From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.
After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.
But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

The CBS hit show, NCIS, has been hit with a divorce. One of their beloved stars‘ wife has filed for a divorce from her husband. This happened after the couple had been married for over 18 years.
Who Is Carrie James Murray?
Carrie James Murray is the wife of the NCIS star. Seeing she is not a Hollywood staple, having never appeared in either television or in movies, little is known about her. Before her marriage, it is unlikely anyone other than her friends and family had ever heard of her.
Carrie James Murray has been reported as having a bachelor’s degree in social work. She earned her degree from San Francisco State University from 1995 to 1999. She returned to college in 2002. It was then when she earned her master’s degree from Antioch University in Los Angeles, California. Her master’s degree is in “education leadership.”
The NCIS wife is the mother of two.

If you are concerned that the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus won’t be back for 2024’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, rest assured that they are. Do you have what it takes to be this year’s Winifred, Mary, or Sarah?
Are there any actors out there? Maybe you’ve always wanted to break into the business. Then Disney Careers is where you should head next! The Mouse is auditioning for all three sisters starting on April 12!
Unlike a lot of other casting calls we’ve seen for Disney theme park and cruise ship productions, the requirements for the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular are pretty simple:
You must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the US, and you can’t be a cast member of the Disney College Program.
That’s it!
The auditions for the show don’t require you to appear in person.

Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy, the stars of “Happiest Season,” are reunited for short film “Decades of Confusion,” which is basically a commercial for fashion brand Loewe. If only Plaza could spell it.
It ain’t your average retail ad: “Black Mirror” director Ally Pankiw directed the short that was penned by “Good Grief” and “Schitt’s Creek” star Levy.
Plaza stars as a contestant in a spelling bee that spans each decade from 1971 to the present day. Levy is the (frustrated) judge. Plaza may not be able to spell “Loewe”, but she sure can put together an outfit from the fashion house. Plaza combs the Loewe archives to transform into a new character for the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000s…
“Wigs, iconic looks from the Loewe archive, and wrong answers — from 1971 to present day,” the tagline reads.
Plaza is next set to star in Ethan Coen’s dark comedy “Honey Don’t!...

An instant success, the movie-themed burger joint boasted an array of production made and screen-used memorabilia on display throughout the restaurant. The New York Times headline the following day read, “Fantasy For the Price of a Burger.” Each Planet Hollywood location served as a mini-museum devoted to the movies and the investors behind the venture included a who’s who of 90s stars, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. There are many lessons to be gleaned from Season Two of The Traitors, Peacock’s smash hit reality TV competition based on the parlor game Mafia: 1) that you should never drink from an ominous-looking rusty chalice, particularly if it has been offered to you by a notoriously cutthroat former Survivor contestant; 2) that virtually everyone looks cool in emerald-green velvet cloaks; and 3) that Peacock has an insanely high budget for both breakfast pastries and Alan Cumming’s headgear.

At the beginning of its third season, "Star Trek: Discovery" went through something of a soft reboot, with fans often debating about what worked and what did not. Thanks to a complex season-two story about a malevolent machine intelligence, the U.S.S. Discovery was forced through a portal in time, depositing it in the year 3188, about 900 from their starting point. The crew of the Discovery found the future to be bitter and broken. It seems a galaxy-wide cataclysm — nicknamed The Burn — destroyed every active starship a few centuries earlier. The last remaining scraps of the Federation went into hiding while a vicious crime syndicate, the Emerald Chain, rose to power in its absence. The Discovery, equipped with now-ancient technology, had to fight the Emerald Chain, locate the Federation, and attempt to help a galaxy they didn't understand.

15 years ago Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama joined forced to deliver "Jennifer's Body," a genuine cult classic that went from mismarketed box office failure maligned by critics who didn't understand its brilliance, to the reclaimed favorite that became one of the selling points in the marketing for "Lisa Frankenstein." Cody returns to the teen horror comedy space alongside Zelda Williams (in her feature directorial debut) with a zany, heartfelt, and unapologetically odd story about a particularly peculiar high school outcast named Lisa (Kathryn Newton) who goes on a murderous adventure with the reanimated corpse of a young man — whose grave she hangs out at — in search of new limbs, a sense of autonomy, and maybe even love.
Set against the backdrop of the candy-coated neon bubblegum of the 1980s, "Lisa Frankenstein" makes no qualms about being for weirdos, and by weirdos. It's the resulting lovechild of a raucous orgy between "Edward Scissorhands,...

Thora Birch has been performing in Hollywood since she was just a tiny tyke, famously playing Dani Dennison in the cult Halloween classic "Hocus Pocus," where she becomes the target of the malevolent Sanderson sisters. But although one of her most memorable roles came in 1993, when she was just 11 years old, that was far from the end of her career as an actress. Birch has continued to work in the industry, lending her talents to television series, films, music videos, and even podcasts over the years.
Birch's career has been defined by a few standout performances in films that captured the imaginations of audiences everywhere, but one of the most inspiring aspects of her time in Hollywood is that whenever she has been in danger of being completely subsumed by these larger-than-life roles, she shifts gears, navigating a career as a performer on her own terms. Arriving a whopping 26 years after 1997’s cult-favorite Nickelodeon comedy, “Good Burger 2” fits the streaming-era trend in which audiences seek a nostalgia bump reconnecting with old favorites, like “Coming to America” or “Hocus Pocus” — not exactly classics so much as modest pleasures from more innocent times. In this obnoxiously unfunny followup from Paramount+, stars Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson return as hapless fast food employees. To update the story to 2023, director Phil Traill and screenwriters Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert add a few new characters and a tiresome AI plot, winding up with a Thanksgiving diversion that functions just fine playing in the background as families gather for their holiday meals.
The hook here is presumably a Kenan and Kel reunion, which the movie serves up without delay: Ed (Mitchell) now owns the Good Burger restaurant, where he serves as a benevolent boss, treating his employees with empathy while never...

A B-movie actor wrote an infamous song for Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii. She tried to write a title song for the film, but that never happened. Regardless, she gained some celebrity as her films became infamous.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Blue Hawaii’ includes a song by director Ed Wood’s girlfriend
Dolores Fuller was an actor who had a relationship with Ed Wood, the director of Plan 9 from Outer Space. That film is widely considered one of the worst movies ever made, though it has a strong cult following among people who like camp classics. Fuller appeared in secondary roles in some of Wood’s films, such as Glen or Glenda and Bride of the Monster.
During an interview with Elvis Australia, Fuller discussed her songwriting career. “Well I have to attribute my break in getting into songwriting for [movie producer] Hal Wallis,” she said. “He was an old friend of mine,...

Spyder Dobrofsky is probably not a name you would expect to see credited on Christmas-themed TV movies, but that’s exactly how Dobrofsky got started out, working on the scripts for such flicks as The Housewives of the North Pole and One Christmas Wish, as well as Mom’s Day Away. When he made his feature directorial debut, it was on a movie called Spiral, which was something you’d expect to see a Spyder credited with: a mystery thriller. Now Deadline has broken the news that Dobrofsky is working on a holiday horror movie called Down Below… and he has assembled a solid cast for the project. The legendary Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) stars alongside Bai Ling (The Crow), Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect), and Doug Jones, who is best known for his creature (or heavily made up) performances in films like The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Hocus Pocus.

Writer Jen D’Angelo got her start working on episodes of shows Workaholics, Cougar Town, and Young Rock, and now she’s on a streak of successfully getting her feature scripts brought to the screen. She wrote the long-awaited sequel Hocus Pocus 2, the time travel slasher Totally Killer, and the newly released comedy Quiz Lady – and next on her to-do list is Hocus Pocus 3. D’Angelo has previously teased that the new sequel could bring Hannah Waddingham back as her Hocus Pocus 2 character The Witch Mother, and during an interview with Collider she also gave a hint as to what could bring the Sanderson Sisters back into action, seeking revenge against Salem.
D’Angelo said, “I have my theories about what we could see (in Hocus Pocus 3), and what things mean and where we could take these characters. It’s interesting to be like, ‘Now we have even...

Spooky Season is here, and Halloween is only a few hours away! That means that the Sanderson Sisters have resurrected themselves in our homes for another season of merriment and Hocus Pocus.
Disney’s 1993 movie has become the classic choice for Halloween over the years, so much so that it got a long-awaited sequel in 2022 and a third movie is already in the works!
The story is appropriately eerie and beguiling, and the cast, centered around the three witches Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, is fantastic.
Hocus Pocus‘ Sanderson Sisters had iconic careers when they joined the movie, but the rest of the cast is equally talented. Over the years, they have all amassed impressive fortunes while starring in Hollywood projects.
In honor Halloween 2023 and the movie’s 30th anniversary, we did some digging to see how much each of the movie’s stars are worth in...

Halloween is the time for horror movies: for spine-tingling fright fests filled with blood, gore, and screams. At least, that’s the case for those of us who are child-free and have a pal or two for a late night horror binge or two over the course of October.
But for parents, Halloween is a time for the kiddos, for trick-or-treating and family costume parties and some family bonding movie nights. But what should you watch on the movie night when your kids are little? It can be difficult to find a movie appropriate for the season that doesn’t contain any scares that would make it unwatchable for a child; just because the movies are named “Halloween” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s what you should be watching on Halloween.
Streaming luckily has a mountain of family-friendly options to choose from this Halloween season, with almost every streamer having...

Mere mortals have been fascinated by witchcraft for hundreds of years, and the film industry has taken note, with witch-themed movies going back more than 100 years.
In 1922, the silent partly documentary-style Swedish film “Haxan” sought to understand the roots and misunderstandings of witchcraft, and the mania that surrounded the witch hunts. Controversial at the time, it is now considered one of the most influential of the early horror films. Less than 20 years later, Margaret Hamilton would make the Wicked Witch the standard for evil witches, and help make “The Wizard of Oz” a timeless classic.

Hocus Pocus is not the kind of movie that needs particularly deep lore; nevertheless, the writer of the next sequel promises the backstory we didn’t know we wanted.
“Jen D’Angelo, the writer of Hocus Pocus 2… has now—now that the WGA writers strike is over—made it clear that the already-promised Hocus Pocus 3 is well on its way toward answering all these black flame candle-based burning questions, promising that its already announced sequel, while still in the story phase, is trucking along, and that “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch.”

Disney announced earlier this year that Hocus Pocus 3 is definitely happening, with Anne Fletcher (Hocus Pocus 2) returning to direct and Jen D’Angelo back to write the script.
But what’s the status on Hocus Pocus 3, now that we’re one year removed from the premiere of Hocus Pocus 2? D’Angelo provides a fresh update to Entertainment Weekly.
“We’re still in the story phase, we’re still working on it. We’ve been working on some ideas, and it’s been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore,” D’Angelo tells the outlet. She continues, “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch.”

Halloween is a night of fanciful terrors, its macabre machinations ticking, turning, clicking and clacking inside of its youthful acolytes’ imaginations as it ushers in the one day a year where life, death and everything in between is allowed to stalk the moonlit streets. There are a multitude of October tales that attempt to capture the holiday’s uncanny spirit, but few stories manage to embody the enigmatical ghostliness of Halloween’s mystifying soul more completely than Ray Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree (1993).
Initially pitched as an animated film in the late 1960s, Ray Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree was first published as a novel in 1973. It would take another 20 years to see Bradbury’s story realized on screen due in large part to the friendship, dedication and artistic prowess of writer and producer David Kirschner. It took nearly three decades, but the highly anticipated "Hocus Pocus" sequel finally arrived last year, just in time for Halloween. But there's even more good news for longtime fans of the spooky franchise: a third movie is officially in the works at Disney. That's right, Walt Disney Pictures president Sean Bailey shared the announcement himself in a New York Times profile published on June 4.
The publication noted that "Hocus Pocus 3" is, indeed, happening, while Bailey discussed the 50-plus movies in development and production at the company - which include upcoming live-action versions of "Moana" and "Lilo and Stitch."
No other details about the third "Hocus Pocus" were revealed at the time, including whether or not all the Sanderson sisters - Winnie (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy), and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) - will return to reprise their roles. However, screenwriter Jen D'Angelo dropped some hints in an October interview with Entertainment Weekly,...

Disney confirmed in June that a third “Hocus Pocus” movie was in development. Now, screenwriter Jen D’Angelo has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the next Sanderson sisters tale is still in the story development phase following the end of the WGA strike.

Let’s just be honest: being scared isn’t fun. At least, not for everyone. So entering Halloween — aka “spooky season” — can be pretty hard, especially when it comes to finding movies to watch. Well, it’s a good thing you’re here.
Because the thing is, Halloween movies are a core piece of celebrating the holiday. You get together with friends, you break into the candy early, turn off all the lights and get cozy for the night. But if you’re a big ol’ scaredy cat (like this writer is more than secure enough to admit she is), those nights are significantly harder.
So, we went ahead and rounded up 13 of the best Halloween movies that you’ll be guaranteed to still get a good, nightmare-free sleep after.

Max Dennison, Dani Dennison, Allison Watts, and Thackery Binx made a triumphant return to Salem last weekend, but it wasn’t the Sanderson Sisters who brought them together in the historic Massachusetts town this time. Actors Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, and Jason Marsden commemorated the Hocus Pocus 30th anniversary with an celebration dubbed It’s Just a Buncha Halloween.
“It exceeded my expectations!” exclaimed Marsden of the festivities, which consisted of a costume party, a meet and greet, and a tour of the filming locations. “Not to present false modesty, I understand how popular this project is, but I never expected the amount of people to flock to the party and to wait out in the rain for hours on end just to say hello to us. What made it all worthwhile was the energy by the local Salemites. It really, really enhanced the experience for us.”

Like so many before and after him, Frank Laloggia had a hard time when he first started out in the film business. Yet after booking several roles as an actor, the Rochester native seemed to finally catch his big break. He had been given the chance to write and direct a feature film. Unfortunately, Laloggia’s disillusionment with the industry set in while working on 1981’s Fear No Evil. Severe studio interference was the main cause of his disappointment, and as a result, Laloggia took an extended break from filmmaking. However, the time off between his debut and Lady in White proved to be beneficial; Laloggia returned from his long leave with what many regard as the best film of his career.
With a story partly based on a well-known urban legend from the director’s neck of the woods, it was understandable when people assumed Laloggia’s sophomore film...

The trembling fear I endured when Carly Beth slid on that terrifying green mask still lingers with me even now. And I’ll never forget the chills I felt running down my spine when Sarah launched into “Come Little Children” or the penetrating gaze of Kalabar that seemed to cut into my soul. These images provoked something in me, conspiring to lure me into horror – and I’ve never left. I might be 30-something now, but I can still enjoy nice little gateway horror movies, especially when they’re as compelling as the Halloween-set Cobweb and The Curse of Bridge Hollow.
In Cobweb, screenwriter Chris Thomas Devlin stages an epically creepy story about a young boy named Peter (Woody Norman), whose parents Carol (Lizzy Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr) rule with a stringent hand.

30 years after its original release, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is, once again, doing big business at the box office. The unquestioned multi-holiday classic -- as both a Halloween movie and a Christmas movie -- was re-released by Disney in more than 1,600 theaters over the weekend in honor of its 30th anniversary. Audiences turned up in a big way as the film made its way into the top five on the domestic charts.
Director Henry Selick's "Nightmare Before Christmas" landed at number five on the charts for the weekend with a $4.1 million haul, per The Numbers. That put it ahead of "Saw X" ($3.58 million) and behind "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie" ($4.45 million), both of which were in their fourth weekends. Meanwhile, the Tim Burton-produced claymation classic originally hit theaters in limited release on October 13, 1993. The movie's running global total now stands at $95.3 million and counting. Depending on how well this re-release goes,...

Every year when the weather gets cooler and spooky season begins, the Sanderson Sisters resurrect themselves for another season of merriment and Hocus Pocus.
Disney’s 1993 movie has become the classic choice for Halloween over the years, so much so that it got a long-awaited sequel in 2022.
The story is appropriately eerie and beguiling, and the cast, centered around the three witches Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, is fantastic.
Of course, the three stars had iconic careers when they joined the movie, but the rest of the cast is equally talented. Over the years, they have amassed impressive fortunes while starring in Hollywood pictures.
In honor of the approach of Halloween and the movie’s 30th anniversary, we did some digging to see how much each of the movie’s stars are worth in 2023! The top earners have estimated worths over $200 million, and there’s a $50 million...

It’s been 30 years since Winifred Sanderson and her sisters put a spell on fans, and “Hocus Pocus” remains a Halloween classic. So, what are the witchy women up to these days? What about the kids they tormented? Well, at least when it comes to the latter, they aren’t kids anymore.
In fact, you can catch most of them at fan conventions across the country when they aren’t on-screen. Vinessa Shaw, Omri Katz, Thora Birch and Jason Marsden have reunited more than a few times at events in the last few years, as “Hocus Pocus” found its cult following later in its life cycle.
As for the Sanderson sisters, well, they’re obviously still hard at work in Hollywood too. In fact, they just reunited last year for “Hocus Pocus 2” on Disney+.
You can see what the ‘Hocus Pocus” cast looks like now in the photos below.

Hocus Pocus fans were ecstatic when Disney released a long-awaited sequel to the classic last year, but one key player was missing: original director Kenny Ortega.
Kenny helmed the 1993 classic alongside stars Mette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. However, Anne Fletcher took over directing duties for the sequel.
He opened up about the project and his thoughts on being replaced in a new interview.

“No, they did not approach me to direct it, which was disappointing, but, of course, in the end, I was very supportive, wanting for Bette, Kathy, and Sarah to have another crack at it,” the director told EW. “You let go of things, you surrender, you move on, you don’t hold on, you don’t have ownership. I would’ve loved to have gone back and play again, but that I didn’t is okay.

“Back home, they would have put me in jail for what I’m doing. But out here? They’re giving me awards” – Robert De Niro’s Sam Rothstein, Casino.
Martin Scorsese reminds me a lot of the late Wes Craven. Both of them with such kind demeanors that are in paradox to the horrors of the art they create. Now, in no way am I so naïve as to think people who make horror films are anything like their creations. I’m not one of those Church Moms on the local news suggesting Satan is entering our homes via Hocus Pocus on Disney Plus. Still yet, these are the last two men I’d ever pick out of a line up as the creators of their own work.
The two are seen oppositely based on the genres they work in but Scorsese is a horror director in his own right.
