Upon realizing that Europa did not win the Palme d'Or at the 44th Cannes Film Festival, Lars von Trier gave the judges the finger and stormed out the venue.
Steven Spielberg is a fan of the film. Upon seeing it, he offered Lars Von Trier the chance to work in Hollywood, to which Von Trier politely declined. Von Trier has worked solely in Denmark ever since, and has never been to the United States.
The final film in Lars von Trier's 'Europa' trilogy which illuminates the traumas of Europe in the future. The two other parts are The Element of Crime (1984) and Epidemic (1987).
