Roger Corman, a pioneering producer, actor, and King of B Movies, passed away at 98. Few people in the entertainment industry leave a mark as lasting and essential as Mr. Corman’s. With 493 producer credits, Roger Corman championed the B movie tier, giving horror fanatics, science-fiction enthusiasts, and action addicts reasons to holler at screens while pumping their fists. With a sharp eye for talent, Corman discovered industry heavyweights like Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, and more. Mr. Corman died at his home in Santa Monica, California, on May 9, while surrounded by family.
“His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that,'” the family said in a statement.
Through New World Pictures and Concorde/New Horizons, Corman wore many hats. When he wasn’t producing, he wrote; when he wasn’t writing,...

In a 2022 interview for Variety, actor, writer, and director Christopher Guest said, “When I met (Jennifer Coolidge), I knew there was something going on that was special. And I was right, fortunately.” He praised her ability to command attention without commanding the dialogue. “This person stands out. Everyone else to me is invisible. You want to see her.”
We have seen her on our television and theater screens since the early 90s. And 2023 may have been her best year yet.
So, what happened to Jennifer Coolidge, the self-deprecating eccentric humorist and sometimes sex symbol, who owns over 100 credits in television and film? To know that, we must do what we always do: start at the beginning where the beginning began.
Jennifer Coolidge was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 28, 1961. She says she always looked old for her age, so she was able to buy a case of beer when she...

Welcome to The B-Side from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Happy Halloween! This year we discuss a legend: Roger Corman! As is tradition, our dear friend Gavin Mevius, talented editor and co-host of the incredible The Mixed Reviews Podcast. Be sure to listen to their podcast and support them on Patreon if you see fit!
Today we tackle three B-Sides: Not of This Earth, The Intruder, and Frankenstein Unbound.
We discuss Corman’s influence on New Hollywood and his enduring influence to this day, his indelible eye for talent both in front of (actors like Nicholson and De Niro got their starts in Corman films) and behind, and the directing career that could’ve been had The Intruder been a hit.

The creature has been revealed from the practical effects-driven sci-fi creature feature They Crawl Beneath, in which a young police officer trapped under a car after an earthquake has unleashed a fearsome monster.
“Young police officer Danny (Joseph Almani) is working on an antique car at his uncle’s remote ranch when a major earthquake hits, pinning him under the vehicle and leaving him bloodied, alone, and with no way to call for help. Just when he thinks the claustrophobic nightmare can’t get any worse, something truly horrifying emerges from the fissures in the ground, forcing Danny to engage in a brutal fight for his life—and his sanity.”
Directed by Dale Fabrigar, it also stars Michael Pare (The Lincoln Lawyer), Joseph Almani (Law of Attraction), Arthur Roberts (Not of This Earth), Christopher M. Dukes (Heaven’s Revenge), Karlee Eldridge (House of Bodies), Elena Sahagun (Tremors 3: Back to...

They’re after you, and your wives and children! This Corman/VeSota/Ed Nelson shocker with the excellent poster is a Robert Heinlein knockoff that can’t quite sustain the paranoid pitch of other ‘parasitic possession’ sci-fi horror epics. One of the cheapest of the drive-in cheapies, it remains a must-see title just for the audacity of its ad campaign, and a random moment or two of spooky serendipity. Don’t get your hopes up if you’re coming to see Leonard Nimoy’s performance — unless his voice is enough to satisfy.

Roger Corman began his boom year of 1957 with a marvelous bit of ‘way-out’ sci-fi — a ‘Tidal Wave of Terror’ no less. This note just arrived from Donald J.’s Seafood Emporium: “You puny, dunderheaded humans, don’t let the campy title fool you! Soon you will be ‘absorbed’ into our crabby super-mentalities, heh heh heh. We atom-age crustaceans are made of electric anti-matter — it’s incredible! Our telepathy is the best telepathy ever — everybody says so! It is what it is!” The new Blu-ray will charm fans seeking prime ‘fifties monster nirvana.

A lot of words have already been written this week, and hopefully a lot more will be written in the next few weeks, months and years, about the great and beloved character actor Dick Miller, who passed away on January 30th in Burbank, California at age 90. A quick look at his bio page on IMDb will give you the basics about his early life— born in The Bronx, he served in the Us Navy and, despite his diminutive stature, even won a prize title as a middleweight boxer. But that’s not why several generations of movie fans know him, love him, or get such a kick out of seeing him pop up, sometimes seemingly out of nowhere, in the over-180 films and TV episodes in which he appeared.

Dick Miller, a prolific screen actor best known for his role as Murray Futterman in the 1984 classic horror film “Gremlins,” has died. He was 90.
With a career spanning more than 60 years, Miller has made hundreds of on screen appearances, beginning in the 1950s with legendary director and producer Roger Corman. It was then that he starred as Walter Paisley – a character the actor would reprise throughout his career – in the cult classic “A Bucket of Blood,” before going on to land roles on projects such as “The ‘Burbs,” “Fame” and “The Terminator.”
Miller also boasts a long history of high-profile director partnerships, working with the likes of James Cameron, Ernest Dickerson, Martin Scorsese, John Sayles and, perhaps most notably, Joe Dante, who used Miller in almost every project he helmed.

When I was a kid my dad used to have tapes upon tapes of movies he had taped off TV, typically uncut and usually filled with all the “goodies” Case in point, Screwballs. Screwballs was recorded in LP format and came just after Caddyshack. While I’m not entirely sure how I was allowed to watch the uncut, non-television purified version of Caddyshack at as twelve, well I thank my lucky stars that dear old mum never figured it out. At the time I didn’t know that Roger Corman was in anyway associated with the picture. Figures. Giant, low budget monster movies and loosely based Edgar Allen Poe adaptations certainly give way to comedic representations of large ta ta’s pirouetting across the screen like sugar plum fairies on LSD. So for the boobs. For the sense of humor grown by repeated viewings of said film. For the VHS...

Excision means removal by cutting cut. With that being said maybe you’ve learned something, so this review won’t be a complete waste of time. I may even be able to save you a bit of time by telling you that Excision is definitely worth seeing. Reading the rest of this review won’t spoil its rather knotted twist, but if you were looking for a movie to watch that’ll get under your skin, make for a great conversation starter after a few cocktails and leave you with a permanent case of “what the fuck was that?” I can say you’ve found it. It isn’t a horror movie no matter how many times I see it referred to as a horror comedy. You know me. I’ve pretty got a one track brain so when I choose to review a non-horror picture it probably means there...

Chicago – Sci-fi film buffs in the Windy City are invited to attend an April marathon bursting with cinematic gems. “Sci-Fi Spectacular 6” kicks off at noon Saturday, April 28, at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave. It showcases over 14 hours of beloved features, shorts and rare trailers as they were originally intended to be experienced—on the big screen.
Two major highlights at this year’s event are key masterpieces in the career of Terry Gilliam. 1985’s “Brazil” creates an unforgettable portrait of a dystopian future both amusingly absurdist and unsettlingly provocative. Jonathan Pryce stars alongside Kim Greist, Ian Holm and Robert De Niro, while cinematographer Roger Pratt and production designer Norman Garwood provide unforgettable imagery. Equally mesmerizing is Gilliam’s 1995 thriller “12 Monkeys,” in which a grizzled convict (Bruce Willis) travels back in time to prevent a man-made virus from destroying the future. Brad Pitt’s Oscar-nominated turn as a crazed virus...

People of Earth! So long have you spun there, quietly destroying yourself with greenhouse emissions and Go Large Whoppers. For eons, we have hoped to visit you! And this summer, many of my extra-terrestrial brothers, sisters and zblopnorgs are coming to raze your cities, destroy your culture and slurp up your natural resources.
Most of us were planning to go to Rigel IV this year, but it was that last HD simulcast of The Jonas Brothers Live at Six Flags that finally sold us. (Not just the catchy pop tunes, but the crowd reaction shots of people enjoying churros. On our world, doughnuts only exist in one shape!)
Think I'm fibbing? For four of your Earth months there will be a nonstop cinematic invasion of little green men. There's no way you won't be getting anally probed by at least one of these films.

Adored by young women for his clean-cut image, this male porn star has been named as the likely lead actor in Bret Easton Ellis's forthcoming film. But can an adult entertainer ever make a successful transition to Hollywood?
Earlier this week, Bret Easton Ellis announced his intention to cast a male porn star as the lead in The Canyons, a new film noir to be directed by Paul Schrader, the screenwriter of Taxi Driver and director of American Gigolo.
Ellis had long been an admirer of James Deen, who is striking because of his unusual appeal to young women – not generally key consumers of porn. When the two men met in January, they bonded over being unlikely poster boys: "He ordered a salad and we chatted amiably about the unearned feminist hysteria we both received at certain points in our careers," Ellis tweeted.

Celebrities will invade Los Angeles this weekend for the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. Searchlights will blaze and flashbulbs will pop as Hollywood stars will descend from the heavens -- or maybe just the Malibu hills -- to touch the ground that regular Angelenos walk on each day. They'll smile and snarl our traffic. They'll toss their hair and forget to thank their husbands. They'll praise each other for their bravery, while collecting $75,000 gift bags. L.A. is accustomed to such strange invasions, of course. If you're a movie fan, you already know that L.A. has been invaded over the years by everything from giant atomic ants (Them), to buff cyborgs (The Terminator), to rampaging 3D zombies (Resident Evil: Afterlife). So Angelenos take invasions from movie stars in stride. But this weekend marks an anniversary of an invasion you might not know about: L.A.'s first alien invasion. This...

Starring: Rick Crawford, Audrey Walker, Chris Witherspoon, Anna Lodej, and M.L. Maltz
Review by J Astro
Rage was handed to me for review with no cover art or explanation, just a plain white disc with red lettering in a clear plastic cover. Within roughly the first ten minutes of watching it, it occurred to that I had actually heard of this movie before, having noticed a few reviews of it on various other individual blogs and sites in the past few weeks. Rage has been getting some solid attention recently, and deservedly so, because it is a standout among indie horror efforts. It’s by no means flawless or my new favorite movie of the year or anything, but it sure beats the hell out of most other “home grown” horror-thriller exploits. And I was happy to go into it “blind...

Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. That is the key to The Woman In Black, legendary English studio Hammer Film Productions’ first original big-screen venture in decades. The Hammer brand, so infamous and beloved from the late Fifties and into the early Seventies for producing titillating tales of the macabre that helped to redefine classic monster icons and to introduce the fright genre en masse to the likes of Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Oliver Reed and countless others has returned, after lying dormant for many years. Upon being resurrected by its new backers, Hammer has recently had a hand in unleashing Let Me In on theater-goers, which was the English language remake of the popular Swedish vampire chiller Let The Right One In. Alex Stapleton is the director of the new documentary “Corman’s World,” which opens in theaters Dec. 16.
I have always been fascinated by Roger Corman. Tony Randel (Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Fist of the North Star) and Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall, Not of This Earth, The Return of the Swamp Thing, Dinocroc vs. Supergator) will be co-directing a remake of The Giant Gila Monster, the public domain (meaning you too can remake this movie) black and white horror flick from 1959. Playboy Playmate Julie McCullough will starring alongside Terence Knox, Matt Austin, Ellen Kingston and Jenna Ruiz, reports Robert Hood. Bill Dever and Jim Nielsen are producing. The original, directed by Ray Kellogg, follows a giant lizard that terrorizes a rural Texas community with a heroic teenager attempting to destroy the creature.

Glenn Erickson’s masterful and insightful criticism over at DVD Savant is a regular stop for many of us here at Trailers From Hell, so it excites us to no end that he’s finally released another compendium of reviews in book form. This time focusing on a genre near-and-dear to our hearts: sci-fi films. Erickson’ aptly titled Sci-Fi Savant features over 100 bits of criticism spanning the history of science fiction on film.
From the publicist:
Sci-fi Savant‘s 116 separate title entries are in chronological order starting with Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and ending with James Cameron’s Avatar. Many are exclusive to this book. In addition to representing all of the key classics of the 1950s, the selection gives full coverage to more arcane but equally significant titles.
A brief list of notable rarities:

The ninja film isn’t widely loved like the samurai genre, and that’s mostly due to the lack of any significant ninja movies, especially compared to what Akira Kurosawa delivered in his career. This is a tad unfair, but let’s change that.
After directing Enter the Ninja in 1981, Menahem Golan wanted to follow this hit for his Golan-Globus Films (Cannon Films) with a sequel. In what has become widely recognized as one of the best ninja movies ever made, 1983′s Revenge of the Ninja features some of the coolest ninja action and violence, as well as sharp direction by the newcomer Sam Firstenberg, who would go on to direct some of the more popular films for Cannon Films, including American Ninja and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogalo.
Director Sam Firstenberg chats with Killer Film about his breakout hit Revenge of the Ninja in another dose of Action Packed Flashback.

While other releases in the Shout! Factory’s Roger Corman’s Cult Classics focus on his producing credits, the recent Sci-Fi Classics showcases three of his early directorial works. Oh, he also produced all three, worked with the writers on the scripts and even pitched the projects to investors. Like many directors today, when you call something a "Corman film", it’s because he’s influenced the project from the start.

Encino, CA - While Charles Nelson Reilly is beloved for his time on Match Game, there’s more to this actor than Dumb Dora answers. He was the toast of Broadway with roles in Hello Dolly and Bye, Bye, Birdie and won the Tony for How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Later in life he directed several plays on the Great White Way. While many actors sum up their lives in thick tomes, Charles created a one-man show. He was a stage performer so this was the best way to distill his experiences for an audience. The Life of Reilly captures his final performance before his passing in 2007.
After playing the festival circuit and a limited theatrical release, Life of Reilly is finally out on DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes. You can take Charles every where. In edition to the feature film, there’s tons of bonus features including...

On paper, here’s a rather standard issue heist film. That’s pretty much it, but when seen, there’s great performances – especially from Hayden Christensen (yeah, I just said that) and Idris Elba – and a really great midday heist sequence. Plus, Stephen King had it as his number 5 film of 2010! (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says:...

Buried Lionsgate is going the "single serve" route with Buried, offering it only in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack as I'm sure all studios are now hoping consumers begin adopting Blu-ray over DVD. I haven't yet rewatched this film, but I did enjoy it in the theater and wonder how it will play at home. I can only assume the best way is to turn the lights off completely and crank up the sound. However, I'm not sure if this is a film I want to return to. After all, who wants to watch a film about a guy trapped in a box multiple times? Animal Kingdom I have been meaning to rewatch this one for a while now. I wasn't as enamored with it my first time around as everyone else, but the more I thought about it...

Perhaps the most anticipated release this week is Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, a groundbreaking indie thriller starring Ryan Reynolds who wakes up to find himself buried alive, but much more is at play in this ingenious film. Perhaps the most anticipated release this week is Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, a groundbreaking indie thriller starring Ryan Reynolds who wakes up to find himself buried alive, but much more is at play in this ingenious film. The word “cult cinema” is thrown about quite liberally in film criticism, but it takes a dense history to firmly qualify a given film as “cult.” Nicholas Roeg’s sci-fi headtrip The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) is certainly a cult film, as its audience was never “found” in a traditional, straightforward way (i.e., in its original theatrical release). The spotty, complex reception history of The Man Who Fell to Earth has a great deal to do not only with what it was, but when it was. Based on the 1963 novel by Walter Tevis, the film secured financing mostly because of the bankability of its star, David Bowie, in his first starring film role, yet the final product was something of a mystery and an infuriation for initial audiences and critics: a psychedelic bad-trip ruminating on sexual frustration, identity crises, and alcoholism. It was hardly the piece of science-fiction entertainment audiences were used to, as...

Oakland — Just in time for the holiday season, the Gravy has arrived.
Saint Misbehavin’: The Wavy Gravy Movie opens up in various theaters across America at the start of December. Wavy Gravy is an icon with an ever changing career. He’s gone from the legendary Merry Pranksters to the head of security at the original Woodstock to running a respected charity and finally achieving international greatness as a flavor of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. The many facets of his life are covered in the documentary directed by Michelle Esrick.
We had a chance to sit down for an extensive interview with Wavy Gravy and Michelle Esrick when the movie premiered at 2009’s Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
This first part has him discuss getting drunk with Jack Kerouac (On the Road) and dropping acid at the Electric Acid Kool-Aid Tests. Ahhh good times.

Shout! Factory delivers another dose of Roger Corman goodness with a fun double feature. Though not as enjoyable as his releases from the 80's, this disc provides a terrific history lesson on how exploitation films changed in response to both an evolving market (B-movies were having a harder time getting a theatrical release) and the MPAA's ongoing smackdown on gore and nudity.
First up is The Terror Within, a post-apocalyptic creature feature. The film starts with two scouts from an underground Mohave Desert research facility hunting for food. As they communicate with the base, we find out that the accidental release of a bio-weapon has killed about 99 percent of the world's population. A few of the survivors, however, have mutated into monsters dubbed "gargoyles." And that's what the scouts run into. Prompting the facility leader (George Kennedy) to send out David (Andrew Stevens) and his girlfriend Sue (Starr Andreeff), along with their trusty dog Butch,...
