Cyndi Lauper was a special guest at Nicki Minaj’s homecoming show in Brooklyn last night.
The two New Yorkers performed Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 track “Pink Friday Girls,” which samples Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Minaj is a sworn superfan of Lauper, and after the rendition of “Pink Friday Girls,” Minaj was emotional. She bowed down to the singer while on center stage and told the audience, “I have been speaking about this woman in my interviews since I first began rapping.” She continued, saying “I never in a million years thought I’d be back rapping in New York with Cyndi Lauper.”

She then told the audience that she remembers “crying” to Lauper’s “True Colors,” which Lauper then sang a snippet of with Minaj. They hugged, and Minaj told the crowd with reverence, “God bless her. Don’t wait...

Hollywood stunt people are a breed apart. They look at a skyscraper, and wonder what floor from which they could plummet onto an airbag. They encounter a ravine, and instantly want to hop astride a motorcycle and jump it. They see a fellow stunt performer get blasted with fire extinguishers after being set ablaze, and think to themselves, "I could've stayed on fire longer than that." They're wild folk, and they can make the kind of movie magic you'll savor for a lifetime.
For movie lovers, stunt people like Dar Robinson, Vic Armstrong, and Evelyn Finley are as legendary as the stars they doubled. Among casual moviegoers, however, they aren't nearly as appreciated as they should be. So when films like Richard Rush's "The Stunt Man," Hal Needham's "Hooper," or David Leitch's forthcoming "The Fall Guy" (based on the classic 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors) crash into theaters,...

Cyndi Lauper recalled hearing the Lady Gaga album that changed everything. She also saw some parallels between herself and the “Poker Face” singer. In addition, Lauper was asked what she thought about inspiring Gaga and some of her contemporaries.
Cyndi Lauper said Lady Gaga brought an entire genre back into the fold
During a 2022 interview with Pitchfork, Lauper cited Gaga’s debut album, The Fame, as one of her inspirations. “I really liked the energy of this album,” she explained. “It was young. It was dance. It was different.”
The Fame includes many of Gaga’s biggest hits, including “Just Dance,” “Poker Face, “Paparazzi,” and “LoveGame.” Through The Fame, Gaga established herself as the new Madonna, a pop music giant with a knack for great hooks, scandalous outfits, and over-the-top music videos. Perhaps the greatest legacy of The Fame is that it made dance-pop the preeminent for of popular music for the next few years.

A lot of the best music comes from dark places. Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors album includes a tribute to a friend who died tragically. Sadly, the song did not perform well. Then, Lauper managed to accomplish what she wanted to do with a different song.
Cyndi Lauper wrote a song for ‘True Colors’ inspired by Burt Bacharach
During a 2019 Interview article, Lauper discussed the origin of her song “Boy Blue.” “At that time, there was a popular song called ‘That’s What Friends Are For,’ and one of my closest friends, Gregory, was dying of AIDS,” she said. “He said to me, “Cyn, you gotta write a song like ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ for me.” I’m thinking, ‘Oh, great. Burt Bacharach, one of the greatest American songwriters, wrote that.'” Lauper felt the pressure to match Bacharach’s talent.

Sequels can be big business, but they can also be tricky. While they build off already-existing reputations, they can also set up grand expectations, comparisons between then and now are inevitable, and the patina of nostalgia can sometimes make the “then” seem superior to the “now” by default. Pink Friday 2, the fifth album from firebrand Mc Nicki Minaj, attempts to balance the expectations attached to naming itself after its groundbreaking 2010 predecessor with Minaj’s spirit of constant reinvention and confrontational persona.

“As an Iranian-American actor, we don’t get a lot of scripts centering on the Iranian-American experience,” explains Niousha Noor about what immediately appealed to her about the screenplay of “The Persian Version.” The performer says the film – written and directed by Maryam Keshavarz — shines “a good light on Iranians, just as we know our families, our mothers, and all the sacrifices they made… I just loved the fact that it was a family drama, or dramedy, and didn’t have to do with the the typical things we’re used to when we hear ‘Iran’.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Noor plays Shireen in the film, the mother of the protagonist Leila (Layla Mohammadi), whose life story of challenges and triumphs plays out as Leila learns about a “scandal” from her mother’s past. The actress spoke with Keshavarz’s “inspiring” mother, on whom Shireen is based, and...

Growing up with a foot in two cultures can be a tricky experience, so why not turn it into a comedy? The Persian Version is writer/director Maryam Keshavars’ semi-autobiographical comedy/family drama with a heart, that sets out to do just that. The Persian Version is more irreverently, laugh-out-loud funny than you might expect, but it also contains a moving story about the director’s mother, which almost could have made an epic drama on its own.
The main character in The Persian Version, Leila (Layla Mohammadi), describes herself as too American for Iran and too Iranian for America. American-born but growing up in a very Iranian immigrant family of all boys, with her as the sole daughter, Leila was the disrupter of expectations from the start. Leila...

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is one of Cyndi Lauper’s signature songs, but the iconic singer admits when she first recorded the track written by Robert Hazard, she thought: “It was like yawn and boring.”
“It wasn’t right for me. I sang his version. I sucked,” Lauper tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It was written by a guy and he was writing, ‘Hey, we’re lucky. They want to have fun. Here I am.’ And it wasn’t that way for me because I’m a woman. I’m not a man. And that would be a problem.”
But the budding singer did what she does best — takes matters in her own hands and got creative — flipping the song so it fit for her persona. And it became an international hit — one that is still recognizable 40 years after its release.

The title "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" has been attached to several pieces of media over the decades. The best-known version is the Cyndi Lauper song, which came close to topping the pop charts when it came out in 1983. Lauper's tune, however, was a feminist remake of a 1979 song by Robert Hazard.
Lauper's single was so popular in the 1980s that it spawned dozens of other professional artists to record or sing their own versions. And in 1985, it also inspired New World Pictures to put out a romantic comedy of the same name that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt. The film did a modest $6.3 million at the box office relative to its cost. It arguably could have done better if Lauper allowed her song to be used in the film — she refused, however, and Hazard's original version was used instead. Despite that, the feature has left enough...

The six singers who won their match-ups were Noivas, Ali, Gina Miles, Ray Uriel, Kylee Dayne and Cait Martin, and two more — Tasha Jessen and Kala Banham — were stolen by rival coaches. That meant four contestants were eliminated from the reality TV competition: Marcos Covos of Team Kelly Clarkson, Kate Cosentino of Team Niall Horan, NariYella of Team Chance the Rapper, and Walker Wilson of Team Blake Shelton.

Panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger were all stumped by the reality TV star.
“I was like, if I’m gonna do it I’m goin’ out with a bang!” Christine told host Nick Cannon during her unmasked interview. “I’ve always loved the show and girls just want to have fun! Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon have starred as Carrie Bradshaw and Miranda Hobbes in Sex & the City and its sequels since the ’90s. The two actors have something else in common, too. They both began their careers when they were very young and appeared in a movie together as young teens.
Parker first appeared on Broadway in The Innocents when she was 11 years old. Two years later she played the starring role in Annie. She went on to star in the early ’80s sitcom Square Pegs before her roles in major films such as Footloose and Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
Nixon was also a preteen actor with her first role being in an ABC Afterschool Special. Her film debut was in 1980’s Little Darlings, and in that same year, she first appeared on Broadway.

Cyndi Lauper is comparing Republicans’ anti-lgbtq legislation to persecution by Nazis under Adolf Hitler in 1930-40s Germany.
“I believe you don’t stop the fight,” the “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer and longtime LGBTQ activist said in a recent interview when asked to weigh in on a wave of proposed bills making their way across the country, including legislation that would restrict access to gender-affirming health care for transgender young people.

Double the episodes on Week 5 means double the themes — under one new theme — and a double elimination. Got all that? “Dancing with the Stars” will have a two-night event for Stars’ Stories Week: Monday, Oct. 17 will be Most Memorable Year Night and Tuesday, Oct. 18 is Prom Night.
The top 12 will perform on Monday, during which one couple will be eliminated, and the remaining 11 will hit the hardwood on Tuesday, during which a second couple will be axed. So it’s not a double elimination in one episode, but two couples will be gone by the end of Tuesday. This also means one couple won’t get to perform their Prom Night routine.
Tuesday will also include the dance marathon, featuring two styles, the hustle (to “Hot Stuff” by Donna Summer) and the Lindy Hop (to “Jump Jive an’ Wail” by The Brian Setzer Orchestra). Bonus points will be awarded to...

Sony Music Entertainment is officially in production for a Cyndi Lauper documentary titled “Let The Canary Sing,” a feature-length film that promises to explore the singer’s 30-plus year career.
The film, which is being made in partnership with Lauper herself, will be directed by award-winning documentarian Alison Ellwood, who most recently directed the Emmy-nominated two-part documentary, “Laurel Canyon.” Ellwood has also previously collaborated with Fine Point Films on “The Go-Go’s,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to win Best Music Film at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Credit where due: There’s something admirable about “The Cleaning Lady’s” attempt to use the tools of genre to illuminate the plight of undocumented immigrants. Fox’s new drama series, based on Argentina’s “La Chica Que Limpia,” centers on Thony (Élodie Yung), a Cambodian doctor who, having emigrated to the U.S., finds herself ensnared in the world of organized crime. Soon enough, she’s balancing trying to find medical care for her son — the reason she came to the States in the first place — with life as a cleaner picking up the aftermath of mob activity.
The situations Thony goes on to find herself in are outsized to the point of ludicrous, and the writing and direction doesn’t always help matters. In one sequence, a raid on undocumented domestic workers is set to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.” Elsewhere, the hunky law-enforcement...

The Drama League is devoting substantial resources to overhaul its marquee program, the Directors Project, in an effort to better support creatives at all stages of their careers.
Led by artistic director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks and executive director Bevin Ross, the League is investing millions over the next decade through new and expanded programs. The revamped initiative is the result of a company-wide evaluation that was undertaken during the pandemic, a period in which many who work in the arts lost work.
The broadened Directors Project will offer fellowships for early-stage directors, programs to help mid-career theater directors transition into film and television, and assistantships for young Bipoc creatives to shadow established Bipoc directors. The different programs vary in length and run up to two years.
Through conversations with more than 100 artists, artistic leaders, producers and community members, the newly designed program has been refocused to provide financial stability, well-being and guaranteed employment opportunities.

The time has come! It's been 84 years, but the game-within-a-game was revealed to the remaining queens on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 6 Episode 10.
After weeks of speculation, the lip-sync smackdown confirmed the theories burning through the internet. Of course, the queens would need to lip-sync to come back to the competition. Lip-syncing is the essence of Drag Race.
Nine queens entered, but only one would return. This is a Lip Sync For Your Life bloodbath!
The rudemption lip-sync smackdown had a great format to it.
Doing a sudden-death elimination order based on the most recent eliminated queen provided a fair and even set-up. Each queen had to work their way up and put in the effort to make it past the next round.
This tower model is better for this rudemption than the bracket-style in the Lip-Sync For The Crown. It wouldn't be fair to a queen like Pandora Boxx or Eureka!
