Billy Idol recently released a 40th anniversary expanded reissue of his seminal album Rebel Yell, and to celebrate the occasion, he performed the classic title track live on NBC’s Today.
The performance is notable in that Billy and his longtime guitarist Steve Stevens play the song semi-unplugged. Following an introduction by Al Roker, the duo are left to their lonesome on the sound stage, creating an intimate and up-close setting for the rendition.

Stevens guides the song’s arrangement with electric-acoustic strums that let Idol’s voice soar commandingly through the room. Not only does the stripped-down approach fit perfectly within the Today show’s studio format, it also offers an alternate spin on an otherwise rousing rock anthem.

Tori Amos and The Buggles’ Trevor Horn have teamed up for a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s 2012 single, “Swimming Pools (Drank),” reimagining it as a moody, modern piano ballad.
Amos and Horn’s take on the song arrives as the opening track on Horn’s new covers album, Echoes: Ancient & Modern. Built around a subdued piano and colored with silky strings, Amos’ multi-layered vocals lead the tune, placing Lamar’s lyricism in a new context. In the liner notes for the new album, Horn explained: “I thought of it as a kind of literate, modern American standard, a rap song open to reinterpretation. I wanted something distinctly 21st-century with original, eloquent lyrics, and my longtime engineer Tim Weidner suggested this.”
Continuing, Horn praised Amos’ creative contributions. “Tori Amos took the idea of adapting Kendrick Lamar’s psyched-up swagger in her stride and made it intensely cinematic,” he said. “I listened...

Lollapalooza 2021 was packed with about as much drama as one might expect from a massive festival held during a pandemic. Still, it was also full of life-affirming musical moments. Below, we present just a sampling of those joyful live performances.
Miley Cyrus Brings Out Billy Idol for “White Wedding”
From back-to-back hip-hop guests to non-stop mega-hits, there was a lot to love about Miley Cyrus’ headlining set on the first night of Lollapalooza. By far the biggest moment came when Billy Idol casually waltzed onstage to join her for “Night...

Teenagers aren’t typically known for being on time, but the crowd waiting to enter Lollapalooza on Thursday morning proved that generalization wrong. “By 11:30 a.m., it was already poppin’, and usually it’s dead then,” a 25-year-old woman told her friends while waiting for Jimmy Eat World to take the stage. She was right. Thousands of fans arrived early this year in hopes of staking out good sightlines, posing for photo ops, and roaming their first music festival in two years. Wearing fishnet stockings and cowboy hats galore,...

Summer’s here and time is right for dancing … on the deck of a large nautical vessel. During the late Seventies and early Eighties, the radio was dominated by silver-tongued white-dude crooners with names like Rupert and Gerry, emoting over balmy R&b beats, swaying saxes, and dishwasher-clean arrangements. Though it didn’t have a name, the genre — soft rock you could dance to — was dismissed by serious rock fans as fluffy and lame. But thanks to a web series in the mid-2000s, the style — belatedly named “yacht rock...

Los Angeles chillwave band Poolside has released a remix of Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without a Face.”
The Poolside version stays close to the original recording — from Idol’s second album, 1983’s Rebel Yell — keeping Perri Lister on backing vocals while adding lush, languid beats.
“I’m flattered that Poolside chose to remix ‘Eyes Without a Face,'” Idol said in a statement. “Steve Stevens and Keith Forsey helped me take the original recording somewhere special back in 1983. Poolside’s new remix guides the song in another direction with its chill vibe,...

The Notorious B.I.G. is the only solo male artist being inducted into the delayed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony next month. In fact, he is the only solo male to be chosen for the past three induction ceremonies. This astounding fact follows several years of voters catching up on such artists as Neil Diamond (2011), Donovan (2012), Randy Newman (2013), Peter Gabriel (2014), Cat Stevens (2014), Lou Reed (2015), Bill Withers (2015), Steve Miller (2016), Nile Rodgers (2017) and Tupac Shakur (2017) with none for 2018 and 2019.
It’s not for a lack of choices, however. Our new poll below offers 12 male artists who have been ignored for years despite being eligible for induction. Vote for the one man you feel most deserves to be selected for the 2021 ceremony.
We also recently offered very popular polls about which rock group you wanted next (won by The Go-Go’s) and which female artist you would choose (won by...

Shooting began this week in Maryland. The 20-minute dramatic shorts will cover a range of vital topics to today’s Black families ranging from breast cancer to mental health. The films will live under the BET Her “Her Stories” franchise, a platform to empower the next generation of Black women filmmakers.
“Even though I’ve licensed films to BET previously, being chosen to produce these crucial initiatives with all African-American women is such an honor,” said Smallwood.

The third season of Netflix’s Elite, a Spanish-language drama centered around the secret machinations of teens at a private high school, kicks off with a scene overlaid by Chvrches’ synth-pop song “Forever.” As plot lines unfurl across eight episodes, the song rears its head again, and again — and again, marking a near-takeover of the TV series.
While neither the band nor the song are ever mentioned by the show’s characters, “Forever” serves as a sonic motif for the entire season, thanks to its repeated appearance in flashbacks and moments of suspense.

When the city of New York decided to initiate a new campaign to prevent trucks and buses from idling, it knew it wasn’t exactly the sexiest or most-pressing issue New Yorkers face.
A new program unveiled Thursday encourages city residents to take cellphone footage of any idling vehicles and report them to the Department of Environmental Protection — and receive 25 percent of the fine as a reward.
But armed with a love of Eighties hits and puns, the department’s marketing team cold-called a representative for Billy Idol to see...

French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis is set to make her first English-language movie - she's been cast alongside Michael Madsen in The Midwife Crisis.
Paradis, the longterm partner of Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp, has made only a handful of forays into the acting industry since winning a Cesar Award for 1989 film Noce Blanche (A White Wedding).
Shooting on the film is due to start in New York in September, but The Midwife Crisis director Mabrouk el Mechri warns it won't be your average romantic comedy.
He tells the Hollywood Reporter, "It's not your typical cheesy romantic comedy. It's not Hugh Grant.
"I don't want to film New York like a tourist. No squirrels in Union Square, no zooming in from the Empire State Building to a close-up of Vanessa Paradis."...
