Ask the British national treasure – star of Mike Leigh films aplenty, as well as countless TV and stage roles – about any of her brilliant performances by 6pm Sunday
How long can you be a national treasure for? Alison Steadman arguably holds some sort of record: ever since her breakthrough performance in the TV version of Abigail’s Party, back in 1977, she’s been a brilliant, comforting, spiky staple of British screen and stage.
Her collaborations with ex-husband Mike Leigh (she was pregnant with their first son shooting Abigail’s Party) are what defined her early career in the public consciousness. Life is Sweet, Hard Labour, Nuts in May; later the likes of Topsy-Turvy.

For the second year in a row, the race for best actress is wide open, with key precursors to the Academy Awards yet to be determined.
The Oscar nominees are Jessica Chastain for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures), Olivia Colman for “The Lost Daughter” (Netflix), Penélope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers” (Sony Pictures Classics), Nicole Kidman for “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon Studios) and Kristen Stewart for “Spencer” (Neon/Topic Studios). No performance is from a best picture nominee, a first since the 2005 lineup. And none of the contenders was nominated for a BAFTA Award, which “Nomadland” star Frances McDormand won prior to her Oscar victory last year. So how does each become a winner (in some cases for the second time)?
In a ceremony closed to media last month, the Globes awarded Kidman the lead actress drama prize for her turn as classic TV star Lucille Ball in the Aaron Sorkin feature.

The veteran actor on dancing with Helen Mirren, starring in Roger Michell’s final film, and why he turned down the role of Del Boy… and an OBE
Actor Jim Broadbent, 72, was born in Lincolnshire and studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (Lamda). U.K. director Mike Leigh directs films in a wide range of moods but his working-class dramas are what made his name. All or Nothing is an emotionally punishing story of everyday life on a lower rung of a stagnant economy, where nobody has dreams and pessimism is the order of the day. The bitterness and anger are most evident in the abusive attitudes and verbal brutality from one generation to the next, even with the caring, sensitive Penny (Lesley Manville) and the inoffensive Phil (Timothy Spall). Leigh’s players craft heartbreaking characters whose individual miseries can’t be dismissed. We invest heavily in the hope of a positive outcome even as everything we see says, ‘no.’ Yet the film’s honesty doesn’t want us to give up on these people.

Jon Gregory, editor of such films as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Bruges has died, a representative confirmed to Deadline. He was 77.
Gregory worked with Mike Leigh across the director’s storied career, from an early short called The Short & Curlies to one of Leigh’s first features, High Hopes, to some of the director’s best-known work — such as Life Is Sweet, Naked and Secrets & Lies — to one of his most recent works, Peterloo. Leigh remembered his frequent collaborator in a piece posted by The Guardian today.
In it, Leigh praised Gregory’s ability to compose complex component parts into a cohesive whole. “He brought to the task his unique characteristic skill, imagination, sensitivity and sophistication, while, as always, staying true to the material,” wrote the director. He praised Gregory’s sense of when not to edit, as well.

Harry Clein, 82, co-founder of Hollywood PR agencies Clein + Feldman and Clein + White, died June 18 in Atlanta. He suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
I first met Clein in Manhattan in 1978 when I worked in the United Artists publicity bullpen at 729 Seventh Ave. He represented Alan J. He admired my Annie Hall vests and fedoras; we bonded over his encyclopedic knowledge of film and Broadway musicals, and remained friends as he founded bicoastal press agency Clein + Feldman in 1981 with Bruce Feldman. Timothy Spall stars in a fascinating, surprisingly non-morbid look into the life of Albert Pierrepoint, England’s reluctant celebrity hangman who dispatched hundreds of convicted killers, including Ruth Ellis and John Christie, not to mention 47 Nazi war criminals, in a literal marathon of the gallows. The artist of the noose kept up a double life to separate his execution duties from his domestic marriage … until General Montgomery blew his cover of anonymity. Eddie Marsan and Juliet Stevenson provide terrific acting support in this undeservedly obscure gem from director Adrian Shergold.

Sure, you may not be his biggest fan, but it’s hard to argue against the critical reception that his filmography has received over the years. Nobody stands up for Britons in the lower class trenches like the fierce, opinionated and outright brilliant Mike Leigh; his unusual writing and directing method yields terrific results in his first feature made for TV. And the early performances of Tim Roth, Phil Daniels and Gary Oldman should be the stuff of acting legend, ’80s style.

Anorexia is one of those subjects that seem tailor-made for a medium as darkly fascinated by bodies and self-destructive obsessions as film, and yet it always comes across as phony, simply because actors can never really look anorexic; thin and baggy-eyed is a long way from the sight of skin sucked so tightly over bones that it appears that a person’s body might crumple in on itself at any moment. That doesn’t mean that movies can’t tackle the psychology, but with only a few exceptions (e.g., the English writer-director Mike Leigh’s 1990 film Life Is Sweet, which depicts a young, working-class bulimic woman), films about eating disorders take the form of hokey, know-the-symptoms public service pamphlets aimed at teens. There’s a reason why the topic is popularly associated with cheesy TV movies. The Netflix-produced To The Bone, which was written and directed by TV ...

Trista Sutter admits that upon suffering a seizure while vacationing with her family in Croatia, she asked herself, "Why me?"
"All I remember was feeling very dizzy and nauseous, and the next thing I knew, I was in this dream," the former Bachelorette star recalled on Tuesday's Good Morning America. "The only way I can describe it is was like a white euphoria."
Trista's husband, Ryan Sutter, said the incident was especially scary for the couple's 8-year-old daughter, Blakesley, whom Trista fell on top of while seizing. "I heard Blakesley screaming, 'Mommy, Mommy," Ryan remembered. "Trista had fallen onto Blakesley in a sort of convulsive state."

The penultimate season of HBO's Game of Thrones has added the legendary Jim Broadbent to its cast, according to EW. As usual, details on his character are pretty much nonexistent, and all we have to go on is that the role will be a "significant" one. Speculation seems to be pointing to one of the maesters Sam is set to study under at the Citadel (Archmaester Marwyn, Aka Marwyn the Mage, perhaps?), but now that the show has surpassed George R.R. Martin's source material, it's quite possible he'll be playing someone we haven't even encountered in the books yet. Broadbent has starred in a wide array of classic movies over the years (Time Bandits, Brazil, Life is Sweet etc), but he'll be best known to the younger generation as Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter movies. Game of Thrones returns for its seventh season next year.

"I have a weak bladder when it comes to this sort of stuff, so be careful," "Tangerine" director Sean Baker warns at the beginning of his trip inside the Criterion closet, and though he doesn't get that excited, his enthusiasm is infectious nonetheless. As Magnolia mounts pathbreaking Oscar campaigns for transgender stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez (for Best Actress) and Mya Taylor (for Best Supporting Actress), his choices are a reminder than his sun-kissed L.A. adventure, shot on an iPhone, is rooted in the vernacular of the art film. Read More: "How Sean Baker Shot 'Tangerine' on an iPhone and Invented a New Cinema (Exclusive Video)" Funnily enough, of the growing pile of Blu-rays and DVDs he selects, it's Mike Leigh's "Life Is Sweet" (1990) and "Naked" (1993) that Baker says influenced "Tangerine." One of the greatest surprises of the year was Sean Baker’s wonderful and vibrant “Tangerine,” and while the film is launching an Oscar campaign, the filmmaker has already been bestowed the highest honor of the cinephile world: being invited to peruse the shelves of The Criterion Collection's closet. Bearing that wide grin that is familiar to everyone who has seen one of these videos before, Baker opens up the magical room and warns the cameraman that he has “a weak bladder for this kind of stuff,” but who among us could remain in full control of our faculties when entering that holy place? Fortunately for fans of Baker’s film, the director isn’t just Christmas shopping and upgrading titles from laserdisc; he also lets us in on some of his influences: Mike Leigh’s “Naked” and “Life Is Sweet” are cited as being major influences, specifically as seen...

Chicago – The thing that can be said for British writer/director Mike Leigh is that it’s never known what story may capture his fancy. The auteur of “Happy-Go-Lucky,” “Topsy-Turvy,” “Secrets and Lies” and “Life is Sweet” now tackles the last quarter century of a notable British painter’s life, through his strange maneuverings and unconventionality, in “Mr. Turner.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The Mister is J.M.W. Turner, an English Romantic landscape artist, whose form elevated the genre into a pre-impressionism age – making Turner a rather controversial figure in his time. The film plays upon that theme, as Timothy Spall portrays the painter in Mike Leigh’s script as a prolific adventurer and eccentric. Since Turner is a landscape painter, the director and cinematographer (Dick Pope) create an expansive cinematic canvas that “sees” Turner’s vision. The story, however, is a mishmash of scenes rather than a cohesive narrative, and...

You’d be hard pressed to find a company in the film industry that’s as beloved as The Criterion Collection. Pricey though they are, the boutique label remains as popular in the film-loving set as ever. One of those fans is director Mike Leigh (who has three films on the label: "Naked," "Life Is Sweet," and "Topsy-Turvy"), and as part of the press tour for his latest, “Mr. Turner,” the British filmmaker stopped by the Criterion offices and shot a video inside their hallowed closet. It would be easy for filmmakers to grow so hardened and cynical over a career that they lose sight of their love of the art form. That’s why it’s so great when someone retains their passion for cinema like Leigh does in this eight-minute-long video. Barring a reference to the recently released Blu-ray of “A Hard Day’s Night,” all of Leigh...

Timothy Spall and director Mike Leigh have worked together on five different films, including Secrets & Lies (1996), which resulted in Leigh’s first Oscar nomination, and Topsy-Turvy (1999). Leigh has received seven Oscar nominations since 1997, but Spall has never received recognition from the Academy. That could change this year with Leigh’s Mr. Turner, which features Spall as the British landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. The film has been praised and Spall’s portrayal of the obsessive painter garnered him the best actor award at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, which makes him the latest character actor to get a boost from a Leigh film.
Spall’s Mr. Turner co-star, Lesley Manville, has worked with Leigh for multiple films and received a BAFTA nomination for Another Year (2010). Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Brenda Blethyn, Spall’s co-stars in Secrets & Lies, both received Oscar nominations for their roles in the film.

Mike Leigh's process—which includes a lengthy rehearsal process before shooting even begins—means that his films can come as quickly as a couple years apart, or in the case of "Mr. Turner," four years on since his last effort, 2010's lovely "Another Year." The latter won an Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes, and the director is back on the Croisette in Competition this year with a period drama about famed artist J.M.W. Turner. Timothy Spall takes the lead role—his fifth film with Leigh following "Life Is Sweet," "Secrets & Lies," "Topsy-Turvy" and "All Or Nothing"—in the movie that chronicles the eccentric life of the painter, who hangs with aristocracy and prostitutes, and who once strapped himself to the mast of a ship so he could accurately paint a snowstorm. And in these two clips we see Turner as both a man of the people and a furious artist,...

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Next up, the first of two British veterans in the lineup: Mike Leigh's "Mr. Turner." The director: Mike Leigh (British, 71 years old). Few filmmakers have essayed the mundane woes (and occasional joys) of Britain's working-to-middle classes with the vivid specificity of Mike Leigh, though given his distinctive vernacular and customarily heightened sense of the everyday, it's not quite accurate to classify him as a kitchen-sink realist. Either way, as both a playwright and filmmaker, he's as significant and influential a figure on the UK cultural lanscape as John Osborne or Alan Bennett. A Rada acting student turned art school graduate,...

Very little information has emerged about Mike Leigh’s forthcoming, currently untitled biopic about British painter J.M.W. Turner, but the prospect of Leigh reteaming with Timothy Spall is motivation enough for me to keep an eye out for this film. Today, we have a first look at Spall in costume as Turner, which you can check out above.
Leigh has worked with Spall many times before, on films including Secrets & Lies, Topsy-Turvy, All or Nothing, Life Is Sweet and Home Sweet Home, though the Turner biopic will mark their first time collaborating in over a decade. Both seem passionate about the project; Leigh has worked for almost twenty years to get the film made, while Spall signed on for the lead role very early on.

For all their worthiness, few of Britain's greatest artists - Constable, Gainsborough, Holbein, Hart - have been afforded their own big-screen biopic. But Mike Leigh and his team have found plenty of material in the life of J. M. W. Turner, the son of a wigmaker and a butcher's daughter, a man with who lays claim to being one of the country's finest ever water colourists.Leigh's latest, currently going by the name Untitled 13, has a first-look image of his old Topsy-Turvy, Secrets & Lies, Life Is Sweet and All Or Nothing mucker Timothy Spall as the painter and printmaker. He's at sea, which in Turner's case normally spells only one thing: catastrophe! Turner, for those who've hastily checked the Tate Gallery's website studied his oeuvre as assiduously as we have, was a specialist in shipwrecks, fires and other disasters. He was, in many ways, the Michael Bay of the Romantic movement.
