Updated: There has been another round of content removal from Disney+, this time in the Emea region, which consists of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. More than 120 titles have been taken off this week, primarily Disney Channel original movies and vintage Disney live-action films, as well as a few series, including Zeke and Luther, Pepper Ann, So Random and the first three seasons of Nat Geo’s Genius and ESPN/Nat Geo docs.
According to sources, the takedowns were a result of a library title review. There have been several content purges at Disney+ over the last year amid cost-cutting, most notably the removal of a slew of original series last May.
Here is a list of movie titles that are said to be gone from Disney+ in Emea, compiled by Drew Ryan.

There is a snippet of “The Illiad, or The Poem of Force,” Simone Weil’s 1940 essay about the blind poet Homer’s Trojan War epic, that has always stuck with me: “The progress of the war in the Iliad is simply a continual game of seesaw. The victor of the moment feels himself invincible, even though, only a few hours before, he may have experienced defeat; he forgets to treat victory as a transitory thing.”
The Golden State Warriors seemed invincible once. Now, far from it. Nobody saw this coming five years ago,...

The Federal Trade Commission sued Amazon on Wednesday, accusing the tech and retail giant of deceiving customers into subscribing to Amazon Prime, then convoluting the process to cancel their subscriptions.
“For years, Defendant Amazon.com, Inc. has knowingly duped millions of consumers into unknowingly enrolling in its Amazon Prime service,” the FTC alleged in its suit, reviewed by Rolling Stone and filed in the U.S. District Court’s Western District of Washington. “Specifically, Amazon used manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs known as “dark patterns” to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically-renewing Prime subscriptions.

Wolfgang Petersen, the Oscar-nominated director of throwback epics like “Das Boot” and “The Perfect Storm,” has died at the age of 81. Deadline first reported the news of his passing.
In addition to the WWII submarine warfare film that earned six Academy Award nominations including Best Director, Petersen also directed 1984’s beloved family favorite “The NeverEnding Story,” “Enemy Mine” (1985), Clint Eastwood political thriller “In the Line of Fire” (1993), pandemic disaster movie “Outbreak” (1995), Harrison Ford presidential hijacking thriller “Air Force One” (1997), and swords-and-sandals tentpole “Troy” (2004).
Petersen was born in Germany in 1941, and it was in Hamburg in the 1960s that he started directing plays before moving into TV movies for German television, eventually gaining notices for his 1974 psychological thriller debut “One or the Other of Us.” But Petersen reached an international audience with the 1982 release of “Das Boot,” a nearly three-hour German-language underwater film about the men serving aboard German WWII U-boats.

First of all, sorry if this bursts anyone’s bubble, but sadly Xena: Warrior Princess is not a ‘real’ character from Greek myth. Whereas Hercules and Iolaus from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys are both important characters from Greek mythology, the three most important characters in Xena: Warrior Princess – Xena, Gabrielle, and Callisto – are all original characters with entirely original stories.
Xena does have things in common with some characters from Greek myth. Most obviously, the Amazons are a ‘real’ Greek myth – not a real people, but a mythical tribe who appear in numerous stories from Greek mythology. They were described as a tribe of warrior women, who cut off one breast to make it easier to shoot arrows – oddly enough, the show left out that detail!
The closest non-Amazon character to Xena is probably Atalanta, a huntress who killed centaurs with arrows (with both breasts intact), won a wrestling...

Mubi's retrospective For Ever Godard is showing from November 12, 2017 - January 16, 2018 in the United States.Jean-Luc Godard is a difficult filmmaker to pin down because while his thematic concerns as an artist have remained more or less consistent over the last seven decades, his form is ever-shifting. His filmography is impossible to view in a vacuum, as his work strives to reflect on the constantly evolving cinema culture that surrounds it: Godard always works with the newest filmmaking technologies available, and his films have become increasingly abstracted and opaque as the wider culture of moving images has become increasingly fragmented. Rather than working to maintain an illusion of diegetic truth, Godard’s work as always foreground its status as a manufactured product—of technology, of an industry, of on-set conditions and of an individual’s imagination. Mubi’S Godard retrospective exemplifies the depth and range of Godard’s career as...

The question of authorship has always been a fascinating one. When a book is published, people tend to take for granted that the person who wrote it is a real living, breathing human being. With a brief author’s bio and a smiling picture, why would you question it? What would be the point of making up an identity?
As it turns out there are plenty of reasons why a person or company might want to present somebody as real when they’re not: like if that person happens to be saying nice things about your company, or is purporting to have lived an incredibly interesting (and marketable) life.
On top of that, the further back in time we travel, the harder it is to truly prove a person’s existence, even those figures who are considered household names.

Pinned, Stitched, and Glitzed: Challenging Gender Stereotypes The Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery, John Jay College, NYC September 9 - November 13, 2015
The exhibition entitled "Pinned, Stitched and Glitzed: Challenging Gender Stereotypes," on view at the Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, explores mixed media in imagery that injects refreshing diversity to an art scene steeped in minimal art, conceptual art, and the enduring New York School. Curated by Thalia Vrachopoulos the show attempts to deconstruct the traditional female gender identification with the finely crafted handwork. The artists on view employ creative methods that transgresses the social expectation that dainty, precise art is the province of women while bold powerful art is reserved for men, including trans-gender and gay men. The show focuses on a variety of wall works and paintings comprised of cumulative segments that contribute to the final unified work. Renee Magnanti, Eozen Agopian, Maria Karametou,...

The Night Manager writer David Farr is teaming up with the BBC on a mythological prestige drama.
Troy: Fall of A City will bring the majesty and wonder of the Trojan War to a whole new generation as a multi-part series.
Farr's drama will re-examine the Judgement of Paris, a key event in the ancient world's most prominent tales.

Here is the first installment of “Comics Mythos”, a semi-regular column about the literary and mythological roots of comic book characters (mostly superheroes). This article will look at the powerhouses of comics, or the “supermen”. (After the Big Blue Boy Scout, not Friedrich Nietzsche’s “Ubermensch”.)
In the world of superheroes, it seems that feats of physical strength and acrobatic prowess are possibly the most prevalent demonstration of super powers. One must wonder if such physical powers are a product of the time in which these comics were originally produced – the 1930s for DC’s iconic Superman and 1941 for Marvel’s super soldier, Captain America – or does this sort of hero have roots that extend deeper into literary history. Obviously, mythology is full of heroes who have superhuman strength, stamina, and agility with Thor and Hercules being the most famous in the world of comics for their huge roles in...

A couple of months ago, Lionsgate indicated they were readying an adaptation of Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, for the big-screen. Francis Lawrence (who has a good existing relationship with the studio, having directed all but the first in their Hunger Games cycle) was pegged to direct, and now the film looks to have found a star in Hugh Jackman.
Jackman will play Odysseus, the legendary hero who underwent a decade long struggle to return to Greece following the Trojan war. Jackman has the physique of a Greek God, so portraying one of the nation’s mortal luminaries should be a piece of cake. Expect him to face off against all manner of trial, tribulation and mythic CGI adversary, as this sounds like it’s going to be a period retelling.

Known for his role as superhero icon Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is now eyeing a legendary adventurer of a very different kind.

Set after the end of the Trojan War, The Odyssey concerns Odysseus's eventful and monster-filled ten-year voyage home and the dangerous welcome he finds when he gets there.

The last time Hollywood took on Odysseus, we got Troy. But Lionsgate is planning a film based on a different part of the character’s life, with Francis Lawrence developing a take on Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. And now they want Hugh Jackman to star.At this point, it’s very early days for the discussions – The Wrap reports that the Wolverine star has just started considering the idea, but has had several conversations with Lawrence and the producers about taking on the lead. If he does agree to star, he’ll be playing Odysseus in the aftermath of the Trojan War, on a 10-year quest to return home, during which time his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with those who assume he’s long dead and are in particular vying for Penelope’s attention as potential new husbands. Once he has a cast in place,...

It looks like Hollywood is swinging for the fences, going for the grandaddy of Western canon literature: Homer's "The Odyssey." That grand work will now be reduced/adapted into a blockbuster movie, with an actor who knows a thing or two about green screens and CGI. The Wrap reports that The Wolverine, a.k.a. Hugh Jackman, is in early talks to star in the movie for Lionsgate. Francis Lawrence ("I Am Legend," "The Hunger Games: All The Movies Except The First One") will direct the movie that sees our hero venture home from the Trojan War and writing poetry. Nah, just joking, he's going to have some epic adventures. Read More: Hugh Jackman Will Appear In 'X-Men: Apocalypse,' Ian McKellen Will Not Peter Craig ("The Town," "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1") wrote the script, and if all goes according to plan, shooting will kick off next year.

The Wraps reckons Cbm fave Hugh Jackman is in early talks to play Odysseus in Lionsgate's big screen adaptation of the epic Greek poem, The Odyssey. Apparently no deal is in place yet, but the actor has had "multiple conversations with the filmmaking team" about coming aboard. Homer's Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus' perilous voyage back to Ithaca after the Trojan War, the events of which are detailed in The Iliad. Some of the dangers he encounters on his voyage include cannibals, the wrath of the God of the Sea, Poseidon, and of course the infamous Cyclops. Keep in mind though, there is a possibility all of the more fantastical elements could be stripped from the tale in favor of a more "realistic" approach. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay parts 1 and 2 director Francis Lawrence will take the helm, and there is currently no release date. Do you think this...

April 20th, 1938 marked Adolf Hitler’s 49th birthday. In the past five years, he’d rebuilt Germany from destitute anarchy into a burgeoning war machine, repudiated the Versailles Treaty and, that March, incorporated Austria into his Thousand-Year Reich. In Nazi Germany, fantasy co-mingled with ideology, expressing an obsession with Germany’s mythical past through propaganda and art. Fittingly, Hitler celebrated at the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin, Germany’s most prestigious cinema.
There, Nazi officials and foreign diplomats joined dignitaries of German kultur. Present were Wilhelm Furtwangler, conductor of Berlin’s Philharmonic Orchestra; Albert Speer, Hitler’s architect and confidante; actor Gustaf Grundgens, transformed from Brechtian Bolshevik to director of Prussia’s State Theater; and movie star Emil Jannings, Oscar-winner of The Lost Command and The Blue Angel, now an Artist of the State. The BBC have beaten the gods to it and destroyed Atlantis before Zeus had so much as prepped his thunderbolt. What we don’t know is what they’ll produce to replace it. Surely our autumnal Saturday teatimes can’t go without a fantastically themed family show to accompany our dinner, and Doctor Who can’t run all year round unless the props department manage to produce an actual time machine.

Lionsgate is banking on the team behind its mega-successful Hunger Games franchise to work similar magic on an adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem The Odyssey, which the studio hopes will birth an ambitious franchise. Simultaneously, execs are looking at Homer’s other epic, The Iliad, as another potential tentpole.
“We’re feeling very, very bullish,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Rob Friedman said recently about the in-development project. Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) is attached to direct The Odyssey, working with Hunger Games writer Peter Craig and producer Nina Jacobson. The plan for that adaptation “contemplates more than one movie,” according to CEO Jon Feltheimer.

It seems that Lionsgate is keen to capitalize on the winning Hunger Games formula, by setting its makers the task of delivering a new film version of Homer’s The Odyssey. The sweeping epic is now in development, and is scheduled to begin production in early 2016, immediately following global promotional activities for the franchise closer The Hunger Games – Mockingjay: Part 2 – set for release on November 20th 2015. The adaptation will be directed by regular Hunger Games helmer Francis Lawrence, written by Peter Craig (writer of the Mockingjay films) and produced by Hunger Games producer, Nina Jacobson.

The studio is teaming up with its family of The Hunger Games film-makers and taking on Homer’s paean to ancient Greek heroism and ingenuity.
Lionsgate sources did not elaborate whether The Odyssey would take the form of a single film or a multi-part franchise.
The latter would seem a viable prospect given that the episodic nature of Homer’s epic poem about the Greek king Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War lends itself to an action-packed fantasy spectacle.
Nor was it clear at time of writing whether co-chair of the motion picture group Patrick Wachsberger, who leads the international sales team at the markets, would officially introduce the project to buyers in Cannes.
Francis Lawrence will direct after serving in that capacity for Lionsgate on Catching Fire and the two Mockingjay instalments.

The growing call for a female superhero movie has long featured Wonder Woman at its heart. As the third of DC’s most iconic, successful and recognizable superheroes, her absence from mainstream culture has been increasingly noticeable. While Batman and Superman have both enjoyed reboot upon reboot in popular TV and film, the Amazon Princess has been restricted to the pages of her comic books – save for an all-too-brief 1970s TV show and appearances in relatively obscure animation.
Consequently, we know all about the tragic end of Bruce Wayne’s parents, and the heartwarming adoption story of Kryptonian Kal-El. Few are as familiar with the origins of Wonder Woman – but her upcoming appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice looks set to change all that, as producer Charles Roven has confirmed that this Wonder Woman will be taken from the most recent comic book reboot.

A decade on from Wolfgang Petersen's Troy (adapted from The Iliad), Hollywood is finally getting around to Homer's other great epic, The Odyssey. Warner Bros. have set Stalingrad director Fedor Bondarchuk to work on Odysseus, the story of the titular Greek warrior-king-hero's return home from the Trojan War.300's Gianni Nunnari is among the producers, indicating that, to some extent, this is the same Odysseus that was developing as long as five years ago. There have been plenty of changes between then and now, however. Back in 2009, the screenplay was by Ann Peacock (The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe) and the thrust was not The Odyssey itself, but what happened to Odysseus after he got home to Ithaca. But the latest script is by Jeremy Doner (The Killing), indicating a new focus, and raising the possibility that we may see Odysseus dealing with Cyclops, sirens, Scylla and shipwrecks after all.

If you'll allow me a personal and quite biased recommendation, I'd love to send any Floridians reading to the Orlando Fringe Festival (May 14th-25th) to check out Allen Sermonia or Jenn Remke in An Iliad. Jenn and Allen are friends of mine and I had the privilege of attending a full rehearsal last week in which Jenn performed the entire show (they're doing it in repertory so Allen gets alternating nights) and apparently she's the first female actor to ever perform it!
I've seen Jenn in a few previous plays so I knew she was talented but holding an entire stage by yourself is a true challenge and I'm happy to report she was riveting. By the time the play sunk its hooks in, I forgot I was watching my friend and was just watching "the poet" working her way through numerous character sketches and a retelling of the...

I’m typically not a fan of modern cinematic interpretations of classic television. Let’s face it, Hollywood doesn’t really have the best track record with these types of movies. All I have to do is point to films like Land of the Lost, Speed Racer, Rocky & Bullwinkle, and Dudley Do-Right to make my point. Thankfully though, Mr. Peabody & Sherman doesn’t follow suit and instead rises to the top.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman tells the story of a genius dog and his adopted son Sherman. In order to give Sherman the best education possible, Mr. Peabody (voiced by Modern Family‘s Ty Burrell) creates a time machine called the Wabac (pronounced “way back”) and takes him to various historical moments in the past. Movies of substance are often overlooked by those full of stylish action or vapid rom-coms. High on the endangered species list are remarkable family films that can both entertain and educate. But I’d gladly be proven wrong if audiences went to go see Mr. Peabody & Sherman in theaters.
Those familiar with the classic Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon will remember this dog and boy duo traveling through world history enlightening us on people of great significance and events that turned the world. They didn’t last too long, most only four or five minutes, but they were a trippy, educational break from watching Bullwinkle try to pull a rabbit out of his hat. Throughout the entire run, Peabody and Sherman stepped into their Wabac (or Wayback) time machine just shy of a 100 times and stood beside figures including Genghis Khan, Helen Keller, Jackie Robinson as well as witnessing the construction of the Great Wall of China.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman, a nostalgic reboot of a 1960s cartoon duo, follows Peabody and Sherman as they travel through time and then try to repair the space-time continuum.
The plot takes Peabody, a Nobel Prize winner and overwhelmed father, on a trip to fix what he broke during some leisure travel. In order to repair the damage, Peabody passes through history – hitting up Ancient Egypt, Florence during the Renaissance, the Trojan War and the French Revolution. Both Tutankhamen and Vincent Van Gogh make guest appearances.
Voicing Peabody is Modern Family’s Ty Burrell. Burrell’s costar in the series, Ariel Winter, voices Penny Peterson. Stephen Colbert, Alison Janney, Max Charles and Leslie Mann round out the top-billed voice actors.

See thisThe Grand Budapest HotelWhimsy gets such a crappy rap. Granted, too many directors use it poorly, spraying their sketchily plotted, inartfully written films with cinematic chintz. But Wes Anderson is of an entirely different vintage. He uses massive amounts of whimsy - more than just about anyone else - but the difference is that he knows just how. DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman is about a genius dog and his adopted son who travel back in time at their leisure using their own personal time machine, the Wabac. There actually is a Wabac out there -- it just isn’t a flying red orb that’ll plop you down in ancient Egypt or right alongside the real-life Leonardo Da Vinci. Mr. Peabody (voiced by Ty Burrell) likes to use his Wabac machine to teach Sherman (Max Charles) about history by physically transporting him to some of the most well-known historic events like the Trojan War, a Marie Antoinette-hosted party and more.
