"Empire Records" is a movie that not a ton of people saw, but many of us who came up in the late '90s/early aughts remember the 1995 film quite fondly. The movie was directed by Allan Moyle (who will always be my hero for giving us "Pump Up the Volume") from a screenplay by Carol Heikkinen. It centers on a day -- Rex Manning Day! -- in the life of a ragtag group of record store employees as they try to stop their shop, Empire Records, from becoming just another Music Town.
I worked at an independent music store in the early 2000s, one that was doomed to eventually be sold to a large chain. I have clear memories of all of us saying, "Damn the man. Save the Empire!" on more than one occasion. Sadly, there was no saving CD World and we were all soon out of...

In the nineties, director Allan Moyle accomplished the rare feat of making two movies that wound up being considered cult classics. At the start of the decade, "Pump Up the Volume" starring Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis used pirate radio and a killer soundtrack to take down a corrupt high school. In 1995, "Empire Records" took down big business by saving the local record store with a last-minute fundraiser put on by a motley crew of Gen X outcasts. 20 years after "Empire Records" was released to little fanfare, it has become something of a social phenomenon with legions of fans who celebrate Rex Manning day every year on April 8 (the film is set on the same day).
Richard Linklater's "Slacker" and Moyle's "Pump Up the Volume" captured the malaise of the slacker generation on film, an era that culminated with Stephen Frears' "High Fidelity" starring John Cusack in 2000. Nestled perfectly...

Filmmaker-turned-singer/songwriter C.M. Talkington enlists actress Renee Zellweger for his new song “Two Steps,” the first single from Talkington’s upcoming second LP Texas Radio.
While recording his first LP, Not Exactly Nashville — an album that, following its March 2020 release, was ultimately lost into the void that was the Covid-19 pandemic — Talkington learned he had stage-3 colon cancer. The diagnosis inspired Talkington to reconnect with old friends, including Zellweger.
Talkington and Zellweger previously collaborated nearly 30 years earlier when the latter starred in the 1994 indie film Love and a .45, written and directed by Talkington.

The Movie: "Slc Punk"
Where you can stream it: HBO Max
The pitch: Growing up is hard to do, but it's hellish when you're a punk kid trapped in a puritanical place like Salt Lake City, Utah. "Slc Punk" is a coming-of-age story about Stevo (Matthew Lillard), a twenty-something punk living with his best friend Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) in a bare-bones warehouse apartment. Stevo's dad (Christopher McDonald) wants him to go to Harvard and become a lawyer, and Stevo had the grades for it but refused to "sell out." The movie follows Stevo as he tries to figure out what to do with his life, because the punk anarchy lifestyle isn't all that sustainable and he feels like he's spinning his wheels. Along the way we meet an entire cast of crazy but lovable characters, including Mark (Til Schweiger), a German drug dealer who just wants someone to talk to,...

Considering its status as an undeniable box office flop (making only about $304 thousand against its $10 million budget), it's odd that 1995's "Empire Records" continues to maintain such a strong chokehold on popular culture. Though the prospect of working in a record store has been all but obliterated by the new millennium, the fantasy thrives on — particularly among starry-eyed young adults who yearn to be employed alongside their buddies as arbiters of taste for a (minimum wage) living. Hell, the film has even inspired a musical — though it's been put on the Broadway back-burner indefinitely due to the pandemic.

“I want to say I wasn’t shocked, but I was shocked,” Lee Daniels told CNN this evening of his reaction to the murderous assault on Congress by a horde of Maga morons on January 6.
Joining Don Lemon on the AT&T-owned cable newser to promote his Golden Globe nominated The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Empire co-creator Daniels was unabashed in his response to the attempted coup by Donald Trump and his supporters. Diana Ross made her indelible film debut as the legendary Billie Holiday in 1972’s “Lady Sings the Blues,” earning both Globe and Oscar nominations for her performance and winning the newcomer award from the HFPA. Nearly 50 years later, Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day is making her film debut as Lady Day in Lee Daniel’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” which Hulu starts streaming on Feb. 12. Just as Ross, Day has earned a Golden Globe bid for Best Drama Actress and is considered a strong contender for a Best Actress Oscar nomination. (Ironically Ross’ son Evan plays a federal agent in this new movie.)
The film revolves around the federal government’s efforts to stop Holiday from singing “Strange Fruit,” the landmark song she introduced in 1939 which dealt with lynching in the South:
“Southern trees bear a strange fruit

On the most recent installment of the “Empire” magazine podcast, Quentin Tarantino names the Spahn Ranch sequence in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” one of “the best things that me and my team have ever accomplished” (via The Independent). The filmmaker, who scored a Best Director Oscar nomination for his work on the movie, goes as far as saying the set piece has more “terror” in it than Jonathan Demme’s famous climax to “The Silence of the Lambs,” which centered on Clarice Sterling’s night vision showdown with serial killer Buffalo Bill.
”There’s a difference between suspense and terror,” Tarantino said. “Suspense is what’s going to happen. Terror is [when] you’re afraid you know exactly what’s going to happen and you don’t want to see it. You think the worst.”

Quentin Tarantino recently sat down with Edgar Wright for a three-hour podcast conversation, courtesy of Empire magazine, in which the filmmakers discussed their most memorable moviegoing experiences. One of Tarantino’s more recent trips to the movie theater that proved unforgettable was for Todd Phillip’s “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix in an Oscar-winning performance. While Tarantino found the comic book drama “a little one-note,” he did single out the film’s violent climax as a masterclass in subversion.
“Subversion on a massive level, audience response, cause and effect on the screen, feeling the atmosphere in the theater change; we’ve talked about all these things,” Tarantino told Wright (via The Playlist). “[However], the talk show sequence in the ‘Joker’ encompasses all of these things on a profound level, a level that is over most viewers’ heads to tell you the truth.”

As you’ve probably heard, English filmmaker Edgar Wright—in the hope of backing the entire film industry and film publications—has curated the new issue of Empire magazine. It’s a noble effort, to be sure, and the issue contains many famous guests, but there’s one who wasn’t able to write a piece before the deadline at Wright’s request: his good friend Quentin Tarantino.

Edgar Wright and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige are back on good terms following a falling out that occurred during the development of “Ant-Man.” Speaking to Empire magazine, Wright revealed he reconnected with Feige while guest curating the magazine’s special “Greatest Cinema Moment Ever” issue. Wright was just months away from starting production on “Ant-Man” when he walked away from the movie over creative differences with Marvel. At the time of Wright’s exit, he already cast and wrote the Marvel movie with Joe Cornish. Payton Reed replaced Wright, but Wright and Cornish retained “story by” and co-screenwriter credits.
“I’ll be honest, I had not spoken to Kevin since I walked off ‘Ant-Man’ in 2014,” Wright said. “You know, there wasn’t any real animosity or outright hostility between us, it was all very diplomatic at the time, but in that situation you go your separate ways and there...

Put into development last summer, “The Wonder Years” reboot will be set in the same era as the original 1980s series, with “Dave” executive producer Saladin Patterson writing and executive producing. “Empire” creator Lee Daniels executive produces alongside Marc Velez of Lee Daniels Entertainment.
Original series star Fred Savage will direct the reboot pilot and executive produce, with “The Wonder Years” co-creator Neal Marlens serving as a consultant on the project from 20th Television.
The network has also picked up an untitled multi-camera comedy pilot from “Insecure” and “Girlfriends” veteran Regina Hicks.
The project, which counts Viola Davis, Julius Tennon and Larry Wilmore among its executive producers, centers on three former sorority sisters who lost touch after college as they reunite during a pivotal point in their lives.

Edgar Wright has assembled the ultimate celebration of movie theaters as the guest editor of Empire magazine’s “The Greatest Cinema Moments Ever” edition. The “Baby Driver” And “Shaun of the Dead” filmmaker rounded up 40 of Hollywood’s biggest names to share their most memorable theater experience, from Steven Spielberg to Chris Evans, Patty Jenkins, Spike Lee, Kevin Feige, Taika Waititi, Tessa Thompson, and Daisy Ridley. Empire has published Wright’s personal top 10 list, which includes the time he took a first date to the movie theater to watch David Fincher’s “Seven.”
“I maybe unwisely went on a first date to see ‘Seven’ — a first and last date,” Wright said. “‘Seven’ is maybe not a great idea for a date movie. People mention the Sloth moment, which is an expertly engineered shock — and the ending. With twist endings, you always get this little wave of anticipation of what’s coming.

After years of breaking into TV programs with commercials, Pepsi wants to get into a little show business of its own.

“I wasn’t aware of this full story,” admits “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” costume designer Paolo Nieddu about how the legendary singer was hounded by the FBI after the release of her anti-lynching protest song “Strange Fruit.” “I knew the iconic image of Billie Holiday with the white gardenia singing into the chrome microphone, and that was really it. I hadn’t really explored her life story.” We talked with Nieddu as part of our “Meet the Experts” costume designers panel. Watch our interview above.
Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day plays Holiday, whose struggle with drug addiction was used against her by the federal government. “The first thing I did actually was read her autobiography, ‘Lady Sings the Blues,'” Nieddu explains. “I heard her voice through this book. Exclusive: It’s been a long time since we’ve seen anything Marvel, and you can blame that squarely on the pandemic.
As the greater hope for a better 2021 occurs with incoming President Joe Biden looking to deliver 100 million vaccines doses in his first 100 days, fanboys and girls finally can calm down, for as of today, the first streaming series starring MCU characters, Disney+’s WandaVision, finally is seeing the light of day.
It’s been 20 months since Disney delivered the biggest-grossing movie ($2.8 billion) and global opening ($1.22B) of all-time with Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, and 563 days since Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home hit the big screen. While rival studios are trying to get their heads around marketing both their streaming fare and films, the WandaVision push was designed and implemented by the same theatrical marketing team (led by President Asad Ayaz) at Disney that was behind its...

GLAAD released its annual “Where We Are on TV” report on Thursday, revealing that LGBTQ representation declined year-over-year, at least in part due to pandemic-related production delays and cancellations.
The annual study found that 9.1% of series regulars (70 of 773) on broadcast in the 2020-21 TV season are LGBTQ, including characters like “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’s” Mo (Alex Newell) and The CW’s new Batwoman, played by Javicia Leslie. That’s down from the record high of 10.2% in 2019-20.
The study notes that the conclusion of series like “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Empire,” as well as the untimely cancellation of ABC’s “Stumptown,” took away a number of major LGBTQ characters.
In terms of sheer quantity, LGBTQ characters were also in short supply on cable and streaming this season, though the study does note that the total number of shows on the air decreased year-over-year due to the pandemic.

Jazz singer Billie Holiday endured lots of tragedy in her short four decades of life. Holiday’s torturous relationship to alcohol and drugs landed her in the crosshairs of the Federal Bureau of Investigation as early as 1939, which resulted in a pivotal trial in 1947 that all but tanked her career. The political undercurrents of her music, including her version of the lynching ballad “Strange Fruit,” also made her vulnerable to authorities at the time. That stormy period of Lady Day’s tragic life is the subject of Lee Daniels’ upcoming biographical drama “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” starring actress and Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day in the title role.
While originally a release set up at Paramount Pictures for February 2021, the studio sold the rights to the film to streamer Hulu in December. “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” has, so far, not had any festival play, but it comes...

Fans are sitting on the edge of their seat in anticipation of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which is set to open in theaters August 6, 2021. A sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 superhero-supervillain pic, the movie has a robust cast of characters. That said, Gunn took to Twitter to address whether or not all of them will survive. The short answer is: no.
In a tweet showcasing the new cast pic on the cover of Empire magazine, Gunn asked “What two characters do you think are most likely to survive #TheSuicideSquad?”
A fan remarked that Harley Quinn, King Shark and Amanda Waller are essentially protected and have “franchise armor” while there is an 80% chance all the other characters will die. Gunn responded: “No character was protected by DC. They gave me carte blanche to do what I wanted. That was one of the things we agreed to before I came to work for them.

There was a time when it looked as though Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was going to stand right alongside Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman as the Dceu’s marquee female character, as she was one of the main selling points of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and had a lot of hype building up behind her franchise debut.
Unfortunately, however, the disappointing reaction from both fans and critics towards that film forced Warner Bros. to shift gears, with Jared Leto’s Joker quietly being swept under the rug. Of course, Robbie got to lead her own superhero blockbuster, but the results were underwhelming. Birds of Prey did fairly well with reviews, but a global tally of only $201 million means it’s officially the lowest-grossing entry in the Dceu.

Exclusive: Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter has teamed with Asterlight, a San Francisco-based independent production company, to develop a true crime limited series based on the 2003 book Friends of the Family: The Inside Story of the Mafia Cops Case, by former NYPD Detective Tommy Dades, former Brooklyn prosecutor Mike Vecchione and David Fisher.
The book chronicles the true story of Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito, two decorated NYPD police detectives who secretly worked on behalf of the New York mafia, principally the Lucchese and Gambino crime families, while committing serious crimes including racketeering, bribery, kidnapping and murder.
The story made national headlines when it was exposed that Caracappa and Eppolito received thousands in monthly payoff money in exchange for confidential information on police informants and investigations, in addition to serving as mob assassins. CBS is in advanced discussions with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Simon Cowell to produce the next big music competition series, Variety has confirmed.
The show will be called “50 States to Stardom” and will mix a music competition with a unique documentary format in order to discover America’s next greatest talent. The docuseries will profile all 50 states in the U.S. and narrow down one talented musician from each one. The process will culminate in a showcase competition ending in the determination of the most talented musician in the country.
There will be a panel of carefully selected judges, but America will also have the chance to vote for who they think should be America’s next star. The docuseries will capture each contestant’s journey — both in the competition and outside of it — for a show that is both cinematic and realistic.

World conditions make this year’s Grammy voter choices in the visual-media categories somewhat harder to predict, in part because so many of us have been staying home watching television. So while some score nominees are likely to come from late-2019 releases, including Hildur Guðnadóttir’s Oscar-winning “Joker,” John Williams’ “StarWars: The Rise of Skywalker,” Thomas Newman’s “1917,” Randy Newman’s “Marriage Story” and Alexandre Desplat’s “Little Women”), final choices could easily include streaming content which, while eligible, has rarely made the nominations list.
Terence Blanchard’s score for Netflix’s “Da 5 Bloods” is a strong candidate, as are recent Emmy winners like Labrinth’s “Euphoria,” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “Watchmen,” both on HBO, and Ludwig Göransson’s “The Mandalorian” on Disney Plus.

In a recent interview, Cavill, who plays Superman in the DC film series, has reflected on his "super awkward" Justice League experience acknowledging that it was a "weird situation".
Speaking to Empire podcast, Henry Cavill recalled his confusing presence on the 2017 press tour, due to the fact that his character was supposed to be dead following the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
"It was one of those weird situations where I guess… no one really knew what they wanted, and it was like 'Hey, we need Henry on the press tour, but let's not tell anyone he's in the movie,'" Henry Cavill explained during the podcast.
"I was like 'Okay, well, it's going to be super awkward for me, guys. Thank you for giving me an impossible scenario.
