Drew Carey was able to collect his well-deserved attaboys Sunday at the Writers Guild Awards, where he told the crowd that he covered the bills at Bob’s Big Boy and Swingers for striking scribes last summer because “it’s the right thing to do.”
With a plate full of food in hand, the host of The Price is Right took the stage at the Hollywood Palladium to explain why he insisted on paying for so many meals — though he did acknowledge a brief period of shock and awe when the bills started arriving.
“I didn’t know it was going to cost me so much money,” Carey told the crowd. “The last it was like, I think the total bill was like $67,000. I thought it was going to be about the same thing. But then some of you decided ‘oh yeah I’m going to a get a shake and some dessert....

Road House is currently streaming on Prime Video, but the film’s director, Doug Liman, wishes audiences were watching it in theaters. According to the acclaimed filmmaker, Amazon is “giving audiences the shaft” by not hosting the film on the silver screen, and he feels as if he’s lost a public battle for the project’s worth. In a video posted by Casey Neistat, the notable YouTube sensation gets Liman’s uncensored version of the story and chronicles the director’s trip to the Road House premiere, which, adding insult to injury, takes place in a packed theater.
When Neistat and Liman meet in the room where the sound for Road House was mixed, it becomes apparent that Liman designed the film for theaters. Different studio spaces represent different mixing environments. If a movie will stream in living rooms, sound engineers mix the audio in a smaller space to replicate living room environments.

Billy Magnussen always understands the assignment. Whatever the medium or genre, the actor manages to stand out with an impressive range. He has literally played a Disney prince — twice! — in the film versions of “Into the Woods” and “Aladdin.” He earned a Tony nomination for his role as a dimwitted young lover in “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” and has stood out in ensemble films like “Game Night” and “The Big Short.”
But Magnussen also excels at playing the bad guy, such as the tech billionaire who installs a tracking device in his ex-wife in “Made for Love” to a Nazi officer in “The Survivor.” But never more deliciously than in “Road House,” a reimaging of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic. The new version, hitting Amazon Prime Video this week, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

“Road House” is an infectiously stylish piece of slumming. It’s a remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze cheeseball action cult film, and it’s staged with a verve and wit and dynamic grittiness that make the original film look even more rickety than it once did. Doug Liman, the director of the new “Road House,” has always been a gifted maverick, but I still like his earliest films the best. For years now, he has worked hard to make interesting and responsible dramas, but watching “Road House” you can taste how good it must have felt for him to be irresponsible — to give in to his savage B-movie id.
The action in “Road House” is beyond brutal; at moments, it’s vicious. Yet if the movie is far more violent than your average action film, in its slightly crackpot bare-knuckle way it’s also more humane. Liman stages the pulp...

South by Southwest is a festival like none other. Spread across the bustling streets of Downtown Austin, the convergence event truly has something for everyone.
South by Southwest, better known as SxSw, is a tech conference meets music festival meets film festival. With hundreds of films, bands, startups, and established brands all over the city, the energy is unrivaled.
This year is no different as thousands prepare to arrive at the Texas capitol this week.
I will be lucky enough to attend this year’s festival for a whole week and the film lineup is one of the strongest in years. SxSw is a great combination of established, anticipated films mixed with independent films with massive potential to be the next big thing.
In the past some of the competition films that have premiered at the festival have been Short Term 12, Peanut Butter Falcon, Tiny Furniture. Krisha, and more.

Vince Vaughn has been offered Super Bowl commercials in the past, but he finally said yes when he got the chance to work alongside sports greats Tom Brady and Wayne Gretzky in an ad this year for gambling app BetMGM.
The spot features Vaughn explaining that anyone could use BetMGM except the retired NFL star because he’s already “won enough.” The “Wedding Crashers” star is also shown having dinner with ice hockey legend Gretzky.
Vaughn rarely does commercials. “I’ve been offered Super Bowl ads in the past…but this just really made sense,” Vaughn told me Tuesday at the final season premiere of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “I love Las Vegas, obviously, and MGM. That felt like a good fit. Tom and Wayne are great, so it just felt fun.”
Vaughn continued, “Tom is super easy and he’s funny, same with Wayne. They were easy to be around.

Just consider us Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott) to Doug Liman’s John Dalton (Patrick Swayze). Get your popcorn ready.
All IndieWire needed was a two-minute, 48-second trailer to declare the director 100 percent right about his “Road House” remake being tailor-made for movie theaters. Liman’s larger point, presented in a first-person essay on Deadline touting the importance of theatrical, is also correct — but it seems to be especially accurate for this film, which he’s already touted as possibly his best effort to date.
The trailer, released on Thursday, opens with a many-on-1 (the one is protagonist Jake Gyllenhaal) parking lot brawl. It then takes it to the cage; some of the matches are sanctioned, others are definitely not. Later comes the many bar fights, some gunplay, an alligator attack, a high-speed Ferrari chase, arson, a head-on boat collision, and Conor McGregor going nutso with a golf club.

Jake Gyllenhaal suffers no fools in the first trailer for “Road House.”
The forthcoming remake of the 1989 cult classic finds Gyllenhaal starring as a former Mma fighter whose new life has him defending the honor of a Florida dive bar and its patrons from a wicked real estate baron.
Directed by Doug Liman, “Road House” will have its premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival before hitting Amazon Prime Video on March 21. That the film will bypass movie theaters entirely before debuting on the streaming service has become a source of contention between Amazon and Liman. In a piece published Wednesday by Deadline, Liman wrote that he felt betrayed by Amazon, which acquired the rights to “Road House” after the company bought MGM. Liman wrote that he made “Road House” with an eye toward theatrical release, similar to how MGM films like “Creed III” first went to theaters before a streaming bow.

Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" (both 2008) in many important ways weren't yet part of the then-nascent Marvel Cinematic Universe when they were first made. Favreau put in a post-credits stinger with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury more as a wink to fans than as an announcement that larger film projects were afoot. Additionally, Downey's cameo in "Incredible" was treated equally casually, with the actors reportedly improvising their dialogue. It would only be until after Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009 that plans for an MCU would be put into place in earnest. In many ways, then, it would be Favreau's "Iron Man 2" in 2010 that launched the MCU properly and put plans for an "Avengers" feature film into motion.

The Jake Gyllenhaal/ Doug Liman remake of Road House seems destined for a streaming premiere. The news comes courtesy of Variety and was buried in a piece they wrote about the severing of producer Joel Silver’s relationship with Amazon Studios. According to the report, one of the reasons Silver was fired was due to rather heated discussions with people working for the studios over the films he was involved in, which were apparently bad enough to be considered verbal abuse. One of the things Silver was allegedly most upset over was the fact that Amazon is reportedly planning to release Road House straight-to-streaming through their Amazon MGM banner. This is despite the film being the highest testing film in director Doug Liman’s career, which is saying something as he also directed The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers, Go, and Mr & Mrs Smith.

Rege-Jean Page is to play Simon Templar, as Doug Liman is the latest to get his hands on The Saint. So to speak.
After enjoying significant success on the small screen – hello Roger Moore! – the TV series The Saint made the jump to blockbuster cinema in the back end of the 1990s. That was when Val Kilmer took on the role of Simon Templar, the career choice given at the time for him exiting what became Batman & Robin.
Phillip Noyce directed The Saint, but plans for a big screen franchise were muted by the less than stellar box office receipts, and the lack of a bunch of people at Paramount Pictures clamouring for a sequel.
Still, as properties such as The Equalizer have more elegantly turned into cinema hits, so a fresh take on The Saint has been bubbling along for a while. At one stage, as he told this very outlet,...

It’s been a hot minute since we heard an update about an upcoming remake of The Saint starring Regé-Jean Page. Still, Deadline is here to blow the dust off this project with word that Doug Liman is officially directing The Saint remake. In addition to his starring role, Page will executive produce with Lorenzo Dibonaventura, Brad Krevoy, and the late Robert Evans.
Plot details for The Saint remake remain a mystery. However, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani are working on the script. The Saint is based on the 1920s book series that follows Simon Templar, also known as The Saint. Often described as a Robin Hood-like criminal and thief for hire, Simon can usually be found traveling the globe and looking for adventure. As I said, plot details on the new project are confidential at this time, though sources indicate that the team is working around the clock to reimagine the character.

Based on a novel of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, the film revolves around a Dutch American Football coach Thomas Rongen, who gets a choice to either be fired or convert the American Samoa national team into a great team, which was considered to be one of the weakest team in the world. Next Goal Wins stars Michael Fassbender, Oscar Knightley, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, Rachel House, David Fane, and Kaimana. Love it or hate it, nobody who wants to participate in pop culture can ignore the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the internet and the streaming boom continue to divide the entertainment industry into smaller niche fragments, superhero tentpole movies are the closest thing we still have to a monoculture. That cultural dominance has allowed Marvel Studios to rope an increasingly large percentage of Hollywood’s A-list actors (and quite a few of its best directors) into its ever-expanding universe.
Years of billion dollar box office receipts and endless discourse about its stranglehold on the film industry make it easy to forget what a risky proposition the MCU was when it launched with “Iron Man” in 2008. Superhero movies without Batman, Superman, or Spider-Man were considered box office gambles at the time, and many entertainment industry observers doubted that audiences would continue to show up for so many interlocking films without getting fatigued.

Even "Home Alone" was released in 1990 and that feels downright modern compared to many of these films that have been in rotation for longer than a fair number of you reading this have been alive. The point is, it's tough to gain that coveted holiday classic status. But 20 years ago, Jon Favreau and Will Ferrell teamed up to give us the definitive modern Christmastime classic: "Elf."

If you followed indie film in the 90s, Vince Vaughn was at the center of a legendary tale. As the story goes, in order to get permission to use the theme from Jaws in the film Swingers, Doug Liman screened the film for Steven Spielberg’s approval. Not only did Stevie Boy allow them to use the scary shark tune but the legendary director knew he had to work with whoever was playing Trent Walker. And, he did just that when he cast Vince Vaughn in his Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World. Spielberg instantly knew that Vince Vaughn was superstar material and he was correctomundo. Over the last nearly 30 years, he has given us some of the best comedic performances mixed in with some bone chilling anti-heroes. But it seems in the past few years Vaughn has slowed down his output to focus on smaller roles in more meaningful projects.

Vince Vaughn told us in his 1996 film, Swingers, to always double down on 11 when playing blackjack.
Now he’s advanced to sports betting advice, appearing as the celebrity guest Saturday on ESPN’s College Game Day.

These days, Jon Favreau has largely given up his on-screen appearances — aside from a few scenes as Happy Hogan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (for which he’s been an executive producer and director), his last conventional acting gig came in 2016. Lately, he’s been best known for his work as writer and showrunner for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. But there was, of course, a time in which he was seen often on the screen. And, at the peak of that period came the movie Swingers, in which he starred alongside Vince Vaughn. That was also his first big-screen writing credit, which led some people to believe the story was autobiographical, but Favreau assured us that the Swingers story was almost completely fictional. Exclusive: Vince Vaughn will return to star in (and likely produce) a sequel to his hit 2004 comedy, Dodgeball, scripted by Jordan VanDina (The Binge), which is in early development at 20th Century Studios, Deadline has learned.
While Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed the original film for 20th Century Fox, it’s not yet clear whether he’ll be involved in the sequel, and who, if not Thurber, would direct. Equally uncertain is who will join Vaughn on screen, though there’s certainly a deep bench of talent to pull from in looking back to Dodgeball‘s stacked ensemble, which included Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman and William Shatner, as well as the late Rip Torn.

According to various online biographies, director Jon Favreau graduated high school in 1984 and attended Queens College for only three years before dropping out in 1987. As he recently said on an episode of the "Smartless" podcast, he was immediately offered a high-paying job at the investment firm Bear Stearns, hooked up with the gig by a friend's dad. Given Favreau's age, this would definitely be considered "selling out" at the time. The easily earned, large-salary job was once something young aspiring artists eschewed, preferring a hard-earned, low-money career in the arts. Favreau was bitten by the acting bug at a young age and always had his sights turned on performance.
After about a year at Bear Stearns, Favreau quit. It seems he just barely missed Black Monday. It also seemed that he hated it. After another brief try at college, Favreau dropped out again, this time for good, and drove out...

They say L.A. has no history, and yet, thankfully there are still enough vestiges of the Laurel Canyon folk-rock scene of the 1970s to fully stock a throwback series like “Daisy Jones & the Six.” Set among the flowy dresses and shaggy mustaches of the city’s rock ‘n’ roll heyday, the series gives aspiring rockers Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin, plenty of classic places to hang out, giving the gauzy musical series a grounding in a specific time and place.
The show’s production designer, Jessica Kender, explains that in some cases, it was more important to capture the feeling of the era than to use the exact location. A perfect example is the front of the Six’s house in Laurel Canyon, which was designed to evoke the iconic cover of “Crosby, Stills & Nash” with the band sitting on a...

Origins is a recurring series giving artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Sego’s Spencer Petersen digs into “Tandang,” the first preview of the band’s upcoming album.
Los Angeles-based art-punk band Sego have unveiled their new single “Tandang” in anticipation of their upcoming third studio album. It marks the group’s first new release since their 2020 EP Life of Pam.
Self-described as “art-punk by non-punk non-artists,” Sego toy with the fine balance of genres while embodying the avant-garde. First making a name for themselves in the LA music scene by hosting experimental DIY shows at their warehouse in Echo Park known as The Cube, their signature sound incorporates danceable punk injected with hints of funk, dance music, and indie pop.
The new single “Tandang” roots itself in electro-funk grooves shifting in and out of a throbbing, percussive instrumental and sparse bassline.

"True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto will make his feature film directorial debut with the drama "Easy's Waltz." Deadline confirmed the news, revealing the project will star Vince Vaughn alongside Michelle Monaghan, Simon Rex, and Al Pacino. Unsurprisingly, given his history of penning entire seasons of his crime drama anthology solo, Pizzolatto will also be on screenwriting duty for the film, which is described as a mix of "Swingers" and "A Star Is Born."
"Easy's Waltz" will reportedly focus on a "down-on-his-luck comedian-crooner" in modern-day Las Vegas, who navigates the city alongside "old-school Vegas personalities." Not much else is known about the project, which is being produced by Margot Hand, who also lent her producing talents to 2021's "Passing."
No release has been announced, and further details are yet to be revealed, but this will be the second time Pizzolatto and Vaughn have teamed up, following the latter's starring role in season 2 of "True Detective.

The Man Behind ‘Mandalorian’: Jon Favreau Talks Season 3, ‘Skeleton Crew’ and His Walk of Fame Honor
At the center of the two biggest pop culture empires of this generation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the “Star Wars” franchise, lies one architect who helped launch them into modern greatness: Jon Favreau.
Fifteen years ago, the actor-turned-filmmaker directed a film about a B-list superhero with a not-yet-bankable movie star when comic-book films were more flukes than surefire hits. That movie turned out to be “Iron Man,” starring Robert Downey Jr. (with Favreau also playing his right-hand man Happy Hogan) and, after dozens of spinoffs, theme-park rides and box office records, the rest is comic-book history.
Recently, Favreau has traded his Repulsor gloves for lightsabers. He’s charting the future of “Star Wars” across several TV series, beginning with “The Mandalorian,” the flagship Disney+ show that debuted on Day 1 of the streamer. The Western-themed “Star Wars” series premieres its third season on March 1, and it’s already spawned several...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
To help button up "Titanic" week here at /Film, welcome to part two of the special two-part edition of this column. Earlier this week, we looked back at how "Tomorrow Never Dies," the second Pierce Brosnan "James Bond" effort, drew the short straw and had to go up against James Cameron's massive blockbuster in its opening weekend — and yes, 007 lost that fight. But what about the movie that finally dethroned "Titanic" at the box office? That honor, strangely enough, goes to 1998's "Lost in Space" which was, itself, a pretty sizable flop. Yet, it does have the honor of being the film that ended the longest winning streak in box office history.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles, the American soul food restaurant chain with seven Los Angeles locations spanning from Pasadena to Hollywood, Long Beach and beyond, has officially closed its Mid-City location on Pico Boulevard after a 32-year run.

A collective eyebrow was raised when the 2023 Sundance Film Festival announced a last-minute addition to the lineup: Justice, a documentary probing the allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. That the film marked the first documentary directed by Doug Liman, the man behind Swingers and The Bourne Identity, and was produced by Amy Herdy, an ex-journalist and key researcher for the documentaries Allen v. Farrow and On the Record, only piqued curiosity further. Would the film contain new claims against Kavanaugh beyond what emerged during and around...

Director Doug Liman brings to mind his 1996 breakout “Swingers,” or his 2010s Tom Cruise vehicles like 2014 “The Edge Of Tomorrow.” Or maybe his upcoming “Road House” remake with Jake Gyllenhaal for Prime Video. So, consider this news from the Sundance Film Festival a serious curveball. The Hollywood Reporter says Liman has a new film set to debut at the festival, and it’s his documentary debut.

Doug Liman — the sought-after features director behind titles like Swingers, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity — spent all of 2022 making his documentary debut about the government investigation into now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Non-fiction stalwarts Dan Cogan and Liz Garbus backed the doc, which will now debut at the Sundance Film Festival after being successfully kept a secret for over a year.
This may all sound like a project produced via a particularly unbelievable game of Mad Libs but allow Liman to explain.
“The Supreme Court, which is sacred for all of us, holds special meaning for me,” says Liman, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the festival. His father Arthur L. Liman was a revered lawyer and activist who helped lead investigations into the Iran-contra affair and the Attica prison uprising, among other notable cases. A new documentary about the explosive sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh will debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Veteran feature director Doug Liman is directing, marking his documentary debut.
“It’s a film that focuses on the allegations against Brett Kavanaugh and the investigation that ensued,” said Sundance director of programing Kim Yutani.
Amy Herdy is producing the project, with Story Syndicate’s Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan as executive producers. A cut was prepared exclusively for Sundance and the project is still seeking distribution. CAA is handling the sale.
Justice Kavanaugh was nominated to the Supreme Court by former President Donald Trump in 2018. In the subsequent months of his vetting process, multiple women came forward and accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault, including Christine Blasey Ford.

The film “Justice” is intended to screen on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Mt as a special premiere at Park Avenue Theater followed by a Press & Industry screening at 10 p.m. Mt, and IndieWire has learned the film is also available for acquisition.
Liman, who is known for films like “Swingers,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “The Bourne Identity,” and more, self-financed the project and is making his documentary feature debut with “Justice.”
Kavanaugh, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2018 by President Donald Trump, was the subject of a contentious series of confirmation hearings when he was accused of sexually assaulting professor Christine Blasey Ford. Joseph Gordon-Levitt first learned about Sundance Film Festival while he was making his big screen debut in 1992’s “A River Runs Through It.” That’s where the film’s director (and Sundance’s founder) Robert Redford gave him a T-shirt emblazoned with the festival’s moniker. But it wasn’t until he was a bit older that he fully understood the rebel spirit that has made Sundance a destination for indie auteurs and artists for decades.
“As a 14-year old, I started watching ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ ‘Sex Lies and Video Tape,’ ‘Swingers,’ ‘Sling Blade,’ ‘Big Night’ and all these movies that were coming through Sundance,” Gordon-Levitt remembers. “That was my thing in my adolescence. That was what I dreamed of doing.”
But getting up the mountain proved difficult. At that time, Gordon-Levitt was best known for his work in “3rd Rock From the Sun,” a broad comedy about a group of alien explorers.

But it’s this shot that arguably defines the movie, both in tone and premise. Ferrell — then still Saturday Night Live’s golden boy, tentatively making the breakthrough to the big screen — as Buddy the human elf, squeezes himself into a tiny desk next to Santa’s actual elves (played by children). It’s a study in comedic contrasts and, aptly for the star of Old School, all achieved using the oldest of old-school techniques: forced-perspective. In other words, Ferrell may look like he’s sitting next to those kids, but he’s actually several metres in front of them, with cleverly chosen camera angles doing the rest. “All the techniques I learned about from reading Starlog magazine or Cinefex, I wanted to try them,” Favreau tells Empire. “As for the forced-perspective, we were doing our homework.

There are few tasks in Hollywood harder than making a sequel which improves on the original. Writing a follow-up to a bonafide modern Christmas classic, however, might be one of them!
When Elf first arrived in theaters back in November 2003, few could have predicted it would go on to become one of the most beloved Christmas movies of the 21st century. Yet Elf was that rare example of cinematic lighting in a bottle; the coming together of actors and filmmakers destined for big things.
Will Ferrell was a fast-rising comedic star fresh from Saturday Night Live and having only recently stolen the show in Todd Phillips’ frat house comedy Old School. Zooey Deschanel had a string of credits to her name, but it was Elf that helped establish the “manic pixie dream girl” persona that would bring her repeated success in the decade that followed. Even director Jon Favreau was...

Los Feliz gastropub Messhall Kitchen has a new (and Hollywood-approved) item on its menu this November: a film festival.
It’s one that couldn’t happen anywhere else. The fest features eight short films, all of which were produced and filmed entirely at Messhall over an eight week period, accomplished by talent that is either on staff or frequently seated at restaurant tables.
Messhall server Jon Bangle and bartender Andrew Pack, both creative multi-hyphenates in their own right, conceived of the fest after surveying the scene and noting the potential of its talent pool. Their plan was met with overwhelming interest and they were able to produce the shorts (seven comedies and one drama) over an eight-week period by leaning into overnight shoots when Messhall was closed. Add to that small crews and no budgets, which seems like an insurmountable task but impossible...

First-time directors have to start somewhere when making their first project and have to cut their teeth in film on a no-budget or micro-budget production. They take on multiple roles of producer, writer, costume designer, production and craft services to save money as there is no budget to hire professionals.
This can spark creative outcomes as the crew and their director have to focus on how to spend the budget, creating a standout indie film that can go on to rake it in at the box office and become a cult classic.
Director Robert Rodriguez’s breakthrough 1993 feature film, El Mariachi, was created on a shoestring budget of only $7,000, launching his career. It still holds the Guinness World Record for the lowest-budget film to gross $1 million at the box office.
Other first-time directors include Kevin Smith, who made Clerks on a $27,000 budget in 1994; David Lynch who created the cult classic...

Blackjack is a game of chance. The most popular casino banking game in the world, it is derived from a global family of financial games known as Twenty-One and is played with 52 decks of cards. Pontoon and Vingt-et-Un are also part of the Pontoon family of card games. Players of blackjack do not face off against one another. Each player plays against the dealer in a card game in which they compare their cards.

At the risk of damning an impressively strong debut with faint praise, B.J. Novak’s “Vengeance” is perhaps the best possible movie someone could make out of a murder-mystery that starts with John Mayer standing on the rooftop bar of a Soho House, but doesn’t end with the musician dead in a ditch somewhere.
In fact, Mayer never shows up again. He sticks around just long enough for you to assume the worst about what’s to come — oh yay, the other, other guy from “The Office” remade “Swingers” for the Tinder set, and cast someone who once referred to his dick as a white supremacist in the Vince Vaughn role — and then recedes into the background of a wickedly sharp film that satirizes our rush to judgment in a society where unprecedented chaos has forced people to rely on the stabilizing confidence of their own convictions.
