Alfred Molina has donned a ton of iconic roles spread across multiple different genres that perfectly display his versatility as an actor throughout his over four-decade-long and counting career. But his most commendable performance, besides that of Doc Ock in Spider-Man‘s saga, was his minor debut role as Satipo in Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark from 1981.

Even though his role was very minor with a brief screen time in the Indiana Jones movie, Molina still had to go through stuff that would be a nightmare for all the people terrified of spiders. This is because, while Tobey Maguire’s second film as the web-slinger didn’t really force him to do anything with spiders, it was actually Spielberg who made his scene an absolute nightmare to shoot.

Noora Niasari was editing “Shayda” when the world changed — again — for Iranians.
It was September 2022, and Mahsa Amini had just died in police custody, igniting the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement in Iran. Halfway around the world, Iranian-born filmmaker Niasari struggled to concentrate on completing her film, which she hoped would offer a portrait of female defiance very much in line with the burgeoning movement. She would finish the film that fall and dedicate it to “my mother and the brave women of Iran.”
Since its Sundance 2023 premiere (where it won an audience award and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics), it has screened at roughly 50 festivals and earned a DGA Award nomination. Last year, Australia picked it as its Best International Feature Film submission.
Set in 1995 during the lead-up to the Persian New Year, “Shayda” marks Niasari’s feature debut. She previously directed a string of shorts films that,...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). Not Without My Daughter: Gallo Blunders with Absurd Thriller
The appeal of beholding a train wreck is assuredly a vibe based upon the morbid yet innate curiosity such tragedies inspire in humans. In a metaphorical sense, a film which earns a facetious comparison to the trauma of a vehicular accident can tend to court a cult audience, most often when accidental entertainment is the result.
Longtime Hollywood scribe and director George Gallo, who penned the 1988 comedy classic Midnight Run and received story credit for 1995’s Bad Boys, lassos Morgan Freeman for a third time in the risible Vanquish, a Z-grade action thriller penned by Samuel Bartlett (originally written in 2014).…...

Mike Fenton, the legendary casting director who worked on the “Back to the Future” franchise, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and scores of other classic movies and TV shows, has died. He was 85.
Fenton co-founded what is now known as Casting Society of America in 1982. He was a prominent casting director for more than 40 years, with a mile-long resume that stretched from “The Andy Griffith Show” and “That Girl” to “Chinatown,” “American Graffiti,” “The Godfather II,” “Blade Runner,” “A Christmas Story,” “Norma Rae,” “Footloose,” “Honeymoon in Vegas” and “Chaplin.”
“Working with Mike Fenton was like working in a candy store — he made casting a blast,” Steven Spielberg said in a statement. “His fervent support of actors was the stuff of legend, and after landing a part, any actor’s smile was rarely as wide as Mike’s. He didn’t just support actors, he launched crusades.

Sally Field bounces back in this story of mismatched love - or a romantic delusion... that is 3/4 charm and 1/4 wishful thinking. The May-October romance isn't an outright farce like Harold and Maude, so a few of the comic situations are somewhat wince-inducing. Or am I just feeling my own 'October' discomfort? By all indications, Not Without My Daughter should be a forgettable movie. It was a major motion picture when it premiered — 25 years ago today — starring one of the most-adored actors of the era, Sally Field, coming off the hit Steel Magnolias. But its $15 million opening weekend barely made a dent in the box office; it was largely critically panned for its Islamophobic undertones; and in re-airings, it could easily be mistaken for a Lifetime movie with a timely political pitch: Woman escapes from abusive Iranian husband, scary foreign country, and the evil clutches of Islam. In the larger cultural imagination, the film was consigned to oblivion. But Not Without My Daughter has its own curious legacy. Over the years, it’s been shown in schools, re-aired on television, and notoriously played in Paris the night before the 1998 USA versus Iran World Cup match. One journalist responded to...

Cinematically speaking, Pete Travis has mostly been know for action fare like "Vantage Point" and "Dredd." But he has swung toward drama with the Golden Globe-nominated "Endgame," and now he's lining up a project that sounds like it'll feature elements of both genres, with a pretty great actress in the lead. Screen Daily reports that Rachel Weisz will lead "Snatchback." The film is based on the true story of Maureen Dabbagh, who headed to the Middle East to find her two-year-old daughter after she was kidnapped by Maureen's husband. Travis' take on the material turns Maureen into a "mercenary" (Wtf) who helps other families find their stolen children, while continuing to search for her own. Okay, that's one way to twist this story into something more popcorn-friendly, even if it seems slightly dubious. So, is this basically like a more action packed "Not Without My Daughter"? Production will begin later this year,...

Ahead of its release in UK cinemas, we talk to the director and writer of the funniest film of the year, Pride. It's one of the best, too.
Regular readers will know that we've been banging the drum for the film Pride for a little while now. It's a fabulous comedy, whose laughs are as fierce as its politics, and it arrives in UK cinemas this Friday.
In advance of that, we chatted to its director Matthew Warchus (returning to cinema for the first time since 1999's Simpatico) and writer Stephen Beresford. Both come from a theatre background (Warchus is taking over from Kevin Spacey at the Old Vic next, and his hugely impressive theatre credits include the Matilda musical), and both were in fine form when we met them...

Genre filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network announced today that Alfred Molina (The Da Vinci Code, Spider Man 2) has been cast as Andres Galan in the network's upcoming scripted original set to premiere July 2014. Previously announced cast members include Gabriel Luna, Nicky Whelan and Neil Hopkins.
Created by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and produced in association with K/O Paper Products, the coveted writing/producing team behind Sleepy Hollow, Fringe , Star Trek and the Transformer franchise, Matador will feature Molina as Andrew Galan, a man who built his fortune in the telecom industry, but his true passion is soccer. As owner of the ascendant La Riot franchise, he is celebrated in both the sports and business worlds. But there is another world that he operates in -- as a member of an elite group of powerful global players, ruthless individuals who can effect world events on a scale that one would never imagine. What Galan doesn't know is that there is a mole in his midst. One of his new players, Tony Bravo, is actually an undercover operative, sent in to expose him and his cohorts. As Tony and Galan grow closer, the fate of their relationship may very well determine the fate of the world.
Irreverent and action-packed, Matador chronicles the unlikely rise of Antonio "Matador" Bravo, a popular soccer star, who comes to be known as much for his playboy antics off the field as his dynamic moves on it. But what his fans and family don't realize is that it's all a cover--in truth, he is a skilled covert operative executing missions for a little known branch of the CIA. “Matador” has the kind of fame and notoriety that affords him access to powerful circles of corruption and villainy. But, in balancing the dueling roles in which he's been cast, he will be forced to confront the question of his true identity...and it is this mission which will prove to be his most dangerous.
Robert Rodriguez, El Rey Network's chairman and founder, is set to direct the first episode which will be penned by showrunners, co-creators and executive producers Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin

It took them a few days, but ABC Family has finally realized that a show about a semi-orphaned American teenage girl kidnapped by her extended royal Saudi Arabian family and forced to live with them isn't such a great idea. As a result, they won’t be moving forward with Alice in Arabia, the pilot of which the network ordered last Monday. It turns out that the script, written by U.S. Army veteran Brooke Eikmeier and obtained by BuzzFeed on Friday, confirmed activists' fears about how Muslims would be portrayed on the show. Though ABC Family described Alice in Arabia as "nuanced and character driven" and intended "to give Arabs and Muslims a voice on American TV," BuzzFeed's Rega Jha found it much more similar to 1991's Not Without My Daughter, about an American citizen married to an Iranian man who eventually traps her and their child in his native country.

The New Year is a time to look forward at all the exciting things that are coming ahead, but is also a time of loss. That loss, of course, is with Netflix, as the streaming service will be saying goodbye to a number of previously-available TV shows and movies.
Since Netflix no longer advertises when various titles in its library are expiring, one Reddit thread (via Vulture) collected them for your pleasure. It's worth noting that some of these titles may not permanently disappear, and might return as soon as a day or several hours after being removed as per Netflix's contract agreements.
Fortunately for all your TV-loving folks out there, not many television shows are being removed. The ones on the chopping block are "The Kids in the Hall," the original "Dark Shadows," "Mr. Bean," "Saturday Night Live The 2000s" and "Perfect 10 Model Boxing: Vol. 1." So if any of...

A major downside of VOD services compared with having a vast Blu-ray or DVD library is timing. Services like Netflix, Hulu, etc. have contracts with content providers - contracts that expire usually around the end of a calendar year unless otherwise renewed.
Thus from January 1st, certain films will no longer be available on that service to watch when you want. Today, a Reddit post has listed the films that are about to drop off Netflix due to contract with various rights providers running out. When (or even if) they will return is anyone's guess. The list is as follows:
1492 Conquest Of Paradise
As Good As It Gets
Brick
Being John Malkovich
Back To School
Battle Of Britain
Best Of Times
Born On the Fourth Of July
Braveheart
Body Of Evidence
Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo
Biloxi Blues

Tehran's Hoax of Hollywood conference sets a precedent that other countries could follow. Let's start with Braveheart
Following the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance's Hoax of Hollywood conference in Tehran this week, it has been reported that Iran may "sue Hollywood" over what it considers to be unrealistic portrayals of the country in several films. The most recent offender is Ben Affleck's Argo, based on the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1981 and winner of this year's best picture Oscar. Others named include 300, The Wrestler and Not Without My Daughter.
The representation of Iran in Argo is certainly questionable but, as when the Kazakhstan foreign ministry threatened to sue over Borat, the prospect of a lawsuit doesn't seem entirely realistic. Do nations or governments have a right to accurate representation in fiction? In what jurisdiction could such a case be brought? Wouldn't there be some sort of statute of limitation on suing over,...

Tehran hires French lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre to bring case over Hollywood 'distorting image' of Islamic republic
Iran has hired a controversial French lawyer to file a lawsuit against Hollywood over a series of films, including Ben Affleck's Oscar-winning Argo, that have allegedly portrayed the Islamic republic in a distorted and unrealistic manner.
Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, described by the Iranian media as an "anti-Zionist" lawyer, has travelled to Tehran to meet the authorities in order to lodge a case in an international court against Hollywood directors and producers that officials say have promoted "Iranophobia".
Coutant-Peyre is the wife of the notorious Venezuelan-born terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, known as Carlos the Jackal, whom she is also representing. Ramírez, a self-styled international revolutionary, is serving a life sentence for the killings in 1975 of two French policemen and a suspected informant. Coutant-Peyre and Ramírez married in a ceremony held in jail in 2001 after she converted to Islam.

Isn't it kind of funny how the guy who played high school bully Fred O'Bannion in "Dazed and Confused" has grown up to make a film that has now incensed an entire country?
All of Iran (hey, that's how it reads) is up in arms over Ben Affleck's "Argo" and plans to open a lawsuit against all of Hollywood (again, that's how it reads) for the film's "unrealistic portrayal" of the country, according to Inside Movies.
"Argo" recreates the 1979 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, after which 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days and six Embassy staffers holed up at the home of the Canadian ambassador. Despite the fact that the film hasn't played in any Iranian theaters, "Argo" has been considered to be pro-cia, anti-Iran propaganda by Iranian officials since it was released in the U.S. last October.
The decision on the lawsuit came after...

Argo satirises the events of the Iran hostage crisis, yet, despite being branded 'an offensive act' and added to a list of 'anti-Iranian' films, Affleck's approach is strangely apologetic
In December 1979, a handmade placard outside the occupied Us embassy in Tehran read: "As an Iranian I want you corresponders + journalists + film-takers [to] tell the truth to the world." Whatever the truths of the Iranian revolution – most would agree it began as a popular uprising driven in part by plausible claims against Us policies – film-makers addressing its aftermath from inside Iran have had to depend on allegorical techniques, while those free to address it less obliquely from abroad have had much read into their motives.
Iran's rulers regard foreign productions on Iranian subjects – whether by émigrés or non-Iranians – with prejudice. Warnings of "soft war" and "psychological warfare" waged through culture and entertainment are a recurring theme in Iranian state media. Such...

"Taken 2" is coming out this weekend, and if you're anything like us, you're huge fans of the franchise. First of all, Liam Neeson's daughter gets taken. Then, Liam Neeson finds her and brings her back to safety, but not before kicking the asses of terrorists masterminds. It's an excellent idea and an excellent movie.
Our only problem is the name, "Taken 2." It lacks the inspiration that all "Taken" fans have come to expect. But it's not too late to change the title -- in fact, the producers were probably just too busy making a great movie come up with another title. In that spirit, we've come up with some suggestions they are free to use. See you at the movies!

I don’t go to movies to be told what to think. Even if I agree with what I’m being told is right, I am offended by the arrogance of having that decided for me.
This is a movie about kids who can’t read for adults who can’t think. My logline for this movie would be: it’s the opposite of Stand And Deliver (stupid students and incompetent teachers) crossed with Not Without My Daughter; reduce and simmer mixture until you reach lowest common denominator.
The movie opens with the superimposed text “inspired by actual events.” That’s quite a suspicious redundancy. My personal opinion (sic) is that all events are actual by definition, unless someone else sees them differently. I presume this is the case as there is no prologue nor epilogue after the film to that describes the “actual events” the film inspired.

Toronto -- For those viewers who can suspend their disbelief enough to accept Marisa Tomei playing a native Syrian woman named Fatima, writer-director Ruba Nadda’s Damascus-set thriller Inescapable may be just about palatable. But that casting choice is really only one of many unconvincing decisions in this contrived Canadian mash-up of Taken and Not Without My Daughter, and despite a hot button setting, the film will at best break out to local theatrical and worldwide ancillary slots following its Toronto premiere. It’s not as if the concept weren’t juicy enough: Syrian-born, Toronto-based executive Adib (Alexander Siddig)

We thought we were nearing the end of our coverage of the super-fast divorce of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, but then we read this interesting tidbit in the Los Angeles Times: Katie reportedly used a disposable cell phone to talk to lawyers when she began planning to file for divorce. Because, we guess, Tom and the Scientologists had her regular phone tapped? So creepy and intriguing! So straight out of a movie starring either Katie Holmes or Tom Cruise!
What else did these two probably learn from TV and movies? Here are our wild speculations:
1. Radar says Tom duct-taped all the hallway security cameras in his Iceland hotel the last time Katie stayed there. We’re not sure who he thought would be watching them, but he probably should have taped photos that look exactly like the hallway instead. That’s what Ethan Hunt would have done.

Scientology, Dawson's Creek, older women ... what really happened in the TomKat marriage?
It is, of course, a desperately sad thing when any marriage breaks up. Sympathy of the highest order should be expressed from those on the outside but, really, if you don't actually know the couple, nothing should be said at all. It is none of your business. Decorum, maturity and tactfully quiet understanding must be maintained.
Any marriage, that is, except one that involves Tom Cruise. And that is because Cruise, as everyone knows, is an alien. An evil alien. Come on, we all know it. Seriously, just try to imagine Cruise naked. See? It is literally impossible to imagine him any other way but with a smooth plastic groin, as genital-free as a Ken doll. That is because, despite being blessed with a face that came straight from the Handsome Factory, this is purely a mask (literally,...

Jerusalem -- Israel is tired of Hollywood filming Jesus' crucifixion in Italy and the Crusader invasion of the Holy Land in Morocco.
So Israeli officials are promising better tax breaks, terror attack insurance and handouts of up to $400,000 to lure international movie producers to the holy city of Jerusalem. They want to cash in on the multibillion-dollar industry, and want the real Jerusalem on the silver screen – not Mediterranean stand-ins.
"It's absurd. Movies set in Jerusalem are filmed in Malta, Morocco and Greece," said Yoram Honig, an Israeli film director and 10th-generation Jerusalemite. He heads the Jerusalem Film Fund, which was set up three years ago to encourage more moviemaking in the city.
According to conventional wisdom in Hollywood, Jerusalem is too volatile to ensure smooth filming on location. International insurance companies have traditionally refused to provide terrorism risk coverage, or offered it at exorbitant prices.

Apparently because he still has an hour or two to kill between all the movies and TV work he’s already got lined up, Sean Bean has joined Ashley Judd’s new show on ABC called “Missing”, which sounds like a cross between “Taken” and “Not Without my Daughter”. Bean will play Judd’s husband on the show, who is killed early in the pilot, but returns in flashbacks throughout the season. The plot: The story centers on a worried mom who, after her son disappears in Italy while overseas for a summer internship, takes it upon herself to travel to Europe and track him down. It soon becomes clear that this isn’t any ordinary woman, but a former CIA agent who will stop at nothing to bring her son home alive. Unlike his ex-cia wife, though, Bean’s character Paul on the show will be your average husband...

This week on Desperate Housewives, the theme of Thanksgiving took center stage as the holiday sent us spiraling to the much talked about midseason cliffhanger involving Paul Young's devious plan for the residents of Wisteria Lane, as well as the main ladies personal dilemmas also.

I just want to believe that everything is still real.
The writers have a knack for giving Samantha Bloom a line within each episode that almost perfectly expresses what I'm thinking. After baiting me last week with a glimmer of hope that Undercovers was ready to burst forth from its doldrums, we're back to square one. Try as I may to find something positive to highlight about "Not WIthout My Daughter," I'm afraid it's just not possible.
The Blooms were tasked to bring in a North Korean scientist named Shin Won who wanted to defect to the U.S. and had a prototype of some super advanced weaponized matter manipulating device.
According to Shaw, it should have been a relative piece of cake. Unfortunately, it's never quite that simple, and - as has been more often than not the case with Undercovers - not that interesting, either.
I suppose it...

The claws came out tonight on Wisteria Lane, but so did the heavy hitting drama. In short, I got my butt kicked.
Not Without My Daughter!
I guess the Powers That Be heard my cry last week when it came to Gaby’s story line, which was given top notch treatment this week not only in the writing, but in the performances as well. Eva Longoria hit a home run, made a touchdown, and slam dunked her portrayal of the devastated mother. There was no comedic schtick this week and it was a great change to see Gaby given some real drama for once to deal with. This only proves that Eva Longoria-Parker has the chops to be versatile in her acting range, and is not just some comedic fodder for the show.
As for the story line, it’s really painful, especially since we as the audience have grown attached to Juanita,...

South African princess Charlize Theron looks to have found yet another project to add to her increasingly busy schedule. She's recently acquired the screen rights to Christopher Buckley's novel "Florence of Arabia" about a woman who's best friend marries an Middle Eastern prince and ends up being executed for renting Not Without My Daughter. Theron will play a State Dept. employee who feels the punishment exceeded the crime and goes on to fight for women's rights in the male-dominated society. It's a satire. I like Theron quite a bit. Her talented and naked presence in Reindeer Games and Two Days In The Valley helps make both films highly rewatchable. And in addition to this new project she currently has eight other future titles listed on IMDb. My wish though is that she'd focus on one single project... her remake of Chan-wook Park's Sympathy For Lady Vengeance. Park himself says Theron "gets" the character and I...
