There's an entire generation of movie lovers who first encountered Jackie Chan in the "Rush Hour" films. The actor, director and stuntsman didn't have a huge love for the franchise at the time, perhaps because they barely scratched the surface of what he was capable of as a choreographer. Still, his buddy cop films hold a special place in the hearts of countless action fans, and his rapport with co-star Chris Tucker isn't half bad, either.
The "Rush Hour" trilogy hasn't aged the best in the intervening years, thanks in part to its director, Brett Ratner, who was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017. The film's "East meets West" humor would also never fly today, making the franchise something of a time capsule for irreverent, 2000s humor. Still, we could never get enough of Chan and Tucker — that's why we're all still holding out for that potential "Rush Hour 4." While...

Why am I just finding out about Bad Girls Club right now? I mean I know I’ve read that title before but season 17? Really? Why has no one told me about this guilty pleasure? From what I understand season 17 of Bad Girls club is doing an “East meets West” kind of a thing and they’re already gearing up for the third episode tonight. Seven women, kind of like The Real World have been picked to live together in the same house. While the tagline isn’t “see what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real,” that’s

Gotta love a good old-fashioned Western. It’s a genre that’s been an American staple for decades. The image of the lone gunslinger is one that’s inspired countless novels, films, comics, and TV shows — and it’s one that’s bound to continue to do so for countless years. Though while as kids the genre may have been synonymous with fun adventure, the reality is that the majority of these flicks are slow, meditative character studies.
That’s all well and good, but I’m gonna chuck every one of those movies out the window today. You won’t find me talking about The Assassination of Jesse James, Once Upon A Time In The West, or The Unforgiven here. Granted, I acknowledge the quality of those films, but today, I wanted to highlight a handful of flicks that may be more in line with what we’ll be...

John Frankenheimer ended a three year hiatus following his 1979 environmental horror/creature feature Prophecy with a commendable martial-arts effort, The Challenge (1982). Starring Scott Glenn in his first lead performance, the curiosity was co-written by John Sayles and also stars Japanese legend Toshiro Mifune (who had previously appeared in Frankenheimer’s 1966 film, Grand Prix). Though it ultimately proves to be a nonsensical narrative in its clash of East meets West and traditional values threatened by the consumer cravings of the modernized world, some fantastic fight sequences (a pre-fame Steven Seagal served as technical advisor) and superb lensing from famed cinematographer Kozo Okazaki mark the title as worthy of recuperation for its conglomeration of vintage components.
In 1982 Los Angeles, a down and out boxer, Rick Murphy (Glenn) is approached to transport a sacred sword to Kyoto in order to restore it to its rightful owner, a master samurai, Toru Yoshida (Mifune). Apparently,...

Retrospective to include around 20 East and West German feature and documentary films from cinema and television.
The Retrospective of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 11-21) is to be dedicated to the year 1966, a year considered to be a turning point in German cinema.
“The year 1966 stands for extraordinary films in the West and the East, films which broke new artistic ground,” said Berlinale festival director Dieter Kosslick.
“The Retrospective 2016 shows the audacious revolt and tentative exploration in a time of transition.”
The strand will include around 20 East and West German feature and documentary films from cinema and television. Additionally, more than 30 films of short and medium length - a typical format at the time - will feature in film programmes and as supporting films.
In 1966, the New German Cinema wave received critical acclaim at major film festivals for the first time.

Paul Rudd and Alexander Skarsgard have joined the cast of Duncan Jones' long-gestating dream project "Mute" at Lotus Entertainment.
Set in Berlin four decades in the future, the now immigrant-filled city has become a real mix of East meets West culture. Skarsgard plays a mute bartender who goes up against his city's gangsters and deep into the city's underworld in an effort to find out what happened to his missing partner.
Rudd plays one of a pair of strange American surgeons who may be the only clue the bartender may have to the truth. Jones and Mike Johnson penned the script while Stuart Fenegan will produce.
Jones is currently in post-production on the epic fantasy game adaptation "Warcraft" for Universal Pictures.

Premiering its first two episodes at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival, the eight episode Cold War television mini-series “Deutschland 83” went on to become the first German series to be broadcast on American television in its native language. A Sundance TV original series (co-produced by Rtl Television), it stands as one of the more notable moments in television from 2015, an example of a growing international industry with increased cross-over potential. Created by husband and wife duo Anna Winger, an American novelist, and Joerg Winger, a German television producer, the series reflects not only period tensions but is constructed in a familiar format that’s earned it comparisons to the acclaimed Us series “The Americans.” Imbued with a delectable early 80s soundtrack, East meets West with vintage flair, an antidote to the curiously hampered mechanics of Steven Spielberg’s recent theatrical release, Bridge of Spies, which documents the birth of the infamous...

Island #1 Review – Image Comics
I lived in Europe for half of my life, and my entire life I’ve lived on the coast. For some of that life I listened to podcasts or read articles about comics in europe and how they and creators are viewed in comparison as an ideal to the United States, as if comics were a common sighting and comfortably excepted, a part of the passive everyday culture like film, music, or coffee.
I cannot speak from a creator’s point of view, but from my experience as a resident of some dozen years, that was never true. I don’t think I ever saw a comic in my time in Italy, France, or Spain unless, much like in the U.S., I entered an establishment that was comic book specific. In fact, at the time, the last time I had lived in the U.S you could find comics everywhere,...

The latest news spreading across the internet at the moment is that MGM (Who did the first two movies) are making big steps towards a third installment, something i am sure all Jackie fans will be excited about.
Shanghai Noon was released back in 2000 and the second (Shanghai Knights) released 3 years later, so why has it taken 12 years (Yes 12 years) before planning a third? Jackie has always stated he would love to make a third along with actor Owen Wilson, but insisted the script must be right. I loved the first two, Shanghai Noon being my favorite which also featured Yuen Biao as a stunt double and he also helped with the action choreography.
It will be interesting to see where this movie location ends up, Shanghai Noon was East meets West, Shanghai Knights they traveled to England, so what will happen in the third installment? I am happy this is happening,...

We can't quite believe the X Factor final is this weekend - we're not sure we're ready to say goodbye to Simon Cowell yet - but before we get to crowning a winner, there is some very important business to attend to. Like, say, who Andrea, Ben and Fleur will be duetting with. And what their winner's singles will be. We need to know.
Well, we'll probably find out very soon but until then we'd like to wildly speculate. So below, we lay out our choices for the top three - both the silly and the serious.
Andrea Faustini
Dream Duet
Silly: Spice Girls. Just imagine. We know Andrea is a huge fan, and we also really want to see Mel B and Geri get on the same stage again. Frankly if Andrea's not belting out the chorus to 'Viva Forever' on Saturday night he doesn't deserve to win.

Bona, China’s largest private film distributor and vertically integrated film company, is expected to be one of the anchor investors along with Thailand’s Chia Tai Group. The five-year fund is closed-ended and will be formalized on March 31, with capital raising to begin shortly thereafter.

This year I attended Strategic Partners, a coproduction event held in Halifax just after Tiff. The degree of intimacy and friendliness makes it ideal for networking. There I met Kestutis Drazdauskas, a producer from Lithuania, attending Sp for the third time. Aside from producing, over the last few years as Business Development Director, he has also created the Vilnius Film Cluster.
He has been in film professionally since 1995, when he was 2nd Ad on “Undertow” by Eric Red, working his way up through television, where his fourth film in 1999 was Donna Dietch’s “The Devil’s Arithmetic” which she shot in Lithuania. He was the Coordinating Assistant Director. In 1999, he produced his first short film, “The Officer's Romance” by Vytautas V. Landsbergis and since then he has produced several more shorts. In 2006 he produced his first feature film, “Diring”. Since then he has produced or exec produced five films and is working on his sixth, “2 Nights Till Morning” about a one-night stand between two strangers without a common language which takes an unexpected turn when an ash cloud from a volcano in Iceland prevents all flights from taking off.
As an independent film producer must do, Kestutis wears several hats. Since 2003 he has been producing commercials for his bread and butter. But for his heart and soul, even in the 90s, he produced features. This was a difficult and expensive endeavor in his home country of Lithuania because there was no funding or infrastructure after the collapse of the Soviet film industry. To make movies, one had to bring in all the equipment from abroad. There were no labs so film had to be transported to Prague or Warsaw for processing.
He and his partners began investing in Cinevera - today the largest lighting and grips company providing the Baltic region. Then they moved on to Cinescope, the largest camera rental outlet in the Baltics. And then they went into set construction. In 2011 they formed the Vilnius Film Cluster, which today is comprised of three production companies, several service companies, a film festival Kino Pavasaris (Vilnius International Film Festival) and a film news portal, kinfo.lt/.
Several projects are still in the works, like a 1,100 square meter stage which will include the largest green screen in the Baltics, make up and wardrobe studios, and production offices.
Vilnius Film Cluster is going to digitize 30 screens in small towns throughout Lithuania which will develop new audiences. The country itself has 40 screens which are city-centered multiplexes which show Lithuanian films along with the usual fare of U.S. blockbusters. The average run for Lithuanian films is two weeks. There is no special treatment for Lithuanian films, but there is a need. People like hearing their own language and seeing themselves on screen. Out of 250 films released in a year only 10 are Lithuanian but they account for a market share of 12 to 15%. The countryside has not been totally bereft of films. Theaters and cultural centers in small towns have big venues, but not a lot of content aside from plays and concerts show there. Going digital in municipalities will result in job creation. The Vilnius Film Cluster will supply equipment and content. This project will take three years to complete. Spreading cinema into the countryside will improve the market share of domestic films.
The idea and implementation of this added value for European content network of cinemas was developed with the help of Sofa, a two year-old initiative creating a school of film agents founded by Nikolaj Nikitin (a delegate of the Berlinale). They are building with the European subsidy system which furnishes 50% of the financing. The other 50% is split, 30% private equity and 20% Lithuanian government funding.
European Union structural funding goes in seven year terms. The new, 2014 to 2020 cycle is beginning now for member states. In 2016, the new cinemas will be open for business.
Lithuania is the leader in Baltics. Latvia has a related language, but people from one country do not understand people from the other country. Estonia has an entirely different language, related to Finnish. So the Baltics is more of a geo-political entity rather than a cultural unit.
They don't really share cultures though ideally they do cooperate and share knowledge and initiatives. For example, Vilnius Film Cluster is consulting with Estonian colleagues who are trying to establish a similar cluster. However, there are more coproductions with Germany than with Latvia or Estonia. More productions are becoming international rather than locally centered on Lithuania.
Although there are subsidies to be found for filmmaking, there are no subsidies for distribution. There is much to do in education and audience building.
At present Kestutis is copoducing “2 Nights Till Morning”, a Finnish Lithuanian coproduction shooting in Vilnius, it stars Marie-Josée Croze star of "Tell No One”, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” and “Barbarian Invasions" for which she won the Palme d’or in 2003 and which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Feature.
Kestutis is also developing two more features. One is by the Italian director, Gianluca Sodaro. They made the short " God's Got His Head in the Clouds” together, and this new film is an elaboration of it, dealing with matters of faith and a priest experiencing a crisis. As he journeys to renew his faith he meets people who have counterparts in biblical characters. It is funny and contemporary. They are finalizing the script now to shoot next year. The feature is called “Solo”.
Another film currently in development is an Armenian film “The Last Inhabitant”, written and directed by Jivan Avetisyan.
His feature, “Tevanik” premiered in May in Armenia. This will be his second. It is situated in the Nagorny Karabakh region which is mostly Armenian, but was incorporated by Stalin into Azerbaijan. After the Soviet collapse the Armenians declared independence. Officially the region is still at status of war, but there has been no military action for 20 years. It is, in fact, protected by Russian forces. Avetisyan was 15 when the war happened. There are lots of stories about people in the war, and the film is very humanistic. His first film was about three teenagers who become adults over night. This new one is about two people, one Azerbaijan, one Armenian who forced to help each other, although one dies in process. The story has resonance today. It has Armenian funding and will raise more through its Lithuanian partners. The films are shot on small budgets; his first was Us $250,000 with lots of equipment, tanks, etc. donated as in-kind contributions. This film will be presented at coproduction forums, like Strategic Partners, East Meets West in Karlovy Vary. It has a larger budget (but is still comparatively small) and requires three or four coproducing partners.
We hope to see this feature and more coming out of Lithuania. We know we will see Kestutis a lot more around the circuit.
East meets West to immensely satisfying effect in the vibrant mash-up of an animated romp, Big Hero 6. Loosely adapted from an obscure Marvel Comics title and set in the slightly futuristic city of San Fransokyo (where cable cars and cherry blossoms co-exist in perfect harmony), the funny and heartwarming story about the bond between a teen tech geek and a gentle robot represents another can’t-miss proposition by Walt Disney Animation Studios. “In My City I am Alone…Main Hi Na Jaanu Ke Main Hoon Kaun?” I am sure that many of you are enjoying this wonderful song from The Xpose that is currently riding high in the charts.
When two great musicians Himesh Reshammiya and Yo Yo Honey Singh come together, we can only expect magic. Himesh Reshammiya and Yo Yo Honey Singh share a special musical bond and that is clearly visible when one listens to Hai Apna Dil from Himesh’s forthcoming film The Xpose. The main twist in the song is the unique combination of English and Hindi lyrics that are written by one of Bollywood’s finest lyricists Sameer Anjaan. Himesh has sung the song with utmost ease and one can also hear the variations in his voice as he sings the lines “Mausam Aaj Toh Bada Beqaraar Hai, Aise Main Mujhe Tera Intezar Hai…” Another surprise...

Are you ready to get your head back in the game?
Zac Efron might be. Over the weekend, a reporter for E! asked the actor if he would ever return to the sacred (?) halls of East High — home of Disney’s High School Musical franchise. And instead of shooting down the rumors, Efron replied, “We’re all thinking about it. I continue to see all the guys from High School. Every time we do…there’s just this look between us.”
Right off the bat, I’ll acknowledge that while this isn’t a “no,” it’s also not confirmation of a reunion.

“Love in Time” is an old fashioned Hong Kong romantic comedy directed by Leefire, a multi-talented type also known as a playwright, radio host and song writer, following up on his not entirely successful 2007 “Give Love”, which he co-helmed with Joe Ma. Now making his solo debut, he offers up another slightly leftfield take on the genre, with popular Tvb actor Bosco Wong (“Together”) and actress Stephy Tang (“East Meets West”) headlining as a couple of (hopefully!) distant cousins falling in love, with support from Sammy Leung (“Love Undercover”), Danny So (“The Way we Were”) and Zhao Ke (“Chase our Love”). Bosco Wong plays Cho, an amiable slacker type, who scrapes out a living by selling ice cream from his truck with his amusingly named friend and roommate, the womanising Beer (Sammy Leung), living together in a small flat owned by his uncle. Things change when Cho is forced to...

Mark Boal was on the phone with the CIA. It was April 29, 2011, fourteen months after he had collected a pair of Academy Awards for writing and producing The Hurt Locker, and he was back at work. Boal had spent the better part of the years since 9/11 as a journalist, traveling in hot zones, embedding with troops, and covering the “war on terror.” Now, he and director Kathryn Bigelow, his Hurt Locker partner, were deep into a new project—not a sequel but a different kind of war story, which would take both of them back into that film’s difficult location shoots and Bush-era moral murk. Their plan was to depict the ill-fated attempt, just months after 9/11, to capture or kill Osama bin Laden in the caves of Tora Bora. Their story would be what Boal calls an “East meets West” drama—“of cultural differences,” adds Bigelow—“irreconcilable,” adds Boal.

After directing Ryan Gosling in Drive last year, plenty of film fans are looking forward to Nicholas Winding Refn's new film Only God Forgives (especially now that Gosling has departed the remake of Logan's Run that Refn is supposedly still directing). We've only seen one still from the film so far, but now a new sort of promo photo has emerged, and for those who would prefer to see Gosling looking pretty, this one is going to be hard to swallow. The black and white photo with Gosling's face beaten to hell is likely from the American Film Market with some simple text on top to promote the film there earlier this month. Here's the new photo from Nicholas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives via The Film Stage: Nicholas Winding Refn writes and directs Only God Forgives, a film that been described as a modern "East meets West" western, and...

Her "Parenthood" love interest may be "Friday Night Lights" alum Matt Lauria, but Mae Whitman's true "Fnl" love lies with bad boy Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch).
"I dream all about 'Friday Night Lights' every night," Whitman, who just started watching the series, told Salon.com. "Everything I dream is Riggins-influenced. I can’t get enough. It’s really kind of unhealthy ... I think it really burns [Lauria] up inside that all I do is talk about Riggins and the Panthers."
Whitman even went so far as to dress up as the Panthers legend for Halloween and tweeted pictures of her Halloween costume.

It was a coming together of directorial greats when Bollywood’s leading film director Karan Johar and South India’s finest Kamal Haasan interviewed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) when the Taiwanese-American director came to promote his new film Twentieth Century Fox’s Life Of Pi in India recently.
The candid interview saw Ang Lee talk about his new film Life Of Pi, which has been adapted from Yann Martel’s much-loved book, and also about his growing appreciation for Indian cinema. With a limited grasp of the world-wide phenomena that is Bollywood, Ang Lee admitted before the interview to not knowing who Karan Johar is. “Irrfan and Tabu are my two connects to Bollywood actors, but I read a bit about Karan and he sounded interesting to me”, said Ang.
As the two heavyweights of celluloid began their tete-a-tete, there emerged an in-depth and engaging conversation between the two.

The Muny closes their 2012 season with the revival of a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King And I. It's an elegant end to a very entertaining season that's been full of surprises. Here, the only surprise is how well this warhorse has aged, with its East meets West, or mismatched mates device still working to perfection. Of course, it helps if you have quality performances from the leads, combined with the energetic direction of Rob Ruggerio.

As many in the game industry (as well as those outside looking in) reflect on the tropes and treatment of women in games (and to a fair extent women and girl gamers), Lollipop Chainsaw hits the scene as a title that is, by design, guilty of the same tropes while gleefully upending them. Like Baoynetta, Lollipop Chainsaw is super aware of the kind of exploitative, hyper-sexual game it is, while at the same time giving us a giddily competent (and upbeat) heroine in chainsaw wielding zombie hunter Juliet Starling rambling around through an endless stream of horror and rock references, all set to a fantastic soundtrack.
Whether you think Suda51 and creative director/writer James Gunn went too far over the top or that they hit the sweet spot with winking at the audience just enough, it's a game whose content, points of reference, and ideas will be worth talking about for a while.

The 11th annual New York Asian Film Festival (June 29 through July 15) has announced its full schedule, which will showcase over 50 feature films and three programs of short films from Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the USA, and Vietnam.
Presented in partnership between Subway Cinema and the Film Society of Lincoln Center with programming support from Japan Society, America’s biggest festival of popular Asian film is opening with Vulgaria: Described as “astonishingly filthy,” “outrageous,” and “displaying a reckless abandon in mentioning genitals” Pang Ho-cheung’s show business satire pushes good taste as far as it can go, and then it keeps on going. What’s most astonishing about this lewd, crude, and hilariously dirty film is that it achieves all its shocking effects with nothing more than dialogue.
In addition, Doomsday Book and Guns And Roses make their North American premieres as the Centerpiece Selections.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen each stepped out on separate sides of the country yesterday. Gisele went shopping at East Meets West Antiques in La, where her new reportedly $20 million home with Tom was recently completed. Meanwhile, Tom was in NYC to attend the 40th anniversary gala for Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak timepiece at Park Avenue Armory. Last week, Tom was spotted on the West Coast checking out a Lakers game, but he's since switched his focus back to football. Tom apparently restructured his contract with the Patriots to give the team more available funds for their upcoming season.
