HBO has given a series order to the skateboarding comedy “Betty” from “Skate Kitchen” director Crystal Moselle and “Love” co-creator Lesley Arfin.
Inspired by Moselle’s critically-acclaimed 2018 Sundance hit “Skate Kitchen,” the six-episode series is set against the backdrop of New York City and follows “a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.”
Rachelle Vinberg will reprise her role from the film, starring in the series as Camille, a young skater who “wants to be down with the dudes and has fought hard for the small space she’s carved out with them.” She’ll be joined in the series by a few “Skate Kitchen” co-stars, including Nina Moran as Kirt, Kabrina Adams (aka Moonbear) as Honeybear, Dede Lovelace as Janay and Ajani Russell as Indigo.

Joan Micklin Silver applies sensitive direction to Ann Beattie’s novel about a lonely guy trying to win back his girlfriend, and going about it in all the wrong ways. John Heard is excellent as Charles, who can’t understand why Laura (Mary Beth Hurt) has gone back to her husband and child. The whole thing plays out during a snowy winter in Salt Lake City… which is not the place to expect unrealistic romantic dreams to come true.

Being called the French Hitchcock does Claude Chabrol a disservice, as his dark thrillers approach mystery and suspense almost completely through character, not cinematics. These three very good 1990s productions are completely different in tone and approach, and each showcases a stunning French actress.

The CW has a "super" new lineup for Fall 2016-2017, including the arrival of "Supergirl," which appears to be making a smooth transition from CBS on the same night and time, plus "Supernatural" moving once again for Season 12, this time back to Thursdays. The network really wants to keep fans on their toes with that show (which also has new showrunners). Whatever. Fans will follow it wherever it goes, even if it gets traded to CBS like a network fantasy league.
The president of The CW, Mark Pedowitz, issued a statement with the schedule release:
"We have four terrific additions to our schedule next season, and five great anchors at eight o'clock, every night of the week. [...] We are thrilled to have Supergirl on The CW this fall, joining our popular roster of DC heroes. Plus, we have three new series lined up for next season that perfectly fit our brand,...

I have a friend who loved opera and music growing up, and now she sings in the chorus for the Metropolitan Opera. There’s something energizing when you witness someone leverage their passion and turn it into a wonderful and fulfilling career.
And my friend, comic writer Paul Kupperberg, is exactly that kind of person.
As a kid back in 1976, Paul was buying comics at My Friend’s Bookstore in Flatbush, Brooklyn. “My ideal book store,” Kupperberg explained. “Carts out front, loaded with cheap books. The counter on the right had all the Golden Age issues. Superman #1 was $100. They used the Howard Rogofsky price list. Behind the counter there were boxes on the shelves. A magical place – we’d go on weekends. We would even work there.”

This article accompanies the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s dual retrospective of the films of Jacques Rivette and David Lynch and is part of an ongoing review of Rivette’s films for the Notebook, in light of several major re-releases of his work.“I’m going to the movies!” — Pauline Kael In Céline and Julie Go Boating Jacques Rivette takes the stuff of living—quite literally documentary shots of Paris in summertime 1973—and makes it a kind of mock-backdrop to a world of psychedelic fiction. The opening scene, built from criss-crossing point-of-view shots, takes routine images of parkgoers milling around on a warm day and whips them into a particular perspective, that of curious, cooing librarian Julie (Dominique Labourier), who sedately watches the goings-on while leafing through her book of magic. In documenting Julie’s subsequent pursual of Juliet Berto’s ragtag Céline, an impulse-effort to return shedded belongings...

The Belgian-born Georges Simenon (1903-1989) wrote over 200 novels (by Wikipedia's count) plus many shorter works. The New York Times estimates that number (including his memoirs and nonfiction works) as being between 400 and 500. Simenon's creation, Inspector Jules Maigret, who appeared in about 75 works, "ranks only after Sherlock Holmes as the world's best known fictional detective." (I'm not sure how Poirot feels about that.) Of course, such popularity could not be overlooked by the entertainment industry, and imdb.com has compiled a list of 132 movies and TV shows based on his oeuvre. And now the Anthology Archives, with Kathy Geritz and the Pacific Film Archive, is presenting 14 of these celluloid joys within the series appropriately entitled Cine-Simenon: George Simenon on Film, which runs until August 21st.
Before viewing the celluloid Simenon, I decided to nestle down with the textural Simenon, and within a week, I had plowed through five of his works,...

Cinema is a kind of uber-art form that’s made up of a multitude of other forms of art including writing, directing, acting, drawing, design, photography and fashion. As such, film is, as all cinema aficionados know, a highly collaborative venture.
One of the most consistently fascinating collaborations in cinema is that of the director and actor.
This article will examine some of the great director & actor teams. It’s important to note that this piece is not intended as a film history survey detailing all the generally revered collaborations.
There is a wealth of information and study available on such duos as John Ford & John Wayne, Howard Hawks & John Wayne, Elia Kazan & Marlon Brando, Akira Kurosawa & Toshiro Mifune, Alfred Hitchcock & James Stewart, Ingmar Bergman & Max Von Sydow, Federico Fellini & Giulietta Masina/Marcello Mastroianni, Billy Wilder & Jack Lemmon, Francis Ford Coppola & Al Pacino, Woody Allen & Diane Keaton, Martin Scorsese & Robert DeNiro...

This is why "Mad Men" is still TV's best drama.
My confidence may have been shaken by last week's uneven installment -- one of three average, momentum-stunting, episodes this season along with "The Flood" and "Man with a Plan" -- but as we've seen repeatedly in the past, be patient with "Mad Men" and you will be rewarded.
"Favors" was downright masterful in its confluence of storylines, major reveals and welcome callbacks. This was "Mad Men" craftsmanship at its finest, and while it provided several miserable developments in the characters' lives, it made us incredibly happy as viewers.
[Note: In the spirit of showrunner Matthew Weiner declaring that this season is about Dr. Arnold Rosen telling Don, "People will do anything to alleviate their anxiety," we're tracking the happiness of key characters week by week.]
The "Mad Men" happiness index, week ten:
1) Roger (last week, #1): This hasn't been a sterling season for Roger, who is reduced to juggling oranges and apologizing for courting possible conflicting business (Sunkist versus Ted's play for Ocean Spray). John Slattery must have needed a break after directing last week's episode.
2) Megan (last week,...

The knock on the front door of Charlie Sheen's troubled ex-wife Brooke Mueller's home came around 9 p.m. on May 2. Social workers from L.A.'s Department of Child and Family Services, alarmed by Mueller's erratic behavior in recent weeks, had arrived for one explicit reason: to take custody of her two 4-year-old twins, Bob and Max. "It was a real mess," says a Sheen friend familiar with the incident. But what happened next came to many as a shock. Denise Richards, 42, Sheen's ex wife, stepped forward to offer her help, caring for the children. "Denise told Charlie...

I was thinking about The Carrie Diaries, and a bizarre truth hit me: It's a great idea for a show! Though Sex and the City ran six seasons, inspecting Carrie Bradshaw's teenage history through whatever overly glamorized or cutesy lens is intriguing. All these years after the HBO hit left the air, Carrie is a beloved and somehow relevant protagonist that everyone has an opinion about. I salute The Carrie Diaries for exploring her deep past. Moreover, I hope it inspires TV networks to mine the potentially fertile backstories of these five other classic TV shows, which range from the broadly comic to the grimly serious.

Rather than exhorting the depressed to help themselves, fiction can provide a welcome realisation that we are not alone in despair
The plan to refer people with mild depression and anxiety to books has provoked some fascinating discussions, not least the discussion here of how fiction can be more helpful than non self-help. Having studied philosophy, I still have Elizabeth Anscombe's injunction to stop doing philosophy and start reading novels ringing in my ears, so this is no surprise. What I want to make the case for is those works of fiction that go beyond the positive, beyond stories of survival, works many wouldn't imagine offering help, would even want to keep out of the hands of the mentally fragile.
I made the case for the dangerousness of the blanket prescription of self-help in the comments on other posts here, the guilt when we do not succeed in pulling ourselves from the mire,...

The lingering memory of my year of blogging for the Sfbc — which ended five years ago, so I really should be over it by this point — still compels me to post SFnal awards, even when I do so far too late to benefit anyone. What can I say? I’m a flawed person.
Anyway, here’s some recent awards that you probably already know about:
2011 Aurealis Awards
The Australian national awards for Sf and other imaginative literature were given out three weeks ago (I know, I know!), and the full list has been available since then.
Here’s the novel-length awards, just because:
Young Adult Novel: Only Ever Always, by Penni Russon Fantasy Novel: Ember and Ash, by Pamela Freeman Science Fiction Novel: The Courier’s New Bicycle, by Kim Westwood
(via Sf Signal)
Analog and Asimov’s Reader’s Awards

If when you arrive at the office this morning, you hear the word “lame” being bandied about, fear not, gentle reader. It’s likely that the water cooler talk is not about you, but about last night’s finale of Desperate Housewives.
Now, I’ll admit: I went into the last-ever outing with low expectations. After all, since airing one of the most brilliant pilots in recent television history, this show has rarely — if ever — managed to recreate the very elements that originally drew me in. Over the years, the series devolved into uninspired, overly-long “mysteries” (Betty Applewhite, anyone?) and the type of humor that one would expect to find in a Saturday morning cartoon as opposed to a Sunday night sudser. The childish bickering that ensued after Julie’s water broke on the way to Renee’s wedding was everything wrong with Housewives. Time and again, we sat through...

French film director and close associate of François Truffaut
The film director Claude Miller, who has died aged 70 after a long illness, was continually dogged by comparisons to his friend and mentor François Truffaut. Hardly a review of his films failed to mention Truffaut in some way or another. This came about for various reasons. Miller was Truffaut's production manager on several occasions and made subtle references to the older director's work in many of his own films, almost always mentioning him in interviews. He had a small role in Truffaut's L'Enfant Sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970) and adapted La Petite Voleuse (The Little Thief, 1988) from a 30-page screenplay that Truffaut had written a few years before his death.
When Truffaut was once asked whether he had started a school of directors, he denied it. "These people are more influenced by other directors than myself. If Claude Miller has points in common with me,...

Gerard Butler has completed treatment for substance-abuse issues, his rep has confirmed to People. "Gerard has completed a successful course of treatment and has returned home in good health," says the spokesperson. "We will not be making any further comment at this time." Butler, 42, checked himself into the Betty Ford clinic three weeks ago because he realized he was becoming reliant on prescription drugs after being badly injured in a surfing accident in December, TMZ reports. He allegedly decided to enter rehab before developing a full-blown addiction to the drugs. Butler's issues reportedly date back to 2006, when he began struggling...

Dana Delany may have her own drama now on ABC, but it looks like the popular actress won’t take for granted the great gig she once had on Wisteria Lane. The Body of Proof star is set to return to Desperate Housewives this season to help the long-running sudser say goodbye to its fans.
It’s unclear when Delany, who played Katherine, will stage her comeback, but she won’t be alone: TVline says she’ll join Kyle MacLachlan (Orson) and Andrea Bowen (Julie) in a future episode or two. At the start of the season, Executive Producer Bob Daily...

I was saddened to learn this morning that Betty Garrett, the great star of stage, screen, and TV, passed away yesterday at the age of 94 after suffering an aortic aneurysm.
Garrett was one of those rare people — like, say, Jack Valenti — who happened to be a witness to and/or participant in a remarkably high number of historic events of the 20th century. She was a member of Orson Welles’s famed Mercury Theatre company, and was with him on the night that he shook up America with his infamous radio broadcast of “The War of the Worlds” (1938); she was Frank Sinatra’s leading lady in two of the earliest great M-g-m musical-comedies, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” (1949) and “On the Town” (1949); her career was greatly hurt by the Hollywood Red Scare after her husband, the Oscar nominated actor Larry Parks, refused to name names before the House Committee...

"American Idol" travels to San Francisco and clearly the California talent is split north/south because it is 100x better than Los Angeles.
San Francisco kicks off with Inessa Lee, a Ukrainian girl that makes us feel fairly uncomforatable because she's very sexualized in her YouTube videos, but she also looks 14. There's an Ick Factor here. She sings "I'm All Out of Love" by Air Supply, which makes us love her just a little bit because - Air Supply! But it's not that good and she also has that Kirsten Dunst snaggletooth thing going, as she simpers and Betty Boops her way around the room. Back to icky.
After a rough morning full of bad singers and bird poop, the afternoon starts with Brittany Mazur, Lara Johnston and Matthew Nuss who all sing very nice in the tiny snippet we see and get sent to Hollywood.
The next full audition is Stefano Langone,...

My Thoughts: When I first saw the trailer I thought Conviction had Oscar written all over it. Unfortunately, it did not pick up the buzz when it was in the theater. I have yet to see the film, I'm likely to see it now that it's on DVD strictly for Rockwell. Is this a film worth seeing?
Synopsis:
Two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell deliver unforgettable performances in this incredible true story that co-stars Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis and Peter Gallagher. Swank plays Betty Anne Waters,...

The Film
Tom Green's studio directorial debut, the infamous Freddy Got Fingered (2001) is a film I've wanted to redeem even since I began writing for Pajiba in 2009. I acknowledge that the task ahead of me is Sisyphean, as the film boasts an 11% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (7% if limited to "Top Critics"). Yet, the film does have its share of eloquent defenders, most notably A.O. Scott's thoughtful analysis in The New York Times and Nathan Rabin's dissection for The Av Club's series, "My Year of Flops." I've been ambivalent to write this piece because of intimidation. Not an intimidation of the film or my own affection towards it (and whatever wild eyed, gasps of disbelief it may produce) but because, quite simply, Scott and Rabin are far greater writers than I and I felt that my contribution would merely be the equivalent of whipping a dead horse. Well,...

There’s a certain expectation when you watch a trailer for a drama based on what you’re told is an “inspiring” true-life tale. There are the quick cuts, the speeches about how X will do Y, the rising score, the slow-mo over emotional moments and hugs… And they’re all present in this new trailer for Conviction. But while the promo might fall victim to some of the clichés of the genre, the cast looks solid, with Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver and Peter Gallagher’s eyebrows among the ensemble.Conviction as a title here has a dual meaning taken from the actual events. Betty Anne Waters’ (Swank) older sibling Kenny (Rockwell) is shoved in prison for murder in 1983. Betty Anne decides that she’ll get him out. But she doesn’t bake him a cake with a file in it – that would be too easy. And wouldn...

Sometimes we resent how the biological drive takes the great actresses away from us for years at a time or even forever. We're selfish about movies. Sue us. You'll be hearing or saying "Happy Mother's Day" all day today -- call your mother! -- but just for something a bit different we'd like to wish the following actresses and directors a "Happy Day!" even though they never had children (biological or adopted).
The Queen... Dame Helen Mirren
There's more than one way to give back to the universe and live on past your own time.
These women have given us much to enjoy so Happy Day to them, too. Some of them, like Katharine Hepburn, are no longer with us and some of them, like Zeéeee and The Lovely Laura Linney may yet still have children... but that's no reason not to cherish what any of them have already given the world over the years.

We love women around here. Okay, not in that way, but we do love them and can certainly appreciate their many charms. Unfortunately, we spend so much time on AfterElton.com talking about the menfolk that it might lead you to think otherwise.
To remedy that, the AfterElton.com staff put their heads together and compiled a list of Ten Women We Love in 2010. Of course, this is far from a complete roster. There are lots of ladies missing: our mothers, Judge Judy, Rachel Maddow and Kathy Griffin to name just a few. What we were looking for with this list however were women we admire with strong breakout stories this year. Maybe they are a standout on a new hit TV show, or perhaps they've demonstrated unusual bravery and grace in fighting Glbt discrimination, or possibly they've been around for a long time, but have had a recent career...

All kidding aside, I really did conduct a poll. And I won. By a landslide. Seriously. Moving on... here's your big scoop:...

Good old season two of Scrubs started off with Dr. Cox angry at J.D. for finding out his mentee slept with his ex-wife and ended with Cox discovering that Jordan's baby, Jack, was actually son.
Along the way we had some incredible guest stars, including Tasty Coma Wife (Amy Smart), Turk's borther (D.L. Hughley), the reason Cox and Jordan got divorced (Jay Mohr) and Turk and J.D.'s old college buddy, Spence (Ryan Reynolds).
Overall, the second season will always be one of our favorites and had some of the most memorable Scrubs moments. Now's your chance to relive the season with some of our favorite Scrubs quotes from the season.
Here's just some of our favorite Scrubs season two quotes, you can follow the previous link for the rest!

Photo: Screen Actors Guild And we're back again less than a week after the Golden Globes brought us confirmation Avatar is not only a box-office juggernaut, but also a potential awards show king. However, tonight won't be Avatar's night as it is not among the nominees at the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which means any number of other films can see their stock rise as the actors weigh in with their opinion when it comes to the best of the year. I will be here all night long starting around 4:30 Pm Pst with up-to-the-minute commentary and winners just like I was for the Golden Globes (read that here) and will do for the Oscars in March. But tonight is about the SAGs so before we get to the commentary there are a few things to preview.

The greatest UFO incident of all time was not Roswell or Area 51--it was when little green men landed in the North Pole and attempted to kidnap Santa Claus! This occurred in the grade Z atrocity, Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.
Everyone knows Santa Claus Conquers The Martians, the 45-year old bad movie that surfaces this time of year on late night TV and at 99-Cents Only Stores. It's #77 on the IMDb's "Bottom 100" of the worst movies of all time.
The legendary made-in-New Jersey bomb that pits the Christmas Crusader against backwards aliens who know nothing about our Yuletide traditions, is a goofy holiday perennial best known for introducing the world to Pia Zadora, who played the Martian daughter, Girmar..
The Maverick Theater in Fullerton, California lives up to their name by staging a faithful adaptation of Santa Claus Conquers The Martians that simultaneously takes the piss out of it!
