It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Hughes wrote a script that truly reflected the life of an average teen,...

"The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" is likely not remembered by many people, except for Billy Crystal himself. The variety/talk show ran from January 30 through February 27 in 1982, lasting a grand total of five episodes. Crystal was already a successful comedian and beloved figure in the industry thanks to the popularity of his 1970s stand-up work and his role in the 1977 sitcom "Soap," so he had connections. He was able to secure guest appearances from many of his famous comedian friends, including Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Robin Williams, and John Candy for the debut episode. Subsequent guests included Morgan Fairchild, the Manhattan Transfer, Nell Carter, Shelley Duvall, Cindy Williams, Al Jarreau, and Smokey Robinson.
"The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour" fell right in between "Soap" and "Saturday Night Live" on Crystal's professional timeline, and it might be considered something of a dip in his career. The show was canceled after only two episodes aired,...

In Hollywood, casting decisions can make or break a movie. Sometimes, the biggest roles almost end up in different hands, which changes the story. Take Ghostbusters, for example, the classic film with the guys chasing ghosts. Well, imagine if Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts were carrying those proton packs! Alongside them, crazy, right?
A still from Ghostbusters (1984)
We all know the Ghostbusters crew, isn’t that so? However, they might have looked totally different. Back in ’84, Ivan Reitman dropped this flick about a ghost-catching scientist in New York City, and it blew up. Fans and critics couldn’t get enough of it. Then, in 1989, a sequel was released, but it did not quite hit the same high notes.
Attempts to make a third Ghostbusters film persevered for quite a while, yet hit a roadblock with Harold Ramis’ passing in 2014. Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot of the franchise featured an all-female team with nods to the originals.

It might be hard to believe, but it has been 30 years since the world lost one of the most beloved screen presences in modern times, John Candy. And while we can honor his too-short life and career by watching some of his greatest movies, we’ll never get to experience what his children did. But they are at least letting fans in on their personal feelings for their father, who died on March 4th, 1994.
Posting on her personal Instagram, John Candy’s eldest daughter Jennifer shared a photo of the two with the caption, “30 years ago today … feels like both a lifetime with and without you . Miss you and love you always”, along with a heart emoji. Jennifer had previously said, “He was your everyday kind of guy and a great dad and very lovable…Very much similar to characters that he was on film.”

You know what they say about Old Man Marley, the South Bend Shovel Slayer? Back in ’58, he murdered his whole family and half the people on a suburban Chicago block with a snow shovel. He’s been hiding out there ever since, disguising the remains of his misdeeds by turning victims to mummies, and using the dust off their bones to salt our streets.
That’s what the kids in the McCallister house tell each other every cold December night when the lonely stranger played by Roberts Blossom appears outside their window. It’s of course a lie, but the truth was originally a lot more enigmatic in the early drafts of the Home Alone screenplay penned by John Hughes, who was a maestro of family and youth entertainment during the 1980s and early ‘90s.
At its inception, Home Alone was both a departure and a return to the well for Hughes.

By the early 1990s, it was still fairly rare to see a Hollywood production invade New England to shoot a film. Things had certainly been made here: Ever heard of Jaws? It was shot entirely on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. And I made a documentary about another one: Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, which was shot entirely in Maine in 1988. In fact, much of my documentary film work has focused on stories native to New England. But, still, we didn’t see the kind of movie activity and buzz that we see nowadays. Despite its natural beauty of mountains, rocky coastlines, and beautiful beaches, New England can be difficult (and expensive) to navigate for a film crew. What’s more, during certain months of the year our weather can be unpredictable and harsh. We’re known for our Nor’easters and blizzards and even the occasional hurricane in the autumn months.

There are “child stars,” and then there are performers that start working during childhood only to become bona fide, beloved screen icons, enjoying long, varied careers throughout their lives. Following in the footsteps of Shirley Temple, Natalie Wood and Mickey Rooney, Macaulay Culkin has — for three decades and counting — been a contemporary standard bearer for that personal and professional journey.
Culkin became a full-fledged cultural phenomenon after the explosive commercial success of his fifth film, 1990’s “Home Alone,” which he made when he was just 10 years old. The film grossed $476 million worldwide, due in direct part to his mischievous-yet-vulnerable performance as Kevin McAllister. But beginning in his teenage years, Culkin began seeking projects that piqued his artistic interests rather than sustaining his immediate and colossal celebrity. Even without any expectation for those subsequent efforts to reach the same stratospheric heights as his early breakthrough, Culkin’s star wattage has barely flickered,...

I remember the day — March 4, 1994 — when I learned that John Candy, big of heart and large of funny bone, had died from an apparent heart attack at age 43. I was a movie critic and a film writer in the Life section of USA Today, distracted by the Winter Olympics TV coverage of Nancy Kerrigan’s silver medal comeback. But the minute I heard that one of the warmest and funniest actors around had passed away, I poured myself immediately into writing his appreciation.
As someone who grew up in Buffalo, I was lucky to have early access to “Sctv,” the Canadian sketch-comedy counterpart to “Saturday Night Live,” long before the series was picked up by NBC. I was cued into the genius of Candy and his clowning cohorts Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as they inhabited sundry out-sized characters who worked at a fictitious television station.

Do not adjust your phone screen. You are not experiencing deja vu. Netflix’s list of new releases for July 2023 does indeed look quite a bit like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest new arrival this month is the conclusion of The Witcher season 3 on July 27. It seems like only 29 days ago that The Witcher season 3 premiered. And that’s because it was! Now Henry Cavill’s arc as Geralt of Rivia is set to officially end with this batch of three episodes. Get ready for the Liam Hemsworth era, Witcher fans. Other Netflix Original series of note in July 2023 are The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 on July 6, Sonic Prime season 2 on July 13 and the animated comedy Captain Fall on July 28.
Meanwhile it’s a big month for Netflix’s original movies department. Adam Devine-starring comedy The Out-Laws premieres on July 7. That will be followed by Bird Box...

Update: Variety is reporting that the Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks John Candy documentary will likely be picked up by Amazon’s Prime Video, with the comedy said to be in negotiations for the film. Colin Hanks will be directing the documentary, with Reynolds on board as a producer. Hanks, whose father Tom Hanks memorably co-starred with the late comic legend in Splash and Volunteers (which also starred Hanks’ future wife Rita Wilson), apparently has the full corporation of the Candy family. This includes his widow, Rose and their two children, Jen and Chris. The film will reportedly contain home videos and never seen footage from the archive, as well as interviews with Candy’s friends and family. No release date is set yet, although given that John Candy is a Canadian icon, maybe a fall TIFF debut is in the cards?

Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire a John Candy documentary from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds, TheWrap has confirmed.
Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and star of “Life in Pieces,” “Orange County” and “A Friend of the Family,” will direct the project while Reynolds, star of “Deadpool,” “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project,” will produce alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The documentary feature will explore John Candy’s life and career, including starring roles in “The Great Outdoors,” “Spaceballs,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Uncle Buck” and “Cool Runnings.” The actor was on the verge of establishing himself as a comic actor who could also handle dramatic roles in weightier fare like “Only the Lonely” and Oliver Stone’s “JFK” when he died in 1994 of a heart attack at the age of 43.

The late comedian John Candy is getting the documentary treatment from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds.
Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire an untitled film that Hanks has been quietly directing. Reynolds — who, like Candy, hails from Canada — is producing alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The film will explore the life and legacy of the iconic funnyman Candy, who died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43. But insiders say the film will go beyond the persona and delve into the inner life that Candy kept private off-screen. With the full support of Candy’s widow, Rose, and their two children, Jen and Chris, Hanks will utilize never-before-seen home videos, archives and interviews with the family to explore the man behind the movie star. Dance rock sensation LCD Soundsystem hasn’t released an album since 2017, but the band more than made up for lost time with a single track that gave one of the year’s most ambitious new American movies its greatest sequence.
At the very end of “White Noise,” writer/director Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel, the main characters walk into a supermarket as the entire room breaks into dance. “New Body Rhumba,” the latest composition by LCD frontman James Murphy, provides yet another example of the energizing synths and bass combo that the band has done so well since they first dominated the New York indie rock scene two decades ago. Set to a dizzying arrangement of dances across aisles and checkout counters, it transforms the entire movie into a surreal modernist musical of the highest order.

This Sunday, you can watch The Holiday Sitter, starring Jonathan Bennett and George Krissa, based on an original story by Bennett.
It's a genuinely funny movie about Sam (Bennett), a confirmed bachelor with no interest in children, who winds up watching his niece and nephew over the Christmas holiday. Everything changes when he meets their neighbor, Jason (Krissa).
We jumped on the phone with Bennett to talk about it.
Hi, Jonathan. How are you?
I'm wonderful. How are you?
I'm good, thank you. You know, you're somewhat of a legend at Hallmark.
Oh my God. Stop it. Tell me more.
Every time I ask somebody who they'd like to work with, you're almost always at the top of their list.
You're lying to me. Now you're just flattering me. And let me tell you, flattery will get you everywhere with me, okay?
Yeah, people just really admire your work. I think that's fantastic.

In the 2003 comedy "Elf," Will Ferrell plays Buddy, a regular human who was raised at the North Pole as a Christmas elf and works in Santa's Workshop. When he finds out he's really a human from New York City, Buddy travels to The Big Apple to find his father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan). A timeless winter holiday classic, "Elf" is one of the best Christmas movies ever ... which only makes it all the more amusing that a huge chunk of the film's set would have been fitting for a horror movie instead.
Searching for his father, Buddy parades around the bustling streets of New York City, and it's obvious the film's exterior version of Manhattan is the real deal. The New York interior shots, on the other hand, is where the movie tricks us all. Ad-libbing is imaginative and spontaneous. Comedians who yearn to be unshackled from every single word in the script relish opportunities to show off their natural wits and humor. The late writer-director-producer John Hughes had no problem releasing the cuffs. Because of this, his 1989 comedy "Uncle Buck" became a playground for John Candy. Before that, the late Canadian actor starred in another Hughes movie, "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." That time, the improv between him and co-star Steve Martin got out of hand.
In "Home Alone" -- also written and produced by Hughes -- Candy helps Catherine O'Hara get home to her unattended son for Christmas. But in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," he's the main force that prevents Steve Martin from making it home to his wife and children for Thanksgiving. Martin plays Neal Page, a marketing executive who's in a rush to fly out of New York to Chicago, but a...

Thanks to the Duffer Brothers, I can no longer watch any Sean Astin movie without mourning the tragic death of Bob Newby from "Stranger Things," and "The Goonies" is no exception. In the classic childhood adventure, Mikey Walsh (Astin) leads a group of friends –- collectively known as the Goonies –- in their search for a hidden treasure to save their neighborhood from being demolished to make way for a golf resort. "Superman" director Richard Donner directed the film that was penned by Chris Columbus, who later directed the first two "Home Alone" movies.
But it was Steven Spielberg, the film's executive producer, who came up with the story. The revered filmmaker got the idea for the movie while filming another movie, which is not uncommon. Who’s in the mood for some giant panckes? 1989’s Uncle Buck is arguably John Candy’s second-best movie ever. John Hughes’ Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is probably the film he’s most remembered for, and the director/star combo worked so well they re-teamed for Uncle Buck two years later. This family comedy was the biggest hit of Candy’s career. Notably, it introduced the world to Macaulay Culkin, whose precocious performance led to Home Alone a year later. Looking back at the movie now, it’s a too-often ignored classic, with a Candy performance that mixes humor, pathos, and even a touch of menace in a way only the late, great actor could.
This month’s John Hughes Revisited is written, edited, and narrated by Matthew Hacienda.

When Warner Bros. Discovery announced its much-anticipated Batgirl movie would be shelved, the news sent shockwaves through Hollywood. While the studio eventually expressed concerns the work done by directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah failed to live up to “spectacle that audiences have come to expect from DC fare,” the final decision to leave the film unreleased, despite reportedly having spent upwards of 90 million on it, felt unprecedented in the ever-expanding age of superhero movies.
It was heartbreaking on multiple levels. Adil & Bilall had already proven themselves adept big budget filmmakers on the brilliant Bad Boys for Life while the eye-catching cast included J.K. Simmons getting another go as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser continuing the “Franaissance” as villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton donning the Batsuit for the first time in nearly two decades. Simmons getting another go as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser continuing the “Franaissance” as villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton donning the Batsuit for the first time in nearly two decades. Arguably the saddest aspect, however, was the fact it robbed Leslie Grace of a potentially star-making turn as Barbara Gordon,...

Amy Madigan found her breakout role as Annie Kinsella in the 1989 sports fantasy drama "Field of Dreams," starring alongside Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and then-child actress Gaby Hoffmann. That same year, Hoffmann and Madigan also both appeared in one of my favorite John Hughes movies: the comedy "Uncle Buck." The movie's premise is simple but charming: a bachelor becomes an unlikely babysitter for his brother's kids. Whereas Hoffmann plays Maizy, the niece of the loveable but slobbish and irresponsible titular character (John Candy), Madigan plays his loyal and impatient girlfriend, Chanice Kobolowski.

Few actors seemed to have quite as firm a grasp on John Hughes' approach to comedy as John Candy. The treasured Canadian funnyman could handle slapstick and sentiment with equal grace, which was the key to so many of Hughes' movies as a writer, director, and producer. It's this skill that allowed Candy to go from busting guts to breaking hearts in a film like 1987's "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," or even mix pathos with morbid humor during the brief scenes he shares with Catherine O'Hara in 1990's "Home Alone."

Until very recently, filmmaker John Hughes was viewed as an untouchable icon. The director, writer, and producer was involved in some of the best live-action comedies of the 1980s, including "National Lampoon's Vacation," "Weird Science," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off, "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," "Uncle Buck," and "She's Having a Baby." Despite his impressive resume, Hughes is arguably best known for his trilogy of coming-of-age films featuring Molly Ringwald: "Sixteen Candles," "Pretty in Pink," and seminal classic, "The Breakfast Club." Hughes completely changed the landscape of teen cinema in the 1980s, showing that there was more to the genre than raunchy...

Video Version of this Article Photo: John Candy Born in Ontario, Canada and becoming a household name in the United States thanks to his role on the influential Canadian sketch series, ‘Sctv’, John Candy quickly became an influential comic actor. From Gus Polinski, ‘’the polka king of the Midwest’’ to Barf, half man/half dog, John Candy was known for seeming to feel larger than life. John Candy’s characters being larger than life matched with his own personality, which seemed to be that of a giant Teddy bear. The director who best used this lovable star is John Hughes, the king of eighties films. With Hughes’ films ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’, ‘the Great Outdoors’, and ‘Uncle Buck’, John Candy could bring his larger-than-life personality to starring roles. These films, being more family-oriented than his previous vehicles like ‘The Blues Brothers’ or ‘Stripes’, caused John Candy to cement himself in the childhoods of many,...
