Before Star Trek: Discovery, treat yourself to some Star Trek: The Next Generation classics...
Leading the charge back to television for the Star Trek franchise (just as Star Trek: Discovery is now), and paving the way for three further series to follow (fingers crossed that happens again), Star Trek: The Next Generation's 7 seasons had some very high points, and a couple of very low ones (that some would simply call “season 1....”, not that I’m one of them.)
See related Looking back at Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan Would Khan be right for Jj Abrams’ Star Trek sequel? Planet Of The Titans: the Star Trek movie that never was Star Trek: was Cumberbatch supposed to be Gary Mitchell? Star Trek: the battle to make The Motion Picture
These are the top 25 “must-watch” episodes, not necessarily the top 25 for quality, or indeed my 25 favourites,...

Just don’t forget that, like The Original Series, The Next Generation is a product of its time, and as such certain issues that writers wanted to bring to the screen not only necessitated allegory, but sometimes stretched it thin so as not to raise issues with censorship.

The Lazarus Effect
Written by Luke Dawson & Jeremy Slater
Directed by David Gelb
USA, 2015
It’s easy to be disillusioned by bland, scare-free horror films like The Lazarus Effect. Of course, not every horror film makes Ouija look like The Exorcist, but perhaps we can use this as a learning exercise. Rather than cursing the darkness, let’s light a little candle and look at “Three Things We Can Learn from The Lazarus Effect.”
1.) Bringing things back from the dead is no big thing.
Most horror films exist in the ‘real world’ for the express purpose of scaring us with supernatural or unusual phenomena. Since dealing with serial killers or zombies isn’t an everyday occurrence for most folks, the prospect of suddenly facing one is disconcerting. Apparently, this shock factor doesn’t extend to the realm of resurrection, however.
The Lazarus Effect treats re-animation like a walk in the park.

Here’s what we know about The Vampire Diaries’ sixth season: Elena really misses Damon, Jeremy really misses Bonnie, every supernatural being really misses Mystic Falls, and Stefan has a new bed buddy. Oh, and this might be Alaric’s new love interest.
But in the first photos from the season 6 premiere, titled “Fresh Starts and Second Chances,” the focus is on the boys of Mystic Falls, namely Alaric, who has found himself as both a vampire and a college professor. His first order of business? Stopping Tyler from reliving his mistakes of season 1. Only, instead of using his werewolf...

“I am so done with you.” Emily’s words to Alison on Tuesday’s Pretty Little Liars may have seemed harsh, but honestly, can you blame her?
Related Pretty Little Liars: 40+ Photos From the Summer Finale — But Where’s Alison?
These girls have risked everything — their reputations, their sanity, their lives — to help her over the past few years, and she finally went too far this week by falsely identifying Cyrus as her kidnapper. In fact, she “remembered” an entire scenario in which Cyrus mugged her and left her with that scar on her thigh. But did any of that even happen?...

NBC's long-running weight loss competition show "The Biggest Loser" crowned a winner for the Second Chances edition Tuesday (Feb. 4) -- who was the biggest loser out of David Brown, Rachel Frederickson and Bobby Saleem?
Before the final weigh-in, contestant Ruben Studdard reminded us all why he's an "American Idol" winner, as he performed a lovely R&B ballad about following your dreams. We love you, smaller-velvet-teddy-bear Ruben.
When it was time to climb the scale, Bobby went from 358 pounds to 170 pounds, which is a loss of 188 pounds and a percentage of 52.5 percent. Rachel went from 260 pounds to 105 pounds, which is a loss of 155 pounds or 59.6 percent. Holy crap.
The last one is David, who went from 409 pounds to 187, which means he lost 222 pounds or 54.3 percent, which is not enough to beat Rachel. Rachel Frederickson is your "Biggest Loser" for Season 15.

“I cannae change the laws of physics, Cap’n!”
If you know your Star Trek, you’ll know this line spoken by the imitable Montgomery Scott, Chief Engineer of the original Starship Enterprise. Hailed by many as a miracle worker getting the Enterprise (and even the Enterprise-d in The Next Generation) out of trouble spots, especially after being fired upon by Klingons and Romulans.
But other than well known theoretical physics possibilities, have you ever wondered how much else is possible and what was made up? What was true to all the sci-babble of Quantum Mechanics and String Theory and what was completely impossible?
Would you believe that there are multiple instances of the Trek writers basically writing themselves into a hole only to resort to a MacGuffin device or trick to get the characters we know and love to safety (or to put them in danger to...

Over the course of more than seven hundred television episodes and twelve movies — made over the course of half a century (and counting) — the Star Trek franchise has covered a lot of narrative ground. We’ve watched as our favorite characters have grown over the course of years, even decades. We’ve witnessed the founding and collapse of galactic empires. And we’ve seen ideas that began as throw-away lines in one episode become part of a rich and complex backstory in later installments.
However, a franchise doesn’t endure for fifty years without having to abandon a few great storylines along the way. In the following list, we’ll look at five storylines that were unexpectedly dropped before they reached a conclusion, try and explain why they weren’t continued, and point out how the different ways they found resolution in a variety of (non-canon) Star Trek novels,...

If Ruben Studdard ends the year known as a loser, that will be fine with him.
The Season 2 "American Idol" winner is among the new contestants vying to drop the most pounds as Season 15 of NBC's weight-loss competition "The Biggest Loser" starts Tuesday, Oct. 15. "Second Chances" is the theme, and Studdard definitely sees the show being that for him.
"It's one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences I've had in a very long time," he says to Zap2it. "It's very challenging to be asked to work as hard as we're working, and also to be cut off from the world, so to speak. Review James Hunt 4 Oct 2013 - 07:00
Send in the clones... James' Tng season 2 look-back arrives at a poorly developed immigration parable.
This review contains spoilers.
2.17 Up the Long Ladder
The Enterprise receives a distress call from planet Bringloid V, the location of a centuries-old (and long-forgotten) Earth colony, founded by one half of the crew of the SS Mariposa. The Bringloidi are space-farmers following a luddite/Amish-style philosophy rejecting technology-reliant living, but luckily they had a somewhat advanced distress probe lying around in case things got difficult. And that's exactly what happened, because their planet is now about to be destroyed by solar activity.
After sending Riker to meet them (off camera) Picard happily agrees to evacuate the Bringloidi colonists and take them to a nearby starbase, leading to a hilarious scene where O'Brien transports a bunch of people, two sheep, a goat and a chicken onto the Enterprise only...

The Olympic cyclist lived through the genocide and many of his family were killed. Now his achievements are helping to change the way the world views Rwanda – and how it sees itself
There have been a lot of odd moments in Adrien Niyonshuti's life recently. Most of them started when a group of Americans arrived in Rwanda and put on a bicycle race in September 2006. Adrien, a 19-year-old student, won and, as his prize, he was allowed to keep the mountain bike he had borrowed from the visitors for the event. It was a Schwinn, nothing that special by western standards, but exponentially more advanced than anything little, landlocked Rwanda – about the size of Wales but with four times as many inhabitants – had ever seen. He actually didn't ride it very much. No one else in the country had a mountain bike to go with him, so it was dull on his own.

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes the sci-fi action adventure “Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim.” When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. Trailer for “Second Chances” below To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are synched via a neural bridge, called “The Drift.” But as the enemy grows more powerful with each attack, even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes’a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)?who are teamed to drive a seemingly obsolete Jaeger.

With Alec’s help, Kiera hopes to preserve the past and find a way back to the future and reunite with her family. But at the start of this season, we find out that it was Sadler from the future (played by William B. Davis) who purposely selected Kiera and Liber8 to change history and to make sure a world where corporations run the world does not exist. We spoke with Knudsen in great length about the new season,...

It’s been another upfront where projects that had been rejected in the past got to shine. Of the four new scripted series showcased at the Turner upfront presentation today, three had been previously developed at other networks. That includes David Baldacci/Shane Brennan’s TNT drama King And Maxwell, which was at CBS; Howard Gordon/Jeffrey Nachmanoff’s TNT drama Legends, which was at NBC; and Bill Lawrence/Greg Malins TBS comedy Ground Floor, which was at CBS. Upfronts 2012: The Year Of Underdogs, Comebacks & Second Chances Later today at the CBS upfront presentation, the network unveiled We Are Men, a new single-camera comedy series from writer Rob Greenberg, who had written the pilot years ago. A number of times CBS had asked him to convert it to multi-camera. He didn’t. It finally was picked up as Greenberg’s original single-camera vision last summer but almost died when...

Cut to over two decades later: Norman would once again find himself free, with the possibility of redemption for his past crimes. Syfy's "Being Human" gives fans a whole new perspective on what it is to be human. Viewers may have never expected that combining a vampire, werewolf, and ghost would lead to such a deep look into the human soul.
In this last installment of our exclusive interviews for the show's third season return, we talk with co-star Sam Huntington on what lies ahead for the werewolf turned human, Josh Levison.

Last week, AMC officially ordered a third season of The Killing, resurrecting a show it had declared canceled last summer. Second chances for misfit series aren't uncommon these days, though usually such resuscitations are conducted by another outlet (Buffy, Cougar Town, Southland) rather than the rare occasions when a show is revived by the network that first did the, er, killing (Family Guy). But while there had been rumors of a third season of The Killing since October, the AMC announcement was still somewhat surprising: The series didn't seem to possess the sort of impassioned fan base usually associated with such revivals and in fact had attracted a very loud hate-watching contingent. As Vulture commenter (and 30 Rock fan) "Moonvest" succinctly summed up, "So many beloved shows that fans fought so hard to bring back, and The Killing gets a second life? Veronica Mars fans must be rioting in the...

In the spring, former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner appears on USA Network as host of "The Moment," a reality series in which people who had to let go of a cherished ambition get a second chance at achieving their dreams.
Second chances are something Warner knows about. After remaining undrafted in 1994, he got to try out for the Green Bay Packers' training camp that same year, but was released before the beginning of the regular season. Told he wasn't ready to throw the ball in the NFL, Warner moved in with his in-laws and got a night job stocking shelves at a grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for $5.50 an hour.
He later went to work for his alma mater, the University of Northern Iowa, as an assistant coach. When no NFL team wanted him, Warner then found success in the Arena Football League, which lead to a failed tryout invitation from the Chicago Bears.

America's Next Top Model: Four Theme Ideas for Future Cycles
After cycle 16 of America's Next Top Model, Aunt Tyra announced that there'd be no more "normal cycles", opting instead to center each successive round of modeling hi-jinx around a particular theme. First came the all-star cycle, which found Top Model verging on self-parody and ended with one of the most confounding reality finales I've ever seen, with the much improved British Invasion cycle following last February. With the college edition set to premiere soon, I thought that I'd offer up the Haus of TyTy Baby a few suggestions of themes for future cycles, should the show reach its 20th birthday in the near future.
1. Plus-size
Even though we have a "plus girl" winner in the annals of Top Model history (cycle 10's Whitney), nobody's going to mistake the show for being a haven for those that may not fit the sample clothes.

Second chances and soccer moms
When Hollywood needs a leading man seeking redemption, it's starting to look no further than Gerard Butler. After playing a former biker gang member turned preacher as he did in last year's Machine Gun Preacher, Butler will next play a veteran big wave surfer who trains a younger novice in Chasing Mavericks and then a former soccer pro looking to win back his family in Playing For Keeps (formerly Playing the Field). The latter won't be out until December, and finally has its first trailer online.
The dramedy, directed Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds), sees Butler as George Dryer, a former soccer player whose play off the field has lost him a wife (Total Recall's Jessica Biel) and his son (The Walking Dead's Noah Lomax). When Dryer moves to Virginia to coach his son's soccer team and get his life back together,...

Multicamera sitcoms hit a milestone last month when two freshmen, NBC’s Whitney and ABC’s Last Man Standing, were renewed for a second season. It marked the first time a freshman multicamera comedy on a broadcast network other than CBS has made it to Season 2 in five years, since ‘Til Death was awarded a second season on Fox in 2007. Overall, three freshman multicamera comedies, including CBS breakout 2 Broke Girls, went to a second the season, the most in a decade. But despite that major achievement, multicamera comedies lost ground as the single-camera/multicamera divide between CBS and the rest of the broadcast networks deepened this upfront. Related: Upfronts 2012: The Year Of Underdogs, Comebacks & Second Chances ABC, NBC and Fox ordered a combined 14 new comedy series this year, the same as last year, but the number of multicamera comedies dropped by more than half. Of the 14, 5 or 36% were multicamera last year.
