Earlier this year, James Gunn and Peter Safran officially confirmed the entire phase one slate of the revamped Dcu. That includes a new Batman, The Brave and the Bold, which will also feature the live-action return of Robin. This is bold, considering Matt Reeves‘s version of Batman has been praised by fans and critics alike. However, that doesn’t mean that Batman in Gunn’s universe is doomed to fail. With the right storytelling, Dcu’s Batman can be just as (or more) compelling than Matt Reeves’s version. In total, there have been eight live-action Batman films, and each one of them has...

Johnny Depp’s once white-hot career has flamed out in the wake of his many scandals, but the controversial actor has every reason to expect a movie star welcome when he hits Cannes on Tuesday for the premiere of “Jeanne du Barry.” The costume drama is Depp’s first leading role in three years, a period of time in which the star has mostly made headlines for his ongoing legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard.
But through that tempestuous period, one that saw Depp fired from high-profile projects like the “Harry Potter” spinoff franchise “Fantastic Beasts,” Europe has remained a port in the storm. He has continued to be celebrated at film festivals throughout the continent with audiences loyally showing up to see the movies he has managed to make in between tabloid appearances. For its part, Cannes has pushed back at suggestions that it shouldn’t be offering Depp...

No risk, no reward and all that. Actors making the transition from their day job to directing don’t always succeed—see Johnny Depp’s “The Brave” for an old example and Ryan Gosling’s recently critically-roasted “Lost River” for a more recent one. But everyone’s got to start somewhere, even an established celeb or actor. And yes, it can be a risky road to take, but nothing ventured, nothing gained of course. Plus most actors quickly learn that film is a director’s medium—an actor’s favorite takes, even their favorite scenes, can be left on the cutting room floor if the filmmaker wishes it—so wanting that control, plus trying to discover how the other half lives is understandably appealing. A good, sometimes safe place to start for fledgling filmmakers is in the music video field. Shia Labeouf has used the medium often to dip his filmmaking toe in the water,...

It’s probably safe to say that Johnny Depp does not enjoy the same levels of popularity that he did around a decade ago. Granted, the actor hit the height of his popularity after he was launched to worldwide fame in the first movie in Disney’s ever expanding Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, playing Captain Jack Sparrow, a rum-obsessed pirate with morality issues who seems to be channelling Keith Richards. In recent years, though, Depp seems unable to find himself in a genuinely good film – flop after flop, bad review after bad review. So what’s going on?
With the recent release of sci-fi thriller Transcendence, which has been panned across the board, it’s just another misfire to add to Depp’s increasingly muddled filmography. His performance as Dr. Will Caster has been branded “catatonic” and “sleepy” (which at least makes a change, given the intensity...

Few actors have been as adventurous or as weird, and few have risen to stardom so fast. Johnny Depp's filmography is as strange and varied as anyone's. With Transcendence hitting theaters this week, it's time to look back over the career of Johnny Depp and craft the definitive ranking of his performances. Here are our rules: only major roles are eligible (so no A Nightmare on Elm Street or The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and voice work in animated movies won't be ranked (so no Corpse Bride or Rango). The Brave is not ranked because it's still unavailable and unseen in North America. From worst to best, here are the 29 major Johnny Depp performances, ranked in quality. 29. Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland) This is it -- the nadir of Johnny Depp. No...

As problems go, it’s a pretty First World one to be saddled with. You’re a movie star pocketing obscene paychecks to appear in Hollywood blockbusters. But something is missing. Fame and box office success alone aren’t why you started making movies. You are an actor If only your fans could see just how cool and fearless and devoted to the craft you really are. What to do? Worry not. There’s a well-trod path laid out that will put this plight behind you once and for all: You will make a boldly uncommercial art film. The weirder,...

Happy 50th birthday, Johnny Depp! It feels like only yesterday we were crushing on you as a kid cop in 21 Jump Street and sobbing after Freddy turned you into a bloody mess in A Nightmare on Elm Street. In celebration of this momentous occasion (that makes Depp fans feel ancient), The Playlist dug up some info on the actor's first and only directorial project, cowritten with his brother, D.P. Depp (worst name ever?). Website IMDb offers this synopsis for The Brave, which makes us wonder why we waited so long to find out that Johnny Depp made a movie, and it involves snuff: "A down-on-his-luck American Indian recently released from jail is offered the chance to 'star' as the victim of a snuff film, the resulting pay of which could greatly help his...

Will all of Robert De Niro's great "Silver Linings Playbook" work be undone in a blink of an eye? The actor has a solid shot at winning Best Supporting Actor tonight despite the fact that Tommy Lee Jones won the SAG award for "Lincoln" earlier this year (the best Oscar augur there is). But his work in David O. Russell's film will go down as one of his finest whether or not he wins. It was an incredibly authentic and charged performance imbued with the anger, frustration and heartache of being a parent struggling with a problem child, on top of the the realization he may have failed said offspring. De Niro's career in the aughts has gone dangerously close to Marlon Brando's late-career arc, which was hard to watch ("The Island of Dr. Moreau," "Don Juan DeMarco," "The Brave" which never even came out). There have...

As much as people have quibbles with (much more democratically voted-on) awards like the Oscars, the decisions by juries at film festivals tend to be even more contentious. Usually drawn from practitioners and actors, with a few other curious participants in there as well, jurors often come in with their own likes, dislikes and agendas, and in the absence of a unanimous choice, often end up settling for compromises.
Indeed, this year's Cannes Film Festival jury president Nanni Moretti said, after the awards were unveiled this past weekend, that none of the them were unanimously voted for (word is Andrea Arnold in particular was a fervent opponent of Leos Carax's "Holy Motors"). That being said, their Palme D'Or winner was a popular one: while a few critics were rooting for "Holy Motors," almost everyone was delighted that Michael Haneke's "Amour" picked up the prize (his second in four years,...

Depp claims Native American heritage, but I don't care whether he can prove it or not. His cred is his talent as an actor
When I first saw the picture of Depp playing Tonto which producer Jerry Bruckheimer sneak-tweeted last week, I was, of course, giddy as always to see Depp, because I have been a fan for most of my life. I am one of those women who feels like they "discovered" him because they have been following his career since the original 21 Jump Street. And now, as Tonto: the make-up was fierce and the head-dress a bit odd – I mean, it is a bird – but it was still "my" Johnny Depp.
I knew when that picture, with a head-dress by a costume designer and face-paint by a make-up artist, surfaced, that there was going to be a stir – an uprising, perhaps – among the American Indian community's social networks.

At the best of times, particularly in the latter stages of his career, Marlon Brando was pretty unpredictable; you never knew what you might get from the mercurial actor once he was on set. But in the case of the never-made "Divine Rapture," the filmmakers never got a chance to see what might happen out of their starry production. Set to star Brando, his friend Johnny Depp (they worked together on "The Brave" and "Don Juan DeMarco") and Debra Winger, the film was all set to shoot in Ballycotton, Ireland (indeed, you can see the cast in costume above) when producers CineFin failed to secure the $4 million they needed to make the movie, leaving the movie and many villagers in the lurch. This was back in 1995, however producer Barry Navidi (Al Pacino pics "The Merchant Of Venice," "Wilde Salome" and the upcoming "King Lear") has stuck with it and it...

Johnny Depp's new project seems a far cry from Jack Sparrow, but John Patterson finds a case of yo-ho-hum with this new bottle of rum
• Johnny Depp interview: 'I'm not ready to give up my American citizenship'
When Johnny Depp was shooting Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas in the late-90s, he got a call from Bill Murray, who nearly two decades earlier had also played Gonzo kingpin Hunter S Thompson in the largely forgettable Where The Buffalo Roam. Make your next role drastically different from Thompson, Murray advised Depp, "Otherwise you'll find yourself 10 years from now still doing him."
Here we are, not just 10 but nearly 15 years later, facing The Rum Diary, which, precisely in line with the prognostications of the Nostradamus-like Murray (who knew?), stars Johnny Depp as a very lightly fictionalised version of the young Hunter S Thompson – although it's a very different, more realistic performance.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is one of the most inconsequential movies ever made. It is also very, very close to making a billion dollars at the global box office. It has already moved onto the list of the top ten highest-grossing movies ever, according to Box Office Mojo, thus joining the other two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. Add in Alice in Wonderland — the swamp-candy mediocrity which grossed a billion dollars thanks to 3-D price-gouging and the misplaced interest of an audience desperate for another Avatar — and you notice something remarkable: Johnny Depp — a performer who seemed practically unmarketable ten years ago,...

If you haven't ever read Ambrose Bierce's short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," you've surely been exposed to it in one way or another. Maybe you saw a copy of it on Lost or experienced its influence on films like Donnie Darko and Jacob's Ladder. Perhaps you saw Robert Enrico's 1962 short film adaptation, which won an Oscar and a prize at Cannes before being aired on TV as an episode of The Twilight Zone (watch it free here). Other versions include a silent film by King Vidor, an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and now a music video directed by Johnny Depp for the band Babybird, which is basically a short film adaptation of the story if you remove the shots of singer Stephen Jones.
I'm not too keen on the song, but it's great to see more behind-the-camera work from the Pirates of the Caribbean star.

In September 2008, we reported that plans were underway for a new Lone Ranger movie. While that news usually might not get much attention from the regular press, curiosities were peaked when it was learned that Johnny Depp would be playing one of the lead roles.
Interestingly, Depp won't be playing the man behind the mask though, he'll be playing Tonto, the Lone Ranger's faithful companion. Depp’s grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee and he embraced his heritage in his self-directed 1997 movie The Brave.
While there's been no further casting news, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced project is still alive. In fact novelist and screenwriter Justin Haythe has just been picked to write the feature. Haythe has previously written the screenplays for The Clearing and Revolutionary Road.

The man who can do everything will return to directing! Johnny Depp will indeed develop an upcoming documentary on Rolling Stones musician Keith Richards, and work on the project will begin next week.
Variety confirmed a story that recently popped up in a Serbian magazine. Depp and Richards have been buddies for a while, and Richards was also an inspiration for Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean."
Richards also appeared in 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." As for Depp, he also directed 1997's "The Brave" (based on the novel by Gregory McDonald), which starred Depp and Marlon Brando.
Depp will next be seen in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland." He starred in "Public Enemies" last year, and his future projects also include "The Rum Diary," "Rango" and "The Lone Ranger." He's a busy guy, for sure.

Johnny Depp will return to directing with a documentary about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
“Now that I’m wiser, and that enough time has passed, I can experience directing again,” Depp told Politika (via The Playlist), a Serbian magazine. “Already next week I’ll start working on a Keith Richards documentary. I couldn’t think of anyone better to do the first “official” documentary on the life of Keith Richards than Johnny Depp. As a lifelong ‘Stones fan, much like Depp, Richard’s life is so intriguing to me. Johnny Depp tried his hand at directing once. In 1997, he wrote, starred in and helmed a movie called "The Brave," which also turned out to be one of the final screen performances for the legendary actor, Marlon Brando. It wasn't very good by most accounts and it never saw any kind of theatrical release in the United States.
Depp shifted back to acting again, and proceeded to star in a string of features that propelled him to superstardom, starting with the deft adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" in 1997 and culminating, of course, with "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" in 2003. He's been flying high ever since, but he's not stepped back behind the camera since "The Brave." Until now.

For his first directorial foray in more than a decade, the world's most famous Pirate of the Caribbean is to make a film about the Rolling Stone
Johnny Depp is making a film about Keith Richards, and he's calling it Happy. The guitarist, who is known more for his benders than for his grin, will be the focus of Depp's first directorial foray in more than a decade.
"Now that I'm wiser, and that enough time has passed, I can experience directing again," Depp told the Serbian magazine Politika, according to a translation by the Playlist. "Next week I'll start working on a Keith Richards documentary."
Depp's last directorial outing was 1997's The Brave, which received mixed reviews. But this isn't the first time he has taken inspiration from Keith Richards: the Rolling Stone was reportedly one of the inspirations for Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean character, Jack Sparrow.

You may not already know this, but Johnny Depp directed a film called The Brave wayyy back in 1997 (aka Bfb, aka Before Facebook). Not only did he direct it, but he wrote it and starred in the film too, about an American Indian who is released from jail and given the opportunity to star in a snuff film. Not exactly the sort of popcorn, blockbuster entertainment we're used to seeing him in now, but it was a legitimate film and it even co-starred Marlon Brando. Now, 13 years later, it would appear Depp is diving back into the director's chair. Don't worry, he's not leaving behind those tasty starring roles anytime soon – but he is going to be helming a documentary about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. If you remember, Richards played Depp's father in the last Pirates of the...

The Rolling Stones have collectively been the focus of some great music documentaries (Gimme Shelter; Shine a Light; Sympathy for the Devil). Now it's time for the band's guitarist, Keith Richards, to go solo with his own doc. And none other than Johnny Depp will direct it, according to The Playlist. They got the info from a Serbian website featuring an interview with the actor, who was apparently in Drvengrad last month for the unveiling of a statue in his image, the ceremony for which opened this year's Kustendorf Film Festival.
It's been 13 years since Depp last went behind the camera for the Native American drama The Brave, but in a translated statement Depp said that he's wiser now and ready to direct again. He noted that while he was in Serbia, his editor was going through "kilometers" of footage of Richards. That was a few weeks ago, so the...

Depp is a famous chameleon, able to slip in and out of distinct roles so well that I sometimes have difficulty realizing it’s him (call it a lack of Depp perception - ha!), but does he have it in him to play another nationality in another language? Especially a character as iconic as Villa? I have faith in the actor,...
