The story goes thus: it was 1985, and Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan, having enjoyed nearly two decades of cinematic success in his native country, wanted to extend his reach into the United States. Chan had already tried to infiltrate America in 1980 with Robert Clouse's film "The Big Brawl," but while it was highly respected by martial arts fans, "Brawl" wasn't the massive hit Chan wanted. Chan had already directed four movies by 1985 but still felt that an American director could translate his fightin' sensibilities for a North American audience more accurately. So, he hired genre filmmaker James Glickenhaus to helm the 1985 actioner "The Protector."
Chan and Glickenhaus butted heads throughout production, as Glickenhaus refused to film fight sequences in a way Chan approved of. At the end of production, Chan merely re-edited the film himself and directed new scenes in the hope of salvaging the project.

The Young and The Restless spoilers and updates tease Jordan (Colleen Zenk) might get lucky if the preview video for the week of May 20 means what it appears to. It shows Cole Howard (J. Eddie Peck) following Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) and finding his secret dungeon.
The Young And The Restless Spoilers – Cole Howard’s Been Suspicious Of Victor’s Story
Naturally, Cole appears ready to step through that doorway and explore the depths of the cellar.
Given Cole’s doubts about Victor and his hidden secrets, it’s logical to assume that he will capitalize on this chance to gather more information.
This could potentially unveil a startling revelation if Cole comes across Jordan trapped in the jail cell that Victor has constructed.
Meeting her in person and interacting with her may provide Cole with concrete evidence that Jordan is indeed alive.
But the big question is, will Cole...

Prior to his gig on "Star Trek" in 1966, actor DeForest Kelley spent 20 years traversing the wild and hoary world of episodic television and appearing in supporting roles in little-regarded feature films. His first professional screen acting job was a one-off performance in the one-season 1947 TV series "Public Prosecutor." The series holds the distinction of being the first-ever mainstream televised series to be released on film, instead of being broadcast live, which was standard at the time.
Between that show and "Star Trek," Kelley appeared on over 80 TV shows, often just in single episodes, but sometimes returning for two or three. He also had bit roles in films like "Variety Girl," "The Men," "Taxi," and "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral," playing Morgan Earp. He was just a hardworking character actor, taking the jobs that were offered him. There is an integrity to that approach.

Some of the best music videos are the ones which understand the power of a simple and contained idea. As Director Austin Hutchings mentions below, Radiohead’s Karma Police or Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Maps, for example, are simplistic in plot but iconic through the power of their imagery. The same can be said for Hutching’s video for Kat Duma’s So Long, which sees the singer pose as a runaway bride whose past catches up on her. It’s a video driven by distinctive imagery, one that is quite happy holding a shot to give the audience time to immerse in its world. Dn is excited to present the premiere for So Long alongside a chat with Hutchings where he speaks to the importance of both shooting in practical environments and giving yourself time on set to play and be creative.

For many around the world, there’s one name at the top of the action totem pole: Jackie Chan, and today marks his 70th birthday.
If you only know him as a goofy martial arts comedian from the Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon series, then consider this a wake up call. Because when Jackie did things His way on his home turf, he churned out some of the best action movies you’ll ever see.
Many would point to Drunken Master II as Jackie’s magnum opus. Fair enough, that is an all-timer, but for an example of his best modern day martial arts action, mixed in with some crime drama and his signature comedy, one of his absolute best outings is 1985’s Police Story.

As we wind down this year’s Oscar season, we at Gold Derby are already looking forward to next year’s. Clearly, we can’t get enough. But next year’s Academy Awards season could also concern this year’s as the Oscars afterglow effect could be in full force. Actors can often garner a quick follow-up nomination after breaking through in the nominations list the year prior. Eddie Redmayne accomplished this when he followed up his 2015 Best Actor win for “The Theory of Everything” with a 2016 Best Actor bid for “The Danish Girl.” Similarly, Octavia Spencer was nominated for Best Supporting Actress two years in a row — in 2017 for “Hidden Figures” and in 2018 for “The Shape of Water.” So, which of these year’s acting nominees could return next year? Let’s take a look.
Best Actor
Bradley Cooper has an exciting project that should be out in time for next year’s Oscars.

Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk is recalling the time he was hired as David Spade’s stunt double in 1987’s Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol, but it didn’t go as planned, all thanks to puberty.

Though he didn’t land a lead role, he said the film’s team decided to hire him as a stand in for Spade during scenes with complex skate tricks and since they are both goofy-footed. American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing is a three-part Netflix documentary series directed by Floyd Russ.
A look back at the 2013 event, which ended the lives of three people and resulted in numerous injured. A true-crime of the American Manhunt series (Police Pursuit).
About the Series
Interviews with the protagonists and, above all, a great deal of police investigation in this docuseries, which also features previously unpublished images of the attack.
A shocked city and, above all, the ghost of the Twin Towers hovering over served to turn this terrible event into a phenomenon, which we now contemplate from a much more rigorous perspective in terms of its analysis. It is also a very human film and, most important for fans, it doesn’t betray the line of the series.

While Donnie Yen is about to turn 60 and is showing no signs of slowing down — in career or fight speed, Jackie Chan is nearing 70 and doesn’t look interested in throwing in the towel as well. The action legend had once said his last all-out action movie was to be 2012’s Chinese Zodiac, the third film in the Armour of God series. However, he has since made a smattering of movies with some of his signature style. Chan recently announced he would be doing a new Rush Hour with Chris Tucker. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Chan is officially launching the sequel to the 2004 reboot of his famous Police Story series, New Police Story.
Jackie appeared at the Filmart market alongside his New Police Story co-star Nicolas Tse as the Chinese movie studio Emperor Motion Pictures announced their slate for 2023. The duo made an appearance to help launch the sequel to their 2004 film.

Mubi's series I Don't Like You Either: A Pialat Retrospective is showing from September 4 - November 3, 2017 in the United Kingdom and many countries around the world.Maurice Pialat was one of the toughest, most bullish, tenderhearted, pugnacious filmmakers to ever work in Europe. He made 10 feature films, many shorts, and one television series in 35 years. Each is uncommonly spare, love-filled, banal, and brutal, as difficult to experience as their maker reportedly was to contend with on set. Together they form an oeuvre that exemplifies rigor and gracelessness and a total lack of fussiness about good taste, wherever it might land on the high-low spectrum. His movies are routine and explosive; they lurch between emotional polarities in the space of a minute; they are stuffed with odd-ends and anti-climaxes. His actors flip wildly between dramatic registers and the characters they play are thrown together out of flagrantly contradictory material. His work is riven with ellipses,...

Any list of the greatest foreign directors currently working today has to include Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. As always, a number of deserving film festival entries are stragglers in need of distribution or funneled away by buyers to be released in the following year. One of the downsides of attending a number of film fests is seeing great cinema sometimes plopped unceremoniously into a limited theatrical (or even VOD) release over a year later without any traction. And if a film happened to receive a cold shoulder at a prestigious venue like Cannes the chances of convincing audiences otherwise is a difficult feat.
Happily, all but two titles from this list currently have Us distribution (and with a little luck, someone will eventually get around to snapping those up, too). A thankful shout out to the following distributors is in order, with Strand Releasing responsible for three of the titles, while Kino Lorber, Sundance Selects, Drafthouse, A24, and Alchemy make up the others. Gérard Depardieu plays powerful fallen character, with Jacqueline Bisset as wife, in film Welcome to New York
The first images from a feature film inspired by the Dominique Strauss-Kahn scandal and directed by the American Abel Ferrara, have been released, two years after the former head of the Imf was arrested in New York over the alleged attempted rape of a hotel worker.
The trailer for Welcome to New York is a frenzied and explicit rampage through the champagne, orgies and debauchery behind a French power figure at the highest levels of Washington before his arrest over attempted rape.
The Strauss-Kahn figure is played by Gérard Depardieu in what appears to be such a scathing performance it could help rehabilitate the actor's own image in France, where he caused a storm this year by taking Russian nationality in a row over tax.
"It is a [Strauss-Kahn] only Depardieu could play," said...

A Nine-Minute Interval
Director: Corneliu Porumboiu
Writer: Corneliu Porumboiu
Producers: Romanian 42km Film’s Marcela Ursu and Les Films du Worso’s Sylvie Pialat
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Bogdan Dumitrache (The Death of Mr. Lazarescu) and newbie Diana Avrămuţ
With his Cannes’ Camera d’or winning debut film, 12:08 East of Bucharest (’06), he deftly captured Romania’s revolution, with his second, the Un Certain Regard in 2009 Jury Prize and Fipresci Prize winning Police, Adjective (’09) Porumboiu’s antithesis of a police thriller where bureaucracy trumps democracy. His third feature falls under the perfect cinematic snack food: the sub-genre of films about filmmaking. Should be just as witty.
Gist: Paul (Bogdan Dumitrache), a young filmmaker apparently working with the digital format.
Release Date: In post-production since December-ish, expect this to be launched at the festival where has been supported by and has made his name. Cannes – Un Certain Regard section...

Cinema, like most arts, exists beyond time and space. They are a medium of transportation, and for most of us, our only opportunity to fulfil our deepest desires and confront our darkest fears. That’s why it seems unfair to look back on a year in film and focus only on new releases. Our year end obsession with best of lists extends far beyond our desire to compartmentalize cinema into qualitative categories, but reflects an innate desire to understand and communicate with the world. We look at the list of our favourite critics to better understand who they are, and make our own lists in the hopes of finding hidden meaning in our own lives. We use these lists as emblems of who we are and what we are thinking. These desires may not lie quite on the surface, but there is no denying they fuel – at least in part – our compulsion for list making.

Critics who flock to Cannes every year and the cinephiles who can’t get enough of the Romania’s contributions to art-house cinema will be pleased to learn that (according to Filmneweurope) 12:08 East of Bucharest and Police, Adjective helmer Corneliu Porumboiu is currently in post production on his Bucharest-shot third feature entitled, A Nine-Minute Interval. Safe to say that we can pencil in this film about filmmaking as a 2013 Cannes contender as this also happens to be a French/Romanian co-production.

Woody Harrelson became famous 30 years ago when, still in his early 20s, he joined the cast of the TV comedy series Cheers as the goofy, grinning bartender Woody Boyd from Hanover, Indiana. He seemed to be a simple, friendly small-town boy, somewhat out of his depth in the big city. During the 1990s his public and private personae rapidly changed. He became known as a reckless hard drinker and an outspoken political activist, whose father was a contract killer serving a life sentence for murdering a federal judge. On screen he played increasingly complex and darker roles, some of them bizarre variations on the Woody character (basketball hustler in White Men Can't Jump; psychotic criminal in Natural Born Killers), others reaching out in quite different directions (the pornographer with a civil rights mission in The People vs Larry Flynt; the gay Washington gigolo in The Walker). Ingratiation with popular audiences...

Chicago – Did you miss the DVD Round-Up? Well, it’s back with as diverse a selection as we’ve seen in some time. The purpose of the DVD Round-Up is to catch the titles that might otherwise fall through the cracks. With everything going on this crazy summer, we may not have time to devote full-length reviews to these five possible gems but we wanted to make sure you knew they were out there, waiting for your hard-earned dollar.
Just a reminder, the DVD Round-Up is designed for information purposes, not for review. Having said that, “36th Precinct” is well-worth a look and “Medium” was always an underrated show. Finally, “Midnight Movie” has some hardcore fans. Check it out and see if you’re one.
“36th Precinct,” “Midnight Movie: The Killer Cut,” and “Norm Macdonald: Me Doing Standup” were released on June 14th, 2011.

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, it appears as though the Tiff Cinematheque is set to pull out all the stops.
According to Criterion, the Tiff, formerly known as the Cinematheque Ontario, will be bringing out a rather superb and cartoonishly awesome summer schedule, that will include films ranging from Kurosawa pieces, to films from Pier Paolo Pasolini. Other films include a month long series dedicated to James Mason, Eric Rohmer’s Six Moral Tales, a tribute to Robin Wood, and most interesting, a retrospective on the works of one Catherine Breillat.
Personally, while the Kurosawa, Pasolini, and Rohmer collections sound amazing, the Breillat series is ultimately the collective that I am most interested in. Ranging from films like the brilliant Fat Girl, to the superb and underrated Anatomy of Hell, these are some of the most interesting and under seen pieces of cinema of recent memory, and are more than...

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). It tells the harrowing story of three black children growing up in rural Mississippi in circumstances of violence and addiction. The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

New York -- The New York Film Festival on Tuesday announced its slate, and it skews a lot more foreign than domestic.
The festival is heavy on such European filmmakers as Michael Haneke ("The White Ribbon"), Alain Resnais (who will open the fest with his "Wild Grass"), Pedro Almodovar ("Broken Embraces") and Claire Denis ("White Material"). Only two U.S. directors have scripted features in the lineup, a recent low for the prestige festival.
"Two years ago, we had the Coen brothers and Wes Anderson and Julian Schnabel and Noah Baumbach and Sidney Lumet," said Richard Pena, programming director and selection committee chair for the Film Society of Lincoln Center. "Last year, there was less, and this year there is much less."
Although that's at least partly a function of the diminishing specialty business -- which in turn has led to a dwindling amount of U.S. auteur fare --...

This weekend we get to find out exactly what happened in “Year One.” Or at least what Hollywood thinks happened. As you know, they tend to fudge the historical facts for a better story and… wait. This a comedy? Not a serious Biblical epic? My bad.
In honor of “Year One,” I’ve decided to dig up five movies that tell just what happened in the years after. If IMDb is to be trusted, “year movies” will be a trend in the next few years. There’s Roland Emmerich’s latest vision of the apocalypse, “2012,” along with “1066″ (the Norman Invasion of England), “1777″ (A pretty big year for the American colonies) and “1906″ (The San Fransisco Earthquake). Date titles aren’t just the new hotness however. Just look at these, all of which came out long before 6/17/09…
“10,000 B.C.” (2008)
If you want to get really technical about history, “10,000 B.C.” actually occurs before — long before — “Year One.
