“The Landscape and the Fury” by Switzerland’s Nicole Vögele took the Grand Jury Prize in the International Feature Film Competition at Swiss doc festival Visions du Réel on Friday.
Shot on the Bosnian-Croatian border, which is also the European Union border, the film unveils the struggle of refugees being chased away by police and navigating a terrain still contaminated with mines from the Bosnian War.
It marks a return to VdR for Vögele, who premiered her first short film “Mrs Loosli” at the fest in 2013. Her 2018 debut feature, “Closing,” won the Special Jury Prize for Filmmakers of the Present at Locarno.
Her win marks a hat-trick for Swiss documentaries after Peter Mettler picked up the top prize last year with “Where the Green Grass Grows” and Tizian Büchi won in 2022 with “L’Îlot.”

Shah Rukh Khan Co-Owns Ipl Team Kolkata Knight Riders With Juhi Chawla ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Ipl Auctions 2024, last year was as interesting as it could be, and the world saw Shah Rukh Khan & Juhi Chawla‘s team, Kolkata Knight Riders, making the biggest bid ever in the history of the Ipl season. The bidding table was led by Gautam Gambhir while they sealed the bid for the costliest player in the history of Ipl.
The bid was made on the Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc, who is a bowler and has played in the Ipl twice, in 2014 and 2015. The cricketer will be returning to the series this year after Srk’s team bought him at a hefty price.
Mitchell cost Kolkata Knight Riders a whopping 24.75 crore, and he pushed Pat Cummins, who was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 20.50 crore in the same auction, to number 2 in a few minutes. Mitchell and Pat pushed Sam Curran,...

Predicting the eventual five Oscar nominees for Best International Feature is made difficult by the three-step process that begins after the October 2, 2023 deadline for countries to submit entries. To be part of the selection process for this category, which was called Best Foreign Language Film before 2020, requires a great deal of dedication. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscars Best International Feature predictions.)
In the days following the deadline for submissions, the academy determines each film’s eligibility. Then the several hundred academy members who serve on the International Feature screening committee are divided into groups and required to watch all their submissions over a six-week period that ends in early December. Their top 15 vote-getters will make it to the next round. That list of semi-finalists will be revealed on December 21, 2023.

This season “America’s Got Talent” is taking talent to the limits with “AGT: Extreme.” Hosted by Terry Crews with Simon Cowell, WWE Divas two-time champion Nikki Bella, and motorsports champion Travis Pastrana as judges, the spinoff series focuses on stunt acts and the talented performers that attempt the most dangerous feats. After four weeks of competition, one act will become the first “Extreme Champion” and win the cash prize of $500,000.
In the initial phase of the competition, acts must earn a “yes” vote from at least two of the three judges to advance to the next round where America’s superfans will vote. The judges also have the special “Golden Buzzer” option available to them, which they traditionally reserve for the auditions that impress them the most. In the auditions premiere, Simon gave his Golden Buzzer to drone engineers Verge Aero and Nikki gave hers to wheelchair athlete Aaron Wheelz.

Early September’s Venice Festival celebrated the restart of cinema theater attendance. Opening six days after Venice ended, as second-wave Covid-19 forced parts of Madrid back into semi-lockdown, 2020’s on-site San Sebastian Festival, normally a convivial, festive event, was a more sober affair as Europe’s industry calibrated the cost of the pandemic.
More bullishly, industry leaders talked up the fundamentals of Spanish-language production, TV and film, which remain strong. Following, six takeaways from San Sebastian, which wraps with a prize gala tomorrow, Saturday night.

Manuel Nieto’s trans-Atlantic co-production “The Employer and the Employee” scooped San Sebastian’s biggest industry prize this week, the Egeda Platino Industria Award for the best Latin American work in progress. Its producers will receive $34,850 cash in kind to go towards finishing the film. Seven companies from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and France make up the ambitious co-production.
San Sebastian’s 2020 Industry section, like so many other events this year, was forced to adapt to a streaming model. However, the timing of the festival, coinciding with relaxed travel restrictions both from within and outside of Europe, allowed for part of the section to be held in person, creating a hybrid event that could prove a model for other festivals to emulate.

This week's news in the arts
If history tells us anything it is, first, that art about sport is usually a bad idea, and secondly, that artists never learn this. The Olympic Games have always been a tempting subject. Big jumps, taut thighs, twanging javelins: few artists can behold these marvels without feeling the urge to inadequately recreate them.
The Theban poet Pindar and his rival Bacchylides , who both wrote victory odes in the fifth century Bce, were surely not the first to get sucked in. As Pindar gushes in a poem for the Isthmian games: "To a poet's mind the gift is slight, to speak/ A kind word for unnumbered toils, and build/ For all to share a monument of beauty."
No doubt these words were pinned to Jilly Cooper 's study wall while she composed her steam'n'stirrups epic Riders. Cooper's novel takes equal joy in the physical accomplishments of its heroes,...
