Dark Winds and Blood Quantum actor Kiowa Gordon and Sera-Lys McArthur (Café Daughter, Outlander) have joined the cast of Many Wounds, a contemporary re-imagining of Lee Tamahori’s ground-breaking 1994 Maori film Once Were Warriors, set among indigenous communities in Canada.
Skye Pelletier (Prey) stars in Many Wounds as Mashka, a young teenager on the cusp of being swallowed up by a colonial system meant to further the goals of assimilation who becomes a warrior to protect his family.
Ojibway filmmaker Jeremy Torrie, who wrote and is directing Many Wounds, and producing the film together with Métis producer Tanya Brunel, said he drew on his own personal, painful experiences growing up indigenous in Winnipeg for the script.
“Our intention with this film is to reveal some uncomfortable truths about the effects of generations of forced assimilation and genocide by the Canadian government toward our peoples for a society largely unaware of how deep the wounds go,...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Mentorship was a big part of Lively’s life. From the late ’80s through most of the ’90s, he coached Hollywood’s young working actors, such as Brittany Murphy, Casper Van Dien and Jason Priestley.
The Maryland native was born in Baltimore in January 1947 and earned his first acting credit at age 28 with an appearance on “The Waltons.

Chicago – Some have embraced Lee Daniels’ super-weird “The Paperboy,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, as pure pulp entertainment, the kind of sexy, sweaty, ridiculous B-movie that they don’t make enough of any more. Others have called it absolute trash with The Onion A.V. Club going as far as to name it the worst movie of the year. I’m much closer to The Onion in this case. As hard as I tried to get on the wavelength of this film’s growing cult movie reputation, I couldn’t shake the fact that it’s just a piece of junk.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
Part of the problem with “The Paperboy” (and there are many parts) is that Daniels cannot decide how seriously he wants to be taken. His story is high camp but he injects it with social commentary about civil and gay rights and the blend never works. There...

The rapidly expanding Los Angeles of the 1940s and 50s – the time when the aeronautics industry was becoming prominent, the freeway system being built, Disneyland was launched and the Chicago and east coast mob was moving in on Nevada and southern California – has become a favourite subject of the period crime film these past 20 years. It began with Barry Levinson's Bugsy, set in this new criminal milieu, and Lee Tamahori's Mulholland Falls, which centred on the ruthless cops hired to tackle these largely Jewish newcomers (known as the "Kosher Nostra"). It continued with two films based on James Ellroy's fact-based novels, La Confidential and The Black Dahlia. The vicious New York gangster and former featherweight boxer Mickey Cohen came west via Chicago, sent by Murder Inc's Meyer Lansky to assist Ben "Bugsy" Siegel. In Bugsy, Cohen was on his way up in the mid-1940s and impersonated by Harvey Keitel,...

There are all kinds of producers: hucksters, hustlers, con men and schlockmeisters. Some are in it for the glory, some like to walk the red carpet with a starlet on their arm. For some, the biggest award is a box office hit and it doesn’t matter what kind of crap they throw on the screen to earn it. There are producers like Harvey Weinstein who will spend more money to promote himself to an Oscar win than he does on actually making the Oscar-winning film. And there are producers like Joel Silver who once said the only proper role for women in film was either as a dead body or naked.
And there are those – who, to be honest, may also have a touch of all of this – who are mainly driven by a desire to make good movies. Like Dick Zanuck.
I don’t think anyone will argue...

Los Angeles – Producer Richard D. Zanuck was a Prince of Hollywood. The son of Darryl Zanuck – the founder of 20th Century Fox Studios and one of the early movie moguls – Richard nevertheless made his own mark in the business, producing iconic and Oscar winning films such as “The Sting” (1973), “Jaws” (1975) and “Driving Miss Daisy” (1992). Zanuck died Friday of a heart attack, according to his publicist Jeff Sanderson. He was 77.

I asked him about his relationship with Burton, since he also produced the director’s remakes of “Planet of the Apes” (2001), “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (2005) and the recent “Dark Shadows” (2012). When you release the first trailer for a film, it says a lot about what that movie's meant to be, and sometimes, it's not really what you expect. From the moment Warner Bros. started putting together "Gangster Squad," which was still called "Tales From The Gangster Squad" at that point, it seemed like it would fit neatly into a tradition of "La Confidential" and "Mulholland Falls," movies about the history of the police in Los Angeles using real life as a jumping-off point. And while today's trailer does indeed seem to confirm that, what I found surprising was the tone of...

Woody Harrelson's outing as a dirty cop joins a long tradition of films, novels and TV drawing on the violent history of Los Angeles' police force
In the scorching drama Rampart, Woody Harrelson takes to his role as Dave Brown, dirty Lapd cop, like a starving man to a groaning banquet table. Co-written by director Oren Moverman and James Ellroy, Rampart, named after the infamous division that imploded under allegations of massive corruption, is set in 1999, the year that scandal unfolded. Brown is more "bent for the job" than "bent for himself", but his excesses make front-page news after he's filmed brutally beating a suspect, Rodney King-style.
The movie chronicles the personal apocalypse of a man whose lucky streak is running out, who chugs scotch in his squad car; maintains dual households with two ex-wives (Cynthia Nixon and Anne Heche), sisters by whom he has a kid apiece...

Actor Daniel Baldwin has spoken out about his split from wife Joanne, insisting the troubled marriage was threatening his sobriety.
The Mulholland Falls star filed for divorce earlier this year only to dismiss his petition and work on the marriage in August.
But now his wife his filed for divorce and the actor accepts he's better off as a single man, looking after the couple's kids.
Baldwin, who met his wife while he was receiving treatment in a rehab facility in 2007, claims Joanne's drinking was becoming a problem for him.
He tells E! News, "There have been situations that have arisen in my life with my relationship with Joanne that put my sobriety in great peril."
The actor alleges his wife's drinking problem was what led him to first file for divorce - and a restraining order - in July.
He explains, "She had too much to drink that evening. This escalated to my waking up to the house being trashed... The kids (woke) up, crying. They don't understand what's going on. My daughter inevitably hears just about everything said in that house.
"There was a heated statement about taking my life, a threat, and my child reiterated that: 'Is Mommy going to kill us?' And when she asked me that question, I had such a sunken (feeling)... A child should never... have to ask that question."
The incident reminded Baldwin of a chat he had with his former sister-in-law, Kim Basinger, after she split from brother Alec - about what not to say in front of their daughter, Ireland.
He recalls, "I had a conversation with Kim when I said, 'He's (Alec) the greatest father, he loves his daughter... Go into the courtroom and cut his head off, if that's what you think you need to do, but in front of that child, none of that should come out.'"
Now he can only hope his divorce battle will be quick, painless and kept away from his daughters: "My hope and my prayer for this whole situation is for us to move on and be co-parenting with our children in the best possible way we can and never let them see any of this stuff again."...

Actor Daniel Baldwin's daughters have been removed from their mother's care by child welfare officials amid fears for their safety.
The Mulholland Falls star's estranged wife Joanne received a visit from Department of Human Services representatives in Oregon on Wednesday night, after officials decided to take the couple's two young daughters away.
They were placed under the care of a family friend until Thursday night when Baldwin will return home from shooting a movie.
In a statement issued to Eonline.com, Baldwin says, "Sadly I must report that my daughters, Avis and Finley, have been removed from their mother's home by the Department of Human Services in Oregon last night.
"Dhs is sighting multiple potential improprieties and the children's welfare as reasons for this action. The children were removed from Joanne's home and given to a family friend and are in this friend's custody until I return from filming in Texas (on) Thursday night.
"At this time, in accordance with Dhs's directive, the children will return to my care. I am sad for all involved but feel that this measure was in the girls' best interest. I love my beautiful babies and will continue to be the caring protective parent I have always been."
The incident took place on the same day it emerged the Baldwins' divorce is back on. Joanne filed papers earlier this month, weeks after the actor agreed to dismiss his initial petition in August.
In the divorce papers, Joanne requested sole custody of their two girls and demanded $4,000 (£2,500)-per-month in child support.
The couple wed in 2007.

Back in 2006, Nick Nolte co-starred in a small sports drama called Peaceful Warrior (not to be confused with the upcoming sports drama Warrior), as a mysterious trainer/gas station attendant named Socrates. It was not a strong film. Or a strong performance. It was, in fact, the end of a near half-decade’s string of not-strong performances in not-strong films.
This was nothing new. The man had slumped quite similarly in the mid-90s (watch the awful Mulholland Falls for proof). Actor Daniel Baldwin is asking a U.S. judge to dismiss his divorce petition after reconciling with his troubled wife.
The Mulholland Falls star filed legal papers to end his four-year marriage to Joanne last month, amid claims she was addicted to alcohol and drugs.
He also obtained a restraining order against his wife after accusing her of threatening his life in a series of recent arguments at their Oregon home - and he was handed temporary custody of their two daughters, Avis, three, and Finley, one.
Joanne Baldwin's alleged drink problem hit the headlines again days after the divorce news first surfaced, when she was arrested for driving under the influence and ordered to serve 10 days behind bars.
But Baldwin wants to give their marriage another go - he had the restraining order dropped on Thursday and he's now seeking to have his divorce case thrown out, too, reports TMZ.com.

Daniel Baldwin has told of his heartbreak over his estranged wife's alleged alcohol addiction, after struggling with his own substance abuse demons for years.
The Mulholland Falls star filed for divorce from Joanne earlier this month, and was granted a restraining order against his spouse and temporary custody of their two daughters after admitting he fears for their safety.
Joanne was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence, and Baldwin admits he is devastated watching his partner "disintegrate".
He tells CNN news host Piers Morgan, "I've never been on the opposite side of the continuum... The only good thing that has come out of (my addiction) has been the fact that in the 12-step programme, step nine is that you make amends to those that you have harmed... I've had to go back to a number of people in my family, loved ones, and say, 'My God, I'm so sorry. I had no idea what you were feeling.'
"I knew what I did. But I never had to feel it before. Now I'm on the opposite side of the continuum. And it's just an awful and helpless feeling to watch someone that you love disintegrate."
But Baldwin admits he is open to a reconciliation with his wife if she gets clean.
He adds, "She needs to understand that this (the divorce) is an ultimatum now. I can always reverse that or stop that should she decide to get some help...
"I won't rule any of those things out right now... Right now I filed for divorce. I intend on getting divorced. I have a protection order for myself and my children because I cannot control what someone else does... So I have to do what I have to do. My first responsibility has to be to my personal well-being and, moreover, my children and their personal well-being."
The couple married in 2007.

Daniel Baldwin's estranged wife has asked a judge to lift a restraining order the actor filed against her so she can spend time at home with the couple's two children.
The Mulholland Falls star made legal moves to divorce Joanne earlier this month, after citing his desire to protect himself and their two daughters, Avis, three and Finley, one.
He was granted a protective order against his spouse after alleging she suffers from a serious drinking problem.
He also obtained temporary custody of their children after a fight at the family's Oregon home turned nasty. Baldwin called police to intervene, claiming his intoxicated wife had attacked him in front of the kids.
But Joanne, who was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) just days after the incident, is fighting back in legal papers of her own, accusing Baldwin of kicking her out of the family home without any money to survive.
She is appealing to have the restraining order removed for the sake of her girls, stating: "I am a stay at home mum and my children need me as I (need) them."
The Baldwins, who married in 2007, are expected to fight it out in court over custody next month, reports TMZ.com.

Things have gone from bad to worse for actor Daniel Baldwin's wife - she has been arrested for a DUI just hours after the Mulholland Falls star filed for divorce and won a restraining order against her.

In light of his directorial debut, the intense 1994 drama Once Were Warriors, New Zealand director Lee Tamahori was a surprising choice to head up several big budget Hollywood action films including the final Pierce Brosnan Bond film, Die Another Day, and Next. In between, he's also explored 40's-set mysteries (Mulholland Falls), battled the studios with the Baldwin and Hopkins against nature pic, The Edge, and even directed an episode of the Sopranos. This year, he's back to smaller budget filmmaking with the very unlikely and based (loosely) on fact tale of Saddam's son, Uday Hussein's body double, The Devil's Double. In the film, Dominic Cooper (An Education, Captain America: The First Avenger) plays both Uday as well as his double, Latif Yahia, a decent man...
