New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment’s five selections reflect the month of June 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a father gone mad, deadly dares, and more.

Summer officially begins in June, so why not watch a horror movie whose story is set under the hot sun? The TV oddity High Desert Kill seems like it’s about another camping trip gone wrong, with its male cast setting off for the New Mexico wilderness. Many of Stephen King’s horror works, including novels and short stories, have turned into movie adaptations. Some were highly successful, namely the It two-parter. Some others, such as Thinner and The Night Flier, were straight-out fiascos. This year, director Rob Savage adapted King’s 1973 short story The Boogeyman into a feature movie with A Quiet Place screenwriting duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods alongside Black Swan‘s Mark Heyman. The movie stars Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair as the Harper sisters. They are still reeling from the recent death of their mother in an automobile accident. After their father, Will...

“An egotistical tabloid reporter attempts to track down a vampire/amateur pilot who’s been feasting on the unlucky inhabitants of several rural airfields.” This premise shouldn’t have worked. It too closely resembles something thrown out during a high school creative writing class that’s gone off the rails. But Stephen King, who has done some of his […]

There's another Stephen King movie on the way! His novella, The Gingerbread Girl, is the latest story of his to get picked up for a feature film adaptation. The rights to the story were snatched up by Brainstorm Media.
The Gingerbread Girl was originally published in Esquire magazine and was later included in King’s 2008 collection of stories Just After Sunset.
For those of you not familiar with the story, it focuses on a woman named Emily, who is "recovering from a recent loss in a secluded house in the loneliest stretch of New England. She avoids contact with her husband and her father and channels her grief into a grueling daily running regimen. This is doing her all kinds of good, until one day she makes the mistake of looking into the driveway of a man named Pickering. Pickering also enjoys privacy, but the young women he brings to...

Our lookbacks at the screen adaptations of Stephen King find us at Thinner, starring Robert John Burke...
The film: Morbidly obese and deeply unpleasant lawyer Billy Halleck (Robert John Burke) runs over an old gypsy woman with his car, distracted by his wife Heidi (Lucinda Jenney) who is doing something rather rude to him. His ties to the local law enforcement, Judge Cary Rossington (John Horton) and Chief of Police Duncan Hopley (Daniel von Bargen), means the case is dismissed before it gets to court. However, the old woman’s father (Michael Constantine) has a different kind of justice in mind. He curses Halleck with the word ‘thinner’ and soon, Halleck begins to lose weight at a dangerous and ever-increasing rate.

Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.
Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released...

With the popularity of Stephen King exploding right now, Looper has released a video that breaks down what they feel are the 10 worst and 10 best films that have been adapted from his work.
I personally don't agree with the lists that they've put together. For example, they put Dreamcatcher and Needful Things on the list of worst movies, which is ridiculous because those are two of my favorites! On top of that, they don't even include Pet Cemetary on the Best list, but they have Dolores Claiborne. This list was made before Geralds Game was released, but I'd definitely but that on the best list as well.
I understand that these lists are a personal opinion, so watch the video breakdown below and let us know what you would change on the list!

Drag is a something of a legendary post-apocalyptic film. Directed by Mark Pavia way back in the pre-internet land of 1993, the 16 mm zombie short was championed by the master of horror himself, Stephen King, after Pavia sent him a copy in the mail.
When King saw it he was so impressed that he brought Pavia to write and direct an adaptation of The Night Flier, now something of vampire cult classic that premiered on HBO.
Shot in and around Pavia's home town of Lockport, Illinois, Drag was also an early effort by Academy Award winning Dp Mauro Fiore (Avatar)

Fender Bender is written and directed by Mark Pavia, whose last film was the 1997 Stephen King adaptation of The Night Flier. The film follows Hilary (Makenzie Vega) is just an average high-school cheerleader who wants to get good grades and do right by her strict parents, but she's about to have the worst day of her life. She's discovered that her jock boyfriend is fooling around on her with another cheerleader and then he sees that she's caught them and confronts her. Thankfully, she breaks up with him and drives away. Sitting at a stop sign distraught, she is texting when she gets rear ended by a man who's got an odd affect about him (the terrific Bill Sage). They exchange information and Hilary is smart enough...

As someone who has a soft spot in her heart for road-set thrillers like The Hitcher, Joy Ride, The Hills Have Eyes, Splinter, Kalifornia, Breakdown, or even the granddaddy of them all, Duel, I really had a lot of fun with writer/director Mark Pavia’s lean and mean slasher Fender Bender. It has a well-conceived story that (mostly) stays on the rails, characters that don’t feel like they’re trying to insult my intelligence as a horror fan, and a finale that takes us in unexpected directions.
Fender Bender begins by honoring its slasher roots through an opening scene that establishes its killer before picking up with the film’s true heroine, Hilary (Makenzie Vega), a high schooler who is probably having the worst day ever, and she hasn’t even met The Driver (Bill Sage) yet. She snuck out of the house to catch her cheating boyfriend (Harrison Sim) in the act,...

Exchanging information after an accident on the road is usually the responsible, smart thing to do… except when the car you collided with belongs to a killer. Ahead of Fender Bender’s June 3rd premiere on the Chiller channel, the official trailer for Scream Factory’s new horror film teases the deadliness of the Driver.
Written and Directed by Mark Pavia (Stephen King’s The Night Flier), Fender Bender stars Makenzie Vega (The Good Wife), Dre Davis (Pretty Little Liars, Scavenger Killers), Cassidy Freeman (Smallville, Longmire) and Bill Sage (American Psycho, We Are What We Are). Evocative of the horror-thriller classics of yesteryear, Fender Bender brings you back to a time when the boxes on the shelf at your local video store beckoned you with masked, knife-wielding maniacs and a twisted sense of morals.

Vampire. Envision the creature. Do you picture the classic cloaked version? Or the frilly shirt-wearing kind? Or the feral? Or god forbid the sparkly ones? Vampires come in all shapes and sizes, and with Rigor Mortis coming to Blu-ray and DVD on July 8th, we decided to take a look at some of our favorites.
Ever since Bram Stoker brought us Dracula, filmmakers and storytellers have been modifying vamps and making them into all sorts of unique beasties. Some are pretty and some are really, really ugly… but they all drink blood and use humans like we use cattle.
Rigor Mortis features a very unique type of vampire, and it's always fun to see a creature that expands the legend.
So let's take a look at some of the coolest types of vampires that have come into our lives.
For starters, we'll begin with the classic vampire. And what do we mean by "classic" vampire?...

They are perhaps the most versatile monster we know. The vampire. Sometimes sexy, sometimes proper, sometimes feral, sometimes classic. The vampire comes in so many different forms.
With the release of Black Water Vampire on DVD and VOD tomorrow, January 21st, we celebrate the Top 11 Most Vicious Vampires.
There are so many to choose from. Vampires have been present in movies and television forever, so picking out the most vicious is no mean feat. We've done our best to narrow it down to the Top 11 but also have our usual honorable mentions to help flesh out the list (pun definitely intended).
We'd like to recognize the infected Alpha male vampire from I Am Legend; that dude was simply badass. In any version of Salem's Lot, be it either of the television mini-series or the book, Kurt Barlow has always been Type 1 brutal. Chris Sarandon's Jerry Dandridge in Fright Night...

Since horror, as a genre, tends to have a smaller viewing audience than action films, romantic comedies, and tear-jerking love stories, it seems like the available titles are at a higher risk for going on manufacturing moratorium. When that happens, fans of the genre frequently turn to eBay bidding wars, scouring pawnshops, and even trying to locate bootleg copies of the title in question for no less than a king’s ransom. Vigilant collectors, such as myself, tend to keep an eye on titles we suspect are at risk for going out of print... for example, Code Red and Blue Underground both tend to have a good number of titles go out of print at any given time. Staying on top of titles destined for moratorium makes the cash one must fork over for a copy of an in-demand title much less painful; often when a film first falls out of production,...

Based on King's 1988 short story about an airport-hopping vampire serial killer, The Night Flier was sadly overlooked for theatrical release and has become a cult favorite since its debut on HBO in 1997 and the home video releases that followed. But the recent discovery of more than an hour of behind-the-scenes footage reveals what we've been missing all these years. A YouTuber calling himself Dwight Renfield recently posted a clip containing nearly 70 minutes of video shot during the making of the film, showing director Mark Pavia chatting with stars Miguel Ferrer and Julie Entwisle on set, the crew maneuvering the killer's eerie black Cessna airplane, and of course the Night Flier himself in full monster mode, with many practical effects on display. Check it out! Stephen King's The Night Flier - Never Before Seen Footage! Renfield has launched an online campaign petitioning New Amsterdam Entertainment to release The Night Flier on Blu-ray,...

Easily one of the most overlooked horror films of recent memory is the Mark Pavia directed adaptation of Stephen King’s The Night Flier. Featuring a great performance by Miguel Ferrer and some kick ass FX work by Knb. It has always kind of lingered in horror no mans land and I’ve never understood why.
Well, apparently neither has another fan going by the name of Dwight Renfield this fan has posted up over an hour of never before seen coolness from the film. He states he is doing so in hopes of generating interest in a Blu-ray release and I can tell you he’s definitely got my attention as well as my vote.
If you’ve never seen The Night Flier well, what the hell is wrong with you. Go get the damn thing and watch it then come back here and check out this extra footage.

The 1997 film, The Night Flier, may not be the most famous adaptation of a Stephen King story, but it still has its loyal fans that will be happy to learn of an hour long video that has emerged with never-before-seen footage.
The video multiple features aspects of the filmmaking process, from set preparation to the visual effects behind the airplane sequences. The film’s writer and director Mark Pavia can be seen interacting with the cast and crew, which was perhaps the last time he was on a film set as a director, as we haven’t seen any new features from him since. You can see what it was like on the set of The Night Flier by checking out the video below.
The Night Flier follows journalists Richard Dees (Miguel Ferrer) and Katherine Blair (Julie Entwhistle) on the hunt for a vampire who leaves behind a trail of murder.

The Night Flier has garnered a peculiar fanbase. I see it on Facebook fan pages and they're a persistent bunch, but at least their love is going to a film that deserves recognition.
The Stephen King adaptation hit in 1997 and was directed by Mark Pavia. Miguel Ferrer and Julie Entwisle (who never went on to appear in anything else, sadly) starred in this tale of a reporter stalking a vampire. And, today, an email from a "Dwight Renfield" (cute) floated our way touting a YouTube video that contains over an hour of "never before seen" footage.
If you're a fan of the film, definitely worth your while...

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.

Justin Long might always be remembered as .the Mac guy,. because his commercials for the computer giant so far have eclipsed his film work. Long has appeared in a Die Hard sequel, Galaxy Quest, two Jeepers Creepers movies, Dodgeball and a string of Alvin and the Chipmunks flicks, but maybe a potential collaboration on a vintage Stephen King short story will put him over the top. Long, according to Deadline, is angling for the lead role in an adaptation of The Ten O.Clock People, which Tom Holland will write and direct. The plot follows a character named Brandon Pearson on his quest to quit smoking, only his efforts lead to some disturbing developments. The story was published in King.s 1993 compilation Nightmares & Dreamscapes, which has inspired film versions of two other tales: The Night Flier and Dolan.s Cadillac. After getting what could be called a harsh wake-up call after the huge success of The Avengers, Warner Bros. is finally moving forward with their long-gestating Justice League movie (2007 was the last time work had progressed on it). Will Beall -who has already landed writing gigs on other Warner Bros. hopefuls, including Logan’s Run, Gangster Squad and a Lethal Weapon reboot- will script the feature. Admittedly, though, Warners has an uphill battle. Their only successful DC franchise has been Batman, and since the Christopher Nolan version is very well set in real-life, it will have to contend with on much they want that trilogy to impact what has to be a more fantasy based aspect of a team-up movie in the vein of The Avengers. It’s also been reported that Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Suicide Squad and Shazam (a.k.a., Captain Marvel) are all in development at the studio,...

Tom Holland ("Child's Play," the original "Fright Night") has signed on to write and direct an adaptation of Stephen King's short story "The Ten O’Clock People" says Deadline.
The story, think John Carpenter's "They Live" but with demons rather than aliens, follows a Boston man who is trying to kick his smoking habit. As a result of this, a unique chemical imbalance allows him to see a frightening aspect of reality he hadn't previously seen - that many people living in positions of power are actually inhuman monsters disguised as people.
The story was first published in the 1993 anthology "Nightmares And Dreamscapes" which also contained the stories "The Night Flier" and "Dolan's Cadillac" which were both adapted to film. Five stories from the collection made up a TNT anthology series of the same name in 2006.

Looks like we're going to get a new Stephen King anthology horror film! The movie will be called Stephen King's The Reaper's Image, which is the title of one of the stories. Mark Pavia (The Night Flier) is set to direct the movie, which will include four different story adaptations from the master of horror. Those stories include, The Reaper's Image, Mile 81, N., and The Monkey. Two of these were chosen by Pavia and two were chosen by King. Below, you'll find a description of each of the stories.
The Reaper’s Image:
This story was first published in Startling Mystery Stories in 1969 and collected in Skeleton Crew in 1985. The story is about an antique mirror haunted by the visage of the Grim Reaper, who appears to those who gaze into it. This was King’s second professional sale and commercially published story.

Earlier this year we reported on Mark (The Night Flier) Pavia's new anthology film based on several Stephen King tales, and now we know which stories are being included as well as what the film will be titled. Read on for the details.
The Fire Wire confirms that the film will be named Stephen King's The Reaper's Image after one of the stories (The Reaper's Image) and along with that tale will include Mile 81, N., and The Monkey. Two were chosen by Pavia with King himself picking the other two. Descriptions of all four follow below:

Earlier this year, we reported that director Mark Pavia (The Night Flier) was working on a new Stephen King anthology movie. We now know the title, as well as the four stories that will be featured in the film:
The movie will be called The Reaper’s Image and takes its title from Stephen King’s short story of the same name. The four segments of the anthology are all adaptations of previously released King stories:
The Reaper’s Image: “Jonathan Spangler investigates a mirror with a unique history. The DeIver looking glass is one of just five created by John DeIver, and Spangler is interested in its authenticity, not its historical rumors that those people that see the Reaper in the reflection disappear forever.”
Mile 81: “By the time Pete Simmons wakes up from his vodka nap, there are a half a dozen cars at the Mile 81 rest stop.

Pavia tells Icons of Fright that "Steve chose two of the stories and I chose two — the selection a perfect mixture of classic and contemporary King, a little bit of something for his oldest and newest fans alike. It will be a true representation of his different personas, his varied styles and voices throughout the years. Everything from the horror showman at his pulpiest to his most introverted and introspective character pieces, which can also be his most frightening."
Pavia previously directed the 1997 adaptation of King's "The Night Flier" about a journalist that tracks a vampire pilot.
