The movie genre of actions is often associated with the male leading characters who fight for the world’s peace or power. However, there are some female action leads who make their movies stand out among the great number of the genre’s features.
Here are 7 of the most memorable female-led action movies, chosen by Redditors.
Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)
This martial arts feature probably comes first to mind in this respect, as Uma Thurman’s Bride is one of the most deadly and cultish onscreen assassins in history. Everyone saw Quentin Tarantino’s timeless masterpiece at least once in their lives, and it’s worth it.
Aliens (1986)
Long before the modern action heroines, 38 years ago, Sigourney Weaver starred as the courageous survivor of an alien attack, Ellen Ripley, who manages to go head-to-head with the Xenomorph and defeat it, unlike the great number of people around her.

In 1990, Luc Besson's famous action film Nikita hit theaters. The movie about a street criminal turned secret agent was a huge success in France and around the world.
There is an opinion that the director has been doing nothing but making different versions of Nikita all his life, distracted from time to time by purely commercial projects.
The central character of his universe is a female fighter, a cold-blooded killer with a tragic personal history. Viewers saw a similar type in Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, Lucy with Scarlett Johansson in the main role, and Anna – another spy drama that recently got a second life thanks to its popularity on Netflix.
However, when talking about Nikita and its imitators, many forget about the cult series that debuted in 1997 and ran for five seasons – La Femme Nikita. And just recently, Redditors remembered the best spy show of the 1990s.

4K just got a whole lot sharper, as Sony will release Luc Besson’s 1990 action-thriller La Femme Nikita on the format in June, joining other Besson films like 1994’s The Professional and 1997’s The Fifth Element on the format. This release — which comes in a slick steel book — is restored from the original camera negative, with a 4K image that boasts 2160p Ultra High Definition.
Here is Sony’s official writeup for the movie: “From director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) comes the must-see thriller about a vicious street punk turned sexy, sophisticated and lethally dangerous assassin. Starring Anne Parillaud, Jeanne Moreau and Jean Reno, La Femme Nikita is “slick, stylish and tremendously entertaining” (The New York Times)! Rescued from death row by a top-secret agency, Nikita (Anne Parillaud) is slowly transformed from a cop-killing junkie into a cold-blooded bombshell with a license to kill. But when she begins the deadliest mission of her career,...

Caleb Landry Jones, who won best actor at last year’s Cannes for “Nitram,” is set to play the lead in Luc Besson’s “DogMan.”
Besson penned “DogMan” and will direct it, on top of producing via his banner Lbp. EuropaCorp, the company founded by Besson and now owned by New York-based Vine Alternative, is co-producing the movie.
“DogMan” is expected to enter production in May and will be shot mainly in France and the U.S. The film tells the sprawling story of a child, bruised by life, who grows to find his salvation through the love of his dogs.
Producers are Virginie Besson-Silla, who produced Besson’s last five films including “Lucy” as well as Guy Ritchie’s “Revolver,” and Steve Rabineau, who joined Lbp in 2019 after a successful career as a top agent at WME for over three decades.

Last week, three studios made major announcements that suggest Premium VOD income isn’t enough to prioritize it over other platforms; this week, the VOD charts suggests a drop in the momentum toward home viewing options. This may be temporary, with “Candyman” (Universal/$19.99) scheduled for release September 16, but Disney will present the rest of its 2021 movie slate as initial theatrical exclusives. Universal placed “Halloween Kills” day-and-date on Peacock October 15, and Paramount announced that it would replace chairman and and CEO Jim Gianopulos with the more Paramount+-friendly Brian Robbins, currently head of Nickelodeon.
Warner Bros. provides same-day HBO Max access for its theatrical releases, but James Wan’s “Malignant,” a $40 million-budgeted horror film, mustered only 735,000 viewings (per Samba TV’s estimate). Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” this weekend and next month’s “Dune” should do much better. Disney’s “Free Guy,” just announced for September 28 PVOD, should also find high interest.

“La Femme Nikita” was almost certainly not the first film about a young woman rescued from life on the streets to become a cold-blooded assassin, but the success of Luc Besson’s 1990 thriller set a template that no one seems able to shake, even 31 years later. The new film “The Protégé” follows in the footsteps of “Nikita” and far too many of its successors, with just about half as much awareness as it needs to get out of their shadow.
Director Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) has become a reliable provider of sturdy, polished action, but he’s seldom been able to bring to the screen what wasn’t already on the page. And after scripting “The Mechanic,” “The Equalizer” and its sequel, screenwriter Richard Wenk appears to have nothing new to contribute to the decreasingly rarified subgenre. Pablo Picasso was apparently supposed to have said “good artists copy, great artists steal”. In the world of transnational cinema this is especially true when we see re-imaginings (to use the modern parlance) of particular films. With Luc Besson’s “La Femme Nikita”, the original “inspired” an incredibly dull American remake, TV series and inevitably an unofficial Hong Kong take from D&b Films. It would be hard pressed to argue that they were great artists and Stephen Shin would hardly be considered a visual stylist as Luc Besson in his prime. Yet this is more than just a facsimile copy and does have merit in it’s own right.

It seems pretty odd to have survived a serious accident only to proclaim, “I cannot wait to do a superhero show,” but stranger still is the fact that that’s exactly what actor David Julian Hirsch is now doing as Richard Conrad/Blue-Bolt on Jupiter’s Legacy.
Born in Canada on October 26, 1973, Hirsch had every intention of becoming a lawyer, having studied criminology at the University of Toronto. Then he “foolishly” decided to perform in a New York summer acting workshop and found himself hooked. He made his TV acting debut in a 1998 episode of La Femme Nikita and became a series regular on such Canadian series as Leap Years, Naked Josh, Lovebites, and Hawthorne. Between 2001 and 2013 he appeared in about a dozen films. But it’s Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy that is the answer to his accident-inducing pronouncement and as you can tell from the following interview,...

Early on in “Vanquish,” Ruby Rose as Morgan Freeman’s improbable housekeeper is very awkwardly chopping some vegetable — the awkwardness providing a rare plausible moment, as Rose seems an even less likely maker-of-dinner than she does slayer-of-many-criminal-goons. If she’d kept slicing that carrot or whatever for the remaining 90 minutes here, the results would have been approximately as exciting as the high-body-count action occupying most of veteran writer-director George Gallo’s feature.
“Vanquish” isn’t bad so much as inert — nothing here is convincing, tense, kinetic, outrageous, or silly enough to give the movie even fleeting life. The script is so by-the-numbers, the performers can hardly hide their disinterest, a feeling soon to be shared by viewers lured by the promise of these stars in a violent revenge tale. Lionsgate opens it in select theaters April 16, followed by on demand and digital release four days later.

“Directing is so much more than staging scenes or moving the camera,” explains John Badham in the new edition of his last book. “It is how to make the impossible possible. It is storytelling, imagination, people managing, resource skills, physical stamina, so many things a director is called upon to be good at. Including accepting the blame for everything: the script, the performances, the camerawork etc., etc., etc. And yet, in spite of all those limitations, obstacles, and endless politics, we charge forward trying to make the very best of what we have to work with. Who else would do such a crazy thing? But how can we not?”

It took one role to get her hooked though and from that point on she was ready to do what it took to keep herself in the spotlight and make

But now, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director has revealed a new list of films to watch during self-isolation and has come up with 54 action movies that he believes are an A+.

A decade is a long time in television, and we're gathering the best programming across a bunch of fun categories.
We're starting with the best action/adventure series.

Game of Thrones - HBO (2011-2019)
Let’s get it out of the way. Games of Thrones had a rocky ending. That doesn’t take away from the seven incredible seasons that came before it, though. Game of Thrones is one of the defining shows of the decade.
Having such a large ensemble cast is no easy task, but Game of Thrones managed to get us invested in each player in the war for the Iron Throne. The show had something for everyone: action, adventure, romance, and dragons.

A female-fronted John Wick spinoff film titled “Ballerina” is in the works at Lionsgate, with Len Wiseman set to direct the film, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap
“Ballerina” follows a female assassin and will be developed as an extension to the John Wick universe. Shay Hatten, who wrote “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” also wrote the spec script that was acquired by Lionsgate in 2017 that was described as in the same vein of Luc Besson’s “La Femme Nikita.”
“Ballerina” will be produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski, and “John Wick” star Keanu Reeves will executive produce. James Myers is overseeing for Lionsgate.

Updated with EuropaCorp statement: Luc Besson’s embattled EuropaCorp has responded to a report in French weekly, Le Journal du Dimanche, which said on Sunday the studio was entering a deal that would see NY-based Vine Alternative Investments come to its rescue. In a statement provided to Deadline, Europa confirmed discussions “with several financial partners including the group Vine, as part of the restructuring of its debt and the strengthening of its financial capacity.”
Vine, Europa said, “has expressed interest in a potential stake in the capital of the company” and talks are ongoing. As of March 31, EuropaCorp’s net debt stood at $181M. In May, the company was granted a six-month debt waiver to give it time to balance the books. Vine would be expected to convert Europa’s debt into capital shares.
A rescue deal between Europa and Vine was reportedly hatched on July 3 in the office of the French judicial administrator.

One of the most expected productions of 2017, “The Villainess” by Jeong Byung-gil, director of “Confession of Murder”, had all the prerequisites of becoming one of the best action films of all time. Let us see if it succeeded.
“The Villainess” screened at Fantasia International Film Festival
The movie starts with an extremely impressive action scene, where we watch an unknown assailant attacking swarms of enemies in a building, butchering, maiming, breaking, kicking and punching everyone who enters the scene, in a style identical to the first-person shooters in video games. After a while, the camera is pushed back and the character is revealed to be a woman, while the video game aesthetics remain, as a third-person action this time. After the ending of this scene, and a disorienting cut including a flashback, we watch the main heroine escaping a room she was secluded in, and some seemingly surrealist scenes occur,...

Jean Reno in the thriller Cold Blood. Photo credit: Screen Media
French action star Jean Reno re-teams with Thierry Arbogast, the cinematographer on La Femme Nikita and,The Fifth Element, for action thriller Cold Blood. In this English-language French-Ukrainian film, Jean Reno plays a legendary hit man, the kind of role he has played well many times. With the help of cinematographer Arbogast, stunning locations, and a good supporting cast, they do their best to add style and suspense to this action thriller. Unfortunately, it is not enough to overcome the messy, nonsensical script.
Reno plays a retired hit man living in a remote cabin in Washington State when a young woman (Sara Lind), who has been injured in a snowmobile accident, suddenly turns up nearly on his doorstep. This begins a twisty tale built around the assassination of a mysterious billionaire, a tale of secrets, power, and money, with...

We’ve had “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” and “Fortinbras Gets Drunk,” and now there’s “Ophelia,” an intelligent and gorgeous spin on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” from the point of view of the melancholy prince’s beloved.
“Hamlet” of course has its share of memorable characters — recall the bit player who claimed that the play was about a grave digger who meets a prince — but this provocative adaptation of Lisa Klein’s novel gives an oft-maligned character purpose and agency. It is not betrayal and madness that bewitches this Ophelia but toxic masculinity.
Director Claire McCarthy (“The Waiting City”) and adapter Semi Chellas (“Mad Men”) give us an Elsinore Castle and its court that’s as handsomely mounted as any number of straightforward Shakespearean adaptations, but they cleverly tweak the proceedings to make us reexamine key moments from an entirely different angle.

“Anna,” the new thriller about a supermodel who’s also a Russian assassin, is a film with many, many wigs. Long wigs, short wigs, red wigs, silver wigs. The film’s star, Sasha Luss, wears so many wigs throughout this movie that you may very well delight in counting them all. It’s probably the most entertainment you’ll get out of this flimsy “La Femme Nikita” knockoff.
Writer-director Luc Besson, who also wrote and directed “La Femme Nikita” almost 30 years ago, once again tells the story of a troubled young woman, addicted to drugs and incredibly violent, who gets pulled into the world of espionage after a robbery gone wrong, by an agent with whom she forms a romantic attraction. Once again, her first assignment is a dangerous hit that takes place in a crowded restaurant, which goes completely awry on purpose, and once again, she discovers that the...

A vacuous performance from model Sasha Luss sinks the director’s attempt to add a modern spin on his 1990 thriller La Femme Nikita
Who or what is Anna? Answers include a reminder of director Luc Besson’s action movie credentials, an attempt to start a female-fronted assassin franchise and a showcase for the acting talents of model Sasha Luss. Or at least that’s what could be said of the film, sight unseen. Because in actuality, the delayed, and rather dumped thriller (distributor Lionsgate refused to screen the film for press) is an unqualified failure on all three counts, a wide-releasing multiplex dweller that instead works best as an undemanding late-night TV watch, exactly where it should have been offloaded in the first place.

All you need for a movie, Jean-Luc Godard famously declared, is a gun and a girl. His fellow French filmmaker Luc Besson has taken the maxim to heart, albeit with a few upgrades. You could also throw in a knife or two, for example. If the “girl” — a grown woman, really — happens to be adept at a close-combat fighting style and can use a white fur coat straight outta Doctor Zhivago to tangle up opponents while she kicks the crap out of them, that’d be a nice bonus. Some impromptu weapons,...

Luc Besson’s “Anna” wrapped photography in December 2017. Less than three months later, Fox released “Red Sparrow,” an extra-icy Cold War thriller about a Russian ballerina (played by Jennifer Lawrence) recruited by Soviet foreign intelligence to become an assassin and spy, trained to use her sex appeal as a weapon while leveraging her intelligence to outwit her handlers.
The day “Red Sparrow” opened must have been a very bad one for Besson, since that movie is basically the smarter, more sophisticated version of the story he’d imagined for “Anna,” which stars model-turned-actress Sasha Luss as a Russian assassin turned model who dispatches Kgb targets between fashion shoots. You get the picture. Except that even “Red Sparrow” was a rehash of sorts.
A year earlier, Charlize Theron had appeared in “Atomic Blonde,” an intense triple-crossing, Iron Curtain action movie, which gave the Oscar-winning glamour queen the opportunity to demonstrate that...

Luc Besson’s lifelong obsession with female empowerment has always been hard to square with his lifelong hobby of female objectification. The stylish French auteur and film mogul responsible for the likes of “Lucy,” “The Professional,” and at least nine alleged instances of sexual impropriety loves to build movies around blank women — usually fashion models — who can be reformatted with the power of his own design and costumed with the scant agency he’s afforded them.
In “Anna,” a competent spy thriller that would feel anonymous if not for its slinky bodies and recognizable psychosexual undercurrents, Besson’s signature tendency is expressed with the same literalness that it was in “The Fifth Element” and “La Femme Nikita.” Why start being subtle about it now? Caught in a tug-of-war between the CIA and the Kgb, the heroine this time around — a lithe Russian model named Anna who’s played by a...

You have to respect the likes of High Octane Pictures and Wild Eye Releasing, the amount of truly independent genre films they put out in the Us is astounding. Of course many filmmakers can go down the self-releasing route and debut their films on streaming services etc. but there’s nothing like getting a physical release – and that’s where High Octane and co. come in, seemingly picking up titles no one else will and there’s some real gems hidden in their output, as long as you can look past the low budgets!
But when you’re dealing with so many independent films and so many low budget films there’s bound to be some stinkers; and unfortunately Impossible Mission is one such movie.

Luc Besson, the French filmmaker whose credits include The Professional, The Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita, has been accused of sexual misconduct by nine women. Four women had previously accused him of misbehavior, and five more recently came forward, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The claims range from inappropriate behavior to sexual assault.
One of the women who came forward with new allegations, reported by the French publication Mediapart, claimed that she was one of Besson’s former assistants and that he “blackmailed” her into a sexual relationship. She wished to remain anonymous.

Luc Besson has been accused of rape by a young actress who has worked with the French filmmaker twice. The news, first reported by Europe 1 and since confirmed by Variety, comes at the height of the #MeToo movement and just moments after Asia Argento took the stage at Cannes to say that within the film community “there are those who still have to be held accountable for their conduct against women for behavior that does not belong in this industry.”
The actress, who has asked not to be identified, describes the alleged incident as a “violent sexual assault” that took place on Thursday, May 10 after a meeting with Besson at the Bristol Hotel in Paris. Via his attorney, Besson has “categorically denied all the accusations made against him.”

Last April, when Daniel Craig confirmed that he would be returning for one final onslaught of Heineken commercials (and making another James Bond movie to support them), news of who would be helming the currently untitled 25th installment of the spy super-franchise seemed imminent. And yet, almost a year later, the director’s chair is still empty. With November 2019 just around the corner, it goes without saying that each tick of 007’s Omega Seamster 300 watch is starting to grow a little bit louder.

There’s a bit of the diabolical bent to the film La Femme Nikita. She starts off as a drug addict and juvenile delinquent that is accused of killing a cop in cold blood during a robbery attempt. After this she’s arrested and then sentenced to life in prison as well as slated for execution by lethal injection in the American version of the film. While she is drugged her death is faked. She’s then recruited by a secret government organization that takes her and trains her to become a cold, emotionless killer that can’t be traced. It’s a thrill ride

It’s time to see La Femme Nikita make a return to the screen whether it’s a series or a movie, and it’s largely because women in films are starting to make a big push for equality and empowerment. The whole premise of La Femme Nikita centers around a young woman that was taken by the government and turned into an expert killing machine that knows little if any real remorse and is bound to do what she’s told. Of course that’s the plan, the truth is that Nikita does manage to hold onto her humanity and doesn’t go completely cold-blooded
