United Artists announced in 1969 that a film version of this show would be directed by Gower Champion (he directed the stage show) and starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke who both starred in Mary Poppins (1964). Champion was dissatisfied with the original ending from the Broadway show and wrote a screenplay that changed the ending to have the couple adopt twelve Korean children and remain in their home. The film was canceled in the spring of 1970 due to the then recent financial failure of musicals at the box office.
The original Broadway production of "I Do! I Do!" opened at the 46th Street Theater on December 5, 1966 with Mary Martin and Robert Preston, ran for 560 performances and was nominated for the 1967 Tony Awards for the Best Musical and Score.
In June of 1988, actors C.J. Byrnes and Cathy D'Arcy parents of actress Darcy Rose Byrnes were married on stage during a live production of "I Do! I Do!" on Broadway...in Astoria, Queens, NY. Their union was reported in local newspapers and carried on WABC's "Eyewitness News."
