Brubaker, who penned the pilot script, will co-showrun the TV series with crime fiction author Jordan Harper (Hightown). Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden will direct the first four episodes.
Criminal is produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The series is executive produced by Brubaker and Harper, alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, and Phillip Barnett.

Patricia Arquette is an Emmy favorite nowadays, and she’s not even “High Desert’s” most decorated performer. Between her, Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond”), Rupert Friend (“Homeland”) and Bernadette Peters (“Ally McBeal”), the main cast of Apple TV+’s upcoming comedy series from “Miss Congeniality” writer Katie Ford and creative partners Nancy Fichman and Jennifer Hoppe-House has a total of 16 acting nominations and five wins.
Set in Yucca Valley, California, “High Desert” follows addict and former dealer Peggy Newman (Arquette), who decides to become a private investigator following her mother’s (Peters) death. Along Peggy’s hazardous journey toward self-discovery, she meets the uptight business owner who hires her (Garrett) and an anchorman-turned-desert-shaman (Friend). After two years of virtual festivals, Sundance is overdue for a comeback. The Park City event is set to return to Park City on January 19 and continue through January 29. While films will still be available to online ticket holders starting January 24, the main emphasis will be the in-person experience that put Sundance on the map in the first place.
While the pandemic disrupted the film industry in 2020, Sundance managed to take place that year just before the shutdowns, launching future Best Picture winner “Coda” into an unpredictable landscape. Now, the market and culture of moviegoing remains in flux, and Sundance is poised to return to the scene just in time to launch a wide array of movies into that ever-changing climate.
And there are a lot of movies in contention. After countless productions were put on hold at the start of the pandemic, they’ve been revving back to action over the past year,...

There was a lingering feeling of ambiguity and anticipation on Sunday night at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, the site of 20th Century Studios’ worldwide premiere of David O. Russell’s “Amsterdam.”
Russell has not released a new film in nearly seven years — his last feature was 2015’s “Joy” with Jennifer Lawrence. Given his various controversies and 2011 sexual assault allegation, it was unclear whether Hollywood would re-embrace the director with open arms. And then Drake walked out on stage.

Lily Tomlin, whose latest film, Moving On, premieres at the festival on Sept. 9, first came to Toronto 18 years ago with I Heart Huckabees, director David O. Russell’s trippy dark comedy about two detectives (Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman) tasked with identifying the meaning of their clients’ existences.
The Hollywood Reporter’s review of the heady ensemble film, which also stars Isabelle Huppert, Jude Law, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg and Naomi Watts, praised the “unique premise and some truly inspired casting” but lamented that the movie “remains stuck in an existential rut of its own.” Fox Searchlight released Huckabees in October 2004 to a modest box office response, pulling in a worldwide total of 20 million. But the film perhaps drew more attention for what went down off-camera, thanks to tension between Tomlin and Russell during production.

When Heather Matarazzo’s indelible film debut “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” went to the Sundance Film Festival in 1996, the young star didn’t attend. “I didn’t go,” she told IndieWire during a recent interview. “Sony wouldn’t pay for me.” Now, it’s hard to imagine a breakout star of Matarazzo’s caliber, let alone the lead of a Grand Jury Prize winner, not being feted in the mountains of Park City.
At the time — and, as a tween herself — she wasn’t fazed by the decision on the part of distributor Sony Pictures Classics. “I didn’t know what a big deal it was,” she said.
Matarazzo’s performance as Dawn Wiener was a shock to the system. In Solondz’s pastel-colored New Jersey suburbia, Dawn is a gangly 11-year-old with glasses whose classmates call her “lesbo” and whose teachers chide her for being a “grade grubber.” Matarazzo,...

Throughout his many career ups-and-downs, five-time Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell has carved out a place for himself with a series of singularly eccentric, screwy films. Let’s take a look back at all eight of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958, Russell made his filmmaking debut with the incest comedy “Spanking the Monkey” (1994), which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and brought his Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay victories at the Independent Spirit Awards. The screwball farce “Flirting with Disaster” (1996) quickly followed, which earned him additional writing and directing bids at the Indie Spirits. He achieved a huge critical and commercial success with the Gulf War satire “Three Kings” (1999), for which he competed at the Writers Guild of America in Best Original Screenplay.

In the engrossing new Apple TV+ thriller Severance, Adam Scott plays Mark, a man who literally has no life outside of work — well, half the time, anyway.
Let me explain. The show takes place in a world where corporate employees can volunteer for a “severance” procedure that completely separates their memories of their time at the office from their memories of everything else. So there are essentially two Marks: the “innie,” who only exists in and around the sub-basement cubicle where he does some inscrutable kind of data entry, and the “outie,...

How do you separate your work and home-life selves? Is it even possible at all? That’s the question at the heart of the new Apple TV+ series “Severance,” from director Ben Stiller and creator Dan Erickson. George Segal, whose long career included playing Albert “Pops” Solomon on “The Goldbergs,” and garnering an Oscar nom for supporting actor for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” died Tuesday. He was 87.
His wife Sonia announced his death, saying, “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.”
Segal’s longtime manager Abe Hoch said, “I am saddened by the fact that my close friend and client of many years has passed away. I will miss his warmth, humor, camaraderie and friendship. He was a wonderful human.”
Some of the top directors of the 1960s and ’70s, including Robert Altman, Mike Nichols, Paul Mazursky and Sidney Lumet cast Segal for his gently humorous everyman quality, and he often played an unlucky-in-love professional or a writer who gets in over his head.

David O. Russell is known for being a pretty intense director both when the cameras are rolling, and when they’re not. On the set of “I Heart Huckabees,” he famously tore into Lily Tomlin, who was having known of it, and during the making of “American Hustle,” Amy Adams told GQ he made her cry during “most days.” While “Silver Linings Playbook” supporting star Julia Stiles hasn’t revealed quite so severe an experience, she did open up to the Av Club about her time on the set, Russell’s “jarring” directing style, and the fact that he “constantly talks throughout your take,” to irritating but disarming effect. When David O. Russell made “Three Kings” in 1999, it was one of the most definitive films on the Gulf War. At the time, the director had worked on shorts “Hairway to the Stars” and “Bingo Inferno: A Parody on American Obsessions.” He had also worked on features “Spanking the Monkey” and “Flirting with Disaster.” The film came after “Courage on Fire,” and with a distinctive look courtesy of Dp Newton Thomas Siegel, provided an incredible satirical look at war.
Speaking at the Santa Barbara Film Festival this past weekend, Russell attended a post-q&a screening to mark the film’s 20th anniversary. “It was considered a strange thing,” Russell told Roger Durling, the film festival chief.
Strange as it might have been, the film opens with a great moment as Mark Walhberg runs into the frame, saying, “Are we shooting?” It’s not precisely clear, but then he repeats, “Are we shooting people or what?...

When Ben Stiller agreed to direct all eight hours of the true prison escape saga “Escape at Dannemora” (Showtime), he had no idea what he was in for. The director of six movies had never helmed a mini-series or series, except for his sketch comedy “The Ben Stiller Show” in the early ’90s; he had directed one pilot (Fox’s “Heat Vision and Jack”). “It was new territory for me,” he said on the phone. “I didn’t know what it would involve.”
When Stiller read the scripts brought to him by showrunners Michael Tolkin and Brett Johnson (“Ray Donovan”), he knew the story had been fictionalized. “I didn’t know enough about what actually happened,” he said. “I read the Inspector General’s 160-page report and decided to start from scratch. They were my partners throughout. We’d block out what the episodes would be, but they’d have to sit down and write.

David O. Russell celebrates his 61st birthday on August 20, 2019. Throughout his many career ups-and-downs, the five-time Oscar-nominated director has carved out a place for himself with a series of singularly eccentric, screwy films. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at all eight of his films, ranked worst to best.

Ben Stiller and Patricia Arquette were co-stars in David O. Russell’s 1996 “Flirting With Disaster.” At the time, Stiller’s directing career limited to “The Ben Stiller Show” and “Reality Bites;” his now-cult favorite “The Cable Guy” was about to flop. Arquette was a burgeoning star and indie film darling thanks to her work in “True Romance” and “Ed Wood,” but she had yet to snag her Oscar, let alone the preceding Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
Now the two are reinventing themselves, again. Each transform for the viewer in real time — figuratively for Stiller, quite literally with Arquette — in “Escape at Dannemora,” Showtime’s seven-part limited series about two inmates breaking out of the Clinton Correctional facility in 2015 and the woman who helped them do it. Each transform for the viewer in real time — figuratively for Stiller, quite literally with Arquette — in “Escape at Dannemora,” Showtime’s seven-part limited series about two inmates breaking out of the Clinton Correctional facility in 2015 and the woman who helped them do it. A TV icon for sure, star one of the best sitcoms of all time, but Mary Tyler Moore left a mark with her big screen work including her Oscar-nominated turn in the 1980 Best Picture winner Ordinary People. She co-starred with Charles Bronson in X-15, Elvis in a A Change Of Habit, Julie Andrews in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and played Ben Stiller’s mom in David O. Russel’s Flirting With Disaster. Her Ordinary People performance was wonderful and incredibly surprising at the time but it’s her TV work, from Happy Hotpoint, the Hotpoint Appliance elf in the mid-50’s, to The Dick Van Dyke Show to her winning three Emmys as Mary Richards on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The most unforgettable moment from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, out of dozens of contenders: Mary sits at the bar with her newsroom co-workers, drinking their sorrows away. They've had a grim day – her cranky boss Lou Grant just attended his ex-wife's wedding, while he's still reeling from the divorce, so the others tagged along for moral support. Pompous anchorman Ted Baxter tries to lighten the mood with a knock-knock joke. Lou growls, "Ted, this better be a pretty funny knock-knock joke. I lost a wife today." It's a godawful joke.

Greenwich, Conn. – She was the ideal woman for two generations of TV viewers, first in the 1960s as wife Laura to comedy writer Rob Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” and then in the 1970s as feminist breakthrough Mary Richards on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Ms. Moore died on January 25, 2016, near her home in Greenwich, Conn. She was 80.
Mary Tyler Moore always seemed to be as the right place at the right time in her TV career, redefining the role models of women on TV in her roles as Laura Petrie and Mary Richards. As the fashionable and daffy Laura on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (1961-66) she was equal to her husband Rob, as they portrayed the TV equivalent of John and Jackie Kennedy during its run. As Mary Richards on the show with her name on it (1970-77), she went one better. She was a career...
