It's astonishing the longevity of the "Evil Dead" series, given how deliberately thin the original film's mythology was. In Sam Raimi's 1981 low-budget classic, "The Evil Dead," a group of college kids, including the acerbic Ash (Bruce Campbell) hole up in a remote forest cabin for the usual reasons, when they find an evil-looking book in the basement -- the Necronomicon -- and a mysterious tape recorder. Playing back the tape, they hear evil incantations from the book, read by the cabin's previous tenant. The spell awakens evil monsters who kill the college kids and are generally a nuisance to Ash.
In the 1987 sequel-cum-remake, "Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn," it's further established that a second spell can banish the monsters back to Hell ... and also throw Ash back in time to the 14th century. The third film in the series, 1993's "Army of Darkness," takes place in the distant past,...

In January 2021, the Jared Padalecki-starring and executive-produced “Walker, Texas Ranger” reboot (simply titled “Walker”) premiered as a new hit for The CW. Perhaps not quite infiltrating pop culture the same way as “Riverdale” had, still, it found success as a family and crime drama. The show was soon renewed for a second season, and is about to start its third. In the process of that success, naturally, the series was able to go the spinoff route — making this CW fall season two-for-two for spinoffs on Padalecki-associated vehicles, as the “Supernatural” prequel “The Winchesters” is also premiering soon, and he’s an executive producer on “Walker: Independence.” But the most interesting aspect of both of these spinoffs is that they specifically see value not in telling concurrent or future stories of the characters, but instead going back to the past, in prequel form.

Bruce Campbell has played a lifetime’s worth of sleazebags — miserable, self-serving lowlifes who drag everyone else down with them. His latest is Gary, an alcoholic contractor who also goes by “Captain” on Lodge 49. He was introduced on the show last week, chugging spirits from a paper bag and waking up in his own vomit as he reels from his divorce. The show’s protagonists – Wyatt Russell’s Dud and Brent Jennings’ Ernie, members of a local fraternal lodge — searched for the mystery man far and wide, seeking his sage-like wisdom.

Brad Kern is exiting his role as executive producer/showrunner of NCIS: New Orleans. He will serve as consultant on the series going forward. NCIS: New Orleans executive producer Chris Silber has been named new showrunner.
The move comes months after word surfaced in December that Kern had been the subject of two Human Resources investigations by CBS TV Studios while working on the studio’s popular CBS crime procedural. Both reportedly were triggered by complaints from co-workers about a hostile work environment on the show.
Following the second investigation, Kern was reportedly assigned to and underwent six months of sensitivity training/counseling, which he completed in February 2017. There have been no new official complaints filed against him since.

Lille, France — In town for a keynote address at this year’s Series Mania, the first edition since moving from Paris to Lille, preeminent Hollywood TV writer and showrunner Carlton Cuse addressed a packed Ugc center for the better part of two hours in which he addressed his early career, the “Lost” finale, and the need for diversity in a writers’ room.
The keynote started by looking back at Cuse’s grade school years, when his parents split and he found himself with afternoons free to sit and watch reruns while his mom worked. It’s clear that period had a major impact on Cuse as a creative.
From “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.” to Jack in “Lost,” to Norman in “Bates Motel,” many of Cuse’s leads have estranged relationships with their fathers that they are working to resolve, if a resolution is possible. It’s also worth noting that Brisco County Jr.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best one-and-done show, a.k.a. a One-Season Wonder? (This refers to shows that only got one season and tragically did not get renewed, as opposed to limited series that never intended to continue.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
There are so many! But for me the best will always be “Freaks and Geeks.” It’s a show that I watched at an age before I really understood the whole TV renewal/cancellation process, but even then I knew it was unjustly short. The show was such a great blend of smarts, snark, and genuine emotions, in a way that could actually be painful to watch.

"Bones" has cast former "Gossip Girl" star Kelly Rutherford to appear in an upcoming episode of Season 9.
The actress who once played Lily van der Woodsen will guest-star as Stephanie McNamara, according to The Hollywood Reporter. An old friend of Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne), Stephanie becomes involved in one of the Jeffersonian's cases when her brother becomes a murder suspect. A wealthy woman, she is at first pleased to see Hodgins before learning that being on the target end of a murder investigation is no fun at all.
Interestingly, this marks the second occasion in which an old friend of Hodgins gets involved with a murder. In the Season 2 episode, "The Man in the Mansion," a college friend -- and the man who married Hodgins' one-time girlfriend -- was murdered. Hodgins subsequently got into trouble for improper bias and for tampering with evidence.

The 2011 Emmy Award nominations were announced this morning, and while there is plenty there to complain about (a "Big Bang Theory" nomination, the absence of nominations for Nick Offerman and "Community"), as Emmy nominations typically go, it's better than most years. There were some deserving drama series left out, but there's only six slots, and I don't fault the Academy for the ones chosen.
All the same, it is Emmy nomination day, and I have to give you guys something to grouse about. So how about this: A list of the 25 Best TV Shows that were never nominated for a Best Series Emmy in either the drama or comedy categories. I've even ranked them to give you more ammunition with which to throw back. So, have at it: Gnash those terrible teeth, roll those terrible eyes, show those terrible claws. I'm certain there's at least one show among this list...

What do we think of "Real Steel?" It's a hard question to answer without having actually seen the movie. But when the film was first announced, a lot of people scoffed at the idea of Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy pursuing a so-called "robot boxing movie." Yet both parties have strongly stated that the film is more than that, and based on the footage we've seen so far, we're inclined to agree.
What's more, it seems that Jackman and Levy had such a positive experience on "Real Steel" that they're looking for a repeat performance. No, not a sequel — not yet, at least — but the Australian actor and the "Night at the Museum" director are teaming up to get "Lost" with a new untitled action adventure pitch.
Deadline reports the news, though there are zero details about the plot of the film beyond Jackman and Levy's involvement. But there's another...

In no particular order, here are the movies that delivered the goods this past year.
A huge improvement over George A. Romero’s dull movie from ’73.
The best genre film of 2010. Jon Knautz hit it out of the park.
Yes, I liked Jonah Hex. The horror-western came off like a big budget version of The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
Although the casting is off and Freddy’s make-up looks all wrong, the film is scary and plays more like a prequel than a remake. After pointless rehashes like The Hitcher, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Friday the 13th; Platinum Dunes finally got it right.
Genre-whippin boy M. Night Shymalan returns to glory in the producer’s chair with a Twilight Zone-esque nailbitter.
John Cusack, Chevy Chase, and Crispin Glover. What is not to like?
Robert Rodriguez’s unholy drive-in triple feature is complete. From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror,...

We all know him. We all love him. In fact he may be, despite what certain beer commercials say, the most interesting man in the world. His name is Bruce Campbell and he’s the world’s most famous B-Movie actor! Today we’ll be counting the Top Ten Bruce Campbell Roles, starting with number ten…..
10. My Name Is Bruce (Movie, 2007)
Despite being poorly reviewed (by me included), This still makes the list as it is uncut, unadulterated Bruce Campbell in it’s purest form. The plot is a little iffy and the ending is nothing more than a B-Movie send up, but who gives a damn about plot when Bruce Campbell is kicking ancient monster ass in a Hawaiian Shirt?
9. Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters (Movie, 2007)
8. The X-Files (TV Series, “Terms of Endearment”, 1999)
7. The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. (TV Series, 1993-1994)

Nan Martin was a leading character actress on stage, screen and television for over fifty years. She may be best remembered by horror fans for her role as Amanda Krueger (aka Sister Mary Helena), the mother of supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger, in 1987’s A Nightmare in Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, with Robert Englund as Freddy.
Martin was born in Decatur, Illinois, on July 15, 1927, and was raised in Santa Monica, California. She began performing on stage while attending UCLA, and worked as a fashion model in the late 1940s. She subsequently moved to New York, where she made her Broadway debut in 1950. She appeared in several other Broadway productions, and continued to perform on stage throughout her career.
She also appeared frequently on television from the mid-1950s, with roles in such series as The Twilight Zone as Laura Ford in the 1963 episode “The Incredible World of Horace Ford”, The Invaders,...

Browsing in bookstores, I’ve discovered the closing of the West. I’ve noticed over the years how the racks devoted to paperback Westerns (at least here in the East) have steadily shrunk. Now, in many stores here, there are only two or three shelves of Westerns (and mostly those are filled with multiple titles by Louis L’Amour). Equally, on DVD shelves, there’s usually only a single section of movie Westerns; in some stores, the Westerns are just mixed in amongst the action-adventure entries. And of course there are few new Western films in theaters and no current TV series. It’s sad evidence, I think, that we’re slowly Losing the Western.
As a Western fan, I’m concerned about its increasing rarity. Here’s where I come from on it: Although born in Pennsylvania, I lived in the West for a decade while growing up—New...

My name is Alynda and I am an organ donor. There, now everybody knows and we don't have to go through any confusion or sticky sitches in the hospital, Three Rivers-style. What did you think of the Rivers debut, the few of you who watched it? (If you missed it, by the way, you can catch it here.) I'm still trying to decide if I'm giving it too much leeway because star Alex O'Loughlin is in my imaginary-boyfriend stable (and we're pretty serious, with his having met my mom and all). But I'll try to be objective. Let's start...

Writer-producer John McNamara has inked a two-year overall deal with CBS Paramount Network Television. Under the seven-figure pact, McNamara has joined the studio's CBS drama pilot Orpheus as an executive producer and will develop new projects for the studio. "John is somebody that I'd admired and respected for years and years," CBS Paramount Network TV president David Stapf said. "He's uniquely talented in that he can create, develop and write in a variety of genres. He is a phenomenal writer as well as a great showrunner and a great team player." Stapf and McNamara's paths have crossed twice before, first at Warner Bros. TV where McNamara was working on such shows as The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Stapf ran the publicity department; and later at CBS where Stapf was the head of current programming while McNamara executive produced the network's drama series The Fugitive.
