Even in a generally well-liked horror franchise like Slumber Party Massacre, there is still that one entry that fans do not rally around as much as others. And among the four films produced so far, Sally Mattison’s Slumber Party Massacre III is routinely slept on. However, this series’ third depiction of a sleepover gone terribly awry not only brings back the harshness of the original film, it also delivers an unusual perspective.
The first slasher trend had all but ended by 1990, but unseasonableness has never stopped a producer like Roger Corman. And as with the previous Slumber Party Massacre films, the third was directed and written by women, including a script by the late Catherine Cyran. This rushed, micro-budget film works from the same familiar prompt; a male assailant stalks and kills hapless, scantily clad women as they gather for what should have been a night of fun and play.

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.
After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

Nearly three years after releasing the original Slumber Party Massacre as a special edition Blu-ray, Scream Factory has finally put a double feature disc of its two sequels: 1987’s Slumber Party Massacre II and 1990’s Slumber Party Massacre III. It’s something of a good news/bad news situation.
The good news is that Slumber Party Massacre II is really crazy and really fun. The bad news is that part 3 is not. Picking up the subversive campiness of where Amy Holden Jones’ original left off, Slumber Party Massacre II writer/director Deborah Brock dials up the weirdness and adds an abstract, hallucinatory bent to the first sequel. It’s bigger and stranger, more colorful and experimental; I’m reminded of the leap from Prom Night to Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, except that the original Slumber Party Massacre is a better movie than Prom Night.
Crystal Bernard (TV’s Wings) plays Courtney,...

Be ready when Mother Nature calls! That’s what the premise is behind one of the pitches on Shark Tank tonight. The creators of Illumibowl hope that even the Sharks can relate to using the toilet in the dark. The pitch goes something like this: Each night, millions of people wake to the call of nature and they stumble out of bed into the bathroom and they are faced with a terrible choice: turn on the light and risk waking themselves up or go it alone in the dark. Doesn’t sound like either option is appealing. So what does one do?

Glenn has been attending the 25th Stockholm Film Festival as a member of the Fipresci jury. Here he is to discuss Turkey’s 2014 Oscar submission, Winter Sleep.
There’s a moment over an hour into Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Winter Sleep where two of the main characters finally strip away the societal niceties that their relatively comfortable existences requires of them and they reveal their true feelings about one another. Some might suggest that the scene, fraught with simmering tension and explosive drama, comes too late in the picture – it effectively kicks off the second act – and that Ceylan’s film could have easily had 20 or 30 minutes shaved from its runtime. I wouldn’t argue that these people are wrong; at 196 minutes, Winter Sleep is the one percent of film lengths of 2014 (only Lav Diaz’s Norte is a longer new release if I am remembering correctly). Still, I found...

Pink Floyd is dropping their first new album in 20 years this fall. "The Endless River" will by out via Columbia on Nov. 10, and is a whopping 18 songs long. The evolution of the album, according to a release, started with the 1993 "Division Bell" recording sessions, with David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason. It's described as a "four-sided instrumental album" plus one song with lyrics, "Louder Than Words,” words written by Gilmour's wife, novelist Polly Samson. Keyboardist Wright died in 2008, and the finishing of this album was "a tribute" to him, according to Gilmour and Mason. Wrote Gilmour: "'The Endless River' has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we've added new parts, re-recorded others and...

VHS collectors seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately. What many thought was a dead format seems to be making a major resurgence, similar to the way vinyl did. But I quite like fighting my mom still — and she keeps offering me more and more money. I'm just going to see how high I can take it." That is breakout U.K. soul singer Jessie Ware talking to Pitchfork on the subject of her nose ring; we mention it here because it is charming, and also because the nose ring is once again on display in the video for "Night Light," off her debut album Devotion. Also featured: human-sized sock puppets, waterless synchronized swimming, curtain dancing, mesh cloche hats, and general coolness. Actually, Jessie Ware is cool enough at this point that she could probably accept the thousand quid from her...

Jessie Ware has debuted her new music video online. The singer will release 'Night Light' as the fourth official single from her debut album Devotion, which was released last month. The accompanying music video sees the star entwined in hanging material as well as being shrouded in clouds of smoke. Jessie Ware has confirmed the title of her new single to Digital Spy. The singer will release 'Night Light' on October 22 as the latest track from her debut album Devotion. Discussing the song at the launch of MTV Brand New 2013, she told Digital Spy: "It was a toss-up between 'Wildest Moments' and 'Night Light' of which one we'd release first. I think it will work well for the autumn. "I feel like it's a sassy ballad and I thought I could throw a few diva moves in it. We just shot the video and I think it'll look fantastic." The star, who previously featured on tracks by Sampha and Sbtrkt, insisted that she wants to "keep on doing (more)...

We recently chatted with Saturday Night Light alum Chris Parnell, who now lends his voice to Cyril Figgus in FX’s Archer.
His calm, cool and collected persona fits Cyril’s character perfectly and is quite the antithesis of the boisterish character of Sterling Archer (played by the endlessly funny H. Jon Benjamin).
We chatted about Archer and Parnell gives his thoughts on how the cast is able to gel so well, especially considering that they all record their lines separately. He also shares some thoughts on the imminent end of NBC’s 30 Rock, where he guests as Dr. Leo Spaceman.
Archer’s fourth season doesn’t premiere until January, but check out some interviews we have with Parnell’s costars Benjamin and Aisha Tyler as well as a rundown of the Archer panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

2011 has been a brilliant year for music. There’s been so many good, and varied, releases that it’s been hard to wittle down a top ten of what we think were the best releases of the year. Eventually, we managed to settle on our choices and the list is as diverse as it is strong. If you haven’t heard any on the list, then listen to them the first opportunity you get. You won’t regret it.
We’ve already had one top ten albums of the year list from our writer Adam Lock. This is our second list made up of picks by WhatCulture!’s senior music writers Rhys Milsom and Morgan Roberts.

Back in June it was first rumored Universal was looking to re-write and rework Michael Tabb's would-be sequel to the failed 2010 effort The Wolfman starring Benicio del Toro and directed by Joe Johnston into a new werewolf franchise. A month later, Moviehole reported Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, The Hitcher: I've Been Waiting and Carnosaur 2 helmer Louis Morneau would direct for a fall shoot. Now, it has become a reality as Universal announced the start of production on what they describe as an "all-new supernatural Untitled Werewolf Thriller" with Morneau directing. Filming will take place in and around Bucharest, Romania and the film won't be heading to theaters as the studio confirms it will be part of their DVD Originals line alongside such titles as The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior and the upcoming January release of [amazon asin="B005TK0WG8" text="The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption"] starring Ron Perlman and Billy Zane. Once again, it's time for more various oddball trailers from the far reaches of cinema obscurity. So, without any further ado, let's check out some "coming attractions"! This week with an all "Girls" theme!
Gas Pump Girls (1979)
The late 70's was the last great hoo-rah for sleazy sexploitation films made specifically for the drive-in theater before cable TV and home video took over as the preferred (and more convenient) method for those looking for mindless T&A to take in a flick.
One such late 70's drive-in sex comedy was Gas Pump Girls directed by Joel Bender.
The film centers around June (Kristen Baker from Friday the 13th Part 2 and Midnight Madness), a ridiculously sexy young girl who takes over a gas station formerly run by her uncle. As you'd expect, business isn't exactly booming, but when June and her equally sexy friends (notably Sandy Johnson from Halloween and H.

Director Katt Shea (Poision Ivy, Stripped to Kill 1 & 2, The Rage: Carrie II) is remaking her own 1989 vampire movie Dance of the Damned. I've never seen the original, but based on the trailer (watch below), it looks like a great Skinemax flick starring Cyril O'Reilly sporting the ultimate vampire mullet. It also stars Starr Andreeff (Syngenor) and Maria Ford (The Haunting of Morella, Slumber Party Massacre III). In the original O'Reilly plays a vampire who seduces a stripper who is contemplating suicide. The VHS is going for $16 on Amazon, or you can watch it on YouTube for free.

While there was no shortage of successful horror films in 1999 (Sleepy Hollow, The Sixth Sense, The Blair Witch Project, Stigmata), teen-based films were on the wane. 1998 represented the financial peak of this subgenre, with only two miserable offerings crawling into theaters the following year. Neither Idle Hands nor The Rage: Carrie 2 managed to scare up much business, indicating that target audiences might’ve had their fill of teen-specific horror and were now looking elsewhere for their shocks. The horror landscape was shifting rapidly and it was in this transition period that Dimension Films sought to deliver what was then being touted as the final installment in their hugely profitable Scream franchise.

The Flicks:
Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
In the glorious ’80s the slasher killers were the kings of the silver screen. Buxom young starlets were getting hacked up by the dozens. Usually the flicks were helmed by men, but The Slumber Party Massacre trilogy was led by three talented ladies with very different styles, and each of them brought something unique to the horror genre.
Amy Jones directed the The Slumber Party Massacre, which held its own agains other films in this popular genre. Looking back at this classic horror flick put a smile on my face, and made me realize why I loved the ’80s so much. Jones created an atmospheric thriller that follows many of the staples of its predecessors (Halloween, Friday the 13th), but made the villain a psychopathic driller killer with a penchant for nubile young ladies.

The Saturday Night Live skit November 20, 2010 was iconic. They began with music and scenes that were similar to those late night commercials for phone - a - date party lines and talk about the Tsa security staff being willing to touch you in your private areas. They ask if passengers are feeling lonely this holiday season, and joke that the Tsa airport security will give you that something special you have been looking for; they parody the full body scan, random selection of passengers for full body search, and the likelihood that you will get a Tsa pat down agent who is less than professional or unpleasant at best. Young Kenan Thompson was the SNL Tsa skit cast member who pulled off the funniest role. While the girls from SNL spoke in sexy voices, the former Nickelodeon star turned late night TV comedy pro played the role of the gruffest of Tsa security officials,...

Fuquay-varina - It was a speedy two days with major stars dropping into my neighborhood.
On a Thursday night the man who made predicted FedEx arrived at a Durham library. Mister McFeely (David Newell) still fits in his Speedy Delivery uniform and hat as he greeted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood fans of all ages. Most of the ages were under seven. Luckily I had brought along a little kid in order not to stick out.
McFeely was at the end of a weeklong tour around the state to touch base with the kids. Lately whenever any star of kid focused tv shows comes to town, it’s part of some over inflated media spectacular stage show at the sports arena. There’s singing, dancing, indoor fireworks and motorcycle stunts meant to dazzle a three year old. Plus there’s a $18 convenience charge on the tickets. But this was not McFeely’s type of entertainment.

Next Tuesday Shout! Factory unleashes yet another winning package that we never thought we'd see. That's right, kids. The Slumber Party Massacre collection is heading our way, and we have a look at it for you!
From the Press Release:
Stay up all night with the films that put a new twist on the slasher genre. Along with Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980) and Prom Night (1980), Slumber Party Massacre (1982) helped define the slasher film ethos of the 1980s. Put together by first-time director Amy Holden from a script, titled “Don’t Open the Door," by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle), the film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels.
Here, for the first time, all three Slumber Party Massacres are brought together in one DVD set, due to drill its way into your heart on October 5, 2010 from Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation.

Skip Schoolnik is the director behind the 80's slasher Hide and Go Shriek. Hide and Go Shriek is one of those films that featured some up and coming talent along with some actors that dropped off the face of the earth. The cast included Bunky Jones, Brittain Frye (Slumber Party Massacre III), Sean Kanan (The Karate Kid Part III), Ria Pavia (Candyman), Annette Sinclair, Donna Baltron (Shallow Grave 1987), Scott Fults, and George Thomas. Hide and Go Shriek deals with a group of teenagers who sneak into a furniture store to have an after hours graduation party unaware that a killer has followed them and is picking people off one by one as they play a game of hide and seek. Here is what Skip had to say about making his first film, Hide and Go Shriek.
So who is Skip Schoolnik and what are you all about?
I'm all about doing great work.

The Slumber Party Massacre films, all three directed by women, will now finally be available on re-release with killer bonus features. You can also get a cool Spm pillow case, too!
Don’t Open the Door was a script written by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (she wrote Rubyfruit Jungle, which appears in Tish's bedroom in the first film) as a response to the recent slasher films that created modern slasher stereotypes like Halloween (1978), and parodied the obvious cliches by setting a slumber party in the path of a deranged lunatic killer wielding a phallic electric drill. Roger Corman, who gave many women horror directors their first shot, allowed first-time director Amy Holden to have a go at it. The film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels that were subsequently more ridiculous. It also spawned the career of actress Brinke Stevens,...

Micahel Hoffman is an up and coming director in the horror genre. After catching Spring Break Massacre and Rot: Reunion of Terror he has shown that his films can be very pointed and focused. He is a director that has the potential to have a clear point of view in the genre and his own distinctive voice all while under the age of 30, which hopefully he won't stray away from. As us genre fans know, some directors go there entire career (Steve Miner anyone?) without finding their point of view or voice. Between the films, even though they are stand alone films with different storylines and aren't connected in any way between each other, there is a cohesion of style and themes and feel unqiuely like the work of Michael Hoffman. So kudos to this up and coming talent!
