When news broke last year of John Hillcoat adapting Blood Meridian, I had expressed some hope for similar treatment bestowed upon Cormac McCarthy’s final novels The Passenger and Stella Maris. This desire was almost entirely quixotic; his swan song is an über-nihilistic encyclopedic thriller, at least one-third of which is a two-person dialogue on the history of math, physics, the Manhattan Project (far more compellingly than Oppenheimer), God’s existence, and wanting to fuck your own brother, with a protagonist rather convincingly written as the smartest person alive. It is really not suggestive of a financeable movie.

It’s funny that both of Jerry Seinfeld’s movies have been pegged to such high-concept premises, as the sitcom legend famously built his brand with a show about nothing. In fact, that might be the funniest thing about them. First came 2007’s deeply strange “Bee Movie,” in which Seinfeld — who produced, starred in, and co-wrote the project — voiced a honeybee who starts getting hot for a human florist. Now comes Seinfeld’s directorial debut, a sketchy and surreal business parody that re-imagines the rush to invent the Pop-Tart as if the rivalry between Post and Kellogg’s were as crucial to the future of western civilization as the Space Race or the Manhattan Project.

Oppenheimer Box Office Success
This larger-than-life on-screen moment is indicative of the explosive impact that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer would have on the worldwide box office. Launched to the forefront of pop culture through the meme-able Barbenheimer movement, this film defied the odds of what audiences expect from a biographical drama to become the awards darling and box office sensation of 2023.
So, how did it do it? How did a partially black-and-white biopic centered on the creator of the atomic bomb, unfolding in a non-linear fashion defy the odds to win over not only critics… but general audiences? Well, hunker down and prepare for the blast wave as we dive into how Oppenheimer Exploded the box office.

Robert Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr.’s supporting turn as a vengeful bureaucrat.

It was a good night for the UK at the 96th Oscars. Brits won in seven separate categories at the Dolby Theatre, with Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Glazer’s wins the highest profile.
Nolan scooped Best Director and Best Picture, the latter alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, for the night’s standout winner, Oppenheimer. Universal’s film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his Manhattan Project took home seven statuettes, having been widely tipped for glory after a stellar awards season and handed Nolan his first Best Director win.
After thanking his wife and production partner, Emma Thomas, and others such as brother and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan, Nolan added a sprinkle of hope to the sauce in a message to the Academy.
“Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old — I mean imagine being there 100 years into painting or theatre. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here,...

Cillian Murphy won the Best Actor Oscar this evening for his riveting turn in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. After five collaborations with Nolan, this was Murphy’s first time in a lead role in one of the director’s films — nabbing him his first-ever Oscar nomination, and the first win in the Best Actor category for an Irish-born actor. In a shout-out to his homeland from the Dolby stage, Murphy said, “I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.”
He also thanked Nolan and producer Emma Thomas: “It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on for the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say.”
To all the cast and crew, he added, “You guys carried me through.”

He’s the director most associated with 21st century cinematic spectacle and, finally, he has an Oscar. Christopher Nolan has won the Best Director Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards for “Oppenheimer.”
This is only the second time Nolan’s ever been nominated for Best Director. His first came for 2017’s “Dunkirk.” He has received a total of eight Oscar nominations in his entire career, however, including those two Best Director nods: also, for Best Original Screenplay for 2000’s “Memento,” Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for 2010’s “Inception,” Best Picture for “Dunkirk,” and Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for “Oppenheimer.” With the film also winning Best Picture that means he actually now has two Oscars.
“Oppenheimer” itself won seven Oscars: in addition to Best Director and Best Picture, it won Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer
Among the list, Barbenheimer is back in attention with many arguing over which project would sweep major wins at this event. Christopher Nolan’s Rumored Salary for Oppenheimer Will Give Steven Spielberg an Inferiority Complex
On the heels of Christopher Nolan potentially being paid a jaw-dropping salary for his critically acclaimed film Oppenheimer, it appears that even rivals Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg. While the exact figures have not been confirmed, rumor has it that the British-American filmmaker might have been paid an estimated $72 million for the $960 million 2023 film.
For comparison, Spielberg, one of the highest-paid directors in the movie business, is said to charge between $20 and $25 million (or sometimes more) per film. So when you do the math, it’s not hard to see how Nolan’s potential pay might give Spielberg stiff competition.

Spielberg is credited with creating many successful films, including Jaws (1975), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Jurassic Park (1993), and others.

Ahead of the 2024 Oscars, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (Nti) launched its “Make Nukes History” campaign in Los Angeles, using the nominated film Oppenheimer to expand the conversation on nuclear threats.
As explained on the Nti’s official site, the campaign involves billboards, an art installation, street posters and an open letter signed by various stars, calling for the use of nuclear weapons to be ceased.
In a statement shared with the announcement of the campaign, Matthew Modine, who was part of Oppenheimer‘s cast, writes, “Every person should be educated about the incredible destructive power of nuclear weapons. Understanding the threat illuminates a necessary path toward their elimination.”
Modine adds, “Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been directly harmed by radioactive fallout from the hundreds of nuclear explosions conducted on U.S. soil. From the moment of the first atomic bomb test at Los Alamos, New Mexico, our entire planet has been at risk.

The Japanese film Godzilla Minus One seemed to be a surprise hit among fans and was lauded for its VFX and action sequences. The film received an Academy Award-nominated for Best Visual Effects, making it the first Godzilla film to be nominated for the prestigious award. Godzilla Minus One also earned $107 million at the box office against a $12 million budget.
The Godzilla franchise has long been regarded as a metaphor for the threat of nuclear warfare and Japan’s morbid history with the weapon. Another film criticizing nuclear warfare was Christopher Nolan’s epic war film Oppenheimer, which surprisingly did not show the Japanese perspective of the war. Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki mentioned that someday he would like to counter Oppenheimer’s narrative with a film of his own.

Oppenheimer costume designer Ellen Mirojnick took audiences back to the 1940s with her two- and three-piece suits worn by Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer and the other scientists on the Manhattan Project. But the fashion in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic also stayed impressively timeless, which Mirojnick reveals was one of the director’s early requests.
“One of Chris’ first notes was, although we’re traveling through many different periods, can we find a way to make it accessible to a modern audience?” Mirojnick tells THR, adding that she studied the varied silhouettes of different time periods in her research.
Coupled with Murphy’s undisclosed weight loss for the role, Oppenheimer’s look is fashioned after David Bowie’s Thin White Duke era, that “’70s American life,” says Mirojnick. “His exaggerated silhouette at that time was Cillian’s first entrée into Oppenheimer. In some ways, Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s biggest non-superhero movie, was a product of the pandemic. Until the winter of 2020, the director had been loyal to Warner Bros., and their logo was to be found on every film that Nolan either wrote, directed or produced.
While he was never formally tethered to that studio, Nolan had been monogamous as its cornerstone tentpole filmmaker, ever since his 1999 breakout indie film Memento led him to create Insomnia there.
That year, however, everything changed. The usually mild-mannered director was outraged by the decision of former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar to perpetrate a blindside dumping of the studio’s entire slate onto its HBO Max streaming service. This attempt to build subscribers for its streaming service at a time few were going to theaters incensed Nolan and many others. Oppenheimer is more than just 2024’s apparent Best Picture favorite and one-half of the “Barbenheimer” movement that shattered modern box office expectations. It’s a sweeping examination of the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer and how his work on the atomic bomb reshaped the course of human history.
Of course, even the most thorough examinations of significant real-life figures and events can’t quite cover everything you need to know about the true stories they try to tell. More importantly, many of those movies often intentionally alter or exclude certain details for the sake of storytelling. Understanding how complicated the filmmaking process can be is the key to understanding how such decisions are ultimately made.

There is no doubt that Cillian Murphy is the talk of the town at the moment. He is one of those actors in Hollywood who is famous enough for his incredible work, but at the same time, can even escape one’s notice. In simpler words, he is the human manifestation of letting his work make all the noise while he stands on the sidelines with the rest of his admirers, instead of being in the spotlight.
Cillian Murphy is a rare specimen of an exceptionally talented and wise actor, the kind of wisdom that comes from observing. For someone who is this famous, he is surprisingly down-to-earth and genuine. So, anything that comes out of his mouth is generally taken seriously. For now, he has something to say about his fellow Oscar-nominated Irish actor.

For someone who is this famous, he is surprisingly down-to-earth and genuine. So, anything that comes out of his mouth is generally taken seriously. For now, he has something to say about his fellow Oscar-nominated Irish actor.

Emily Blunt is a first-time Oscar nominee this year for her role in Oppenheimer, but it turns out she didn’t find out about her nomination in the most Hollywood way.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz for a conversation at 92Ny on Tuesday, Blunt explained that being referred to as an Academy Award nominee doesn’t yet feel natural, despite the months-long buzz she would receive Oscar recognition.
“It’s all quite scary, the anticipation of it, and I think you just try not to listen to buzz because buzz can be built on sand sometimes. And so when it did happen, and when it happened in such a far-reaching way for all of us in the movie and every crew member, it was magical,” Blunt said of Oppenheimer‘s many nominations, and when learning of her own, “I did have a brief cry in the middle of Brooklyn, brief weep...

Given the strong slate of this year’s Oscar nominees, the pre-Academy Awards season has been devoid of the intrigues and mud-slinging of previous epochs. Oops! – could a new outbreak of Barbie-phobia break the harmony and bring naysayers out of the shadows?
I already hear a few negative murmurs: Not only is Barbie suddenly “a bad movie,” but Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent in Killers of the Flower Moon, as his director originally planned. And Oppenheimer was a brilliant movie but arguably could have focused on a different physicist.
While most of us are disposed to admire the Oscar Best Picture nominees, and may even vote accordingly, this is the moment when we always hear from grumpy film nerds. They led the wave of indignation in 1982 when Et was critiqued for lacking the cultural depth of Gandhi. Et made us smile, not yawn, it was later pointed out,...

Christopher Nolan appreciates all film projects, big or small, but he admits that he will likely continue to work on “large-scale” productions.
During an interview with Time magazine, published online Monday, the filmmaker said some of his recent favorite films were smaller-scale dramas, including Past Lives, which he said was “subtle in a beautiful sort of way,” and Aftersun, which he called “just a beautiful film.”
And though Nolan admires the beauty of those projects, he noted that he feels a “responsibility” to continue making blockbuster movies with large casts, elaborate sets and big budgets.
“I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,” the Interstellar director told the outlet. “I know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a towering achievement. Ambitious, thoughtful, and often frightening, it’s one part biopic, one part cautionary tale, and one part lament for a world in which humanity’s most brilliant moments of creation are also inevitable acts of destruction. Grounded in a sensational central performance from star Cillian Murphy and an unflinchingly vivid directorial vision, it snagged 13 Oscar nominations and deserved every one. It’s not perfect, by any means, but it’s a sprawling, cerebral reminder of what blockbuster filmmaking looks like on almost every level. It’s probably going to win Best Picture, and it’s hard to argue that any other movie that came out last year can—or likely should—beat it.
It’s precisely because Oppenheimer is such a genuinely great film that its most glaring flaw feels all the more frustrating. If Nolan and...

Conservatives often criticize awards shows peppered with overtly political statements, but one GOP senator has written a letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors asking them to do include just those sort of messages in this year’s telecast.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-mo) wants the Academy to include the story of those who have suffered as a result of America’s nuclear testing in its celebration of the most-nominated film during this year’s Oscar ceremony.
“Public interest in J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life story has never been greater, and the ongoing significance of his legacy will undoubtedly be a major focus at the 96th Academy Awards,” wrote Hawley in reference to Oppenheimer, which garnered 13 nominations.
“As you continue preparations for the ceremony on March 10, I write to urge you to include programming that recognizes the victims of America’s nuclear testing.”

Maga firebrand Josh Hawley is no stranger to political malfeasance — he’s the election-denying Missouri senator who famously raised a fist in support of the insurrectionists assembling on the morning of Jan. 6, then was caught on camera a few hours later desperately sprinting from those same rioters as they descended on the Capitol.
But now, shockingly, Hawley is apparently stooping even lower with a dirty tricks campaign aimed at an even more sacred American institution; he appears to be meddling in the Oscar race.
Hawley released a Jan. 25 open letter to the Academy demanding that Hollywood help people exposed to radiation during the Manhattan Project by “telling their stories” — a dig, perhaps, at Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, currently the front runner for Best Picture. “The Oppenheimer film tells a compelling story of these test programs,” his letter goes on. “But it does not tell the story of the Americans left...

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are reteaming once again, this time for a new crime thriller that just landed at Netflix.
Affleck will direct Animals, which will star Damon. It could be shooting in Los Angeles by March, if all the pieces come together.
The secretive project was operating under several titles — The Animals of Los Angeles and Be Gentlemen — before landing on simply Animals.
Written by Connor McIntyre with revisions by Billy Ray, the crime thriller concerns a mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped. Surrounded by plenty of enemies, political and otherwise, the husband and wife have no choice but to get their hands dirty in order to save their son.
Affleck and Damon will produce via their Artists Equity, along with the company’s Dani Bernfeld. Also producing are Brad Weston and Collin Creighton via their MakeReady banner. Fifth Season, the production, sales and distribution...

Update: Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer now has an official release date in Japan, with Universal’s local distribution partner Bitters End setting March 29 for the film to open in cinemas there.

Production designer Ruth De Jong and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick have worked on projects helmed by incredible filmmakers. De Jong earned an Emmy nomination for David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return and worked as the production designer on Jordan Peele’s Us and Nope. Mirojnick, meanwhile, earned an Emmy for Behind the Candelabra — one of her six collaborations with Steven Soderbergh — and designed costumes for Steven Spielberg (Always), Richard Attenborough (Chaplin), Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days), Oliver Stone (Wall Street) and Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Starship Troopers).
So the pair know a thing or two about what makes a great director. But it’s Oppenheimer writer-director Christopher Nolan whom De Jong and Mirojnick call the ultimate filmmaker.
“There is no other director like him, and I’ve worked with some of the best,” says Mirojnick. “His method of collaboration is very generous, and he shares a massive amount by comparison to anyone else.

The comedian and host of “Late Night With Seth Meyers” told Variety he thought Jo Koy did a “great job” hosting the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards, considering the “deck was stacked against him.”
While speaking with Marc Malkin for Variety On the Carpet, presented by Directv, Meyers was asked what the comedian thought about Koy’s performance as host, to which he responded, “When you do a show like these, it helps to have a staff of people you know and you trust well.” Meyers continued, “So, all things considered, I thought he did a great job considering how the deck was stacked against him.”
Meyers complimented Koy, saying he’s “had this incredible career” and “done it all on his own.”
“That’s a real credit to Jo,” Meyers added.

Jo Koy is once again weighing in on his divisive stint hosting the 2024 Golden Globes, which received mostly negative reviews from critics and viewers. After previously telling “GMA 3” that he “fell a little short” as host and had an “off night,” the stand-up comedian now joined the Los Angeles Times to weigh in on the biggest controversies generated by his hosting job. Per The Times: Koy was hired 10 days before the awards ceremony, his writing staff wasn’t picked until “eight days before the show,” they all met in person “two days before” and “the monologue was done the day before.”
“We were still writing up until they said we’re live,” Koy said. “Absolute cold reads, never got a chance to work out anything. And this is not an excuse, I’m just trying to paint the picture because I don’t think people understand, in any situation,...

Greta Gerwig doesn’t seem too upset over the polarizing “Barbie” joke Jo Koy made during his gig hosting the 2024 Golden Globes. Koy received mostly negative reviews for his hosting stint, and the “Barbie” joke led to backlash on social media as many viewers thought Koy was being reductive and sexist toward the film.
During his opening monologue, Koy tipped his hat to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon by jokingly comparing Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Gerwig’s “Barbie.”
“‘Oppenheimer’ is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and ‘Barbie’ is about a plastic doll with big boobies,” he joked as the audience responded with a muted laugh.
Given that Gerwig’s “Barbie” actively fights against gender stereotypes, many Golden Globes viewers found Koy’s joke to be tasteless and not needed. However, Gerwig appeared on BBC Radio 4 Today and had a different, more glass-half-full take when asked about the joke.

Greta Gerwig has taken the high road in response to Jo Koy’s ill-received Barbie joke at the Golden Globes.
During the comedian’s widely panned and openly booed monologue, Koy joked about the Barbieheimer box office battle, noting that while Oppenheimer was “based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project,” Barbie was about “a plastic doll with big boobies.”
He continued, “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet. Or what casting directors call ‘character actor.

Greta Gerwig may be coming off a record-breaking year with box office smash Barbie but the screenwriter and director has revealed she is feeling intimidated by her next project, the adaptation for Netflix of C.S. Lewis children’s classic The Chronicles Of Narnia.
“I’m slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for Narnia,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today program. “I loved Narnia so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by.”
“As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly… it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.

Jo Koy probably won’t be back as Golden Globes host in 2025, but whatever his future may hold, good luck hiring writers after Sunday’s staff was thrown under the Greyhound.
With the Golden Globes still recovering from scandal, Koy faced an uphill battle. The wounds are so fresh that some winners thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association; the HFPA was disbanded over a lack of diversity. The Globes didn’t even have a real ceremony in 2022, but returned to TV last year.
Koy’s opening monologue was weak. (IndieWire TV critic Ben Travers called it “a catastrophe;” our Proma Khosla went with “lukewarm.”) Even weaker were his multiple attempts to save face.
From the start, it was clear that Koy was out of his element. Comics who sell out theaters, like Koy, are used to performing for people who specifically paid to see them. This room was not that.

Los Angeles, Jan 8 (Ians) The Christopher Nolan directorial ‘Oppenheimer’ won its 4th award at the Golden Globes as it bagged the trophy for Best Picture – Drama.
Fellow nominees in the category included ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘Maestro’, ‘Past Lives’, ‘The Zone of Interest’ and ‘Anatomy of a Fall’.
‘Oppenheimer’ is a biographical thriller film starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist credited with being the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project — the World War II undertaking that developed the first nuclear weapons.
The film, based on the 2005 biography ‘American Prometheus’ by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, chronicles the career of Oppenheimer, with the story predominantly focusing on his studies, direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing.

Christopher Nolan has won the Golden Globe for Best Director for “Oppenheimer.”
The win marks Nolan’s first Golden Globe win on his sixth nomination. His blockbuster about atomic bomb inventor J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the most nominated films at this year’s Golden Globes, picking up eight nods including Best Screenplay for Nolan and Best Motion Picture — Drama.
While Nolan has long been one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers — balancing critical acclaim and box office success in a way that has afforded him a singular level of creative freedom — high-profile award wins have largely evaded him. He has received five Oscar nominations, including two for Best Picture and one for Best Director, but has yet to win.

Jo Koy kicked off his first-ever Golden Globes hosting gig Sunday with a monologue that referenced the size of “Saltburn” star Barry Keoghan’s penis and weight-loss drug Ozempic in front of top Hollywood talent, drawing a mixed response for his jokes.

Koy was announced as this year’s host on Dec. 21, just down to the wire at less than a month out from the Jan. 7 airdate of the awards show on CBS.

Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever by Matt Singer (G.P. Putnam’s Sons)
As an adolescent in the early 1990s, one of my Sunday night rituals was recording that week’s episode of “Siskel & Ebert”––it aired late-night in Buffalo, NY––and watching it the following day. The internet was in its infancy, so the reviews of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were both a lifeline to what was happening in film and a cinematic education. It is no exaggeration to say that I learned how to discuss movies thanks to Gene and Roger. For my generation, then, the release of...

“My biggest challenge on ‘Oppenheimer’ was understanding the scope, understanding how we had to bring different periods across,” explains costume designer Ellen Mirojnick on the undertaking of the Christopher Nolan film. As she details, the epic look at the Manhattan Project and its architect J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) “took place over 45 years with ease in the cut, so you can’t have anything that’s gonna jump out of frame” in terms of her wardrobe choices. She discusses the scale of the task in a new video that Gold Derby is debuting exclusively, which also includes interviews with cast members and behind-the-scenes footage of filming. Watch the “Oppenheimer” exclusive video featurette above.
One of the key looks of the film for Mirojnick to get right was Oppenheimer’s trademark hat and pipe. She notes how the figure’s “silhouette from the beginning through the end of his life didn’t really change.

“It’s a very complicated, difficult thing to do,” notes Luisa Abel of the challenge of working on “Oppenheimer” and specifically of “aging” the characters “over many decades.” Christopher Nolan’s epic film about the Manhattan Project and its architect J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) had “73 speaking roles” and “18 agings” that included “three to five leaps of decades.” The head of the makeup and prosthetic department collaborated closely with head of hair department Jaime Leigh McIntosh, and they both discuss their process in a new video that Gold Derby is debuting exclusively. Watch the “Oppenheimer” exclusive video featurette above.
As the film chronicles decades in the life of Oppenheimer, McIntosh had to tailor Murphy’s hair to reflect his aging. The haircut that marks his transition from Ph.D. student to his time on the Manhattan Project “ended up taking five hours,” says McIntosh, because “Chris was there the entire time.
