For over 25 years, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival called the Castro Theatre home. With the iconic theater now closed for a year-plus-long renovation, Sfsff has relocated to the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, located in a beautiful park created for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition at the north edge of the Presidio. The auditorium, primarily a performance space, seats nearly a thousand and features a spacious foyer where passholders could visit and relax between shows (particularly useful on chilly weekends).
Sfsff prides itself on mixing landmark productions and audience favorites with rediscoveries, revelations, and rarities, often recently uncovered and restored. And for its 27th edition this year, the festival presented 20 features and six short films over five days, all with live musical scores by some of the finest silent film accompanists in the world.
The opening night film, Albert Parker’s 1926 swashbuckler The Black Pirate, certainly qualifies as both landmark and favorite.

One thing that viewers can expect from any of the Dick Wolf franchises, is an episode or two dedicated to a ripped from the headlines case or current event.
This go round, Chicago Pd Season 4 Episode 12 was a nod at the Charleston shooting.
What I appreciated the most, is that for once the case wasn't "on the nose." In fact, it was so subtle that it barely registered until the end of the episode. Nothing about the case had anything to do with the real life tragedy.
The case was that of a female jogger being sexually assaulted and killed in a park. The two suspects were two young black boys wearing hoodies. You know, same old, same old.
Aside from Tillman having a few physical similarities to Dylan Roof (redhead with a bowl-cut), his being unapologetic and not showing an ounce of remorse, a fire bomb ruining a church,...

Simon salutes the sterling work of Kevin Costner in a list of the 10 best films of his career so far. “Let’s do some good”…
It’s a topic we seem to return to on an annual basis at Den Of Geek, and we’re firm believers with an ‘on with the tradition’ philosophy here. But, of all the movie stars who have risen and fallen over the past few decades, have any had quite as much of an eye for a good risk, or taking a chance, as Kevin Costner?
It’s testament to his body of work just going through some of his quality films that didn’t make the following run-down of his top ten movies. For Love Of The Game is a woefully underrated baseball movie, for instance, while there’s a lot to like in Mr Brooks, too. And you’ll notice the almost-criminal omission...

No matter how lucky someone appears to be in life, every one of us can be dealt a bad hand. How you cope with the setback is telling of your character and resolve. Meet Kenny Easterday, a man who knows this all too well. He's the man with half a body. So small in fact, he can fit inside a suitcase. Despite his size and appearance, Kenny lives his life as fully as he can. He bowls by lying down on the lanes and shoots pool by climbing onto the top of the table. Meet Kenny Easterday, Courtesy of Tlc His amazing story is on The Man with Half a Body, a documentary airing on April...

- So, you've seen the list of the films shown at the Montreal World Film Festival this year and you weren't particularly impressed with them? It's true that most of the films, except a very few, were made by directors virtually unknown in Montreal cinephiles, but who knows, maybe we'll have some pleasant surprises! In this piece I'll go over some key attractions of the 2005 selection. First, despite what people will tell you, the line-up does include works by established directors, among them Marta Meszaros with The Unburied Man (Hungary), Roots by Pavel Lounguine (Russia), Harry's Daughters by Richard Hobert (Sweden), La última luna by Miguel Littin (Chile) and many more. Amongst those other films, I'll highlight a few here. Canadian writer/director Larry Kent will present his latest film at the festival. The Hamster Cage relates the story Lucy and Paul who return to their childhood home for a
