Before Ryan Reynolds sliced his way into box office lore with Deadpool’s razor-sharp wit, another beloved actor was only a claw’s length away from making R-rated comic book history. Yes, Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold intended to immortalize The Wolverine as the first mature audience-oriented spectacle in the X-Men universe.
Consider this: it is 2013, and the cinematic world is enthralled by PG-13, effects-laden marvels like The Avengers, whose paint is still drying on its vibrant canvas.
Even though Fox steered the ship towards safer waters, could anyone have predicted how Mangold’s unrealized vision would paradoxically give The Wolverine a cutting edge that allowed it to cut through the din of its competitors?

If you’re like me and so many other nineties kids, you may remember Eye See You (watch it Here) as that Sylvester Stallone film you saw late in his career sitting on the shelves at your local Blockbuster or Hollywood Video featuring Sly pointing a gun in a snowy landscape looking just as surprised as you to be there with such little fanfare. Stallone belongs on the “Guaranteed to have in-stock or you get a free rental” Holy shit package wall of the video store or at the very least in an interesting role among an all-star cast like he’d been in with Cop Land a few years previous.

One of the things that defined Sylvester Stallone’s career is his determination to realize his vision. He convinced the producers of Rocky that the only way they could make the movie was with him in the starring role. While he was not the director of the first film, he would pull dual duties for Rocky II, then would go on to helm much of his own projects and even the Saturday Night Fever sequel, Staying Alive. The new Netflix documentary, Sly, is an intimate introspective on the action star’s prolific career and how his life evolved with it. And as much control as Stallone would prefer to have over his most personal films, he would allow the director, Thom Zimny, full control.

Sly is documentary directed by Thom Zimny about Sylvester Stallone.
If you want to get to know the man behind Rocky and Rambo, you can find it in “Sly”, a documentary where Stallone talks about the creation of these 80s icons, and of course, his life too.

With 13 schools in 12 years and a military school experience, Stallone was a man who didn’t fit into any movie and decided to write and invent his own characters. At thirty years old, he was nobody until circumstances led him to Rocky, a character that, as he tells us, he personally crafted and wrote.
The movie was a huge success, with all its sequels. Then came Rambo and more.

1996 was a dark year for The Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone had two pricey flops in 1995, with Judge Dredd and Assassins. His Christmas of 1996 disaster movie release, Daylight, was another box office bomb. Just a few years before, Stallone had made a significant comeback with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but now the whole industry was changing. Carolco, the company that financed some of the era’s biggest hits, had gone bankrupt, and action movies were getting smaller and smaller. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on the decline, with Eraser a smaller hit than usual. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were only a few years away from making direct-to-video movies. What was Sly to do? The result is one of his very best movies –Cop Land – as we explore in the episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited.

Actor Sylvester Stallone, during the screening of his classic 1976 film ‘Rocky’ at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), said that while writing and making the film, he just wrote what he knew and acted it out. The actor, who was a very small actor back then, had written the script himself which he maintains, is his best till date.
Stallone, was an usher during his early days, and recounting the incident said: “My gig as an usher, you could say, was my film class 101 in screenwriting.”

Sylvester Stallone says screening the 1958 Hollywood adventure fantasy flick Hercules, starring Steve Reeves, changed his life when he was 12 years of age.
“I was very lucky, in the golden age of films, when dialogue was important. But the dialogue didn’t move me as much as the actual physical embodiment of overcoming odds,” Stallone said of movies that tap into ancient mythology during an in-conversation appearance at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday afternoon.
He was also influenced by comic books when conjuring up action hero fantasies in his head. “Coming to the rescue, not so much as a superhero, just as a guy who was forced to,” Stallone said of early artistic inspirations.
He also talked about getting a job as an usher in a cinema house after college to do more than take tickets at the turnstile. He got an education in movie-making. “Watching those films over and over and over,...

Artist-turned-actor Sylvester Stallone will have a retrospective of his original paintings and art pieces at the Toronto Film Festival, starting today.
The exhibit with mixed-media art, writings and memorabilia by the Rocky and Expendables star will run throughout TIFF, leading up to the world premiere of Netflix’s Stallone documentary Sly that is set to close the Toronto festival on Sept. 16 with a gala screening.
The Bell Lightbox exhibit features 12 original paintings and art pieces created by Stallone from 1975 to 2020. Most are abstract, with vivid paintbrush swirls enveloping images of boxers and commentary on Hollywood fame and royalty. One work, Family Ties, depicts a pregnant mother and a distant father and illustrates the artist’s use of a limited color palette of black, white and red.

Before becoming a superstar in Hollywood, Stallone as a young man started out as a painter, before choosing script writing and then acting as a career.

Sylvester Stallone established himself as a dramatic talent in 1976 when he wrote and starred in the boxing classic, Rocky. After seemingly coming out of nowhere, Stallone found himself receiving heaps of critical praise. In 1977, he was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role opposite the likes of Robert De Niro, and Peter Finch. Furthermore, he was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay. After the glaring success of Rocky, Sylvester Stallone transitioned into more of an action star. However, in 1997 he decided to showcase his dramatic ability in the crime drama, Cop Land. Stallone famously took a...

When we last talked, Ray Liotta was thinking a lot about mortality. “I’m at the age now there are some things you just forget,” he mused. “60 was a motherf*cker for me.” He was 64 at the time, soon to turn 65, but somehow his face, which once seemed older and wiser than its time, now seemed timeless. “Some people age better, and with some it’s like, ‘Whoa, what happened there!?’” he laughed.
“You’re like me,” he told me. “We look younger. You’ve got a babyface and you’re not lined. I have really oily skin. In high school it sucked because I had zits, so I have a whole complex about that to this day.”
He laughed with that twinkle in his eye that propelled his iconic turns in Something Wild, Goodfellas, Field of Dreams, not to mention Cop Land, Narc, Smokin’ Aces and Hannibal. He did plenty of forgettable films too,...

Sly, Sylvester Stallone’s career-spanning documentary for Netflix, recalling the action icon’s famous performances in Rocky to Rambo to The Expendables, is set to close the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 16 with a world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall.

In the early 2000s, Bob Dylan teamed up with writer Larry Charles to work on the screenplay for the film Masked and Anonymous. This was not the musician’s first movie. Still, this was the first time he worked on a screenplay in this way. Charles said he worked well with Dylan and that the script was the product of their equal collaboration. Charles noted that Dylan had been researching the Civil War at the time, so the historical era influenced the screenplay.
Bob Dylan took inspiration from the Civil War when he wrote a screenplay
When Charles and Dylan began working on Masked and Anonymous, Dylan pulled out a box of possible character names. He’d written them on scraps of paper with assorted words and phrases. In a similar manner to which Dylan writes songs, they began putting the scraps together to write a screenplay.

Updated with Karsen Liotta statement: In one of his final roles before he passed away last year at age 67, Ray Liotta’s turn in the Dennis Lehane-created Apple TV+ limited Black Bird has gotten the venerable Goodfellas star an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a limited or anthology series.
Liotta played Big Jim Keene, the former police officer who is devastated when his football hero son Jimmy (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to a decade in prison for drug dealing. Big Jim encourages his son to accept an FBI offer to go from a minimum security to maximum security prison so that he can bond with Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), who is suspected to be a serial killer who may have murdered 18 girls. Hall leads investigators just short of an acknowledgment of the crime and whereabout of the bodies, and young Keene is tasked with discovering the whereabouts of those bodies,...

Director James Mangold is set to direct his upcoming feature film ‘A Complete Unknown’ based on the legendary singer Bob Dylan.
According to the ‘Logan’ director, Bob Dylan was incredibly supportive of the movie to the point that he personally went on to offer notes.
Speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Mangold said, “I’ve spent several, wonderfully charming, days in his company, just one-on-one, talking to him. I have a script that’s personally annotated by him and treasured by me. He loves movies. The first time I sat down with Bob, one of the first things he said to me was, ‘I love ‘Cop Land’.”
‘Cop Land’ was Mangold’s second film. According to ‘Variety’, Mangold said that one of the reasons the folk singer was supportive of the film was “The reason Bob has been so supportive of us making it, is it’s about, as...

It’s always hard to trust that a biopic will do its subject justice, but in the case of James Mangold’s upcoming film about Bob Dylan, it looks like we’re in good hands. Mangold told IndieWire that the iconic singer-songwriter gave the director notes for his script for A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as Dylan.
“I’ve spent several, wonderfully charming, days in his company, just one-on-one, talking to him,” Mangold said of Dylan. “I have a script that’s personally annotated by him and treasured by me. Timothée Chalamet’s Bob Dylan movie, “A Complete Unknown,” is supposed to kick off filming in August, but don’t call it a Bob Dylan biopic. During a recent appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (via IndieWire), the film’s director, James Mangold, said “A Complete Unknown” is “not really a Bob Dylan biopic” but a movie about “a very specific moment” in the 1960s folk scene of New York City. The film’s specificity is one reason the real Bob Dylan “has been so supportive of us making it,” the filmmaker reasoned.
“The best true-life movies are never cradle to grave but they’re about a very specific moment,” Mangold said. “In this case, it might be presumptuous to call it Altman-esque, but it’s a kind of ensemble piece about this moment in time, the early ’60s in New York, and this 17-year-old kid with $16 in his...

Bob Dylan made his comments known for upcoming film “A Complete Unknown.”
The highly-anticipated feature, helmed by James Mangold, stars Timothée Chalamet as the “Tangled Up in Blue” folk icon. However, Mangold noted during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that the film is not a traditional biopic, but rather an ensemble period piece reminiscent of Robert Altman’s work.

[This story contains spoilers for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.]
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is glad he not only met his heroes but collaborated with them, too.
Dial of Destiny is Mangold’s twelfth feature film, but it was his second film, Cop Land (1997), that prepared him most for the job nearly three decades later. Cop Land boasted a cast of Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta among others, and this experience conditioned the New York filmmaker for his current working relationships alongside industry titans such as Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, George Lucas, John Williams, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy. Mangold certainly anticipated moments where one of these heavy hitters would pull rank, but he was pleasantly surprised when just the opposite happened.

The walls of James Mangold’s spacious office on the Fox lot are covered with posters, many of which are for his own films: “Ford v. Ferrari,” “3:10 to Yuma,” “Walk the Line,” “Cop Land,” and “Logan.” It’s a reminder that this week’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is not the first time he’s steered a vintage franchise into port.
“Logan” tracked a similar arc, as an aging Wolverine makes peace with his daughter while facing his own mortality. It gave Mangold confidence that dealing with Indiana Jones’ seniority was not a problem. “In both cases,” he said, slouching on a sofa in his office, “you’re faced with a hero in a twilight of their life having a reckoning with who and what they are.”
There are reasons, many of which are good, why an established filmmaker should avoid a high-profile sequel. Sky-high expectations...

Sylvester Stallone breathed new life into the Rocky franchise when he returned to the character after a long hiatus. But the one person who tried to discourage Stallone from lacing up his gloves again was his own partner.

It wasn’t easy for Stallone to reprise his role as Rocky in the series’ sixth film Rocky Balboa. The actor wasn’t satisfied with where he’d left the franchise off with the divisive Rocky V. A couple of years later, Stallone sought to redeem the franchise with another sequel. But many weren’t sold on the idea.
A series of circumstances, however, would help get Rocky Balboa off the ground.

Nearly one year after Ray Liotta’s unexpected death in the Dominican Republic, his cause of death has been released.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the 67-year-old actor died from heart and respiratory issues. Specific causes of death list pulmonary edema — fluid in the lungs, respiratory insufficiency and acute heart failure. The report also noted atherosclerosis, a buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls, as an underlying issue.
Liotta, best known for “Goodfellas,” “Cop Land” and “Narc,” died in his sleep last May in the Dominican Republic while shooting “Dangerous Waters”. The actor had recently starred as twin brothers in the “Sopranos” prequel “The Many Saints of Newark” while appearing in Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.” He had recently appeared in Elizabeth Banks’ “Cocaine Bear,” which debuted this past February and earned decent reviews and $89.2 million worldwide.

For most of his existence as a cinematic icon, Steven Spielberg was the only one who ever directed an "Indiana Jones" movie, dating back to the all-time blockbuster classic "Raiders of the Lost Ark." And, as far as the movies go, it's mostly only been Harrison Ford who has played him. But the first part of that equation is set to change with this summer's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," as James Mangold is directing this time around. Luckily, he's received Spielberg's seal of approval.
Speaking as part of the Time100 Summit recently, the master filmmaker addressed the upcoming fifth entry in the long-running franchise. Spielberg was asked about watching an "Indiana Jones" film that he didn't direct, and he offered some kind words for Mangold's film, saying the following:

Sylvester Stallone sure has had one hell of a run with his most famous onscreen creation, Rocky Balboa. He's had a long career full of ups and downs ("Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot"), but when people look back at Stallone's contribution to cinema in 50 or 100 years' time, it will be the big-hearted slugger from Philadelphia who Sly is best remembered for.
Perhaps because of his association with the action genre and easily-spoofed screen persona, people don't always give Stallone the credit as an artist he deserves. After all, you can say what you want about the overall quality of the "Rocky" franchise, but there can be little doubt that he created one of the greatest movie characters of the 20th century. Plenty of actors are intrinsically linked with their most famous roles; just take Harrison Ford, who pulled off the feat of embodying not just one but two iconic characters,...

One of the first things that come to mind about James Mangold's 1997 crime drama "Cop Land" is its stacked cast — and how some of them played against type. Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro were just the tip of the macho iceberg in a who's-who ensemble of stars and familiar character actors. There was also Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Malik Yoba -- the list goes on and on. Even smaller roles utilized notable Martin Scorsese alumni like Cathy Moriarty and Frank Vincent, and future "The Sopranos" stars Edie Falco and Tony Sirico (the latter of whom only appears in a surveillance photo). This was the movie that put "Rocky" and "Raging Bull" in the ring together and had Stallone gain 40 pounds to play a half-deaf sheriff in a New Jersey town populated by corrupt cops.

I have to admit that I thought "Rocky Balboa" sounded pretty awful at first. 16 years after the popular franchise came to a disappointing close with "Rocky V," Sylvester Stallone was bringing his famous fighter back for one last shot at glory in his sixties. Surely it was going to be bad, right? Instead, Stallone proved once again that you can never write off the Italian Stallion, creating one of the most emotionally-satisfying entries in the whole series, a movie that took a heartfelt look at aging, loneliness, and grief before delivering a typically rousing finale. It is a fitting end to the "Rocky" saga in a way the fifth movie definitely wasn't, which is what motivated Stallone to give Rocky another comeback. He told the Chicago Sun-Times:
"I wanted to wrap up Rocky's story with a sense of hope, and 'Rocky V' didn't have that feeling at all.

One of the more well-known and fascinating obstacles that come with filmmaking is studio interference. There have been plenty of interesting stories from acclaimed directors behind blockbusters and lesser-known projects that have had to fight for the integrity of their vision. Sometimes it can be a losing battle, but there have been some pretty crazy stories in recent memory that showed the potential of staying true to the story you want to tell. The industry landscape has changed in recent years, where social media campaigns and crowdfunding can now help filmmakers to achieve their story aspirations without interference.
A more recent example would be Jim Cummings and Pj McCabe's "The Beta Test," a film that "circumvented the system" in the words of its directors, who made their film with no interference. In the case of films made decades earlier, it wasn't as easy. For example, director James Mangold's second-ever feature,...

James Mangold's sophomore feature film "Cop Land" has interesting intersections of genre and tone that, in hindsight, are telling of the director's future projects. Starring big-name talent like Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, and Harvey Keitel, the film tells the story of a sheriff in a small New Jersey town who comes into conflict with a group of corrupt New York police officers who live in the community. "Cop Land" is a slow burn that thrives off the incredible performances of its actors, mainly Stallone. Equal parts social commentary and suspenseful thriller, "Cop Land" is a successful ensemble that had plenty of influences to its story, according to director James Mangold.
Even looking past "Cop Land," Mangold has been transparent in his inspirations when making movies. One of the most recent examples is 2017's "Logan," a film whose title and themes of violence pull directly from the 1953 Western "Shane.

I’ll Be Right There follows a single mother, Wanda (Falco), who has her hands full to say the least: her eight month pregnant daughter (Carter) wants a wedding, her mother (Berlin) thinks she’s dying, her wayward son (Tahan) is either going into rehab or the army, and she barely has time for herself, not that she would know what to do with it anyway.

Everyone is keenly aware that circumstances have changed for our dear Dr. Jones as we head into the fifth (and ostensibly final) Indiana Jones film. For starters, director Steven Spielberg opted for the first time in the franchise’s history to relinquish the director’s reins, leaving the still untitled Indiana Jones 5 in the hands of director James Mangold. Additionally, Harrison Ford’s beloved fedora-wearing alter-ego is no longer the youthful underdog from the original trilogy of films in the 1980s. When last we saw Ford as Indiana, the actor was already 66. And that was in 2008.
He’ll be just a few weeks shy of 81 when Indiana Jones 5 rolls into theaters next year. Yet, to hear Ford and Mangold tell it, that’s the advantage that makes a fifth and final Indy adventure worth following.
“I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones...
