Many cities around the world pride themselves on their diversity, which is often reflected in their urban landscape. London and New York with their unique version of Chinatown or the latter with Little Italy are just some examples and arguably among the most famous, but there are numerous others, streets or even whole districts in towns or cities occupied by a culture. What was once a natural consequence of mass immigration is now a mirror of such concepts as the “melting pot” approach to immigration and integration. However, while some of them remain, others have been removed and demolished due to restructuring programs or the current phenomenon of gentrification. Once the city of San Francisco had such a thriving scene, consisting mainly of people from the Philippines, but as their last refuge fell prey to bulldozers and wrecking balls, there is only the memory on people's minds.

Take a refreshing plunge into classic French Poetic Realism — pre-noir drama with softer edges and a touch of romantic fatalism. A low-rent hotel on a barge canal is the gathering point for a cross-section of quasi- undesirables. Scandals and crimes aside, they’re a touching, human bunch, as performed to perfection by Louis Jouvet, Annabella, Arletty, Jane Marken, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Paulette Dubost and Bernard Blier. Marcel Carné’s show is also a beautiful production, with Alexandre Trauner designs that recreate ‘reality’ on an enormous scale.

“Midsommar” producer Patrik Andersson from B-Reel Films and Jakob Abrahamsson, a distribution veteran from NonStop Entertainment, have joined forces to launch Mylla Films, a Scandinavian genre film and TV production company.
Aiming to nurture local talent and stories, folklore and myths for an international audience, the banner is bowing at Cannes with a strong slate comprising of “Devastation,” Sweden’s first gothic Western, and “Hoin,” a conspiracy thriller based on a hit Swedish podcast and penned by Jerker Virdborg (Netflix’s “Black Crab”).
“Devastation” revolves around two brothers who keep a town under a tyrannical stronghold during the never-ending winter and plague of 1867. An uprising begins from the most unexpected place.
“Hoin,” meanwhile, is a thriller based on Andreas Ericson’s popular podcast of the same name. Virdborg penned the movie, which Andersson described as “‘Chinatown’ meets ‘The Ring.'” The story follows a journalist who travels to the barren archipelago of Stockholm,...

Well over a decade and a half into Ghost Adventures, you’d think Zak Bagans and crew would be running out of terrifying places to keep us up at night with, but they’ve served up one of their best specials just a couple of days into the new year with Ghost Adventures: Cecil Hotel. The two-hour special, one of the exclusive launch day offerings from Discovery+, sees the team putting themselves in the literal hellmouth of the infamous Los Angeles Cecil Hotel.
With almost 100 years of devilish history to the Cecil’s name, it’s no wonder there’s an entire season of American Horror Story based on it. Sarah Paulson’s AHS: Hotel character Bille Dean Howard has a line where she says that the show’s Cecil-inspired Hotel Cortez “is like being in a rock concert of the dead.” Based on how this special unfolds, it...

Sarah Paulson is already a Golden Globe winner for “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and now she’s on track to receive another nomination, this time for Netflix’s “Ratched.” She’s one of the top five contenders for Best TV Drama Actress, according to Gold Derby’s predictions, along with Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) and Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”). But Paulson possesses a secret weapon the other leading ladies don’t have: Ryan Murphy.

Veteran TV actress Abby Dalton, who co-starred on the ’80s primetime soap Falcon Crest, has died at the age of 88, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Dalton passed away on Nov. 23 in Los Angeles following a long illness, her family said in a statement.

Actor Abby Dalton, best known for her role as Julia Cumson in “Falcon Crest,” died last week at the age of 88.
The Emmy-nominated star got her start acting in “Rock All Night,” a 1957 film about a group of hostages taken captive by two criminals at a club. She starred as Julie, a singer trapped at the club who was one of the main characters.
Dalton went on to work with Roger Corman, who directed and produced “Rock All Night,” on a handful of other projects including “Teenage Doll” and “Stakeout on Dope Street.” Her launch into the public eye came about quickly, and by 1959 she was cast in Jackie Cooper’s “Hennesey” television series. FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story” has received its fair share of Emmys love over the years, including 16 total wins. However, one person that’s cruelly never heard his name called on nominations morning is Evan Peters. The 33-year-old actor has been with “AHS” since day (only missing out on last year’s “1984” installment) and is set to return next year in the still-unnamed Season 10. Simply put, we think the Emmy Awards are dead wrong for snubbing Peters all these years, particularly when it comes to the following four characters. These career-best performances really wowed us and should have raked in the awards for Peters … if only voters weren’t so scared. Agree or disagree with our picks? Be sure to sound off down in the comments section.

There’s an uncharacteristically fraught and hurt vibe between All Rise‘s beloved besties, Judge Lola Carmichael and Deputy District Attorney Mark Callan, in TVLine’s exclusive video from the Season 2 premiere.
When the CBS legal drama returns on Monday, Nov. 16 (at 9/8c), it will very much incorporate real-world issues like the coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. In the season opener, Lola is detained by the police while trying to defend a teenage girl during a protest, a scene which her best friend Mark witnesses. “Eloise,” the beloved children’s book about a mischievous young girl who lives on the “tippy-top floor” of New York City’s famed Plaza Hotel, is being adapted into a live-action movie.
Linda Woolverton is writing the movie for MRC Films, the independent studio behind “Knives Out” and “Mortal Engines.” MRC recently acquired film, television and stage rights for the series of leisurely reads written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight. Neither a director nor key cast members have been announced yet.
“I couldn’t be more excited and honored to adapt Kay Thompson’s delightful book and character for the screen with MRC Film,” Woolverton said. “I absolutely love Eloise for her mischievousness, her irreverence, her imagination and made-up words. Her playground, the Plaza Hotel, is an iconic symbol of all that’s wonderful about New York City.”

For the first time since its debut in 2011, “American Horror Story” was not a part of FX’s fall TV schedule. We know, we know — that’s even scarier than seeing Twisty the Clown at your birthday party. “AHS” Season 10 was supposed to begin filming in Spring 2020, but then the coronavirus pandemic began flaring up in the United States so production was understandably delayed. Thus, the premiere date will now be sometime in 2021, FX has confirmed. While we’re still waiting on official word on the season’s spooky theme, the cast list has been unveiled.

Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House” was an unexpected Halloween treat in 2018. Horror master Mike Flanagan expanded on Shirley Jackson’s novel in surprising and terrifying ways. Despite delighting fans of the genre and TV critics, “Hill House” was overlooked at the Golden Globes. Now Flanagan is back with his follow up, “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” and is aiming for some awards season revenge.
“The Haunting of Hill House” earned critical acclaim (it sits at an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and industry praise. It secured nominations from the Writers Guild and Art Directors Guild, plus our readers nominated it for Best Limited Series and Lead Actress in a Limited Series (Carla Gugino) at the Gold Derby Awards. The omission at the Globes was unusual given the HFPA’s love of new hows and their fondness for another spooky anthology series: “American Horror Story.” That Ryan Murphy franchise nabbed...

Before the Doors recorded the first take of “Roadhouse Blues,” the boogieing lead-off to their fifth album, Morrison Hotel, frontman Jim Morrison set the scene for the band by describing a vivid scene with his natural gusto.

Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween lineup might seem like a whole bunch of Hocus Pocus, but there’s actually quite a bit of variety this year.
In fact, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy is scheduled to air just 14 times in 2020. That might sound like a lot… until you discover that the basic cabler aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019.

The Criterion Channel’s stellar offerings are continuing next month with a selection of new releases, retrospective, series, and more. Leading the pack is, of course, a horror lineup perfectly timed for Halloween, featuring ’70s classics and underseen gems, including Abel Ferrara’s The Driller Killer (pictured above), Tobe Hopper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early films by David Cronenberg, Wes Craven, and Brian De Palma, Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess, and more.
Also of note is a New Korean Cinema retrospective, featuring a new introduction by critic Grady Hendrix and a conversation between directors Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan-wook, whose Barking Dogs Never Bite, The Host, Mother, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance are part of the lineup, as well as Lee Myung-se’s Nowhere to Hide, and more titles to be announced. Bong’s short Influenza will also arrive, paired with Michael Haneke’s Caché.

Before becoming a filmmaker, Leaving Las Vegas director Mike Figgis was a musician and performer in the experimental group called The People Show. Before that, he played trumpet and guitar in the experimental jazz ensemble The People Band, whose first record was produced by Rolling Stone drummer Charlie Watts. He is also the founding patron of an online community of independent filmmakers called Shooting People. You can say Figgis is a People person, which makes him the perfect director to capture Ronnie Wood in the documentary Somebody Up There Likes Me.

Duane L. Tatro, who composed for nearly two dozen TV series, including such long-running hits as “Dynasty,” “The Love Boat” and “Barnaby Jones,” died Sunday at his home in Bell Canyon, Calif. He was 93.
Tatro’s music accompanied the action on “The FBI,” “Mannix,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Cade’s County,” “Cannon,” “Most Wanted,” “Vega$” and “Matt Houston,” as well as the comedy of “M*A*S*H” and the romantic melodrama of “Glitter,” “The Colbys” and “Hotel.” His first series was the sci-fi thriller “The Invaders” in 1967, and he worked steadily in TV for the next two decades.
He got to compose the series theme for just one show: Quinn Martin’s period detective drama “The Manhunter,” which lasted a single season in 1974-75.
Tatro was born in Van Nuys on May 18, 1927. The son of an inventor, he played saxophone with Stan Kenton’s big band while he was just 16 years old.

FX‘s vampire mockumentary series “What We Do in the Shadows” ended its second season on June 10. It’s the story of immortal blood-suckers adapting to life in modern-day Staten Island, and it’ll be nominated for Best Comedy Series at the Emmys, according to a couple of our Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s nominations.
Eastwest and Ryan F had among the very best predictions out of more than 3,000 users who bet on last year’s nominations, and they’re going out on a limb for a nomination for the vampire series, which aired at just the right time to be fresh in Emmy voters’ minds. It also earned a pair of Creative Arts nominations in 2019 for its cinematography and sound editing, though none in telecast categories. It happens all the time. You book a single room for a night and wind up sharing it with a focused, non-terminal repeating phantasm, or a Class-5 full-roaming vapor. Travel Channel’s new series Hotel Paranormal, which premieres Saturday, July 11 at 10 pm, will explore spectral evidence of uninvited guests and overstays. The series follows the “terrifying true stories of those who have come face-to-face with otherworldly hotel guests.” There may not be any symmetrical book stacking in Hotel Paranormal, but narrator Dan Aykroyd can quote chapter and verse on otherworldly tales.
Aykroyd is no stranger to the unexplained. His great-grandfather was an Edwardian spiritualist. His father wrote a book called History of Ghosts and was associated with the Lily Dale psychic community in New York. The new series doesn’t only feature ghosts but checks in on a succubus, pirates, witches and serial killers.

The first words we hear Kevin Bacon say in “You Should Have Left” are “goddamn nightmares,” a phrase his character spits out after waking from some feverish visions that include long dark hallways, spooky music and a sinister, bedraggled guy threatening a little girl.
There are lots more of those nightmares to come over the next 90 minutes in this psychological thriller – oh, let’s scratch that and call it a horror movie – from writer-director David Koepp, best known as the screenwriter of “Jurassic Park,” “Mission: Impossible,” “War of the Worlds” and “Spider-Man.” Working from a novella by German writer Daniel Kehlmann, Koepp has joined forces with Blumhouse Productions to make a film that’s much closer in scale to his previous directing jobs like “Stir of Echoes” and “The Trigger Effect” than to his blockbuster screenplays, and not nearly as gripping as Blumhouse’s last spin on horror, “The Invisible Man.

Danny! Danny-boy! Jack Nicholson practically growling his son's name as he succumbs to the evil forces harbored by the Overlook Hotel and sets out to slaughter his family is one of the more terrifying scenes in a movie that's basically a master class in terrifying imagery, start to finish. Which is why, 40 years after its theatrical release, The Shining remains one of the all-time horror movies, the monster in this case being an entire building—and, of course, the demons within that just need a little nudge and a stiff drink to rear their ugly heads. Subsequently, Stanley Kubrick's polarizing adaptation of Stephen King's haunting,...

Netflix has been the saving grace of millions during the quarantine that has forced everyone inside in the midst of our ongoing global pandemic. This is the reality we now face. Ever since Super Bowl commercials have become as big a draw as the game itself, there have always been copious nods to pop culture. Yet, 2020 is proving to continue a stronger, more recent tradition of not just nodding to the thing but recreating it beat-for-beat. The latest proof? A truly discomfiting Mountain Dew ad that finds venerated actor Bryan Cranston aping Jack Nicholson’s iconic rampage through the Overlook Hotel at the end of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.”
It all plays out pretty much how you’d imagine that setup to unfold, right down to Cranston sticking his head through a crack in a door and delivering the product name with a deranged level of faux enthusiasm. Credit Mountain Dew for actually casting someone to play Wendy and not just lazily leaning on Shelley Duvall like so many other parodies have done over the years.

While it’s hard to pick a favourite from Stephen King’s prodigious back catalogue, both It and The Shining would likely land pretty high up on everyone’s lists, right?
Indeed, from the small town good-vs-evil struggle between the Losers Club and the demonic Pennywise The Clown to the claustrophobic supernatural terror of the Overlook Hotel, it’s fair to say that both novels – which were obviously adapted into popular movies, too – are some of the cream of the blood-soaked crop from King’s dark and disturbing mind.
As is the case with much of King’s literature though, a really fun and interesting layer to his writing is how the distinct universes he creates often interconnect and interrelate with one another in clever ways.

Ryan Murphy fans don’t have to worry about saying goodbye to “American Horror Story” any time soon, as FX has just renewed the anthology series for three more seasons before the show even debuts its 10th later this year, the cable channel announced during the Television Critics Association press tour Thursday.
Created by Murphy and Brad Falchuk and produced by 20th Century Fox Television, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning “AHS” franchise has been picked up for Seasons 11, 12 and 13, chairman of FX Networks and FX Productions John Landgraf, told reporters.
“Ryan and Brad are the undisputed masters of horror TV, having created the anthological limited series with American Horror Story and sustaining its success for nearly a decade as FX’s highest-rated series,” Landgraf said. “We are grateful to them and Dana Walden and our studio partners for committing to another three years. ‘Ahs’ has showcased a wealth of award...

The Golden Globes is my favorite award show. Why? Because it’s one of the few shows where celebrities get to drink, eat and sit at tables. It’s more casual, more loose and as such, provides some fantastic entertainment.
And while many people watch to see who wins, what folks are wearing or whatever it is Joaquin Phoenix was doing, my favorite part is whenever the camera cuts to the talent in their natural habitat.
For instance, while walking to the stage to accept his award for Succession, Brian Cox passed by Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, who was sitting there wearing a black tank top, something only he can pull off. He was seen wearing a velvet suit jacket earlier, but he gave it to wife Lisa Bonet at some point during the ceremony and sported just the tank for a good chunk of the night.
And the internet certainly didn’t mind it.
