Unfortunately Trapper County War is just a bit too middle of the road.
tarbosh220008 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
When buddies Ryan Cassidy (Estes) and Bobby Kael (Blake) decide to trek across the country from New Jersey to California in the search for musical stardom in L.A., they truly make a fateful decision when they decide to stop in Trapper County, North Carolina. What seemed like an innocent and uneventful stopover in a small, rural community turns into a living nightmare when they discover that the hamlet is controlled by the maniacal and demented Luddigger family. However, there is one Luddigger who wants out, a girl named Lacey (Russell). Ryan and Bobby - with the new addition of Lacey, run for the border, but that inadvertently ignites the "Trapper County War". Soon, a good-hearted local man, a man with the names of two diverse presidents, Jefferson Carter (Hudson) reluctantly joins the fray. As a somewhat troubled Vietnam vet, this newly created "war" is a way to exorcise his demons. Just where local sheriff Frost (Hopkins) stands in all this is in question, but the evilness of good ol' boy Walt Luddigger is not. Who will come out victorious in this war? Yet again, the magical year of 1989 churns out another video for the VHS-hungry shelves of the world's video stores. Amazingly, director Worth Keeter directed L.A. Bounty (1989) the same year. If you must see one Worth Keeter movie from 1989, see L.A. Bounty. It seems he expended all his energy on that one. While TCW is technically well-made, it's really just another backwoods bonanza, the likes of which we've all seen so many times before. Hunter's Blood (1986) and Edge of Honor (1991) are versions of this tale that are more entertaining than this one. TCW falls into the classic stereotype of the "city boys" being good, kind and wise, and the country folk as being overalls-wearing dimwits who just want to do bad things to you. To be fair and balanced, the Bo Hopkins and Ernie Hudson characters are not like that, but you catch our meaning.

The movie itself is just too "normal". It's very straightforward and takes no chances whatsoever. If it just had a little taste of the weirdness quotient, it would have risen up considerably in our minds. But alas, it is slow and standard, and not a lot of exciting stuff happens. But that being said, our two heroes do have a classically 80's dress sense, with stonewashed jeans being the wardrobe staple. Their haircuts do indeed say "aspiring 80's music stars", so that was appropriate. Of course, there's yet another Mark Paul Gosselaar lookalike in the Bobby character, played by Noah Blake. Ah, to look like Zack Morris in the 80's. Apparently it was a popular look, and if you were blessed enough to have genetics that even remotely resembled MPG, the world was truly your oyster. Now just why these two boys would camp out in Trapper County of all places, especially after not receiving the warmest of welcomes, remains unknown.

While it does feature the country-rock stylings of a band called Waycross Express with their songs "I Love My Country" and "Certified Fool", and Ernie Hudson does his best, unfortunately Trapper County War is just a bit too middle of the road to really please that many people.

Crappy County War
power-106 June 2000
This is probably among the worst movies ever made...... I saw it with a friend and I could not stop laughing, not because the movie was amusing, It was pathetic !!!! Mrs Russell & Mr Swayze are among the less talented actors in Hollywood (witch is an achievement in itself) :)

How come this movie was ever produced is a mystery to me...

But here is the plot: "If you have some problems with hillbillies & inbreeds... shoot them with a bazoka :)

I'm only sorry I could not give a lower grade than 1 !!

Sometimes the best surprise is no surprise ........

Very entertaining Southern rednecks vs. city boys in the backwoods of Trapper County. The cast, Robert Estes, Betsy Russell, Bo Hopkins, and Don Swaze among others are convincing, and the Luddigger family of hicks solidly stereotyped with their pickups and hound dogs. What you get is a hunted in the woods film that is easily on a par with recommended similar films like "Hunter's Blood". The rocky countryside is used to full advantage, making the colorful characters even more believable. Sure "Trapper County War" doesn't break any new ground, but it is solid entertainment, and should be sought out by anyone who likes mountain pursuit movies. Sometimes the best surprise is no surprise.

I enjoyed the movie
cjthomas20 February 2001
I could relate to some of the characters in this movie, which may be a bit scary to some out there, but I live in the Ozarks and some of the characters in this movie were real to me. It had some good action and the corruption in this small town may have been a bit exaggerated for the movie effect, but not so far from fact as you may think if you never have lived or known people in the hills and real small towns where one or just a few families can run a town. I related this movie to a bit of Deliverance and First Blood in plot and action.

good Friday night action film

Warning: Spoilers
o.k guys so it may not be the greatest action film ever but i found this to be a great Friday night in with the lads film.grab a few beers and order a pizza and enjoy a good senseless 80s action film. so don swayze may not be in brother Patrick's class when it comes to acting skills but he puts all his heart and effort into his performance.you really end up disliking swayzes character with a passion and you will notice hes not the most well groomed police officer you would come across.i first saw this film when it was released on video i believe it has now been deleted from the uk market.it has took me nearly 16 years to get hold of a copy but I'm glad I've been reacquainted with one of my favourite action films from the late 80s.

Avoid those off-the-highway detours.

This movie was a very well made and enjoyable little film. The old story about crazed backwoods creeps is well played here. The heros inadvertantly drive in to trouble in a small Southern town. The hillbilly loons are well played and resist the over-the-top performances. In an early role, Rob Estes is terrific as Ryan, the city boy who joins forces with a Vietnam vet to save a young lady from the "hillbillies". These "hillbillies" will never make it to Beverly Hills. I really enjoyed this film....very entertaining.

Depends on tastes.

I rated this movie as a 7 because like the last reviewer, this movie made me and my friends laugh so hard we all got dizzy. The plot is poor at best, and the film quality also is lacking. However as long as you rent this movie and view it as a comedy, then you will not be disappointed. Non-stop laughs await!

I do admit thought the movie starts slowly, but it really picks up towards the end. Another plus is if you have a "Family Video" outlet, or similar franchise, you can rent this movie for about .25-.50 cents for 5 nights! (plus on some holidays, movies are free!) So as long as you can find a copy for under $5, its definitely worth the price.
