superb acting
nick-28224 December 1999
If you want to see what skilled acting is all about, watch these two masters - Alan Bates and Sinead Cusack - turn what could otherwise be a dull and British story in something highly enjoyable almost solely on the strength of their personalities and acting skills. (A equally skilled director helps as well.) Imagine two young American actors in these roles, and you will see what I mean.

This series - which appeared in the US as a PBS Mystery presentation - which in other hands could have been a mess, is one of the most enjoyable things I've seen on television in a long time. I hope it will be shown again.

Quirky and romantic like classic Hollywood screwball comedy
bmitchell9461916 July 2003
This is a quirky romantic piece with lots of surprises. The leads are very engaging, intelligent and real. They are not overly glamorous but yet very attractive people you would not mind spending time with. This mini series is very reminiscent of the classic Hollywood screwball comedies of the thirties and forties . Preston's Sturges' Sullivan's Travels comes to mind. This is one of the best shows to ever appear on PBS and it's difficult to understand why it is not out on Video or DVD. I am very thankful that I made a copy of this program when it was originally aired on PBS.

Entertaining if lightweight character-driven murder/mystery romp.
Rupert1712 July 2009
Alan Bates and Sinead Cusack are fortuitously thrown together in search of a renowned crossword compiler gone missing after apparently some connection with murders and a sinister, shady corporation lurking in the background. Their search takes them on an odyssey through the north of England, Scotland and finally to the Orkney Islands.

This is a romantic comedy/caper rather than a hard-edged thriller, propped up by a wonderful rapport between Bates and Cusack rather than nail-biting scenes and complicated plotting. In fact the details surrounding the sinister corporation I thought were vague and unconvincing but hardly important to the enjoyment of the adventure. Consequently, the entertainment value derives more from the romantic entanglement and witty dialogue between Bates and Cusack unfolding against the beautiful stark landscapes of Britain. 8/10

A very funny, very romantic and very British mini-series
glass_chameleon29 July 1999
I saw this mini-series on "Mystery" on PBS and absolutely loved it. I usually hate movies/shows with a romantic bent but Alan Bates and Sinead Cusack have the most wonderful (and non-saccharine) chemistry of anybody I have seen. It was lovely to see a romance between two intelligent people who have plenty of lines on their faces instead of the typical 'Friends' twentysomethings. I honestly had to check the credits to make sure they weren't married to one another.

The writing overall is very well done, especially the conversations between Oliver and Diane, the two main characters. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you interested and the humor is...well...very British. But very very funny. Highly recommended.

How Does It Get Better Than This?
theyoungun29 June 2004
My greatest complaint is that this one has never been committed to DVD or even VHS. I've never seen any explanation of why this one hasn't been put on the market. It's just too good for words.

One of the most brilliant, funny and delicious adventure romances I've ever seen. If you have ANY chance to see it, the acting is totally brilliant, great script, twists and turns in the story line and a delightful romance, as well.

Alan Bates, scene stealer par excellence in so many of his films, performs the title role of Oliver, who sets out to find the person behind his favorite series of crossword puzzles.

I won't even try to give you any of the zany antics which take place, yet all plausible, as he meets and falls for Sinead Cusak, that brilliant actress, certainly up to some quality scene stealing herself.

God bless the Brit acting community.

Good news: finally available on DVD!!!
8-Foot18 December 2004
I've shared the prior lamentations that "Oliver's Travels" was neither available on home video nor, to my knowledge, had it been repeated on PBS. Now, try AcornOnline--dot--you-know-what or, alternately, see the Amazon listing (less $$) for March 2005 delivery.

This miniseries is a delightful, skillful blend of humor, mystery, suspense, intrigue, crime, romance, history, and travelogue. Crosswords and anagrams also figure as important plot elements. (Oliver can make an anagram out of almost anything but his own name.)

At the story's center is a villainous multinational corporation which has sucked many of the characters into its vortex. Although details of this operation remain vague and shadowy to the end, the conclusion is nonetheless satisfying.

The "Travels" concluded in the Orkney Islands, and by then, I was ready to hop on the next plane to there.

So enjoyable on many levels! Absolutely first rate!

Throughly enjoyable

When I first saw this on "Mystery" I was unsure I would like the show due to the fact that I had seen Alan Bates in only one other movie and really disliked his character. However, the miniseries proved to be quite lovely (it is really the only way to describe it). I am a fan of B-movies, horror and comedy and YET came away from this with a smile and a sigh of contentment. The interaction of the actors is seamless and highly professional. The movie is full of beautiful scenery and sweet nostalgia. I got my long-awaited copy of this in December but was disappointed to note that Diana Rigg's comments were absent from the DVD. I have other "Mystery" videos such as Ice House and Heat of the Sun (ok, that doesn't fit in with my purported preferred genres) both of which have the added information about the authors and the events related to the movie. Still, I heartily recommend this movie as a Saturday afternoon movie that leaves you with a smile and a brighter look on life. I also loved Mrs. Slokum (sp?) as the inn keeper.

excellent series

I finally got the chance to purchase a copy of this wonderful series on DVD. I had a taped copy of the PBS airing which I had watched over and over again. Now with the dvds I can watch it as much as I want without getting afraid the tape would wear out.

OLIVER'S TRAVELS is the story of two smart, funny and beautiful people (Alan Bates and Sinead Cusack) who meet while in the pursuit of a murder mystery. The repartee between the two is delicious. The acting is so good that you don't want the story to end.

These are probably two of the best actors from the UK. Just watch their faces when they are interacting and you'll know what I mean. And Sinead Cusack's quirky little smile just gets to me every time.

My favorite scene: their wedding vows at the cathedral. My favorite lines: Diane - Why did you get divorced?

Oliver - She said I never listened.

Diane - Was she right?

Oliver - I wasn't listening.

If you ever get the chance run, don't walk, to get a copy of the DVDs.

Even Better News! All Episodes now on YouTube!
robertberkman6 January 2022
Just discovered this--you can watch at least 5 full episodes on YouTube-not even the premium one, but the "regular" one--

OK, my review above was too short-even though this was "breaking news" so my filler is that this is a charming, delightful, funny and very human comedy with a lot of substance...

He's back baby! :-)

A Feast for the Heart and Mind
Rassilon8 June 2001
I have to agree that "Oliver's Travels" was one of the most enjoyable and cleaver mysteries I have seen on my PBS channel, I only regret two things. One that here in American we saw a cut down version of the series with several scenes deleted for time. And Second NO ONE HAS THOUGHT TO PUT THIS WONDERFUL SERIES OUT IN FULL ON VIDEO TAPE, EITHER HERE OR IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. I have a taped copy of the series and I have to admit my family has played it so often, that it is starting to wear out. For those who enjoyed this series, there is at least an Audio tape of the Alan Bates reading the story. Which also includes the often referred to but never told joke of "The Horse that like to sit on eggs" that Bates speaks about in the series. The tape "Oliver's Travels" is produced by Hodder Headline Audio Books, London ISBN # 1-85998-045-7

Wonderful romantic adventure - a bit quirky
nancy2231424 June 2013
The previous reviewer said this is not available on DVD but it is now. My husband and I saw this when it first was aired and now own a copy. Not only that we took a trip to England and Scotland for an anniversary trip using the site "Scotland the Movie" to determine some of the sites where the show was shot.

It is an excellent adventure of a redundant Professor who is looking for his favorite crossword setter and a suspended PC. Oliver is an avid puzzle solver and anagram man. They delve into things they shouldn't and are shadowed by the evil Mr Baxter as they travel across England and Scotland in search of missing crossword setter Aristotle. Love story, action, travelogue, and comedy. Highly recommended
