Osees have announced their latest albbum, a synth-pop-inspired project entitled Intercepted Message, out August 18th via In the Red. They have also shared the album’s title track as a lead single. Listen to it below.
In a “bio” for the new album, Osees frontman John Dwyer explained that it’s a “pop record for tired times.” The single — along with its news-inspired music video — supports this theme, drawing on the fatigued energy of politics and society, and channeling it into a blistering blend of punk and electro beeping and booping. In the video, Dwyer serves as the anchor for a dystopian broadcast, and as the world burns down behind his talking head, the weight of the message sinks in. Watch the video below.
From Dwyer’s perspective, Osees’ new music is intended to create a commonplace of sorts. “Social media toilet scrapers unite!” he wrote for the poetic bio.

In the six years since Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, was first introduced to us in 2010, her character has become one of the more fascinating people in the McU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Thanks to her magnetic performances, and strong, subtle writing, Black Widow's backstory is simultaneously mysterious and emotionally relevant to where we find her these days.
As it turns out, there was going to be a little more revealed about her in Captain America: Civil War, but it ended up not making it into the film.
A scene from the junior novelization of the Marvel epic that took the world by storm earlier this year reveals one extremely troubling event from Romanoff's past. Here's an excerpt from the scene in question:
Natasha studied Cap's expression of resolve. Finally, she said, "In Russia, in the Red Room, there were dozens of us. All girls, all young. We lived together.

If it wasn’t already, then Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: Civil War is the talk of the town.
Thanks to Empire’s media blowout, we now have an official name to attribute to Martin Freeman’s newcomer – Everett Ross of the Joint Counter Terrorism Center (Jctc) – not to mention the first high-res shot of Frank Grillo suited and booted as Crossbones. Beyond that, though, the outlet (via Cbm) has also shared a handful of new images featuring most of the cast and, perhaps most interesting of all, an unmasked Black Panther.

Next summer, Melissa McCarthy returns to comedy with her spy movie, aptly titled “Spy.” In the red band trailer above, her character Susan Cooper is dealing with malaise as an under appreciated CIA analyst. From 20th Century Fox: Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster. This will be McCarthy’s third team up with director Paul Feig. She previously worked with him on “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat.” And something of a pattern is starting to emerge. Is McCarthy choosing to play variations of the same bumbling, downtrodden comic relief in every film? Or is this a classic case of type-casting?...

Game of Thrones fans have had ten months to get over the Red Wedding and the brutal slaying of Catelyn, Robb, Talisa, and most of the Stark bannermen. (The rains, they weep, they weeeeeep.) However, the people of Westeros are hardier folk than us, because it’s apparently been just a few weeks since the big event and no one’s making a peep about it besides poor Sansa. Everyone else seems too caught up in preparations for the next showstopper wedding: Joffrey and Margaery’s. Which will clearly go off without a hitch, if Olenna Tyrell has anything to say about the jewelry choices.Still, the opening scene of “Two Swords” made it clear that the massacre has reset the stage. Roar! I am a man, I made fire, pointy sticks, rudimentary tools and the wheel. All on my own, honest, no help from women… okay so we all know that’s a load of rubbish.
The stereotype of manly manliness is quickly dying a death though, replaced by styles of the metrosexual or the 14 year-old boy. Justin Bieber, One Direction, or any number of other androgynous half-breeds – these are what’s touted as the next generation’s pin-ups and models to aspire to.
Sure we still don’t have it as bad as the female of the species – where it seems the message is ‘be thin or count slimming points until you die trying’ – but more and more the hairy-chested and rough-handed man of yesteryear is being forgotten. If your shoulders are wider than a child’s coat-hanger then don’t bother trying to find a well-fitting shirt.

Guilty of Romance
Directed by Sion Sono
Japan, 2011
In Guilty of Romance, Sion Sono’s female protagonist, Izumi, is established as submissive. This quality permeates throughout the film and especially in the early scenes, she is presented as a docile and obedient housewife compliant to all of her husband’s desires. Sion Sono exaggerates and extrapolates on this quality, building his narrative around submission, masochism and sadism and one woman’s descent into depravity.
Every morning Izumi wakes up, makes sure her husband’s slippers are in the perfect position for him to slip into without a thought and she prepares a lavish breakfast for him. Before he leaves for his long day of work, he hands him a shoe-horn and kisses him goodbye. He leaves the home and she arranges his slippers once again so that as he merely walks into them at the end of the day when...
