Confession time: despite being a serious film buff, and preaching the gospel of physical media, I only recently upgraded to a 4K Blu-ray player. While I’ve been watching 4K for years on my Apple TV, I also upgraded my 4K TV to one with Dolby Vision built-in, and some of the results I’ve been seeing on restorations of my favourite movies have been blowing my mind. For those of you who maybe haven’t taken the plunge, here’s a list of five that have really knocked my socks off:
The Crow (1994)
Our man Tyler Nichols was so impressed with the transfer on the recent 4K disc that he devoted an entire column to it last week. For me, this was one of the first movies I opted to pick up, as it’s never really looked all that great on DVD or Blu-ray. I’ve been lucky...

Before digital tools allowed composers to simulate any instrument on a laptop, musical scores for TV were simple melodies performed by a handful of session musicians. The newer technology meant those musicians lost their jobs; so did the guy who transcribed the composer’s scores.
However: That doesn’t mean scores require fewer people, or became cheaper to produce.
Today, even the smallest TV shows employ full orchestras. Tech made things easier, but the cost to produce scores for film and TV has only increased. With greater possibilities, more advanced jobs replaced those that were lost.
That’s the analogy Matt Nix, showrunner for “Burn Notice” and the recent “True Lies,” used when describing the advent of artificial intelligence at the May 16 AI on the Lot summit at Los Angeles Center Studios. He rejected the idea that AI will become a pathway to low-cost filmmaking and TV production that uses...

Veteran actress Jamie Lee Curtis has had a plethora of movies to her name ever since starring in Hollywood from 1978’s horror film Halloween. With the actress starring mainly in horror films throughout her decades-long career, Lee Curtis is regarded as one of the scream queens of Hollywood.
Jamie Lee Curtis in a still from the Halloween franchise
Despite having quite an iconic career, Lee Curtis had her fair share of moments that she felt, were embarrassing for her. Most notably known for undressing in her 1983 film Trading Places, Lee Curtis revealed that she felt deeply embarrassed by that scene and would not do anything like that again!

Back in 2005, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith made a revolution in action movies, as it perfectly balanced between romantic plotline, fighting sequences and high-class comedy. And we’re not talking about its pop-cultural influence, as it established Pitt and Jolie's personal relationship that became a source of juicy gossip.
Surprisingly, 11 years before that, there was a movie, quite similar to it by its plot and style, but it’s obviously lesser known than Mr. & Mrs. Smith. However, some cinephiles claim it’s even better than the 2005 flick and that’s why it deserves more attention.
Its plot revolves around Harry Tasker, a U.S. government agent, who needs to pretend to be a salesman to protect his family. While his true occupation is forcing him to go through new dangerous challenges, his personal life prepares him for a struggle too.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace recently returned to theaters to celebrate its 25th anniversary, and while it was a real treat to see the first prequel movie on the big screen once again, some fans have brought up how different the film looks from its original release.
Of course, Star Wars fans are accustomed to the many changes the movies have undergone over the decades, and The Phantom Menace has not escaped unscathed. Throughout its history on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD, we’ve seen the addition of new scenes, altered dialogue, and the replacement of puppet Yoda with a CG version, but perhaps the most divisive change actually affects the entire movie — a very liberal application of Dnr (digital noise reduction).

Recently, I wrote an article about how Ron Howard’s Cocoon was hard to find in any format. It came out on DVD many years ago but went out of print and has never been issued on Blu-ray. You also can’t find it digitally on any platform. This is a perfect example of why you should always hang on to your physical media, as I’m lucky enough to own the now out-of-print DVD of that movie, and while it’s far from an ideal copy, it’s something.
But that got me thinking. What other movies are hard to find? I opened up the forum on Twitter, and I was shocked by how many prominent films aren’t available digitally and have gone out of print on disc, making them all the more precious for collectors. At the same time, there are some happy endings, such as Martin Campbell’s No Escape,...

Action romance is a tricky genre to master — it requires the right balance of heart and spectacle. But when done well, à la “True Lies” or “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” it will live on forever in the rewatch rotation.
Stunt coordinator-turned-director David Leitch has launched cars straight into the air and staged fight scenes that have had theaters erupting in thunderous cheers. His latest challenge, however, will be making the audience’s heart melt with “The Fall Guy,” in theaters now. Smartly, he cast Ryan Gosling, the living embodiment of a junior high schooler’s diary entry, to play the hero.
Adapted from the 1980s series, the Universal film follows down-at-his-heels action choreographer Colt Seavers (Gosling), who must unravel a treacherous mystery while on the set of the next big blockbuster. The movie happens to be directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt.

General Hospital fans tuned into Thursday’s (May 2) episode may have noticed something a little different about Aiden Webber; well, that’s because a brand new actor has taken over the role. Tristan Riggs, whose credits include Walker and True Lies, has taken over from Enzo De Angelis as Elizabeth Webber’s (Rebecca Herbst) son, Aiden. He made his first appearance in Thursday’s episode, and according to Soap Opera Digest, he will be playing Aiden moving forward in a permanent recasting. Aiden was born on-screen on July 19, 2010, as the son of Elizabeth and Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson). Seven actors have previously portrayed the character, including twins Adrian & Brett Ritter (2010-11) and Maximo & Finbar (2011), Titus Jackson (2011-12), Jason David, and De Angelis (2021-24). Riggs marks the eighth actor to take on the role. The switch comes after Aiden recently came out as gay to his mom. Riggs will inherit a...

“The Fall Guy” (Universal) opens in the U.S./Canada Friday — one of the most prestigious spots on the movie release calendar. Since “Iron Man” in 2008, and since Disney initiated the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012, the first weekend in May has marked the start of the summer movie season.
When MCU “Deadpool & Wolverine” left this date in favor of July 26, Universal grabbed it — and the expectations that come with it. As a result, there’s an unusually wide range of estimates for the domestic opening weekend: We hear everything from the high 20s to over $50 million, with consensus closer to $35 million or a bit more.
An opening weekend of $35 million-$40 million would be a big improvement over a disastrous April (where “Civil War” was the sole film to debut over $25 million), but that would be only the fifth-best opening of 2024. Historically, this date tops any opening gross and usually...

With films like The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick’s legacy will live on for centuries to come. During his life and even after his death in 1999, he’s widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers to have ever graced the film industry with his talent. But even a man of his caliber had to have been a fan of someone, and that “someone” for Stanley Kubrick was none other than James Cameron.
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980)
James Cameron has been responsible for helming some of the most unforgettable and successful films in Hollywood. Therefore, it makes sense that Stanley Kubrick would be in awe of some of his work, and the feeling was mutual between the directors. When James Cameron decided to give himself a birthday present by meeting Stanley Kubrick, he was shocked to learn just how much of a True Lies fan he was.

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?

Stanley Kubrick was a peculiar man and so it’s really no wonder that his list of favorite films is so diverse. There are works by Welles and Chaplin and Bergman, but he also dug White Men Can’t Jump and The Jerk. Kubrick, too, apparently took to True Lies – so much so that he sat director James Cameron down and asked just how he pulled it off.
Back in the ‘90s, James Cameron decided to give himself a special 40th birthday present: the chance to meet Stanley Kubrick. And so after he gave him a call, he finally did so, encountering the legendary director between Full Metal Jacket and what would be his final film a few years later, Eyes Wide Shut. But Cameron was in for a surprise, as Kubrick was less interested in expounding on the depths of 2001: A Space Odyssey or playing chess but rather...

Pop quiz hot shot: What’s the best action movie of the past 20 or 30 years that never received a cinematic sequel? Nope, it’s not Speed. Is it Wanted? Nobody? The Accountant? How about Knight and Day or American Made? While the latter comes from director Doug Liman, we’d argue that the correct answer is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman’s eminently watchable assassin thriller that continues to shine thanks to the explosive chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, two luminous movie stars who met and fell in love during production. Although the movie earned decent reviews and grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith never received an official sequel or cinematic spinoff and is often remembered for the juicy tabloid gossip surrounding its two superstars.
Yet, in 2024, a small-screen adaptation of Liman’s hit action flick has been produced by Amazon Prime Video,...

The film, for which Storyboard Media launched international sales during last year’s Cannes Film Market, is produced by Guy J. Louthan of Ransom Films with Rikin Shah serving as one of the executive producers.
An allegory of the gun crisis in the United States, “The Gun on Second Street” follows two Pittsburgh police partners and best friends who are called to an uneventful domestic violence dispute on Second Street. This quickly escalates to a violent scuffle as Officer Tj Meadows III accidentally shoots and kills his partner, Officer Kevin Cooper, with his backup gun. [Editor’s note: This list was originally published in January 2023. It has since been updated with new titles.]
Save for Tom Cruise and maybe Kevin Feige, no name carries more weight in the world of tentpole filmmaking than James Cameron.
In December 2022, more than a decade after the writer/director’s triumphant “Avatar” became the highest grossing movie of all time, Cameron’s sequel and visual effects marvel “Avatar: The Way of Water” provided a massive splash of ticket sales for a drought-ridden box office. It’s now the third highest grossing film of all time, and its run propped up theaters in what IndieWire’s Tom Brueggeman described as a good start to the 2023.
That’s standard fare for Cameron, of course. He first made box office history in 1997 with the epic historical fiction romance “Titanic”: a cinematic knockout that ran in theaters for nearly ten months and remains the fourth highest grossing movie ever made. He won Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Editing at the year’s Academy Awards.

Not long after reaching out to us, Harris sent a follow-up email with more comments:

The Fabelmans (2022), arguably Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie to date, had everyone talking. Starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale that’s loosely based on the director’s childhood and his early years as a film director.
However, Spielberg’s reluctance to delve into his family’s history stemmed from worries that his parents would suffer, so the project was dropped for twenty years. Regardless, with seven Oscar nominations upon its release, The Fabelmans has generated a lot of Oscar buzz.
James Cameron’s Avatar
Does that encourage other filmmakers to document their own life stories on screen? Well, the director of Avatar and Titanic, though, is not going to take that route. James Cameron remains surprisingly uninterested when it comes to sharing the story of his own journey to success on the big screen because he finds it “boring”.

James Cameron’s True Lies has long been regarded as a classic action-comedy, blending heart-pounding thrills with laugh-out-loud humor. With its recent release in stunning 4K resolution, this beloved film receives a visual upgrade that breathes new life into its explosive action sequences and vibrant cinematography.
Originally released in 1994, True Lies stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Harry Tasker, a seemingly ordinary computer salesman who leads a double life as a top-secret government agent. Tasker’s world is turned upside down when his wife, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, becomes unwittingly entangled in his espionage activities, leading to a series of high-octane adventures across the globe.

From winning Mr. Olympia multiple times to becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger has done it all. While the Austrian Oak has made his presence felt in some of the biggest blockbusters, the Terminator series cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s leading superstars.

While the bodybuilding champion was the bonafide talisman of the James Cameron films, he forged an excellent partnership with his co-star Linda Hamilton who played a pivotal role as Sarah Connor in the Terminator series. But Schwarzenegger was surprised to hear from his colleague that she was initially reluctant to pair up with him due to certain preconceived notions that she had about films and the actor.

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.

You would think that as technology advances, visual art forms such as film – including home media – would see a definite improvement in quality. But here we are yet again, getting bummed out over how studios have taken cleaning up transfers too far, polishing iconic movies into a “pristine” oblivion. And yes, they may have once more botched another James Cameron 4K Blu-ray. Game over, man!
The latest example comes via the 4K release of James Cameron’s Aliens, which came out on March 12th. As HD Report noted via a side-by-side comparison, even the high-definition transfer released 14 years ago is more respectable than the 4K one out just last week: “When comparing the two, the old Blu-ray is a better representation of celluloid at a time when filmmakers are trying to make images look less digital.” Hell, you can even see how Newt feels about it in the second image!

A fascinating combination of stars is coming down the chimney for the family comedy The Man With The Bag. Who better to lead a festive film with wholesome fun than action behemoths Arnold Schwarzenegger and Alan Ritchson? The Man With The Bag is Schwarzenegger’s first feature since wrapping his part for Kung Fury 2, while Ritchson’s cache is overflowing after starring in Reacher, with projects like Playdate, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and Motor City on the way.

Never bet against James Cameron. The man is responsible for some of the best and highest-grossing blockbusters of the last 40 years, and yet every time he makes a new (and admittedly risky) movie, everyone is skeptical about its chances of success. Granted, Cameron himself saying "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time just to break even does sound ludicrous and nearly impossible, but still! Jimmy C delivers.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and it is easy to see now that the "Avatar" franchise just prints money, but before 2009 there were plenty of reasons to be doubtful of a brand-new sci-fi movie making that much money. This means that James Cameron faced naysayers, particularly studio execs who thought they knew how to deliver the highest-grossing movie of all time better than the guy who had done it already.

How did the man who is best known for his portrayal of a cybernetic assassin in The Terminator become the governor of the state of California? What made him able to go from bodybuilding to acting, and from Hollywood to working in public service? Rewinding even further, what made him decide to leave his birthplace of Austria and relocate to the United States of America?
Well, you can get quick answers to these questions by reading Schwarzenegger’s book, Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life (2023), which is published by Penguin Random House. In the book, the actor discusses how his own values and beliefs were influenced by his father.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) ran an undercover sting on a Georgia-based animal training firm that services the major studios and networks. Then the activist group filed a Feb. 21 complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture alleging violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Usda’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service tells THR that it’s reviewing the matter. “Aphis takes all animal welfare-related complaints very seriously,” says a spokesperson.
The company, Atlanta Film Animals (Afa), disputes PETA’s claims related to a variety of its creatures, from monkeys to cockatoos. It also counters that it has evidence it will share with the federal agency that, in at least one instance, the clandestine operative failed to adequately provide medication to a pair of elderly pigs — which the organization denies.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases of True Lies and Aliens have hit delays in the UK – one longer than the other.
The plan was that now James Cameron has finally got around to approving new transfers for three of his films in particular – Aliens, True Lies and The Abyss – that we would be watching them on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc by April. Nothing could go wrong.
Er, stuff has gone wrong. At least in the UK.
Notwithstanding question marks over the film’s transfers themselves (we’ve talked about those here), we learned just before Christmas that the UK release of The Abyss has been abandoned altogether. That’s down to one particular scene that the BBFC objected to, and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment refused to budge on.

Before we lost James Cameron to the virtual world of Pandora (where he is still doing fine work), he mounted some of the most physically daunting productions in the history of cinema. He submerged his cast and crew in 30-plus feet of water in order to authentically capture the (literally and figuratively) high-pressure environment of "The Abyss," executed a load of wild vehicular stunts in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (one of which was so perilous his cameraman refused to shoot it), and compelled 20th Century Fox to build a new studio in Mexico for his reconstruction of the title vessel in "Titanic." Though he was pioneering computer generated visual effects throughout this period, he loved practical spectacle -- and, judging from the box office on most of these movies (save for "The Abyss"), audiences shared his ardor.

Tom Arnold was a showbiz joke in the early 1990s.
The unknown actor suddenly became a gossip mag regular in 1990 as Roseanne Barr's publicity-hungry husband. When she brought Arnold in as a writer on her hugely popular sitcom, there was a sense of coattail-riding. When she cast him on the show, and, two years later, convinced ABC to give him his own sitcom, this sense curdled for some into fact. And when several prominent TV critics shredded the series, Barr created a PR crisis by firing off nasty faxes to the naysayers (including a homophobia-tinged screed to USA Today's Matt Roush that brought her bigotry to the fore decades prior to her Trump-era meltdown). It was all terribly ugly. Barr had more than enough Nielsen ratings juice to weather this storm, but Arnold's fame seemed to be nearing its fifteenth minute.

According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, SNL 1975 explores the evening of October 11, 1975, when “a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. SNL 1975 is the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. James Cameron’s True Lies comes to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and we finally have a confirmed UK release date for March.
We’re a couple of months away now from the release of a trio of James Cameron films on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. We already know that Aliens is 100% confirmed for UK release, and that’s been given a release date of April 1st 2024.
Meanwhile, the eagerly-awaited remaster of The Abyss will be skipping the UK altogether, for reasons that are covered in a bit more detail here.
Finally, there’s True Lies, Cameron’s 1995 hit starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. This is – like The Abyss – a movie that’s never had a proper Blu-ray release over here or in the US, and it’s also coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray too.
The releases have been known about for some time, but it...

How do you make a “rom-com” centered around a long-time married couple? Well, one idea would be to throw them a “curve”. With the Bracketts in this story, she’s forgotten their anniversary prompting him to take, well not desperate, but offbeat measures. Would it “spice” things up considerably, maybe rekindle those old sparks, if they pretended to be strangers meeting for the first time? But how could she have “blanked’ on the “big day”? For that answer, this new movie mixes in elements of an action flick. With that new twist, we learn that she indulges in many variations of Role Play.
Oh, the lady in question is Emma Brackett (Kaley Cuoco). At the start of the story, she’s on the job, donning a wig, and terminating a target. As in assassinate. From there she phones her handler Raj (Rudy Dharmalingam), and heads to the airport. In the next scene,...

During the Cold War, we had “I Married a Communist” and “I Married a Monster From Outer Space” — two predicaments that the era’s paranoias rendered basically the same thing. In recent years, however, a more common screen fantasy might be summarized as “Whoops, My Significant Other Turns Out to Be an International Spy/Assassin.” There have been numerous efforts in that vein, of variably intentional absurdity. Now there’s “Role Play,” which by their standards doesn’t seem particularly outlandish for offering “The Big Bang Theory’s” Kaley Cuoco as a globetrotting killer cloaked in the normie guise of suburban mom.
This smaller-scaled, gender-flipped spin on the “True Lies” conceit, however, gets most of its charm and humor from David Oyelowo, playing the Jamie Lee Curtis role of the solidly middlebrow spouse flummoxed at finding themselves married to a lethal weapon. Revealing hitherto underexposed comic chops, he elevates a...
