If you’re like us here at Reel Action, you probably love martial arts movies. And if you love martial arts movies, chances are, you are a fan of Mark Dacascos. And if you’re a fan of Mark Dacascos, then you probably know the movie, Only the Strong. Only the Strong is the best Jean-Claude Van Damme movie that Van Damme never starred in. In fact, if you look at the director’s filmography, he had a successful collaboration streak with Jcvd that led to Only the Strong. However, the movie actually fares better without him, because it features a star-making turn by the unanimously perceived underrated martial arts actor Mark Dacascos. Add in the teacher-savior plot and an introduction to a unique brand of martial art and you have an incredibly fun way to spend 90 minutes. We talk Only the Strong on this entry of Reel Action.

Update, with video: Whoopi Goldberg has made no secret in recent years of people she’d like to cast in her long-in-the-works Sister Act 3 project, from original Sister costars Jenifer Lewis and Kathy Najimy to Jimmy Fallon, Charlamagne Tha God, Lizzo, Keke Palmer, and Nicki Minaj, and today she added another old friend to the list: Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Ralph, who appeared in 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, seemed delighted if perhaps too overwhelmed with emotion to give an official answer when, during an appearance on today’s The View, Goldberg invited the Abbott Elementary star to take part in both a planned View reunion of Sister Act vets and the hoped-for second sequel to the original 1992 comedy.
“You know, we’re in the process of putting together 3,” Goldberg said toward the end of Ralph’s visit. “Will you come be part of it, whatever it is?...

Bette Midler is crediting divine intervention for turning down “Sister Act.”
The multi-hyphenate talent revealed that she said no to starring in the 1992 musical comedy about a woman who pretends to be a nun while in the witness protection program. Whoopi Goldberg was instead cast in the lead role and later went on to star in its 1993 sequel “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.”
“I turned them down,” Midler told Variety. “They came to me with ‘Sister Act’ and I said, ‘My fans don’t want to see me in a wimple.’ Can you believe that? How off the wall is that? How crazy is that?”
She continued, “Jeffrey Katzenberg called me every day, ‘Please, please.’ I stood my ground because I really was afraid of the costume. Isn’t that amazing? I can wear anything but a nun’s habit?”

Whoopi Goldberg has shared an update on the status of Sister Act 3, as well as her desire to have Maggie Smith return in a central role.
The actor and comedian appeared on Friday’s (6 January) edition of Loose Women in a special interview with panellist Judi Love.
Goldberg spoke about a variety of topics, including the release of her new film Till, based on the true story of the racist killing of 14-year-old Emmett Till in the US in 1955.
She also discussed the long-discussed third film in the Sister Act series, and whether any new developments had taken place.
In Goldberg’s view, an essential part of whether the movie gets made depends on whether co-star Maggie Smith is willing to take part.
She explained: “You know, one of the things that I want to make sure I do while I'm here is… I want to let Maggie Smith...

Sound the horns, set off the fireworks! "Sister Act 3" is approaching! That's right, everyone's wildest movie dream seems to finally be coming true: Whoopi Goldberg will don the habit once again.
"Sister Act" is the story of a Reno lounge singer who gets put into witness protection in a San Francisco nunnery. This absurd and seemingly trite fish out of water setup actually lends itself to a surprisingly funny and heartfelt movie. Audiences agreed, as "Sister Act" was one of the most successful comedies of the '90s, spawning a sequel just one year later and even a Broadway show.
Now, after a couple of apparent false starts, it appears a new addition to the "Sister Act" franchise is on its way, more than twenty years after the original film. While previous rumors indicated that Goldberg wouldn't be involved, it seems that this time she is fully on board...

Sister Act 3: Whoopi Goldberg reveals cast wishlist as she is set to be back in black in a new entry
It’s time to get back in the habit…again! Deadline gives us the lowdown on the final chapter in the Sister Act trilogy. Whoopi Goldberg is, of course, slated to reprise her role as Sister Mary Clarence, and this time, she’s been dropping some names of who she’d like to join the sisterhood with her. Whoopi was last seen in her popular role in the 1993 film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, which featured an ensemble of teen cast members which included a pre-music breakout Lauryn Hill and a pre-fame Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Goldberg was recently on the Charlamagne Tha God Comedy Central show, Hell of a Week when she spoke about the new ensemble she’d like to assemble for this entry. “I want everybody,” Goldberg said when asked about casting. “I want as many people who want to have some fun because I really,...

Sheryl Lee Ralph's acceptance-speech song at this year's Emmys is still ringing in our ears. After taking home the outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series award for her role as Barbara Howard on Quinta Brunson's "Abbott Elementary," Ralph won the hearts of thousands of viewers with her empowering speech. With season two of the elementary-school series set to premiere on Sept. 21, we decided to take a look back at Ralph's best TV and movie roles, from "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" (1993) to her starring role as Dee on "Moesha" opposite Brandy.
Ralph began her acting career on stage and earned her first nomination for a Tony Award for best actress in a musical in 1982 for her role as Deena Jones in "Dreamgirls." After releasing her first and only album, "In the Evening," in 1984, Ralph continued to pursue acting, taking on roles alongside big names like Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy.

After over four decades in the industry, Sheryl Lee Ralph finally got her well-deserved flowers Monday night with her first-ever Emmy win. The "Abbott Elementary" star is the 2022 outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series winner for her role as no-nonsense veteran teacher Barbara Howard in Quinta Brunson's critically acclaimed, record-breaking ABC sitcom - an overdue feat that makes Ralph only the second Black woman in Emmys history to secure the category title (Jackée Harry was the first in 1987).
Ralph made her victory an even more show-stopping moment through her emotional acceptance speech on Sept. 12, tearfully singing "Endangered Species" by Dianne Reeves - a powerful anthem she said she's been turning to for years. "I am an endangered species," she belted out loudly and proudly to the audience. "But I sing no victim's song. I am a woman, I am an artist. And I know where my voice belongs." Indeed,...

“Great actors fall into darkness backwards,” Bill Duke likes to say, quoting an early teacher of his who suggested that the leap of faith required for someone to become the person they imagine in their mind requires a sense of self-belief powerful enough to overcome their fear of the unknown. Not only has Duke consistently done that over the course of the actor-director’s 40-plus-year career, he’s done it with an unparalleled degree of excellence and grace.
While cinephiles and casual fans alike may be familiar with Duke’s performances in films like “Predator” and “Menace II Society,” few recognize the full impact of his contributions behind the camera during the ’90s, when he hit his stride with a series of major and enduring work that range from “A Rage in Harlem” and the masterful neo-noir “Deep Cover” to the beloved crowdpleaser “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

Jonathan Kinloch, the band’s former manager, wrote on Facebook: “We were blessed and had a great time as a family. A huge part of what made it fun, was because of Roderick ‘Pooh’ Clark. He was the serious member, who made sure that the guys together worked hard. But also, we’re going to have a fun time as teenagers!”
“Pooh was the most athletic of them all,” said Hi-Five’s musical director Martinez Little on his Facebook page. “In basketball he could stand right under the basket and jump straight up and dunk the ball. Our play fights and Super Soaker battles were epic.

This week Comedy Central’s “Broad City” parodied the climactic restaurant scene from “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and Ilana’s hilarious uncovering of Abbi’s double life unraveled almost identically to Robin Williams’ big reveal as a cross-dressing babysitter in the 1993 film. “Broad City” leaves no stone unturned in the scene scripting Ilana’s big meltdown word for word from Sally Field’s original freakout. Mara Wilson, Williams’ onscreen daughter in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” even appears in the episode as Abbi and Ilana’s waitress. This homage aired just weeks after the series spoofed the final performance from “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” featuring a cameo from none other than Whoopi Goldberg herself. These parodies are reminiscent of other classic homages throughout the years. Here are 11 other unforgettable film and television parodies. “Boy Meets World”Much of Season 5 of “Boy Meets World” hinged on the coupling, breakup, and reunion of Cory...

Another trip to the convent with Disney's Sister Act series is in the works as the Mouse House has hired screenwriters Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah (10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde) to take on a remake of the popular comedy. Allison Shearmur (March's Cinderella) will produce. The original film starred Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg as entertainer Deloris Van Cartier, who goes into hiding with a group of nuns in a San Francisco convent after she runs afoul with the mob. The film earned more than $231 million at the box office in 1992 and led to a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. A Broadway musical later followed, with Disney vet Alan Menken writing the music. The stage show netted 5 Tony nominations in 2011, including Best Musical. There's no word if Goldberg will be involved in the new film. THR...

We can already hear the “I’ll have nun of that!” jokes forming in the brains of people reading this, but it’s true: Disney is looking to make a new Sister Act.While The Hollywood Reporter calls it a remake, there’s still a chance this could turn into a second sequel to the 1992 smash hit music-crammed comedy that saw Whoopi Goldberg’s singer Deloris go into hiding in a convent after witnessing a mob crime. Though the studio acted quickly to crank out a sequel (1993’s Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit), the returns weren’t quite as impressive and the nascent franchise has been dormant on the big screen since then. It did, however, spawn a Tony-winning musical that played here in 2009 before transferring to Broadway in 2011. Now Disney feels that writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah – who have worked on the likes of Legally Blonde...

★★☆☆☆ Cashing in on the current craze for 'Grey pound'-targeted filmmaking - heralded by the success of The King's Speech (2010) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) - Song for Marion (2012) arrives boasting a robust cast and a supposedly heart-warming story about the celebration of life and the joys of spontaneity. Directed by Paul Andrew Williams, who here veers away from the darker, moodier qualities of previous films such as London to Brighton (2006), the film is an admirable attempt at bringing insight into the simultaneously tranquil and devastating effects of old age - yet becomes congested by sentimentality.
The remarkable Vanessa Redgrave stars as the titular Marion, a vivacious, spunky older woman whose terminal cancer doesn't stop her from attending and remaining a treasured member of her local choir, who - under the guidance of Elizabeth (Gemma Arterton) - go by the name The Oap'z [sic]. Lots of new faces join the “Smash” cast for its second season, including Broadway veteran Sheryl Lee Ralph. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ralph will play Jennifer Hudson’s mother on the show. Along with this new connection, Hudson and Ralph have a Dreamgirls connection, as Ralph played Dreamgirls’ Deena Jones on Broadway in 1981 and Hudson played Effie White in the film version in 2006. In addition to Dreamgirls, Ralph’s stage credits also include 2002′s “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and features “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.” On the small screen, her résumé includes “Hunter,” “Designing Women” and “Moesha.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ralph will guest star as Cynthia, [ Read More ]...

We can only imagine how excited Jennifer Hudson must be right now. Vulture has just learned exclusively that Sheryl Lee Ralph has been cast to play her mom on Smash. Ralph originated the role of Dreamgirls diva Deena Jones on Broadway (the part played by Beyonce in the 2006 film). But even more thrilling for J.Hud? Ralph also played the mother of Lauryn Hill’s character in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, the movie Hudson has publicly declared her all-time favorite film. Sweet! (And also: really???) Anyways, as previously reported, Hudson will be playing new Smash gal Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning star “who reached [her] Broadway dream but paid a price for it.” No word yet on what kind of mom Ralph’s character Cynthia will be, but it’s probably safe to rule out another Mama Rose-type, considering the Bernadette Peters of it all.

Let's just get this out of the way immediately: Joyful Noise does not look good. A trite set-up, hammy jokes, and a trailer that gives away not just the ending but pretty much every plot twist the movie has to offer, do not inspire confidence in me whatsoever. It looks like Sister Act without the snappy writing, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit without the snappy writing, or Sister Act 3: Stations of the Cross-dressing without the hilarious cases of mistaken identity. (Sorry, I couldn't think of a third movie involving church choirs there.) But the point is, I will see Joyful Noise, probably drunk, because it's a movie starring Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah. They obviously deserved much, much better than this movie, but hopefully the two can salvage something from the wreckage. I can't imagine they won't. You tell me: will this movie [...]...

After analyzing countless reviews on RottenTomatoes, Slate magazine found out that Chuck Norris is the worst-reviewed actor, Jennifer Love Hewitt is the worst-reviewed actress and Dennis Dugan is the worst-reviewed director in Hollywood. The magazine only counted films (not documentaries) made since 1985 and considered people who have made/starred in at least ten movies. It wasn't easy for Chuck Norris to take the top spot, the man had to consistently deliver movies that critics hated. But thanks to "The Delta Force" (20% fresh rating), "Missing in Action" (23% fresh rating), and Top Dog (0% fresh rating), the actor ended up with an average score of 18.4% fresh rating. Eddie Griffin wasn't far off with 24.1%. Jennifer Love Hewitt's climb to the bottom was helped by such films as "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" (7% fresh rating), "I know What You Did Last Summer" (35% fresh rating), "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer...

There may be no excuse for appearing in Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties or Braddock: Missing in Action III, but is this right?
She may have earned a Golden Globe nomination for her TV work last year – and he may have invented a special pair of jeans for kicking people with – but history is already starting to turn against Jennifer Love Hewitt and Chuck Norris. According to Slate's comprehensive new study of Rottentomatoes aggregates, they are rated the worst actress and actor to have worked since 1985.
On the surface, it doesn't look like there's much to disagree with. Jennifer Love Hewitt, for example, has never starred in a film that has received a Rottentomatoes score of over 60%. Instead she's been content to ping backwards and forwards in pieces of dreck as diverse as Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties.

The snarky statisticians over at online magazine Slate have named Jennifer Love Hewitt the worst actress since 1985. Action star Chuck Norris was named the worst actor. The editors chose from 2,700 directors and actors who have made ten or more films in the last 26 years. Why did they choose 1985 as the cut-off? The explanation is rather lengthy, but basically defines their era for modern films. Using Rotten Tomatoes' infamous "Tomatometer" rating system (where reviewers assign movies a numerical rating, with higher numbers being "fresh" and lower numbers being "rotten"), they calculated Love Hewitt as the worst actress. Her 18.9% overall rating comes from such "rotten" films as " Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit " (7% rating), " I Still Know What You Did Last Summer " (7% rating), and both " Garfield " movies (15% and 11%, respectively). The best actors? French actor Daniel Auteuil (86% overall rating) and Armenian-Canadian actress Arsinée Khanjian (84.7% overall rating). Haven't heard of them? Neither have we.
