Fans regularly make film biopics about famous musicians successful, but they also love to nitpick the results. Or to misquote Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division and the subject of a rather good musical biopic (Control), love will tear apart any work of fan service if it screws up the story, paints the subject in too unflattering a light or, worst of all, mangles the music with impersonations that barely rise above the level of karaoke. (Consider, if you dare, Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin in Beyond the Sea.)
On the other hand, there’s also something irksome about biopics that have actors lip sync to the original songs, like Naomi Ackie did for I Wanna Dance With Somebody or, much less successfully, Dennis Quaid in Great Balls of Fire! Especially if that means access to the original recordings or even rights to the songs in the first...

Pierre Morrel's 2008 film "Taken" is brazenly morally irresponsible.
"Taken" was not so much a thriller as an indulgent "dad fantasy," rooted in xenophobia and male sexual hysterics. The lead character, Bryan Mills, played by a wholly devoted and utterly capable Liam Neeson, was a divorced dad of a teenage girl named Kim (Maggie Grace) who saw his clout as a parent disappearing into the wealthy black hole of a cold-shouldered ex-wife (Famke Janssen) and her attentive new husband (Xander Berkeley). Bryan is a former CIA agent, and his job kept him away from home enough to damage his marriage. When Kim announces that she and a friend are going on an international holiday together, Bryan warns her that such an excursion is dangerous; kidnappers, he knows, often target traveling American teenage girls and sell them into sexual slavery. It sounds paranoid and everyone dismisses him.
Perhaps predictably, Kim is almost...

The Replacements are celebrating their 1985 major label debut Tim with a new deluxe reissue titled Tim: Let It Bleed Edition, out now via Rhino.
Clocking in at 65 tracks, Tim: Let It Bleed Edition begins with a long-awaited fresh mix of the original album. The Replacements were never happy with producer Tommy Ramone’s final mix of Tim, so they enlisted Ramones and Talking Heads collaborator Ed Stasium — who was considered to co-produce the LP with Ramone back in the day — to revamp the record for Disc One. A remastered version of Ramone’s original mix follows on Disc Two.
Disc Three, entitled Sons of No One: Rare & Unreleased, features previously unreleased Replacements demos, including tracks from a January 1985 recording session led by the band’s hero, Big Star’s Alex Chilton. Disc Four, Not Ready for Prime Time, wraps up the reissue with a live recording of the group’s January 11th,...

Paul McCartney said The Beatles’ “Nowhere Man” is “an anti-John song.” In addition, he revealed what he thought about it compared to other Beatles songs. John himself explained the origins of “Nowhere Man.”
John Lennon | Keystone / Stringer Paul McCartney felt The Beatles’ ‘Nowhere Man’ was inspired by John Lennon’s marriage
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul revealed John penned “Nowhere Man” after a night on the town. “When I came out to write with him the next day, he was kipping on the couch, very bleary-eyed,” he remembered.
“It was really an anti-John song, written by John,” Paul added. “He told me later, he didn’t tell me then, he said he’d written it about himself, feeling like he wasn’t going anywhere. I think actually it was about the state of his marriage.” For context, John was still married to his first wife,...

Paul McCartney said he avoided solos after his first performance with John Lennon, and Ringo Starr avoided them for his entire time with The Beatles. Lengthy instrumental solos aren’t necessarily a fundamental part of The Beatles’ sound, perhaps because half the members didn’t like them. The reasons they wanted to avoid solos were different, though.

When McCartney joined Lennon’s band, the Quarry Men, he had a chance to play a guitar solo during his first-ever performance with the band. He nailed the part during rehearsals but couldn’t get through it onstage.
“For my first gig, I was given a guitar solo on ‘Guitar Boogie,'” McCartney said, per The Beatles Anthology. “I could play it easily in rehearsal, so they elected that I should do it as my solo.

It’s hardly a stretch to say The Beatles dominated the 1960s, especially from 1963 onward. Their energetic debut album, Please Please Me, bowled over young English music fans. The United States finally caught up nearly a year later with the Fab Four’s historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The fact that The Beatles had 71 songs land in the top 100 of the Billboard singles chart is as impressive as their 20 No. 1 hits.

John Lennon has been lauded as one of the most prolific songwriters of all time, but he once admitted to stealing the lyrics to a Beatles song. He said that he often looked to the world around him for inspiration. He once took this a bit further than usual, though. Lennon couldn’t help but feel slightly embarrassed by the song.
John Lennon | Keystone/Getty Images John Lennon said he took outside inspiration for many Beatles songs
Lennon said that of all the songs he wrote with The Beatles, only one seemed to fall into his head from nowhere. Fittingly, the song is “Nowhere Man.”
“I was just sitting, trying to think of a song, and I thought of myself sitting there, doing nothing and going nowhere,” he said, per the book The Beatles: The Authorized Biography by Hunter Davies. “Once I’d thought of that, it was easy. It all came out.

The Beatles‘ Rubber Soul is one of the most beloved classic rock albums of all time. It’s often considered the band’s most extensive foray into folk-rock music. Despite this, some of the great songs on the album aren’t folk songs.
The Beatles | Icon and Image / Contributor 5. ‘The Word’
The Beatles gave us a lot of songs about love, including “All You Need Is Love,” “Love Me Do,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Love You To,” And I Love Her,” “Real Love,” “She Loves You,” and “All My Loving,” just to name a few. “The Word” is another meditation on the subject, but it stands out because of those chic 1960s guitars. Here, The Beatles prove they were just as good at harmonizing as The Beach Boys when they wanted to be. If only this track was a single from The Beatles’ Rubber Soul!

Choosing 10 of the weirdest Beatles songs is challenging. The Fab Four produced many strange tunes that have left fans scratching their heads for decades.
Once The Beatles stopped touring, they spent more time in the recording studio and experimented. They’d also discovered LSD and liked smoking marijuana. Here are the top 10 weirdest Beatles songs.
The Beatles | Mirrorpix/Getty Images 10. ‘Mr. Moonlight’
“Mr. Moonlight” is a strange love song. The way John Lennon sings the verses is also a bit weird. The person in the tune is thanking the moon for giving them their love. It’s not an ordinary romantic song, and the melody is jarring. It’s also one of the most often-forgotten Beatles songs.
9. ‘Nowhere Man’
“Nowhere Man” could be about someone who doesn’t belong, but it’s still weird. The beginning verse paints a picture of someone out of a story like Alice in Wonderland.

Taiwanese drama series are gaining increasing prominence on the world stage, in line with the rapid growth of global Ott platforms.
Stirrings of new interest in drama from Taiwan were seen in 2017 with The Teenage Psychic and 2018 with On Children. But it is the events of the past two years, when audiences found themselves craving more content during pandemic lockdowns, that has seen a sizeable number of made-in-Taiwan series make their way to fresh audiences around the world.

No two Matrix movies are alike. We remember the original as a revolutionary cyberpunk action film that introduced audiences to “bullet time” and the “wire fu” action sequences of the East. But The Matrix sequels weren’t just more of the same: The Matrix Reloaded is in many ways a superhero fantasy with the kind of CG spectacle we take for granted in the Marvel age. Meanwhile, The Matrix Revolutions could best be described as a manga and anime-inspired mecha horror movie, an absolutely twisted conclusion to the story that feels like the Wachowskis’ answer to the equally controversial The End of Evangelion.
Now, almost 20 years after the end of the original trilogy, how do we describe The Matrix Resurrections, a legacy sequel that’s at once a nostalgic look back at 1999 as well as a standalone continuation of Revolutions? Simply put: this is a love story, within an action movie,...

Meet Paul McCartney: the ultimate Beatles geek. The excellent new Hulu documentary series McCartney 3, 2, 1 gets up close with the most legendary of rock stars, alone in the studio with Rick Rubin, telling stories and listening deep to the Beatles. It’s a fascinating thrill just to listen with him. Like anyone else, he’s mystified by how these four nowhere boys from Liverpool managed to create this music. As Paul says, “For me, I’ve grown to be a fan of the Beatles. Because then, I was just a Beatle.

Hulu’s Original Docuseries McCartney 3,2,1 is a laid-back sit down with Paul McCartney, the man who believed in yesterday, reminiscing about all those years ago. Long-time Beatles fans will have heard most of the stories before, though there are a few new tidbits which have been buried in the mix. The casual conversation provides a wealth of tonality when McCartney talks about the sounds behind the music.
For the chat, McCartney sits down with Rick Rubin in the most familiar of settings: a recording studio, with easy access to the songs being discussed. The six-episode series explores McCartney’s work with The Beatles, Wings, and solo releases. Directed by Zachary Heinzerling, the interview is relaxed, although Paul is often very animated. He fiddles with console buttons, pops up for quick runs at a piano or guitar, and air drums throughout. The black and white filming makes the conversation feel intimate and timeless.

Tune-Yards frontwoman Merrill Garbus showcased the band’s recent song “Hypnotized” on Jimmy Kimmel Live with the help of a puppet. The song is off the band’s upcoming album Sketchy., out on March 26th.
As she sings the pulsating song, Garbus moves the puppet, created in her own image and wearing a similar dress. She’s joined by her band and backup singers, but the focus stays on the lookalike puppet, whom Garbus lays down on a table at the end of the performance.
Tune-Yards have released several songs so far from Sketchy.

Tune-Yards delivered a joyous rendition of their recent single, “Hold Yourself,” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday, February 22nd.
The performance found Merrill Garbus, Nate Brenner, and their backing band channeling a kind of Seventies children’s show vibe, filling the set with bright monochrome colors. Garbus started the performance singing while sunk in a bunch of giant plush pillows, slowly digging herself out to belt the song’s final refrain while standing: “We all have doubts/We all have rage/We all have trouble being brave enough to turn the page.

International players’ ambitions to turn Taiwan into a center for Mandarin-language productions might have given new hope to the island’s struggling filmmakers, but local observers say there is still a long way to go to reinvigorate its film industry.
Industry practitioners and critics say that although networks such as Fox, HBO and Netflix will give Taiwanese talents more international exposure and raise the standards of production, it is more likely to benefit genre filmmakers only. Arthouse filmmakers will have to look elsewhere.
In the decade since the wild success of “Cape No.7” in 2008, Taiwanese films have yet to find a way to sustain the box office miracle set by the acclaimed romantic drama. There have been occasional hits, such as “You Are the Apple of My Eye” (2011), “Our Times” (2015) and 2018’s box office winner “More Than Blues,” which was among the four Taiwanese films showcased at the recent Far East Film Festival in Udine,...

There have been occasional hits, such as “You Are the Apple of My Eye” (2011), “Our Times” (2015) and 2018’s box office winner “More Than Blues,” which was among the four Taiwanese films showcased at the recent Far East Film Festival in Udine,...

The uncertainties that loom over the media in mainland China could soon spark a renaissance of Taiwan’s film and television industries, with an increasing number of international and regional players planning to produce Mandarin-language content on the island that would target Chinese audiences worldwide.
Taiwan’s free environment, lower production costs and abundance of Mandarin-speaking talent all contribute to this movement.
Mainland China, on the other hand, is becoming less desirable as a production base because of the continuously tightened censorship and surging production and talent costs. The local industry is still recovering from the Fan Bingbing tax evasion scandal.
Although China’s tax authorities recovered more than 11.7 billion yuan ($1.7 billion) of back taxes from stars and entertainment companies at the end of 2018, this only concluded the first stage of the crackdown. Government actions will continue this year and certain productions are expected to be put on hold.

For those looking for proof of what fandom can achieve, behold: The script for the “‘Sense8 Special,” which will wrap up the fan favorite Netflix drama following its abrupt cancelation this spring, physically exists!
While initially canceled following the release of Season 2, fan outcry led Netflix to reverse that decision and produce a two-hour finale, and as seen in the Instagram photo above from star Miguel Angel Silvestre (who plays no-longer-closeted movie star Lito on the show), watermarked scripts have been distributed to the actors.
Beyond proof-of-life, the cover page reveals a number of important details about the upcoming production. For one thing, Lana J. Wachowski (the first time she’s used the letter J with her name?) is credited with writing the script alongside David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. Both men are novelists, with Mitchell having a pre-established connection to the Wachowski tribe: He wrote the original novel “Cloud Atlas,...

Mim Shaikh in Freehold
Hussein (Mim Shaikh) is a real estate agent in the cutthroaat property market of modern London. Determined to get ahead, he hasn't given a thought to who he steps on in the process, but one man, Orlan (Javier Botet), has paid a high price for Hussein's success and isn't going to take it lying down. Secretly moving into Hussein's flat, he begins a campaign of revenge.
That's the plot of Freehold, a socially astute comedy that goes to some very dark places. It reminds me of when, as children, my brother and I used to blame any mess or unexplained thing that happened in the house on our supposed secret lodger, Mr Nowhere Man. I suspect a lot of kids have tried things like this, and I suggest as much to Dom Bridges, the film's director.
Dom laughs. "That's a good way of putting it actually - blaming someone else.

If you’re not watching ABC’s The Family, but have intentions of watching it, I suggest not reading this review right now. Viewing The Family, “Nowhere Man” is like being shown how an amazing magic trick is done – so you don’t want to spoil enjoying the magic! However, this show is far from over and there are clearly more tricks to come. (You can catch up on The Family over on ABC’s website.) If you have been watching the show then you know how one thing this dark thriller forces you to contemplate is the difference between sick and evil. Sick

Rocky Handsome
Starring: John Abraham, Nishikant Kamat, Nathalia Kaur, Diya Chalwad, Sharad Kelkar
Directed by: Nishikant Kamat
Rating: ****(4 stars)
Is John Abraham’s Kabir Ahlawat, alias Rocky, alias Nowhere Man the finest performance of his career so far? Well, yes. It would have to be a toss-up between Shoojit Sircar’s excellent political thiller Madras Café and now Nishikant Kamat’s Rocky Handsome.
It is unequivocally evident from the start of this dark gripping thriller about damnation and tentative redemption that Kamat is a director who understands John’s physicality as well as his emotional strengths. Kamat uses both the qualities to create a man doddering on the edge of self-destruction. At mid-point when John in shirtless splendour is required to display his heroic swagger by a camera that loves beauty as much the ugliness of existence, we know what Rocky doesn’t.
Heroes are born out of necessity.

There's a weird throwback feeling afoot this year among the network dramas: Quantico feels a little bit like the short-lived ABC drama Traveler from 2007. The images of synapses firing and cranial folds lighting up on Limitless are straight out of CSI — plus the movie it's based on, which came out in 2011. Minority Report's source film came out in 2002. It's a throwback season, and Blindspot fits right in, pulling from Prison Break, John Doe, Nowhere Man, with maybe a dash of La Femme Nikita. Shake it all up, drain out any interesting dialogue, and voilà: You have yourself a network pilot. We open in Times Square, where someone has ditched a duffel bag. When the bomb squad approaches — ziiiiiiip! There's a naked lady in there (Jaimie Alexander). She's all freaked out! She has no memory of who she is, thanks to being "pumped" full of a memory-erasing drug, as...

As Warner Bros. Pictures and Bradley Cooper are enjoying the success of American Sniper at the box office, even though it was dethroned by SpongeBob SquarePants last weekend, the studio is looking to reteam with the Oscar-nominated actor again. THR has word that Warner Bros. is in the midst of picking up Orphan X, a yet-to-be-published book by Gregg Hurwitz that will be produced by Cooper, who also has an eye towards possibly starring in the film. The project marks another collaboration between Cooper and The Hangover director Todd Phillips by way of their new production banner that is based at Warner Bros. The book won't be published until February of 2016, so details are light as far as the story is concerned. What we do know is that the book is a thriller focusing on a man named Evan Smoak, known as "Nowhere Man," who helps others, sometime through violent means.

Given American Sniper‘s record-breaking success, it should surprise no-one that Warner Bros. is eager to collaborate with star Bradley Cooper once again, and according The Hollywood Reporter, that reunion may come sooner rather than later.
Today brings news that the company has entered negotiations to acquire the movie rights for Gregg Hurwitz’s still-to-be-released novel, Orphan X, with the intention being that Cooper would produce and possibly star in the final product. Described as a gritty thriller, the project centers on a “Nowhere Man” known as Evan Smoak (Cooper, presumably, should he choose to commit), who offers a helping hand to others in his particular, overly-violent manner. Such a career path soon sends him veering into the world of human slavery, and he must partner with a detective from the Los Angeles Police Department if he is to crack the case.

Pardon me if I sound like Saturday Night Live city correspondent Stefon, but this week’s Sleepy Hollow has everything.
Jenny kicking tail. Hawley leaving town. Ichabod and Abbie singing karaoke — both solo and together. Callbacks to prior episodes. References to both Star Wars and Meghan Trainor. And the human lie detector — It’s that thing? When Katrina uses her powers to discern an important truth about Irving? But otherwise keeps to herself for most of the hour?
The most important aspect of the episode: Abbie and Crane feel more like the Witnesses we love than they have all season.

J.J. Abrams cast a meaty hook into the Web waters on Aug. 19, a teaser for a new entertainment project that we may or may not know anything about. The mystery box angler loves using this kind of bait: “Stranger” is reminiscent of his puzzling promo stuff for Super-8 or the crypto-content that the Lost brain trust used to feed fans during hiatus. (Remember “The Last Supper” ads prior to season 6?) Decoding this kind of stuff isn’t for everyone. And for some, it annoys as much as it amuses. Regardless: We’re biting. There are two things you need to know about 2 Guns. First, turns out it’s pretty good. Second, it has a crazy plot. Cuckoo bananagrams crazy. It’s one of those movies where everyone is secretly betraying everyone all of the time. Like, if the characters in 2 Guns just sat in a room, went around in a circle, and described all of their various motivations, it would take three hours. Everyone is lying in 2 Guns all the time, so much so that the movie practically constitutes a deconstruction of the whole notion of truth. It gets a bit confusing. Forthwith,...
