We head back a decade to look at a few films that deserve more attention. Here’s our list of 25 underappreciated movies of 2004...
Think back to 2004, and you might dredge up hazy memories of the computer-generated fairytale sequel Shrek 2, Alfonso’s Harry Potter installment, The Prisoner Of Azkaban, or maybe Mel Gibson’s phenomenally successful Passion Of The Christ.
It’s rather less likely that you’ll remember some of the films on this list. You’re probably aware of the drill by now: we’ve gone back into our distant, beer-addled memories to find 25 of the less commonly-lauded movies from the year 2004.
Some of them did reasonably well at the time, but appear to have been forgotten since (especially the one eclipsed by its own internet meme), while others were coolly received by the public or critics (and sometimes...

Juliette celebrates ten geek TV moments in which music and story are inseperable, with help from Buffy, Quantum Leap, Star Trek & more...
There are great dialogue-free scenes (most of Buffy’s Hush for one) and there are great silent or music-free moments (the credit sequences in Game of Thrones’ The Rains of Castamere and The Walking Dead’s The Killer Inside, most of Buffy’s The Body). But here, we’re celebrating musical moments where the score or soundtrack comes to the fore. The scene may or may not include dialogue, the music may be part of the scene (the technical term for this is diegetic) or part of the score, that is, music that does not exist for the characters but enhances the experience for the viewer (non-diegetic or extra-diegetic). However it’s set up, however it’s used, there are moments where...

"Batman: Detective Comics Volume 2: Scare Tactics" collects issues 8 through 12, 0, and the annual for the Dark Knight's flagship monthly title. Unlike most of the past collections, this one is comprised of several stories penciled by many different artists. We usually get two or three different story arcs, but this time there's a few one-shot stories and one tale that stretches across multiple issues.
"Scare Tactics" has Batman going after the wrong criminal. Someone is using the Scarecrow's toxin to further their own diabolical plan. Can the Dark Knight track down the real criminal looking to strike fear into the heart of Gotham?
"The Owls Take Arkham" drops Batman directly into the center of the most dangerous asylum in the DC Universe. He must find a way to rescue Jeremiah Arkham from being assassinated by the Talons under orders of the Court of Owls. In the process, he runs into a...

While we wait around to see his new film Tabloid (which, between our recording this episode and its publication, has a new trailer – see below), we thought it appropriate to take a look at Errol Morris’s First Person, the two-season TV series Morris directed. Mike, Derek and Simon pick out three of the series’ seventeen portraits of the damaged, the brilliant and the disturbed: “The Killer Inside Me,” starring “serial killer groupie” Sandra London; “I Dismember Mama,” the tale of a man, a dream, and a frozen head; and “One in a Million Trillion,” the story of what happens when an immovable object meets Regis Philbin.

Subject: Jack Black, 41-year old actor and musician
Date of Assessment: May 25, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Frat pack, voice work
Negative Buzzwords: Limited range, annoying
The Case: Not too terribly long ago, Dustin predicted that, between Year One and Gulliver's Travels, Jack Black's career would almost certainly soon be over. One can only hope this is the case, for any actor who has appeared in such classics as Bongwater, Johnny Skidmarks, and some straight-to-video movie called Laser Fart shouldn't have achieved the mainstream Hollywood success that Jack Black has somehow enjoyed until recently.
And yet...
About ten years ago, Jack Black had already been puttering around Hollywood for a good decade or so, but it was High Fidelity that really brought him mainstream attention. And although High Fidelity is a film beloved by many (and has spawned many mixtapes), it inadvertently kick started Black's ascent into quasi-superstardom. Soon after, he was...

If you can't stomach Michael Winterbottom's bloody tale of a murderous deputy sheriff – aka Casey Affleck – try digesting Paul MacInnes's condensed script instead
The Killer Inside MEBy Paul MacInnes, with apologies to John Curran and Jim Thompson
Scene 1
Int. Night - Central City, Texas. The 1950s. The kitchenette of Deputy Sheriff Casey Affleck. A winsome country Ballad is playing on the Radio. We see Casey Affleck's smiling Face. It is spattered with Blood as, out of shot, his Fists pummel beneath him.
Kate Hudson [out of shot, screaming]: No! No! Oh my god! No!
Affleck continues to pummel and the camera pulls tighter into his narrow, drawn face. His smile grows broader.
Hudson: Oh god … oh god … Please dear Lord, stop!
Affleck stops pummelling. The smile drains away.
Affleck: Hey, can't you see I'm tenderising some beef here? Do you want your dinner or not?
Cut to Hudson, curled up in a corner of the Kitchenette.

“The Killer Inside Me may be the darkest film noir ever made”
-Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
The haunting new film The Killer Inside Me has been on our minds for months now. It inspired some controversial write-ups after its screenings at the Sundance, Berlin, and Tribeca Festivals, and once we saw it we couldn’t forget it. After some wrangling, we’re finally able to bring this film to Austin the way it deserves, with some late night screenings all throughout next week. It’s the perfect after-dinner film, played during the dark hours when good seems boring and bad seems…well, not so bad.

Apple has the brand new trailer for the Sundance hit The Killer Inside Of Me starring Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. Whoa whoa whoa Whoa...Kate Hudson?? Crap. There's even a shot in the trailer where Kate opens her jacket to reveal her boy b...oh God, I just threw up in my mouth... From director Michael Winterbotton comes The Killer Inside Me which has electrified audiences at the Sundance, Berlin and Tribeca Film Festivals. Based on the classic novel by legendary pulp writer Jim Thompson, The Killer Inside Me tells the story of handsome, unassuming small town sheriff’s deputy Lou Ford (Casey Affleck). A quiet charmer of his idyllic West Texas town, Ford has a simple life and a pretty girl...

First a disclaimer: I'm a great fan of the mercurial filmmaker Michael Winterbottom. I admire his hunger to reinvent himself by biting into a broad range of genres. High points from his oeuvre include Jude, a haunting adaptation of Thomas Hardy (who can forget Kate Winslet as poor Sue Bridehead lying naked on the bed, trying to feel sexual?); In This World, a faux documentary about Afghan refugees; Code 46, a sci fi love story; A Mighty Heart, from Mariane Pearl's memoir; and the shag-a-thon that was Nine Days. Is there anything the man won't try? Now, with The Killer Inside, Me, Winterbottom attempts a noir thriller. It's adapted from the cult novel by 50's pulp writer Jim Thompson (The Grifters), who specialized in tales of homicidal sickos. Because of the violence visited upon female characters...

The works of noted genre author Jim Thompson have made for some surprisingly interesting films over the years. The Steve McQueen / Ali McGraw rendition of The Getaway (1972) is fairly well-remembered, and I myself am a fan of the Alec Baldwin / Kim Basiniger version from 1994. There's also James Foley's After Dark, My Sweet and Stephen Frears' The Grifters, both of which hit in 1990 and did solid justice to the author's work. The most recent filmmaker to tackle the beloved scribe's hard-boiled tales is Michael Winterbottom, whom you probably know from Wonderland, 24 Hour Party People, and Tristram Shandy -- but I don't think you've ever seen Winterbottom like you see him with The Killer Inside...

Banksy's quixotic debut film is not only a triumph of guerrilla marketing; it's the closest the anonymous graffiti artist has come to unmasking himself
Demetrios Matheou on Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside
All our coverage of the premiere of Chris Morris's Four Lions
More from Sundance
By the time the world premiere of Banksy's debut movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop, unfolded at Sundance on Sunday night, the master of mystique had already sprayed his aerosol aura over Park City. Days earlier, five works attributed to the celebrated urban artist had sprung up on walls around town, inspiring ripples of admiration and indignation.
As guerrilla marketing goes it may be a long time before festivalgoers see anything as good as this again. Indeed, the air of mystery remained intact throughout the enterprise, from the moment Exit Through the Gift Shop was unveiled as a surprise screening last week to,...

Georgia
Opens: 2010
Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech
Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.
Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three...

Lots of trailers this week, with something for just about everyone. There's action movies, animated flicks, romantic comedies for menopausal ladies, video game adaptations, serious family drama, weird western/film noir flicks where Jessica Alba gets her bare ass strapped by a belt (and loves it)...and Uwe Boll.
We finally got to see Angelina's Salt and Prince of Persia, the summer blockbuster (or that's the hope) with Jake Gyllenhaal. But the one that really grabbed our attention was The Killer Inside, a twisted bit of sociopathy with Casey Affleck as a demented lawman who gets raunchy with Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. Twisted, twisted stuff for Alba. And it's a longer trailer than the norm, because it's being used as a sales tool this weekend at the American Film Market.

About three months ago, we discussed the very cool adaptation in the works for The Killer Inside Me. Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba will star in the film, based on the novel by The Dimestore Dostoyevsky, Jim Thompson.
If you're not familiar with Thompson's name, you probably are familiar with his work, which includes two Stanley Kubrick movies (Paths to Glory and The Killing), plus The Grifters, The Getaway, and After Dark, My Sweet. Dark stuff, mostly, and The Killer Inside Me would suggest more of the same based on the title alone. And yes, it's pretty screwed up stuff.
Affleck will play a sheriff who over the course of the film becomes a homicidal maniac, while Alba plays a pro. Screen Daily has announced that four new cast members have signed on - Kate Hudson, Elias Koteas, Bill Pullman and Ned Beatty. Odd that Hudson would show up here.

Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba will star in The Killer Inside Me, an adaptation of a novel from noir author Jim Thompson that Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart, 24 Hour Party People) will direct. The story is told through the eyes of a deputy sheriff (Affleck) in a small Texas town. Ford seems to be a regular, slightly boring, normal, and at times dumb and lazy small town cop with few obsessions. However, he is slowly revealed to be a deeply disturbed murderer—one who is paranoid-schizophrenic, sociopathic, cunning, and ruthless. The film will follow the sheriff’s downward spiral. Alba plays a prostitute. Robert Weinbach and John Curran penned the screenplay. The novel was written in 1952 and was made into a 1976 film which was directed by Burt Kennedy and starred Stacy Keach as the sheriff. Chris Hanley (American Psycho), Andrew Eaton (The Road to Guantanamo) and Bradford Schlei (Swingers) are producing the latest adaptation,...
