On October 8th 1988, an audience member died of a heart attack after christian fundamentalist terrorists threw a tear gas canister during a screening of the film at a cinema in the Montparnasse neighborhood of Paris.
Though the film received a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film, it failed to get the same recognition at the 1989's Oscars due to France submitting Camille Claudel (1988) as an official nominee instead.
