Csaba Káel, head of Hungary’s National Film Institute (Nfi), hopes to emulate an 18th century Magyar hussar hero at this year’s Berlinale European Film Market. Swashbuckling Count Andras Hadik occupied Berlin for one day in 1757 — in return for 300,000 silver thalers, left without destroying the city.
Hadik’s adventure is the subject of one of the films the Nfi will be marketing at the EFM. Káel plans to spend more than a day in Berlin, but also hopes Hungarian producers will leave with handsome sales ledgers after the market — without having to raise a ransom, like the handsome hussar.
It is the first EFM for the Nfi, since it was established in 2020, just as the pandemic hit, closing down the Berlinale’s market until this year.
Káel — an award-winning director who has worked with famous cinematographers, including the late Vilmos Zsigmond — was appointed Hungarian government film commissioner following the death in 2019 of Andy Vajna,...

Liv.e admits she’s a tad nervous about what comes next. “I might need to get a drink in me before we go ahead and get started,” she says, laughing as she scans the cocktail menu at a hotel bar on Wilshire Avenue in Los Angeles. When the first edition of what would become the Sarajevo Film Festival was held in 1995, the Bosnian capital was in the final year of a devastating, four-year siege. Electricity shortages plunged the city into darkness, while food and hard currency were scarce. The inaugural screenings were held in the basement of a bombed-out building – a literal hole-in-the-wall – where tickets could be purchased with cigarettes instead of cash.
The annual event that emerged from the rubble didn’t just contribute to the cultural life of the city. In the early days after the siege, organizers and local clean-up crews got to work around Sarajevo, refurbishing historic buildings that had been destroyed by the shelling and converting them into festival venues. “Everyone who was involved felt that they were contributing to this rebuilding,” says festival director Jovan Marjanović. “The city was almost fully destroyed. And the festival was the place, and this time in the summer,...

One is likely to have many thoughts flit through their head while watching Marvel’s latest epic origin story Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. “Wow, Tony Leung really is handsome.” “I didn’t realize [Redacted] was going to be in this!” But chief among those thoughts is sure to be: “Am I crazy, or does this soundtrack slap?”
Well dear, reader, you are not crazy. The soundtrack for Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings does, in fact, slap. Marvel apparently agrees as it was sure to release the 18-track album the moment the film premiered in theaters on September 3. The soundtrack is available now. You can check out the full tracklist via Spotify below.
Marvel is fairly conservative about which soundtracks of its films it chooses to hype up. While just about every Marvel film receives one, it’s really only James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy...

From now until the end of the season, “MasterChef” will be treating fans with back-to-back episodes on Wednesdays. This week, the Top 8 chef-testants competed in front of a pair of Michelin star-winning Legends: Dominique Crenn in the first hour and Niki Nakayama in the second hour. First the players teamed up and created identical dishes while being separated visually by an enormous wall. Then they were tasked with creating three Japanese plates — one grilled, one fried, one steamed. At the end of the night, two chefs were eliminated by host Gordon Ramsay and judges Joe Bastianich and Aaron Sanchez. The eight remaining home cooks were: Abe Konick, Alejandro Valdivia, Anne Hicks, Autumn Moretti, Joseph Manglicmot, Kelsey Murphy, Michael Newman and Suu Khin.

The anime industry has grown tremendously over the last two decades and it is now valued at $19 billion dollars. Over 87% of studios are based in Tokyo, Japan, with the rest spread in countries like the US, the UK, or China. Because there is such a high interest in this industry, Hollywood has attempted to make a few live-action adaptations of animes; most of which have failed. The style, emotions, and variety of characters transmitted through drawings are very difficult to reproduce in real life. There are, however, some good films out there worth watching at least once.

For the first time in 2020, there has been a change at the top of our weekly, US-only Tubefilter charts. The California-based animation studio that has been tops in America for months has ceded its position to a Floridian vlog aimed at YouTube's youngest viewers.
Chart Toppers
Vlad and Niki, a Russian-American channel that appeals to toddlers by offering up the domestic adventures of two cute boys, is the new top dog in our US-only chart of the most viewed YouTube channels of the week. It earned the #1 position after seeing its seven-day viewership total rise by 46% compared to the last time we posted these charts. Its final tally for the week was 933.5 million views, which gave it a cushion of approximately 150 million views over the next most-watched channel of the week, Cocomelon - Nursery Rhymes. That kid-friendly hub, which had previously led this chart for months, is now #2 after receiving 785.7 million weekly views.

“It’s hard to think clearly and then say what you mean,” Beach Bunny’s Lili Trifilio sings on the band’s fantastic debut. It’s a line that’s striking in its innocent, unguarded honesty, just as the music is thrilling in its tuneful exuberance. Beach Bunny are four adorable Chicago emo kids in their early twenties who’ve been releasing music for the past few years, mostly teen-themed garage-pop tunes with titles like “Sports” and “Boys” and “Six Weeks,” the latter about the oceanic span of time elapsed since a breakup.

The total solar eclipse in August came with a well-publicized warning: Whatever you do, don’t stare at the sun without protective glasses.
What got less publicity, according to Dr. Avnish Deobhakta, was how to choose the right protective glasses — and that knowledge gap has fueled a case study the assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai published in Jama Ophthalmology on Thursday.
In the case study, Deobhakta and his colleagues describe the plight of a 20-something woman who viewed the eclipse through what turned out to be defective glasses. Four hours after staring...

Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World” has revealed its first look at Christopher Plummer in the role of J. Paul Getty. The role was originally played and completed by Kevin Spacey, but director Ridley Scott decided to remove the actor from the movie after numerous allegations of sexual harassment and assault. Plummer stepped in after previously auditioning for the part years ago.

What studios are willing to bid to win the newest Tarantino movie is staggering: an upfront agreement to a $100 million production budget, first-dollar returns, and final cut. At a time when even $35 million for an original action film like “Baby Driver” is considered a gamble, this is unprecedented.
The reason is self evident: What Tarantino can do is otherwise missing from American filmmaking. He only directs his own scripts and has never made a sequel, but his films are global events. Tarantino remains one of the only directors whose original films can rake in two-to-one foreign-to-domestic box office returns.

Still, the studios’ dog-and-pony shows are odd. So many people associated with Harvey Weinstein were victims of his abuse, tainted by their association with the apparent serial rapist, or left in the wreckage at 99 Hudson Street.

Talk about your denial stage of grieving! Six weeks after Blue Bloods blindsided viewers with the reveal that Linda Reagan died, off-season and off-screen, in a medevac helicopter crash, theories are still swirling as to how Danny’s wife could be “revived” — on, mind you, a broadcast TV show that is about as rooted in realism as you can get.
To be fair, a few TVLine readers have been able to take the tragic twist in stride, appreciating the surprise element that TV is so rarely able to deliver anymore. “Revealing it the way they did,” over the course of the Season 8 premiere,...

Ridley Scott’s decision to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in “All the Money in the World” won’t be cheap. Variety reports that the unprecedented move, which came in reaction to numerous accusations of sexual misconduct being made against the Oscar-winning actor, “will likely be north of $10 million to the film’s budget.”

That’s quite the sum, especially considering the film’s production budget was already reported at $40 million. The reshoots are expected to take between eight and 10 days and involve Michelle Williams (who’s currently shooting “Venom”) and Mark Wahlberg (who’s promoting “Daddy’s Home 2”).

Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K. exist in different corners of the entertainment world, but their misdeeds are the great equalizers. After reports of their sexual harassment and misconduct made national headlines, the companies that release their work are scrambling to avoid financial disaster.
With “All the Money in the World,” Sony’s saving grace is director Ridley Scott decided to reshoot Spacey’s scenes as J. Paul Getty with Christopher Plummer in the role, speeding toward a release date that’s less than a month away. Meanwhile, C.K.’s black-and-white cringe comedy “I Love You, Daddy” lies in the hands of U.S. distributor The Orchard — notably, also a Sony property — which canceled the movie’s premiere shortly before the New York Times story about C.K. ran, then went into crisis mode: First, the company issued a statement that it would reevaluate release plans for the movie one...

For Sony and director Ridley Scott, to do nothing would have been likely the riskiest and most costly option. Kevin Spacey portrayed oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty in the just-completed film “All the Money In the World,” but before its scheduled AFI closing-night premiere November 16, Spacey faced mounting allegations ranging from sexual harassment to rape.
Spacey went from heavily lauded actor to toxic waste dump In the space of a fortnight, transforming a much-needed potential bright spot in the Sony calendar into a $40 million albatross. No amount of clever PR and marketing could make up the difference with Spacey in that role; if there’s one thing the last 35 days have taught us, taking the wait-it-out approach to sexual-assault charges is futile.

Six weeks into the Fall TV season, we’ve got a pretty clear snapshot of what shows are flush and which are busts. TheWrap has ranked the 16 highest- and 15 lowest-rated (chill, there were ties) television series based on their Nielsen ratings to-date. To be fair at both ends of this study, we did not include any shows with fewer than four episodes to calculate. That hurt “Young Sheldon” and saved “Swat” — so you’re even here, CBS. By the way, we looked at just entertainment series only, so no sports or news programming. That eliminated all NFL games and shows like.

The Internet is not ready for The Last Jedi‘s fuzzy baby porglets.
Six weeks out from D-day, Star Wars News Net has today spotted a new line of Japanese merchandise featuring all of the sequel’s key players: Luke Skywalker, Rey, Leia, Kylo Ren, Bb-8 and a slew of heavily-armed Stormtroopers. But amid all of those famous Star Wars characters is a never-before-seen image of three baby porgs, whose faces sit upturned toward their nearby parent.
Nestled together in their makeshift home, these flightless little avians are part of the Ahch-To food chain, and subsequent reports have revealed the biological link between porgs and the caretakers, an ancient alien species that also resides on Luke’s far-flung (and temporary!) home.
Meanwhile, it seems these figurines will be exclusive to Japan, as the accompanying website doesn’t mention anything about pricing and/or a release date. That’s a little disappointing,...

Six weeks out from release, Star Wars fans are currently beside themselves with excitement for The Last Jedi, as it’ll herald the latest chapter in Lucasfilm’s storied Skywalker saga.
And bouncing off The Force Awakens and its own meteoric success – only Avatar and Titanic have grossed more at the global box office – Rian Johnson’s long-anticipated sequel welcomes the return of Rey, Finn and the great Luke Skywalker. But on the other side of the lens, The Last Jedi also makes room for many of the same personnel that worked on J.J. Abrams’ franchise revival – Neal Scanlan included.
The Oscar-winning special effects wizard currently presides over Lucasfilm’s famous Creature Workshop – think Skywalker Ranch, only for the franchise’s delightful aliens – and in anticipation of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Scanlan sat down with Empire (no, not that one) to discuss all of the fantastical critters set to appear in the December sequel.

All 10s! Lindsey Stirling and Mark Ballas landed their first perfect score on Monday night’s Dancing With the Starswith their sci-fi-themed Argentine tango.
“I am so thrilled that dance felt so good!” Stirling, 31, told Et’s Keltie Knight after the show. “When I hit the ground at the end I was just like, ‘Ooo, we nailed it we nailed it!’ And it was so great.”
But pro Ballas, 31, is determined not to let this success keep them from having their eyes on the prize.
“I think we top this by not trying to top it,” he explained. “I think we just have to move onto the next week and just bring something new and different. It’s Halloween Week, so the show loves to go full out. We're going to have a completely different style, so just kind of letting each week be its own thing.”

“You’re the Worst” Season 4 began with a problem.
“There’s a sort of a writers room buzzword [called] ‘schmuck bait,'” series creator Stephen Falk told IndieWire. “It’s bait for schmucks. It’s like, ‘Oh, the hero’s son is in peril!’ But, well, they’re not actually in peril because, you know, they’re a major character. They’ll come back.”
The bait to start Season 4 — and thus the problem facing it — is that Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash) are broken up. Most real-life couples couldn’t come back from such a tragic split, but given that “You’re the Worst” is a romantic-comedy focusing on Jimmy and Gretchen’s relationship, the expectation persists: They’ll get back together, right?

Six weeks ago, Evan Glodell was in a funk. He’d made his filmmaking debut six years ago with micro-budget breakout “Bellflower,” in which he’d starred, written, directed, and produced through Coatwolf, his filmmaking collective. That film exploded at Sundance 2011, but now it seemed like all of his projects were stalled, again.
He wondered if he should have turned down an offer to wrangle VFX for Benh Zeitlin’s “Wendy,” another follow-up to a Sundance hit (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”) made by a filmmaking collective; unlike his Coatwolf projects, that one was successfully winding its way to completion.
Then suddenly, everything turned around. Coatwolf’s second film, “Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins” produced, co-written, and starring Glodell, is close to locked and is ready for CAA to screen for buyers.

Then suddenly, everything turned around. Coatwolf’s second film, “Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins” produced, co-written, and starring Glodell, is close to locked and is ready for CAA to screen for buyers.

“Distribution is changing, therefore festivals will continue to change, too.”
Amidst the controversy over the Cannes Film Festival’s new rules change to exclude films without a commitment for French theatrical release, Netflix held its first press conference for its first Korean feature production Okja, which is set for a world premiere in Cannes Competition this week.
At the event director Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer) and Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarados addressed the film’s controversial inclusion in the festival.
Sarandos said: “I’m extremely proud of our association with Okja and Cannes. The Cannes Film Festival has a great history of only inviting what they believe are the greatest films in the world. And I believe it’s in that spirit that they invited Okja.”
“Historically, there have been many films without distribution that got into the festival. Distribution is something that people will hash around for many years to come. I mostly...

Six weeks on from its theatrical launch and Beauty and the Beast has climbed all the way to $1.05 billion – not bad for a tale as old as time – and though Disney has ruled out the possibility of a direct sequel, a prequel or some form of spinoff movie isn’t necessarily off the table.
One member of the cast that is absolutely on board with a continuation is Emma Watson, who brought Belle to life with style and grace back in March. The former Harry Potter star is currently doing the press rounds for The Circle, James Ponsoldt’s timely tech thriller in which she plays a new recruit swept under the titular, nefarious corporation, but it wasn’t long before the conversation veered toward Beauty and the Beast and, more specifically, what lies ahead for one of Disney’s most iconic characters.
