Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

Presented by Kc Ventures and produced by Studio Finecut (Christmas Carol), the film is currently in post-production. Finecut will present first-look images at EFM.
The pic follows a woman with a hearing aid haunted by inexplicable sounds linked to her sister’s disappearance and attracting a malevolent presence. The synopsis reads: As the story unravels, a bone-chilling secret and mystery entity are revealed after the unnerving noises. The film delves into the unsettling issue of floor noise, a prevalent concern in contemporary societies.
Noise marks the feature debut of director Kim Soo-jin, whose short film The Line played the Cinefondation Selection at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. Lee Sun-bin takes on the role of a woman with a hearing aid searching for her missing sister. Kim Min-seok takes on the role of the missing sister’s boyfriend. The downstairs neighbor is portrayed by Rye Kyung-soo, known for The Bequeathed.
Recent Finecut sales titles include the drama Victory, directed by Park Beom-su (Red Carpet) and produced by Anna Lee’s Annapurna Films with backing from Mindmark. Set on a remote island, the film revolves around two girls who form a cheerleading club and start supporting the local under-achieving soccer team.
The cast was headed by Lee Hye-ri, a member of K-pop group Girl’s Day, and Park Se-wan (Life Is Beautiful), along with rising actor Lee Jeong-ha (Moving).

These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

The ’70s shocked you, the ’80s gored you . . . now the ’90s come in for the kill!
The Criterion Channel has announced this year’s Halloween spectacular, which “celebrates an era that saw terror undergo unsettling new transformations.”
The team previews, “In the ’90s, horror movies got bigger budgets, became playfully self-aware, and even won some Oscars—but they’re just as nasty as what came before.
“Featuring cult heroes like John Carpenter (In the Mouth of Madness) and Abel Ferrara (The Addiction) plunging the dark depths of their uncompromising visions, established auteurs like Francis Ford Coppola (Bram Stoker’s Dracula) taking on the genre, and new voices like Ernest R. Dickerson (Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight) and Antonia Bird (Ravenous) offering fresh perspectives on familiar tropes, this selection curated by Clyde Folley offers a hair-raising tour through an oft-overlooked decade in horror that’s ripe for rediscovery.”

The South Korean box office got a new chart topper with mystery drama “Sleep,” but the weekend was a sleepy affair.
“Sleep” earned $2.97 million over the weekend, according to Friday to Sunday data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over its full opening five days, it grossed $3.97 million.
The film, which had its world premiere in Cannes in May, is the tale of a newly-married couple whose relationship is challenged by the man’s nightly disturbances, in which he claims that someone else is inside him. “Sleep” is directed by Jason Yu and produced by Lewis Kim at Lewis Pictures.
The top-ranked new release meant that “Oppenheimer” slipped to second place after three weeks on top. “Oppenheimer” earned $1.09 million to expand its cumulative total in Korea to $24.0 million. That is now the tenth highest score of 2023.

“Oppenheimer” remained the top performing film in South Korea for the third successive weekend. It earned $2.04 million for a 19-day cumulative total of $22.4 million.
The row of wins for “Oppenheimer” demonstrates again Korean audiences appreciation of top acting skills. But it also exposes the weakened selection of competing titles in the Korean market.
The top-ranked new release title was the drama thriller “Don’t Buy the Seller,” which landed in second position, according to weekend data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). It scored just $1.27 million over the weekend and $1.87 million over its opening five days.
That weakness pulled the nationwide cinema box office aggregate below trend and below $10 million for the second successive weekend. Takings across all cinemas between Friday and Sunday were just $7.21 million, down from $9.95 million a week earlier.
Previously, Korean cinemas had enjoyed weekend gross revenues of more than $10 million for the 16 weeks,...

Hey all! John Fallon here aka The Arrow. Our docu-series, Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian: 80’s Horror Memories (binge it here), which thoroughly explores the decade in horror, is now 15 episodes in. We just wrapped 1980, 1981 and 1982 and we are about to go in balls deep into 1983 this coming Monday, August 28 on our JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel.
A series of this ilk doesn’t happen by itself, it takes an army of producers, writers, editors and our sole narrator to make the magic happens. So we thought it would be dandy to get our core staff to share with you their 10 favorite (not best) horror movies from the 80’s. Yes, it was tough on all of us to pick just 10 – but we knocked a few back and did what we could. Scroll down and peep our choices!

We have a relatively quiet week of home media releases ahead of us this week, but the titles that are coming out are a rad bunch of films nonetheless. Scream Factory is doing the Dark Lord’s work with both the Collector’s Edition of April Fool’s Day and the HD release of Frankenstein: The True Story. If you missed it in theaters back in January, Nicolas Pesce’s The Grudge (2020) is headed to various platforms this Tuesday, and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition release of Philip Ridley’s The Passion of Darkly Noon as well.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 24th include Endless Night, Cabal, Hunter’s Moon, The Zombinator, and The Wizard: Collector’s Edition.

In the opening shot of Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation” (2003), Scarlett Johansson is lying on a bed, back to the camera, shown in partial view, wearing underpants. In Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner 2049” (2017) a banged-up Ryan Gosling stares up at a bone-thin, enormous nude projection of a woman. More recently, Jay Roach’s “Bombshell” (2019) featured Margot Robbie lifting her dress for John Lithgow as the camera takes in her legs.

The early 1990s was still the 1980s, really. Not just in terms of music, but clothes and films, too. Bombastic touches in special effects as well as in storytelling often went along with pleated pants, stonewashed jeans, shoulder pads, and other questionable wardrobe items. The point is, if you like crazy '80s films, there were plenty to be found in the early '90s, such as the Eric Red (Bad Moon) film, Body Parts. Starring Jeff Fahey, Body Parts is the story of Bill, an even-keeled criminal psychologist who badly wants to "just heal someone." Not long after speaking to an off-kilter criminal on death row, Bill is involved in a horrific accident on the freeway in which he loses his right arm....

Uma Thurman will headline Chambers, a supernatural-ish Netflix television drama.
Uma Thurman is headlining Chambers, a Netflix TV series that will manifest as a 10-episode hourlong offering with supernatural themes.
Netflix gave the project a straight-to-series order back in January 2018. It is the creation of writer Leah Rachel, an actress who's been juggling creative duties, having written for the 2012 TV series, Audrey, and directed a few short films. Rachel will serve as co-showrunner with Akela Cooper, who wields more experience in that department, having written and produced shows such as Luke Cage, American Horror Story, The 100 and Grimm.
Chambers will depict the story of a young heart attack survivor whose life was saved by a heart transplant. However, she starts to raise crucial questions about her new heart, eventually learning the terrible truth about the donor’s death. Eventually, things take a supernatural turn for the...

The Horror Equity Fund have announced the latest horror-related project they have fast-tracked: White Knuckle, from one of my favourite writer/directors Eric Red, who is also the author of the action-packed novel of the same name. White Knuckle tells a gripping story of female empowerment about a woman who survives an attack by a serial killer, and then takes it upon herself to stop him from hurting anyone else.

Before he was People’s Sexiest Man Alive, country star Blake Shelton rocked one of fashion’s biggest accessorizes: the mullet. And now that he’s got the coveted title, he’s looking to bring it back.

“When I think of sexy, I think of my heros and Billy Ray Cyrus was one of them,” he continued. “With this new power that has been bestowed on me,...

“Catfight” is a great example of truth in advertising: In writer-director Onur Tukel’s nutty satire, Anne Heche and Sandra Oh beat the shit out of each other. That much should be obvious from a passing familiarity with the premise, but it’s less the plot of the movie than its motif. Heche and Oh don’t just beat the shit out of each other; they do it on three separate occasions, for minutes on end, and each blow lands with an alarming crunch.
Although the filmmaking has a ragged quality that doesn’t always hit its mark, the two brawling women certainly do. No matter its flaws, Tukel’s witty inversion of the buddy movie formula — set in an embellished world riddled by wartime dysfunction — has some legitimate ideas about the way feuds can last so long that neither side remembers what they’re fighting over. Imagine “Trading Places...

Scream Factory has released Bad Moon to Blu-ray, and they’ve included both the theatrical cut, as well as the rarer director’s cut. I don’t want to oversell it, this isn’t Nightbreed, the director’s cut of Bad Moon actually clocks in at a few seconds less than the theatrical. That I can tell, the only difference throughout the entire film is that transformation scene, which really makes little difference. I know several people who consider this to be one of their favorite horror films, but other than that, it’s rarely one I see mentioned. The werewolf genre is criminally unappreciated in the first place, and a lot of the really good ones are just obscure enough that they never really capture the attention of the mainstream. Bad Moon is a solid werewolf movies. And Scream Factory has released the most complete version to date.

Given some distance and the perspective of time, almost every horror film seems to look better and find its audience. Though the early to mid 1990s have long been considered a particularly bad period for American horror movies, recent years have seen a number of titles being reassessed and opinions on them revised to be much more favorable than they were 20 years ago. Titles like Disturbing Behavior and I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Rage: Carrie 2, largely written off by horror fans during their theatrical releases in the ’90s, are now being talked about as secretly good genre efforts not because the movies have actually improved, but because enough time has passed that the films can be removed from their historical context and taken for what they are.
Of course, some ’90s titles were always secretly good; they only needed some time to find their audience.

July 19th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include The Return Of The Living Dead Collector’s Edition, Bad Moon
Tuesday, July 19th doesn’t boast a ton of new home entertainment choices for genre fans, but as the saying goes, sometimes it’s quality over quantity, and there are a few releases to be more than excited for. Scream Factory has put together a stellar Collector’s Edition release of The Return of the Living Dead and is also bringing Bad Moon home in HD as well.
Mill Creek has two William Castle double features arriving on Blu-ray this week, and Warner Home Video is giving Watchmen the 4K Ultra HD treatment with their new release of The Ultimate Cut, which I know a lot of fans have been looking forward to for a while now.
Other notable titles coming home on July 19th include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (with four separate format releases) and a special edition release of Ken Russell’s Crimes of Passion.

I’ve never picked up a hitchhiker. Not once even thought of doing it. The idea of having a complete stranger ride beside me, not knowing who they are or what they are capable of doing (or already done), terrifies me. This basic fear (and others) is at the heart of Robert Harmon’s The Hitcher (1986), a surrealistic cat and mouse game played out on the lonesome highways of Texas.
Produced by HBO Pictures and Silver Screen Partners and released by TriStar Pictures, The Hitcher was not a success at the box office, costing $6 million Us and barely eking that out in returns. Reviews were mixed, everything from worthless trash to artful exploitation. The truth is somewhere in between – while the film has the veneer of Michael Mann, it plays as a discombobulated Michael Myers. Special Mention: Werckmeister Harmonies
Directed by Bela Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky
Written by László Krasznahorkai and Bela Tarr
2000, Hungary / Italy / Germany
Genre: Emotional Horror
Bela Tarr is a filmmaker whose work is a highly acquired taste, but as a metaphysical horror story, Werckmeister Harmonies is an utter masterpiece that should appeal to most cinephiles. The film title refers to the 17th-century German organist-composer Andreas Werckmeister, esteemed for his influential structure and harmony of music. Harmonies is strung together like a magnificent symphony working on the viewer’s emotions over long stretches of time even when the viewer is unaware of what’s going on. Attempting to make sense of Tarr’s movies in strict narrative terms is not the best way to go about watching his films; but regardless if you come away understanding Harmonies or not, you won’t soon forget the film. Given how frequently Kurt Sutter’s last FX series, biker-gang drama Sons of Anarchy, showcased a near-medieval penchant for savage bloodletting, perhaps it shouldn’t be too surprising to see that the creator has flourished in the grimy, grisly 14th-century setting of The Bastard Executioner. Replete with torture chambers, sadistic lords, noble warriors, beheadings galore and miles of entrails, the Middle Ages feel like Sutter’s kind of sandbox.
The Bastard Executioner also feels immediately like the kind of story you’d expect Sutter to tell – a brutishly violent, narratively brusque tale of vengeance, populated by chiseled men of honor, cowardly snakes in the grass, oddball necromancers and a hideously scarred individual known only as the Dark Mute (and played by the showrunner himself, natch).
