Although 2024 marks another year where I won’t make it to SXSW in person, I’m lucky enough to have access to the majority of short films screening at the festival, and so have binge-watched my way through them over the last week. Animation undoubtedly reigns supreme this year, with half of my 10 favourites being animated pieces, but as always at SXSW, there’s a diverse programme of films, from moving docs to Wtf classics.
Here are the 10 titles that caught my attention in the 2024 line-up:
A Crab in the Pool – Alexandra Myotte & Jean-Sébastien Hamel
A truly surprising short, A Crab in the Pool initially sucks you in with its strange introduction to the world of two siblings left to fend for themselves on a hot summer’s day, before leaving you reeling from the gut-punch impact of its narrative. Reminiscent of a contemporary Mike Judge animation, but with a surreal twist,...

Ahead of the release of Smokey Robinson’s Gasms, his first album of new material in 14 years, the soul legend has shared the latest single, “How You Make Me Feel.”
As opposed to the ultra-horny Gasms songs like the title track and the not-so-subtle “I Fit In There,” “How You Make Me Feel” is a groovy slow jam where Robinson professes his love with some clever wordplay and tasteful double entendres.

Motown legend Smokey Robinson is set to return with his first album of all new material in over decade, and he’s left absolutely nothing to the imagination with the title: Gasms.
The silk-voiced singer-songwriter teased the LP with a new single, “If We Don’t Have Each Other,” which finds Robinson delivering devoted lines over sultry guitar and snappy production.
“I chose this song as the first single of my new album because it’s different musically and has a slide dance feeling to it… which is different from...

The other day I had a minor epiphany while reading Tubefilter’s story about the person behind the current most-watched channel on YouTube. No, it wasn’t PewDiePie. And it wasn’t Justin Bieber. It was a four-year-old.
In July alone, toy-unboxing videos by Ryan_ToysReview attracted an astonishing 585.3 million views on YouTube. And here’s what really caught my attention. His parents/producers say his core audience is 3- to 7-year-olds. That’s a lot of toddlers taking to the tablets.
On the one hand, it makes perfect sense. Ryan is one of them, a diminutive stand-in for all their 4-year-old fantasies of opening new toys and playing with them. It’s Christmas every day! What kid doesn’t want to see that?
But then I thought back to my recent conversation with Seth Shapiro about how, back in the early days of network TV, Leonard Goldenson triangulated struggling...

Happy Thanksgiving Nerds.
While it was once the case that calling someone a Nerd or a Geek was traditionally a preface to half-drowning them in a toilet or locking them in their locker, but now it’s a title to be proud of.
As the last month of 2015 begins and the Year Of The Geek – 2016 – looms large, the upcoming film slate is enough to make you think it’s Christmas every day. There’s enough on the calendar in the next twelve months to make having a cinematic Thanksgiving a necessity every month…

It’s that glorious time of year when everyone is forced to put up with their family because they’re trapped in a room together for the entire day. Only excessive alcohol and the occasional back-handed comment about an unwanted gift can get you through it.
Sadly, the soundtrack to this bickering is usually the same old dirge that’s regurgitated by whoever’s in charge of the music every year. Are you sick of the sound of warble-voiced lunatic Mariah Carey screech her way through All I Want For Christmas? Do you ache to remove the vocal chords of balloon-faced crooner Michael Buble and his ubiquitous schmoozing of the Christmas market?
Perhaps you just fancy a change from the same sickly repetitive poison that’s poured into your delicate little ears every Christmas? We love you, Noddy Holder, but no. No more! Wizzard, if your wish came true...

Mick Foley is a former WWE Champion and one of the most recognizable names in wrestling lore. However, he is no stranger to projects outside of the squared circle and has pursued comedy, book writing, TV shows and many other things. Mick is the star in holiday documentary, I Am Santa Claus and recently chatted with BuzzFocus to share all things from being Santa to being beaten down by The Rock.
Thanks Mick for chatting with us today. So the first question is how does I Am Santa Claus stand out against everything else you’ve accomplished on TV and movies.
Mick Foley: Oh man, any documentary is a labor of love and you set out with realistic goals to make a really good movie that you hope people will eventually find. I really enjoyed being a part of it not only on screen, but also behind the scenes helping to shape it.

Mickey Mouse leads the festive fun alongside Disney stalwarts Donald Duck and Goofy in a trio of colourful tales for Christmas. In 'Donald Duck Stuck on Christmas', Donald's nephews Huey, Louie and Dewey get more than they bargained for when they wish it could be Christmas every day. As you can probably guess, 'A Very Goofy Christmas' speaks for itself while in 'Mickey and Minnie's Gift of the Magi', our rodent hero and his best girl prove that it's much sweeter to give than receive.

The X Factor finalists have been given portraits - made out of Christmas food.
Luke Friend, Sam Bailey and Nicholas McDonald's faces have been painstakingly made out of turkey and sprouts by Britain's Got Talent star Nathan Wyburn, who previously wowed audiences with his toast and marmite picture of Simon Cowell.
He has now used two kilos of turkey, 144 slices of ham, 89 sprouts, 168 carrot batons, five large Christmas puddings and some mince pies to create stunning likenesses of the X Factor finalists.
The close-up shots of the pictures show pigs in blankets making up Friend's famous dreadlocks and sprouts, peas and carrots creating a rather fetching green jacket for McDonald.
The images were commissioned by Hotpoint, who are promoting their new range of small appliances, and took 36 hours to create.

From the Nutcracker to American Psycho, from Mary Poppins to Kurt Vile, our critics pick their must-sees of the festive season
If you wish it could be Christmas every day
Nutcrackers, various
You know it's Christmas in the ballet world by the number of Nutcrackers touring the world's stages. In the UK alone, there are close to a dozen doing the rounds, but the top three remain the Royal Ballet's exquisitely traditional version, the sparky family friendly production by Birmingham Royal Ballet, and English National Ballet's – with the best snow scene of them all. Royal Opera House, London (020-7304 4000), 4 December to 16 January; Birmingham Hippodrome (0844 338 5000), to 12 December; London Coliseum (020-7845 9300), 11 December to 5 January.
Father Christmas
Does Father Christmas use the loo? Does he secretly long for summer? Does he have strong views on the size of chimneys? You bet he does. Raymond Briggs's gorgeous picture book gets a heartwarming makeover for under-sixes.

One of Britain's best young film directors on the music, books and art currently catching his eye
Considered by many critics to be one of Britain's most significant young directors, Essex-born Ben Wheatley's career began when his short films went viral. After directing comedy series Modern Toss for Channel 4, he wrote, produced and directed his first feature film, Down Terrace (2009), shot it in eight days, and won numerous awards. Following his horror film Kill List (2011), Wheatley directed Sightseers (2012), a dark comedy about a couple on a caravan trip, which enjoyed international critical acclaim. His fourth film, A Field in England, will be released this summer.
Technology: Spotify
I use Spotify tons, it's totally opened my mind to music. I've always thought that music was expensive; back in the days of CDs I'd buy maybe one a year and feel very resentful about it. But now, through the wonders of Spotify,...

When last we met…
Off to Gertz we went! Gertz was the department store back in the day. When we got there my mother walked right to the toy department and brought me Captain Action and the Batman and Superman costume changes.
At that point I had to wonder, who was this woman and what had she done with my mother.
This was entirely way to good to be true.
As I would find out soon it certainly was.
I found out later that, what was a great Saturday turned crappy, why my mother was so quick to buy me Captain Action, which I just knew, was the last thing I would ever want or need.
My stepdad (who at the time I thought was my real dad; long sad story) told my mother earlier in the day he would not be...

Alicia Guastaferro, the insufferable teen beauty queen who appeared on the ABC reality TV show "Wife Swap," has been arrested and charged with prostitution.
The pampered princess, whose upstate New York family celebrated Christmas every day of the year, was arrested Monday in the company of a 54-year-old attorney, according to police.
Authorities charged Guastaferro, 20, of Williamsville, with criminal impersonation, prostitution, and possession of a controlled substance. Her alleged john -- Rochester area attorney James D. Guastaferro told investigators she was paid to perform sex acts on Doyle, state police said. The attorney denied the allegations.

You guys, this is really becoming like Christmas every day. Justin Bieber is clearly thinking to himself, "What paparazzi fight? On to the next single!" He's revealed yet again another single and truth be told, I Love It. Thankyouverymuch. "All Around the World" features Ludacris and is sure to be one of the biggest songs of the summer. If his tour is able to sell out within an hour than there's no way this album Believe won't be flying off the shelves once it arrives in stores on June 19.
"Im actually gonna get some rest tonight. u guys can #Bieberblast early!! #Allaroundtheworld is Out Now on iTunes!" the 18-year-old singer tweeted about the new song.
Obviously his voice has been changing since his "Baby" days but if someone played this song for me without telling me the artist I would have no idea it was him. Too watered down? Who Cares.

Prolific writer who enjoyed her greatest success with the recycling Wombles
Elisabeth Beresford, who has died aged 84, enjoyed her greatest success with the creation of the Wombles. The family motto of the colourful underground creatures – "making good use of bad rubbish" – sprang from a concern of the writer's that chimed with the growing ecological awareness of the next four decades. Famously, the inspiration for the figures came on a Boxing Day walk on Wimbledon Common, south-west London, during which her daughter, Kate, misnamed it Wombledon Common.
As elsewhere with Beresford's work, the point of departure was real – here, the place and the characters, largely drawn from uncles, grandparents, siblings and her children: Marcus, her son, genial and interested in food, inspired Orinoco; Kate inspired Bungo, a strong character in the books, though not in the films.

Remember the wonderful early '90s sound of Wilson Phillips on songs like "Hold On," "Release Me" and "You're in Love"? Well, they are back with a Christmas album, "Christmas in Harmony," available for download and in stores now. It's the group's first album since 2004.
Wilson Phillips consists of sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) and Chynna Phillips (daughter of Michelle and John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas).
The track list from the album is below. We're sad "Hey Santa" isn't on the list -- their 1993 original holiday hit is a favorite of ours. You can also watch the lovely ladies perform "Winter Wonderland" on "Good Morning America" in the above video.
1. "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day"
2. "Little Drummer Boy"
3."Warm Lovin' Christmastime"
4."When A Child Is Born"
5."Christmastime"
6. "Silent Night"
7. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"
8. "Silver Bells...

From a part-time Christmas tree to the 90-minute portrait of Zinedine Zidane, artist Philippe Parreno tells Stuart Jeffries why he has always got one eye on the clock
'Do you know the average time a visitor spends in front of a work of art in the Louvre?" asks Philippe Parreno over coffee in his Paris studio. "Only three seconds! Crazy when you think about it." Absolutely – that's no way to treat the Mona Lisa or any of the Louvre's 35,000 artworks.
"At the Met in New York it's 10 seconds. I don't know why there's that difference." Maybe it's because the cakes are better in the Louvre cafe. Or perhaps it's because of Jean-Luc Godard's 1964 film Bande à Part, in which three characters try to break the world record for running through the Louvre. It takes them nine minutes 43 seconds, which probably drags down average artwork viewing times.
These are not small matters.
