The alternative music scene is having a great 2024. This year has given us a great array of albums in the genre, including the return of many iconic artists from the past 15 years. With that said, all eyes so far are on what seems to be a three-way race for the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy, which is led by three previous winners looking to repeat.
The first of the three is Brittany Howard, who is sure to be nominated for her sophomore solo project, “What Now.” She previously swept the alternative and rock categories with her band Alabama Shakes back in 2016. Her debut solo album, “Jaime,” was also a success at the Grammys, earning five nominations including a win for Best Rock Song (“Stay High”). Howard was surely next in line that year for Best Alternative Album, which went to Fiona Apple (“Fetch the Bolt Cutters“), whom Howard beat for Rock Song,...

Adria Arjona and Glen Powell may have some very steamy scenes in “Hit Man,” but filming them was anything but sexy.
It all went wrong when they were shooting in a bathtub and someone added Dawn dish washing soap to the water. “That strips you of all your oils of your skin,” Arjona says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “That’s used for baby ducks when there’s an oil spill for God’s sake. We soaked in this bathtub for an hour and I get out of the tub and all of a sudden I dry myself and I can’t bend my knees because I have no oils.”
She was not only in pain, but she and Powell ended up covered in nasty rashes. But the show had to go on. “That was the day that we filmed all of our sex...

Being one of the main stars of the 1980’s, famous for her romantic flicks The Blue Lagoon (1980) and Endless Love (1981), Brooke Shields has recently been celebrated by the audience again, as her romcom is now #1 in Netflix’s Global Chart. Even though it’s panned by critics, it can be a perfect guilty pleasure movie for an evening chill.
Its plot centers on Shields’ Lana, whose daughter surprises her with an unexpected news: she’s getting married. The thing is that the wedding is scheduled not only in a month, but at a resort in Phuket, Thailand. However, it’s not the end of Lana’s shock.
After arriving there for the ceremony, she meets her daughter’s groom and his father, who is none other than Lana’s ex who broke her heart long ago. Together they’ll need to organize the wedding and not destroy the children’s relationship with their past.

On paper, Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove share a lot in common. They both began their professional careers as child models who went on to find early success as actors. While Shields rose to fame in late-’70s and ’80s films (Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon, Endless Love), Cosgrove made a name for herself in the aughts on small-screen sitcoms (iCarly, Drake & Josh). As young women growing up in Hollywood, they both became cultural touchstones for their respective generations but, in turn, were forced to weather intense scrutiny under the limelight.
In that respect, it seems particularly fitting that Shields and Cosgrove would team up to play mother and daughter in Mother of the Bride, which launched Thursday on Netflix. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) and written by Robin Bernheim (The Princess Switch), the breezy new romantic comedy follows Shields’ Lana, a widowed single mother and world-renowned...

Alt-rock band Vampire Weekend has turned in iconic albums: their self-titled release, “Contra,” “Modern Vampires of the City” and “Father of the Bride.” The last two of these were especially important for the band, bringing them Grammys for Best Alternative Music Album in 2014 and 2020, respectively. On top of that, “Father of the Bride” earned the band their first nominations outside of the alternative category: Best Rock Song (“This Life”) and, most importantly, Album of the Year. Now the band is back with their fifth studio album, “Only God Was Above Us,” and with this new release, there’s potential for another big Grammy night for the band.
This new album comes four years after the success of “Father of the Bride,” which topped the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified gold in the US. While it managed an Album of the Year nomination, however, it wasn’t necessarily the band’s most beloved collection,...

What happened to women supporting women? Earlier this week Hollywood producer Carol Baum disparaged Sydney Sweeney’s acting ability and appearance, prompting the actress and fellow producer to respond.
“How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman,” a representative for Sweeney said in a statement to press. “If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms.

Sydney Sweeney is inevitably one of the biggest currently raging hotshots in Hollywood. A massive sweetheart ruling the hearts of fans worldwide, the 26-year-old beauty is already nailing it as an actress and is already in a position that many other actors her age could only dream of. Yet, among all the people singing praises for her, one Hollywood veteran still doesn’t consider her good enough.
Sydney Sweeney in Euphoria.
This veteran is none other than the renowned producer Carol Baum, who seems to hold a lot of criticism for Sweeney and her projects that everyone else seems to love. But Sweeney isn’t one to just sit back and face the harsh criticism she doesn’t deserve either, for her reps have released a statement that perfectly coincides with fans’ opinion on the matter.

Sydney Sweeney caught a stray last week when veteran Hollywood producer Carol Baum said at an event that Sweeney is “not pretty” and “can’t act” — and that her hit rom-com “Anyone but You” was “unwatchable.”
A representative for Sweeney has now fired back at Baum, saying in a statement shared with Variety: “How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman. If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character.”
Baum, a longtime Hollywood producer and executive behind films including “Dead Ringers,” “Father of the Bride” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” made the disparaging comments about Sweeney during a discussion in Pleasantville, N.Y., with New York Times film critic Janet Maslin.

Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney is a hugely in-demand actress right now, but one top producer doesn’t understand the hype. Carol Baum, who served as executive producer on films such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Father of the Bride, slammed the White Lotus actress during a discussion after a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers. According to the Daily Mail, Baum said she “didn’t get” Sweeney, who rose to fame playing Cassie Howard on HBO’s hit teen drama Euphoria and has gone on to star in films such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Voyeurs, Reality, Anyone But You, and Immaculate. “I was watching on the plane Sydney Sweeney’s movie because I wanted to watch it,” Baum continued, referring to Will Gluck’s 2024 romantic comedy Anyone But You. “I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her.” She added,...

Vampire Weekend’s recordings have frequently been characterized by a kind of tidiness, a clean fusion of Ezra Koenig’s pop songwriting smarts and the group’s instrumental economy. The band’s new album Only God Was Above Us offers something different, pivoting away from the brighter, jammier aspects of 2019’s Father of the Bride with a decided bent toward experimentation and surprising, often harsh, new textures. The results showcase a band that, nearly two decades in, is willing to issue a challenge to its fans and produce a soundtrack...

Spencer Tracy was the two-time Oscar winner starred in a variety of classics before his death in 1967, including nine films opposite fellow legend Katharine Hepburn. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Tracy pulled off the rare hat-trick of winning back-to-back Best Actor Oscars, first for his performance as a Portuguese sailor in “Captains Courageous” (1937), then for playing a dedicated priest helping wayward youths in “Boys Town” (1938). It’s a feat that would only be repeated once more in this category by Tom Hanks (“Philadelphia” in 1993 and “Forrest Gump” in 1994).
Tracy would compete seven more times in the category: “San Francisco” (1936), “Father of the Bride” (1950), “Bad Day at Black Rock” (1955), “The Old Man and the Sea” (1958), “Inherit the Wind” (1960), “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” (1967), which was recognized posthumously.

At 78 years old, Martin was the biggest comedian of all time for some, a movie star for others, and one of the old guys from Only Murders in the Building for the rest.

Steve Martin has had so many phases in his nearly 60-year career that he’s now recognizable for at least a half dozen different projects. Younger fans who primarily him from his popular Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building” might not be aware that he once starred in multiple hit family comedies, like “Father of the Bride” or “Cheaper by the Dozen.” Others who are familiar with Martin’s extensive film work might not necessary know he’s a gifted banjo player who has frequently played with singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. But anyone born in the last three decades can be forgiven for not knowing that Martin was once the biggest stand-up comedian in America. In the ’70s, he played to enormous sold-out stadium crowds and his act became so well known that it eventually embedded itself within the American consciousness. Many if not most people of a certain age...

Vampire Weekend have played around with a slightly “punky,” slightly “jammy”side project in their free time, band members Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio told the New York Times.
According to Tomson, the extra-curriculars began as a way to blow off steam during the pandemic. “The world had stopped working and a lot of what we normally do was just not being done,” Tomson recalled. “There was something about just playing with no expectation — to just play with my two very close friends without an agenda.”

Baio added, “It’s very rare for people in a band of our size to be alone together. No engineer, no tour manager, nothing like that. It felt like being at the outset of the band again. And we did that for three years and change, whenever we were all in town.”

Apple is celebrating Steve Martin’s legacy with the trailer for Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces.
The two-part documentary chronicles how Martin ended up becoming one of the biggest figures in comedy, featuring never-before-seen footage from the stand-up comedian-turned-movie star’s half-century-long career.
Steve! (martin) is split in two: “Then” and “Now.” The first part is said to follow Martin’s “early struggles and meteoric rise to revolutionize standup before walking away at 35,” while the latter part focuses on his current life, with Martin “in the golden years of his career, retracing the transformation that led to happiness in his art and personal life.”
The trailer previews both parts, featuring archival footage and TV appearances. In a snippet from one of Martin’s interviews for the project, he candidly shares how he felt about his rise to fame. “I was launched into the stratosphere. I was scared out of my mind,...

Steve Martin is a comedy legend, plain and simple. And he deserves your attention. Long before he became the star of beloved family comedies like "Parenthood" and "Father of the Bride," he was a massive stand-up comedian, selling out shows, firing off hilarious albums, and cracking up the likes of Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." He even made such big waves at "Saturday Night Live" that many people mistakenly believe he was once a full-fledged cast member. It's the kind of career open mic comics dream about. Now we're going to find out how Steve Martin made it happen.
Apple TV+ is releasing a two-part documentary from A24 and Tremolo Productions called "Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces." What's particularly interesting about this two-part approach is that it will take a look at Steve Martin's life and career from two different perspectives.

Howard Rosenman made his way to a screening of Bradley Cooper’s Maestro at the Academy a few weeks back, and admits that before he took a seat, he really wanted to not like it.
The veteran producer (Father of the Bride, Call Me by Your Name) tried to sell a project based on the life and career of Leonard Bernstein years ago but says he “didn’t have the juice” to get it off the ground. But what Rosenman does have is close personal ties to the iconic composer, a man he says dramatically changed the course of his life — and then some. Instead of hating it, Rosenman, 78, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he was so floored by Cooper’s film that he couldn’t stop crying. “It’s a masterpiece,” he says.
The quick backstory. In 1967, Rosenman, who is Jewish, was in medical school in Philadelphia. Amid a rising conflict in Israel,...

The wait for VW5 is almost over: Vampire Weekend have confirmed that their next album is “done.”
Back in June, Vampire Weekend announced a new vinyl series in which they’d be sharing exclusive live LPs along with accompanying newsletters. In that first newsletter, the band wrote that their upcoming project was “close to done.” Now, in an edition shared on Thursday (December 14th), bassist Chris Baio wrote that, “LP5 Is Done.”
Baio didn’t go into much more detail on what to expect from the record itself, but he did reflect on recently hosting the “first ever Vampire Weekend Corporate Retreat” along the coast of Southern Oregon, and it seems like the band cooked up some good ideas along the way.
“It was a dream to show my guys around a region of the country I have fallen in love with over the past few years,” Baio wrote. “We...

From award-winning writer/director Patrick Rea (I Am LIsa), They Wait In The Dark stars Sarah McGuire (The Stylist) as Amy, a mum fleeing with her son from her abusive partner Judith, encountering something even more terrifying when she seeks refuge in the old farmhouse she grew up in.
They Wait In The Dark features a superb central performances from McGuire, showing unexpected mettle as her situation spirals into hopelessness, and Laurie Catherine Winkel (Father of the Bride) is outstanding as the knife-toting, not to be messed with Judith, who, as Eye for Film says, “strides through this film like one of the great screen villains”.
As with his other genre films I Am Lisa and Enclosure, Rea is proving to be an accomplished horror stylist, eliciting terrific performances from his cast, and wringing maximum suspense from a screenplay that builds up a steady drip of dread, as the characters are plunged deeper into darkness.

We have "Only Murders in the Building" to thank for one of our favorite friendship trios in Hollywood. Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short star in the Hulu series as Mabel Mora, Charles-Haden Savage, and Oliver Putnam respectively, three strangers who team up to solve a string of murders in their Upper West Side apartment building. Ever since the show debuted in 2021, the costars have formed a real-life bond as deep as the one their characters share on screen. And now that the show has been renewed for a fourth season revolving around yet another mysterious death at the Arconia, we can expect even more fun behind-the-scenes moments to come from the dynamic trio.
Martin, 78, and Short, 73, have been pals for decades, collaborating on several memorable films through the years, including the Father of the Bride series. Gomez, 31, may have seemed an unlikely addition to the mix at first,...

[This story contains major spoilers for the Only Murders in the Building season three finale, with immediate ramifications for season four. Proceed with caution.]
Who killed Paul Rudd? That was the number one question on Only Murders in the Building all season long, as the Hulu murder mystery comedy launched viewers into its third season with the star-studded slaying of special guest star Rudd as superstar Ben Glenroy. Now, following the season finale, “Opening Night,” we have our answer, and we’re left with an even deadlier question: Who killed Jane Lynch?
Before its shocking final scene, “Opening Night” untangles the mystery of Ben Glenroy’s death. At the start of the season, everyone assumed Glenroy had died onstage during the opening night of Oliver Putnam’s (Martin Short) new play. In fact, he survived, only to plummet to his death later that evening down an elevator shaft at the Arconia. Did the same killer strike twice,...

Following its surprise 2022 Emmy win for Best Variety Series Directing, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is out of the running for the same prize this year, leaving an opportunity for “Saturday Night Live” to bounce back and achieve its 12th victory in the category. It does, however, face several formidable challengers, including “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” the host of which once starred on “The Daily Show,” which notably halted a “Saturday Night Live” success streak in 2015.
“Saturday Night Live” is the only former winner in this directing lineup, while “The Problem with Jon Stewart” stands as the only new nominee. The three other returning contenders are “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which have now amassed a collective total of 18 mentions in this category.

When you have Steve Martin and Martin Short together hosting “Saturday Night Live,” it’s kind of hard to pass up an opportunity to do a “Father of the Bride” sketch — so the long-running NBC show didn’t. But according to director Liz Patrick, that homage went through a whole lot of changes. You can watch it in the video above.
Patrick, who is nominated for her first solo Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series for her work on the duo-hosted episode, took over directing duties from Don Roy King for Season 48, after previously working alongside him on the show.
And though Patrick admits she was “a little” nervous about working with some of her personal comedy heroes for the episode, she was excited more than anything else. The real hurdle came in the technical execution of it.

It’s no mystery why Only Murders in the Building is killing it on Hulu. Besides the national obsession with true crime, there is a chemical reaction to the players which triggers a chaotic element unknown in forensics. Selina Gomez’s (occasionally “Bloody”) Mabel Mora ties up the loose ends. You might say she Martinizes them. It is harder to find looser ends than Steve Martin and Martin Short. As Charles-Haden Savage and Oliver Putnam, respectively, the two performers may stick to the scripts in the series, but they spent over a generation improvising over each other.
Martin and Short met while shooting the 1986 film Three Amigos! with Chevy Chase. Admiring new friend Steve’s opulent home, Martin was moved to ask “How did you get so rich,” he recalled on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, marveling at its improbability by admitting “I’ve seen your work.” They’ve been collaborating ever since,...

To celebrate the August 14 birthday of Steve Martin, we’ve got a special photo gallery featuring his 15 greatest films. The actor, comedian, writer, producer, playwright, author and musician is an American icon who has been celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors and American Film Institute. He also received an honorary Oscar for his movie career in 2013.
Nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, six Grammy Awards (with five wins), as well as two Tony Awards, Martin is one of the great talents of the past few decades. There wasn’t a stand-up comedian alive in the mid-1970s who was on a hotter streak, and his first hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live” led to many more appearances. He also now has 2018 Emmy Awards nominations for producing and writing his Netflix comedy special with Martin Short.
He then jumped into movies and never looked back, with such popular flicks as “The Jerk,...
