The Telephone Box (1972)

An obvious rec for International Find a Pay Phone Booth Day (March 10) is La Cabina (a.k.a. The Telephone Box). This Spanish, made-for-tv short-film turns a silly situation into surreal horror. José Luis López Vázquez‘s unfortunate character enters a freshly installed phone booth, only to then learn it neither works nor allows him to leave. As onlookers gather around and fail to help him,...

Cinephiles will probably want to sit down for this news: Terrence Malick and Jonny Greenwood are teaming up. The director is executive producing the virtual reality project “Evolver,” which is set to feature original music from Greenwood. The project was originally announced to be included at the upcoming Vr Days Europe, in collaboration with the Rotterdam International Film Festival (via ScreenDaily), but it has since been confirmed not to be heading there next year.
“Evolver” allows users to experience the lifespan of the human condition, from birth to death. The project is produced by House of Secrets, an animation and Vr studio located in the Netherlands, and features new music not only from Greenwood but also from Wu-Tang Clan and more. Greenwood earned an Oscar nomination earlier this year for his work on Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread,” and handled score duties on Lynne Ramsay’s “You Were Never Really Here.

Released at the height of the straight to video techno-horror phase that rode in on the coat-tails of The Lawnmower Man and also saw the release of films such as Evolver and Brainscan, Arcade was, I think, unfairly overlooked, at least in the UK, at the time due to poor distribution, a lack of big-name stars (unlike Brainscan which had a post-T2 Edward Furlong, the biggest stars in Arcade were A Christmas Story’s Peter Billingsley and St:tng’s John De Lancie), and effects that – even though they were apparently redone after the film was completed – did not compare to other CGI-heavy films at the time.
