Like many of you, I was scratching my head when I learned that director Renny Harlin would be making not one, not two, but three movies based on the horror cult classic The Strangers. While a pretty slick horror flick, the original spawned a modest follow-up that didn’t get a ton of buzz. When it came out, I figured it was a series that had run its course. It seems this is not so, with Lionsgate releasing a widely ambitious trilogy of horror films this year (it’s like the horror version of Kevin Costner’s Horizon).
Notably, it marks the return of director Renny Harlin to the horror genre. Now mostly known for his action films, such as the classics Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and many more – horror was where he made his original reputation. Prison, which gave Viggo Mortensen his first leading role,...

Renny Harlin’s career has come full circle, from low-budget horror and action films like Born American and Prison through blockbusters such as Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger before reverting back to budget-minded films like The Bricklayer and this film, Refuge. This time around, he’s bringing the horrors of war back home as a soldier’s encounter with the unexplained threatens the lives of everyone around him.
Sergeant Rick Pedroni is serving somewhere in Afghanistan when his unit takes a group of Taliban prisoner. Questioned about a nearby cave, they say there’s no more of them in there, in fact, none of them would go in there. Rick volunteers to check it out.

The imaginative and groundbreaking prison drama "Oz" is getting a short sequel from its original creator, according to series star Kirk Acevedo. The actor who played inmate Miguel Alvarez for six seasons of the HBO series took to X/Twitter this week to spread the word about "Zo," a YouTube short film from series writer-creator Tom Fontana. According to Acevedo, the short is set to star Dean Winters, who played ultra-violent prisoner Ryan O'Reily in the show's original run, and Lee Tergesen, who played Tobias Beecher, an attorney-turned-inmate who was forced to adapt to harsh prison conditions. Christoph Shrewe, whose credits include "Mr. Robot," "Criminal Minds," and "Fear the Walking Dead," will direct the upcoming short.
Acevedo notes that "Zo" will be about "Oz after prison," and an accompanying promo image includes the phrase "What happens once you're free?" What's more, the actor noted that if the film gets "good buzz,...

Exclusive: National Geographic is wading into one of psychology’s most debated studies from the past 50 years. The network has given a green light to The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking The Truth (wt), a three-part docuseries from Juliette Eisner, Alex Braverman and Muck Media, the producers behind Nat Geo’s Emmy-nominated Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller.
Led by Stanford psychology professor Dr. Phillip Zimbardo, the six-day Stanford Prison Experiment was Zimbardo’s attempt to understand the power of situation over human behavior. In 1971, Zimbardo paid two dozen college-aged participants to live in a mock prison, observing how randomly assigned “prisoner” and “guard” roles influenced behavior. What started out as a self-contained university experiment turned into a media spectacle that captured the imagination and attention of the world, defining our understanding of human nature and forever changing the course of psychology.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is separating from her husband just three months after regaining her freedom, she confirmed on social media this week.
“People have been asking what is going on in my life. Unfortunately, my husband and I are going through a separation and I moved in with my parents home down the bayou,” Blanchard wrote, referencing a reconnection she’s had with her father, Rod Blanchard and stepmom, Kristy. “I have the support of my family and friends to help guide me through this. I am learning to listen to my heart. Right now I need time to let myself find … who I am.”
The marriage of Blanchard, 32, to Ryan Scott Anderson, a teacher from Louisiana, in a 2022 prison house wedding appeared to be a turning point in the young woman’s tumultuous life, which before her time in prison was spent under the thumb of her controlling mother,...

Bianca Censori, the controversial wife of Kanye West, has once again made headlines with her daring fashion choices. This week, while in Paris, Censori was seen out in an outfit that pushed the boundaries of public decency, potentially putting her at risk of legal consequences.
The 29-year-old architect boldly opted for a pair of sheer tights that left her groin and buttocks completely exposed. She paired this with a cropped blue top that appeared see-through and left her nipples visible. To complete the ensemble, she draped a fur coat with stenciled text on the back over her tights.
Unaware of the potential legal implications, Censori seemed oblivious to the fact that her attire might violate French decency laws, which could lead to imprisonment or a significant fine. Article 222-32 of the penal code, established in March 1994, states that deliberate sexual display in public view is punishable by up to one...

After an exhaustive yearlong search to find the show’s next host, Jon Stewart is returning to The Daily Show on a part-time basis, just in time for the 2024 election season. But he won’t be doing it alone. He’ll host Monday night’s broadcast beginning Feb. 12, with a roster of rotating correspondents from Tuesday to Thursday. For some, his return speaks to the dire state of late-night TV.
Stewart left the chair of the satirical news program in 2015, and ever since his absence, the show has taken a dive.

In an election year when civil rights are being threatened, authoritarianism is spreading around the globe and minorities are a popular political target, it’s no wonder that films exploring the U.S. criminal justice system are everywhere you look in the Sundance Film Festival lineup.
“There’s so much inequality and injustice in the justice system,” says “God Save Texas: Hometown Prison” director Richard Linklater. “There’s a lot to be outraged by and examined.” Variety spoke with him and other filmmakers such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Debra Granik and Yance Ford about their Park City projects — when taken together, they paint a devastating and sometimes hopeful picture of contemporary policing, criminal trials, incarceration and rehabilitation.

The Justice Department is seeking a sentence of six months in prison for Peter Navarro, a former White House advisor during former President Donald Trump’s term in office, after being convicted of criminal contempt of Congress for ignoring a subpoena from the January 6 congressional committee.
Prosecutors are also seeking a $200,00 fine. Navarro has previously complained that the legal costs of the case have bankrupted him.
Navarro is scheduled to be sentenced on January 25. He was found guilty in September on two counts of contempt of Congress.
In a 20-page sentencing memo, Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Aloi said prosecutors sought to punish Navarro for his bad-faith strategy.
“The defendant, like the rioters at the Capitol, put politics, not country, first, and stonewalled Congress’s investigation,” Aloi said in the sentencing memo. “The defendant chose allegiance to former President Donald Trump over the rule of law.”

Gypsy Rose Blanchard was seen in public for the first time since leaving prison in Missouri.
Blanchard was released from prison after serving eight years for killing her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.
In a photograph, she was seen walking out of a building carrying two plastic bags and holding a suitcase. Her husband, Ryan Scott Anderson, was nearby with a large suitcase in his car.
Blanchard was granted parole in September this year and was released on December 28.
Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after helping her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, murder her mother. Gypsy Rose was sentenced to ten years in prison for her role in the murder.
Blanchard herself thought she was suffering from many health ailments, but many now believe she was a victim of Munchausen by proxy, a form of child abuse that has a guardian exaggerating or inducing illness to gain sympathy.

A new iteration of Fox‘s Prison Break is in the works at Hulu from Mayans M.C. creator Elgin James. James is writing and executive producing the series, per Deadline, marking his first project since Mayans M.C. ended earlier this year. The new series is described as a new chapter set within the world of the original series. Original characters Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), are not expected to be part of it. Both characters were central to the original series, which debuted in 2005, and the 2017 followup. The original Prison Break creative team is involved in this new chapter. Original series creator/executive producer Paul Scheuring and original executive producers Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz are all working with James. The series is part of James’ overall deal with 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios, which also served as the studio for the original show.

In the 2012 making-of documentary "The Nightmare Isn't Over: The Making of Halloween II," producer Irwin Yablans admits it was he who pushed John Carpenter to make "Halloween II." Carpenter, as most horror nuts might be able to tell you, wasn't really interested in making a sequel to "Halloween," feeling that the story had reached an effective conclusion. In Murray Leeder's 2013 "Halloween" entry into the Devil's Advocates essay book series, Carpenter admitted that when he sat down to write "Halloween II," he had nothing but beer and a complete lack of ideas. Carpenter admits that he only decided that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) should be the sister of the killer, Michael Myers, out of sheer desperation.
But Yablans insisted on a sequel because "Halloween" made so much money. Horror fans may know that "Halloween" was made for a tiny budget of about $300,000, but netted over $70 million at the box office.

When it comes to the horror genre, there's no larger fear than the fear of the unknown. Perversely (in defiance of good creepy storytelling) but understandably (because what better way is there to combat fear of the unknown than by education), audiences and filmmakers are drawn to continue the story of a number of ambiguous horror films through sequels, remakes, reboots, and other franchise-expanding efforts.
The original "The Strangers" is one of the most unsettling home invasion movies ever made, thanks to the large amount of realism and ambiguity surrounding the titular masked killers. Contrary to popular belief, there is an "explanation" of sorts for their actions in Bryan Bertino's 2008 film and Johannes Roberts' 2018 sequel, "The Strangers: Prey at Night" in the repeated line "Because you were home," indicating that their murder spree is nothing more than random violence unleashed due to opportunity. Yet the identities of Dollface, Pin-Up Girl,...

A judge sentenced “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson to 30 years to life in prison Thursday for the rapes of two women two decades ago.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo handed down the sentence to the 47-year-old Masterson after hearing statements from the women about the trauma they experienced and the suffering caused by the disturbing memories in the years since.
The actor, who has been in custody since May, sat in court wearing a suit. Masterson watched the women without visible reaction as they spoke.
“When you raped me, you stole from me,” said one woman who Masterson was convicted of raping in 2003. “That’s what rape is, a theft of the spirit.”

On paper, the action and horror genres seem like they'd be strange bedfellows. After all, the general aim of action films is to provide adrenaline-fueled thrills, while horror movies are intended to disturb, scare, and unnerve.
Yet in practice, the genres blend far better and far more often than may be expected. I can still remember schoolyard chums excitedly recounting the ways in which Bruce Willis' John McClane dispatched terrorists in "Die Hard 2" (such as when he shoves an icicle into a baddie's eye), kills that would be wholly appropriate in a "Friday the 13th" or "A Nightmare on Elm Street" film. Hollywood producers certainly saw the connections; Renny Harlin, who directed "Die Hard 2," won the gig after making horror films like "Prison" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master."
In 2023, the action and horror genres have long been considered an excellent peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo, with much cross-pollination happening within them.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Over the history of this editorial series, there have been persistent comments that the Dtv entries – or at least the ones that follow The Amityville Horror remake – are unworthy of being described as part of the “franchise.” There’s a reason why the very first entry highlighted how Amityville became available for independent filmmakers to use as a free for all marketing gimmick. It’s the same reason why this series was strategically called “The Amityville IP” and the word “franchise” is always in quotations – these films have few ties to each other, there’s barely a “canon” for the mythology, and most of the films are little more than cash grabs.
We all implicitly understand this.

In light of a new report that twice-impeached, once-indicted former president Donald Trump was caught on tape talking about classified documents he had in his possession, “The View” host Alyssa Farah Griffin is feeling much more optimistic about the chance of her former boss going to prison.
On Wednesday, CNN reported that federal prosecutors now have a recording from a 2021 meeting, in which Trump explicitly acknowledges that he kept a classified document about a potential attack on Iran. This would fly in the face of Trump’s repeated claim that he declassified everything he had (sometimes just with his mind), and counts as an admission of a crime.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood is one of the more divisive entries of the long running franchise. Fans have always praised its depiction of Jason, with his weathered, rotted appearance and for Kane Hodder donning the mask for the very first time, but have criticized its more fantasy-based story direction and the fact that the exquisite gore sequences were so drastically cut by the MPAA that they practically neutered the movie. I think there’s some weight to these arguments, but I also think that many fans tend to criticize The New Blood for not being what they wanted it to be rather than enjoying it for what it is, partly because what it actually became is spectacularly out-of-left field and unexpected for what began as a straight-to-the-point summer camp slasher. Not even a decade after the original’s release, here comes Friday the 13th Part VII...

The National have been so good at producing National songs for so long that it’s been easy to take them for granted. Whenever the Brooklyn indie-rock institution passed a career point at which a lesser band might start breaking down — albums five, six, seven — they just got stronger, releasing some of their best work well into their second decade. In hindsight, this longevity seems obvious. The hallmarks of a National song — wry, affective lyrics; earthquake-proof song structures; painterly arrangements — seem tailor-built to sound more graceful with age.
And yet,...

Twice-impeached former president Donald Trump made history last week, when he became the first president — former or sitting — to be criminally indicted. But, according to Jimmy Fallon, that embarrassing piece of history will at least be scrubbed from the public consciousness in Florida.
On Tuesday, Trump was arraigned on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, to which he predictably pleaded not guilty. The charges stem from a 2016 payment of $130,000 made to adult film star Stormy Daniels, who alleges that the money was paid by Trump in an effort to keep her quiet about an affair the two had.
Though hush money in and of itself is not illegal, the crime comes from the assertion made by former Trump fixer Michael Cohen that the money allegedly came from Trump’s campaign for president — which is, of course, decidedly a no-no per U.S. campaign finance law. And, whether he’s convicted or acquitted,...

Tidying up after fascism is never easy. Whilst people like to imagine everything going back to normal as soon as the pressure is off, that requires an exhausting amount of organisation and hard work, plus there’s the problem that those who got into positions of authority during the previous regime often remain in place and continue to try to run things in accordance with their own preferences, regardless of the word from the top. This problem is particularly acute in prisons, which tend to suffer from political neglect at the best of times. It’s one thing to take action over people who have been imprisoned for obvious political reasons, but a lot more will is needed to deal with a system which is simply overwhelmed due to overzealous policing and a backlog of trials.
Prison 77 spans more than half a decade, beginning in 1976, three years after the fall.

The Vampire Diaries made Paul Wesley the obsession of Stefan stans for eight seasons. Turns out, Wesley counted himself among them. Landing the lead role on the series fulfilled that obsession.

Wesley was on a Television Critics Association panel for The Vampire Diaries in 2009. He explained his obsession with his character.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ was unlike any role Paul Wesley played before
Wesley already had 10 years of credits under his belt, but most were straightforward teen roles. A vampire was a bold new opportunity for him.
“That was what was so appealing about this role,” Wesley said. “There were so many pilots. I was reading so many pilot scripts. A vampire who is born in the 1860s and then has to mask himself as a high schooler, there was nothing like that. I was so, so obsessed with this character. I love this character so much.
