grew up dancing in my underwear in my house, who didn’t? So I was like, I got this!

Tom Cruise was honoured for his nearly three decades of work as a producer, and “ Everything Everywhere All at Once ” solidified its status as the frontrunner for the best picture Oscar by taking the top prize at Saturday night’s Producers Guild of America Awards.
“We love you! We love you!” another Oscar favorite and one of the film’s stars, Ke Huy Quan, shouted gleefully from the stage as Jonathan Wang and the other producers of the multiversal dramedy accepted the award for best theatrical motion picture.
The award has proven to be perhaps the best indicator for what will win the top honour at the Oscars, with four of the past five and 11 of the past 14 PGA winners going on to win best picture.

Very few personalities in Hollywood are as controversial as Sean Penn. One of the most gifted actors of his generation, Penn’s also been a lightning rod for controversy, with his often antagonistic relationship with the press and sometimes misguided moves, such as his now infamous interview with drug baron El Chapo. Yet, he’s also a noted humanitarian, participating in rescue efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and being a tireless advocate for Haiti following the 2010 Earthquake. He’s also been an outspoken supporter of Ukrainian president Zelensky.
In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Celebrity, we look at the scope of Sean Penn’s career. We chart his earlier days as perhaps the most talented young actor to emerge in the early eighties, stealing scenes in Taps and later becoming a star thanks to turns in movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, At Close Range,...

Tom Cruise would rather be boring than lose control of an interview. He’s learned from his aberrations, whether jumping the couch or advising people not to take prescription drugs. And so, his participation in a May 18 MasterClass Conversation at Cannes could have been an extension of Paramount’s 68-page press kit for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which basically shoves aside director Joseph Kosinski to promote the film’s almighty producer (with lip service to Jerry Bruckheimer).

Tom Cruise showed just why he’s the biggest movie star in the world with his 45-minute masterclass at the Cannes Film Festival.
The sold-out crowd at the Grand Palais’ Debussy theater waited in line patiently for an hour under the blazing afternoon sun and could barely contain their impatience as festival director Thierry Fremaux introduced the event. They watched a montage of the actor’s most memorable scenes — set to Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra” — then broke out in frenzied applause during the famous lip-synching sequence from “Risky Business.”

Following the retrospective nature of the montage, the main thrust of Cruise’s narrative during the event was looking back at his career, with an emphasis on learning the craft of cinema.

When Tom Cruise landed his first starring role in 1981’s “Taps” opposite George C. Scott, he told the crowd at Cannes on Wednesday that he remembers thinking, “Please, if I could just do this for the rest of my life, I will never take it for granted.”
Over 40 years later, Cruise hasn’t stopped running, on screen or head-first into every public appearance to celebrate how much he loves the movies. In 2004 a paranormal reality series called Ghost Hunters debuted on the SyFy Channel. The series centered around two plumbers who traveled the world investigating paranormal claims on their spare time. Disney’s Marvel Studios released a batch of moody character portraits today as well as an interesting new featurette with a subtle message for any despairing Avengers fans out there: Don’t worry, life goes on after the dust settles.
Click on the photo above to launch a gallery of the posters, and watch the video below.
After months of a grim drumbeat, Marvel’s message was likely aimed at parents of younger fans who might have fretted about the dour outcome of a superhero movie that, in preview clips, has the emotional tones of a funeral in an ash-covered field on an overcast day. These are already grim days in the real world and the featurette seems to acknowledge that, at some point, true hero movies need moments of heroic uplift.
The message comes across in the promotional video from interviews with cast members and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. The pep talk was led by Chris Evans, who portrays the never-give-up hero Captain America: “They’ve truly leveled us, not just literally but morally and emotionally…the good thing is that it’s always easier to build people back up after they’ve been broken down. That’s what Marvel’s great at doing. It’s that shred of hope that everyone is looking for.”
The featurette also has footage from the upcoming Avengers: Endgame (April 26) as well as scenes from Avengers: Infinity War, the grim, beat-down epic that hit theaters last April and finished as 2018’s top-grossing global release ($2.05 billion worldwide). The movie ended, now infamously, with the tyrannical alien Thanos (Josh Brolin) snapping his fingers and erasing half of the universe’s living organisms, among them Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman).
In the months since the existential dust-up, Marvel fans have reacted with many emotions to the devastating sequence of events. Some, for instance, chided Chris Pratt via social media, others complained that Feige and the Russo Brothers directing tandem had gone too far by wantonly killing off such beloved heroes. Feige addressed that in the new promotional video: “The fans’ reaction to the end of Infinity War, when half their favorite characters turned to dust, really was indicative of how emotionally connected the world has gotten to these characters.”
In actuality, of course, the characters are alive on every toy aisle in America and will remain that way. The film was simply following in the grand tradition of the American comic book industry, which has “killed” every one of its major characters at least once and, in some unlucky cases, three or more times. The notion that Spider-Man might not return from the dead doesn’t hold up too well when you consider a trailer has already been released for his next solo-adventure film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and the footage contains neither zombies nor angels. It’s also worth noting that Peter Parker was back in action already in Sony’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (or at least he was in the first half of the film…).
The featurette starts to wind down with the space-marooned Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and a line that surely foreshadows a big bounce-back moment in the new film (“I know I said no more surprises but I was really hoping to pull off one last one…”) and it ends with a wink and a smile (via the first meeting of Chris Hemsworth’s mighty Thor and Brie Larson’s even mightier Captain Marvel). It’s a moment that fans are loving. There will be life after Endgame, the exchange reminds us. Will every hero survive the film, which is billed as the climatic chapter for the Marvel Studios saga to date? No, probably not. There’s a good chance, for instance, that Taps might be playing for Captain America) but an on-screen funeral is just career downtime for a hero. n the other side of Boot Hill, after all, is Reboot Pasture.
Here is the new featurette:

Jenny Lewis’ stellar songwriting chops were visible back in 2001 on Takeoffs and Landings, the first LP by Rilo Kiley, the band she co-fronted with Blake Sennett. They’ve only grown stronger since — and as her take on the Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle With Care” proved, she’s got a way with covers, too. To give some context to On The Line, her fourth solo LP, here are some highlights, past to present.

She's ready to be the next big star! According to a new report, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' 12-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise, has already "caught the acting bug" and wants to becomg an actress! A source told Ok! magazine — in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now! — that Suri seemingly decided she wants to follow in her parents' famous footsteps when she visited her mom on the set of her 2017 miniseries The Kennedys: After Camelot and saw Katie in-character as former first lady Jackie Kennedy. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) The source revealed that Suri couldn't get enough of "the hair, makeup, and wardrobe," at her mom's job and, since then, Katie has enrolled her daughter in acting classes. "She's signed Suri up for one-on-one classes with an acting coach, and she's getting private singing, and music classes too," the insider shared. Unfortunately, it seems that Suri's dad, Tom, thinks...

Tom Cruise was just 19 when he started living his dream.
In People’s new cover story, the star of Mission: Impossible—Fallout looks back on how he got his start.
“I’ve wanted to make movies since I was 4 years old,” says Cruise, now 56. “I used to cut grass and had all kinds of odd jobs to give money to my family, but also to save money so I could go to the movies. You didn’t have YouTube and we didn’t have film school. That was my film school.”

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. But his meteoric rise to stardom was more like Mission: Impossible than The Color of Money.
Over the past 30 years, Tom Cruise has remained one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Today he is best known as an edgy action movie star, but he made a career out of intense dramatic performances as well. Movies such as the Mission: Impossible franchise, Top Gun, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Edge of Tomorrow, and the Jack Reacher films highlight his action movie resume. His best loved dramatic roles were featured in films such as Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Rain Man, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, The Last Samurai, and Jerry Maguire. Cruise has been nominated for three Oscars, two for Best Actor in a leading role, and one for Best Actor in a supporting role.

Tom Cruise has been a consistently bankable and likeable A-lister for over three decades now. That doesn’t happen by accident. “Tom Cruise Movies” are films only possible with Cruise’s level of charisma, energy and youthful enthusiasm, and Most of Cruise’s movies are “Tom Cruise Movies.” And if anyone can jumpstart “The Mummy” franchise again, it’s Cruise. Here’s every film he’s starred in, ranked.
41. “Cocktail”
Cruise’s Type-a, adrenaline-fueled drive serves him very well in movies where the stakes are high. But “Cocktail” is just “Top Gun” behind a bar. The work-hard play-hard clichés at work here threatened to make Cruise the role model for handsome, affable, lame guys you swipe past on dating apps. Cruise smartly moved on from roles like this.
40. “Endless Love”
Tom Cruise has a tiny part in this Brooke Shields melodrama when he was just a squeaky-voiced teen, his first ever on-screen role.

There is no question that between today’s late afternoon Paramount presentation which he dominated, and tonight’s Pioneer Of The Year dinner at which he was honored, Tom Cruise simply owned CinemaCon today. The superstar effectively had the single film that will save Paramount this summer, and this exhibitors’ confab made him the first actor ever to win their top honor in the 77-year history of the organization which effectively takes care of its own and those most in need. I thought it was cool of Cruise in his acceptance speech to not only acknowledge that but to remember the Will Rogers organization used to pass around collection cups after the trailers played in movie theaters when the lights went up before the feature attraction.

A profoundly grateful Tom Cruise received the pioneer of the year award from the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation — the first actor to be so honored.
Cruise was feted Wednesday night on the third day of Cinemacon, the National Association of Theater Owners’ annual convention in Las Vegas. The pioneer of the year award is given to a member of the motion picture community to honor professional leadership, service, and commitment to philanthropy.
“I grew up going to the movies, and I wanted to make movies since I was 4,” Cruise said in his acceptance speech. “I’m very proud to be part of this family. We take care of our own, that’s what families do. I love what I do, and I will cherish this beautiful award.”

Alex Kurtzman knows his way around a franchise. The writer-director-producer had a hand in creating million-dollar tentpoles out of Transformers and Star Trek, in addition to scripting the second installment in The Amazing Spider-Man series. With his latest, a reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, he hopes to not only resurrect the iconic bandaged baddie, but spawn an entire cinematic universe of Universal Monster movies, to be known as the Dark Universe.
"It's like childbirth," Kurtzman told Et of the anticipation he feels over fans finally being able to see his take on The Mummy (in theaters now). "The head is crowning, so you're just waiting for the whole world to see your child. It's exciting! It's been a long journey."

More so than ever it seems, we've become increasingly obsessed with acknowledging the anniversaries of beloved movies, TV shows and music. Not that there's anything wrong with celebrating our pop culture past, mind you. In fact, for someone as nostalgic as myself, I completely embrace it. Which brings me to a little milestone of my own. This one, though, doesn't simply focus on a particular piece of celluloid, but instead, revolves around a certain actor whose work has been an enduring presence throughout my movie-going life.
For the last 30 years, not only have I sat and watched every single Tom Cruise film that has come out since 1986, I have done so in an actual, honest-to-goodness movie theater. That's a total of 33 silver screen experiences (34 if you count his Austin Powers in Goldmember cameo), including the latest, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Yeah, you might say I'm a fan.

Both Mel Gibson and Sean Penn broke out big in the summer of 1982. Gibson soared as a haunted loner in action thriller The Road Warrior and Penn stood out as a stoned high school student in the goofy comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Both had already shown their skills -- Gibson in Mad Max and Gallipoli, Penn in Taps -- and the roles they played in the following years showed the wide range of their dramatic talents. Thanks to the popular Mad Max and Lethal Weapon series, Gibson became known as an action star. He balanced that out with roles in intense dramas and light comedies, and eventually turned to filmmaking, winning two Academy Awards for Braveheart. His latest directorial project, the wartime drama Hacksaw Ridge, is due for release on November 4. For his...

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of John Huges as director.
John Hughes’ is one of the most influential filmmakers of the past few decades. His contributions as writer, director, and producer have created many well-loved and contemporary classic films. While his impact as a filmmaker in general overshadows his contributions just as a director, there are many commonalities between the films he directed versus the films he only contributed a script. As such, the trademarks considered below are meant to represent the films directed by John Hughes, but they can easily also apply to the films he contributed to, but did not direct.
Hughes’ career began as a writer for several advertising campaigns. He went on to join National Lampoon where he wrote several films including 1984’s Vacation,...

As Nichols kept Smith captive for seven hours, the pair slowly came to a crossroads between hope and despair. Smith had bonded with Nichols by reading aloud Rick Warren’s best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life.
The new film, Captive, based on Smith’s account of the ordeal in her book Unlikely Angel, tells the story of how this one-time meth addict overcame her vices to survive through the worst night of her life and forge a new, productive path for herself. Tom Cruise has come a very long way since his screen debut in Franc Zeffirelli’s Endless Love (1981). Thirty six movies and a whole lot of stardom later and he’s still the biggest movie star on the planet. He is perhaps, also the biggest film star in movie history. You’d be hard pushed to offer up any other actor that’s sustained that level of popularity and box office pull for that long. There is a good reason for this too. Cruise polarises opinion of course and there are those that would see his downfall, but in large part that’s due to all things that have little if nothing to do with Tom Cruise the filmmaker.
Being Tom Cruise must take a special kind of energy. So special in fact that he has sustained that level of dash for nigh on thirty years without letting up. And if Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,...

When Rosamund Pike was freaking out about starting to shoot Gone Girl, she turned to the Hollywood superstar, Tom Cruise for help.
Pike happened to be suffering from a nasty flu the night before cameras were set to roll on director David Fincher's adaptation of the novel of the same name. She had a 103-degree fever and threw up three times. To make matters even more intense, this would be the first time Pike would be on a movie set on the first day.

So she fired off an email to Cruise, her co-star in Jack Reacher. Pike said he wrote her back about his worries when he was an unknown shooting 1981's Taps. "Trust yourself,...

Tom Cruise stopped by the graduation ceremony of the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Acting School in California this past weekend to deliver a surprise speech, delighting everyone lucky enough to be in the room (except, perhaps, the poor tenured professor who had been planning for months to speak at commencement).
Cruise has a lot to say in ten minutes, but we've decided the following five tidbits from the speech are the most interesting — or at least entertaining — of all.
1.) He was always interested in "why?"
Becoming a successful actor - or at least, a believable actor - presumably requires an abnormal amount of empathy; Cruise being forever interested in "why?" makes sense, considering his acting pedigree-slash-his interest in weird religions based off of '50s sci-fi novels.
2.) He had saved up money to travel Europe after high school, but used it to move to New York to become an actor instead.

2.) He had saved up money to travel Europe after high school, but used it to move to New York to become an actor instead.

Looking over the last year of theatrical releases, W magazine has selected the hottest actors in the game. And there are plenty of deserving gentlemen that made the cut.
Obviously no list would be complete without Matthew McConaughey, whose films “Killer Joe” and “Magic Mike” were both impressive.
He told W, “In Hud, Paul Newman is a real bastard, but how can you not like this despicable guy? I love seeing someone in a movie who can walk that line: no wrong, no right, no regret, no guilt. I know some people like that, and although I don’t trust them, I respect them. They have the courage and the personal politics to walk through life and say, ‘I am an island. Deal with that.’ There’s a clarity that is attractive.”
“On the Road” hunk Garrett Hedlund also snagged an honorable mention. “I had been signed on to On the Road since 2007 or so.
