Peter Weller and Sam Elliott initially did not get along. As filming progressed, however, tensions smoothed out when Elliott came to support Weller's participation in the 1987 New York City Marathon, and because the two actors had the same agent.

Stunt Coordinator Alan Gibbs had planned a special rollover car stunt to do, but he got sick (from cancer) during the making of the film. The producers waited for the last minute to shoot the rollover scene, if he would have gotten better, but when he suddenly died, Jack Gill, who had taken over as Stunt Coordinator, had to perform the stunt instead.
James Borrelli was brought in to rewrite the script and make any scene that needed a laugh to feel like Lethal Weapon (1987) with the dialogue. James Glickenhaus loved Borrelli's additions to the script but he didn't have the agreement with the WGA to allow him credit for it.
