Production designer Nathan Crowley tells us about his first movie with Christopher Nolan – 2002’s Insomnia, and its chilly outdoor filmmaking.
Having broken through with the low-budget thriller Memento (2000), Christopher Nolan made his Hollywood debut with Insomnia in 2002 – a remake of the Norwegian film of the same name. Starring Al Pacino as a quietly guilt-ridden LA cop investigating a murder in an Alaskan fishing town, Insomnia was also lit up by supporting performances from Hilary Swank as a rookie officer and the late Robin Williams as a shifty potential suspect.
Although some filmmakers may have regarded Insomnia as a work-for-hire gig, Nolan brought all his skill and attention to detail to bear on the movie, using his expanded budget (some $46m versus Memento’s $5-ish million) to make a measured, stunning-looking thriller. (Cinematographer Wally Pfister’s early shot of a plane flying over Alaskan wastes is quite a sight on a big screen.

Clear the runway! It’s time to revisit Zoolander… Directed and co-written by Ben Stiller, the film focuses on Derek Zoolander, a slow-witted supermodel, who becomes embroiled in an international conspiracy to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia by the top people in the fashion industry, namely Jacobim Mugatu and Derek’s agent Maury Ballstein, before he can pass progressive labor laws in his country that would harm their businesses. Zoolander is recruited as a pawn and brainwashed into killing him during a fashion show. If that wasn’t enough, Derek faces an identity crisis due to his declining popularity, his family’s embarrassment of his occupation, and his search for a higher calling in life besides being ridiculously good looking. Thanks to his friend and eventual love interest, journalist Matilda Jeffries, Derek becomes aware of the planned assassination plot. Once Derek squashes his beef with competing male model Hansel,...

When Brayden brings Tariq in as an intern at his family’s hedge fund Weston Holdings, the drug business expands beyond Stansfield and the streets onto Wall Street, while Tariq is also shown an alternate, legitimate path to success.

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

Out of Death is the latest Emmett/Furla production, a company who seem to be following the Pm Entertainment model of churning out action movie after action movie, with actors who are either long-term mid-carders or, like Willis, are in the twilight of their career. I’m not complaining. There was, for quite some time, a distinct lack of mid-budget original action movie fare made in the US. Of course there are the many Dtv franchises that Universal 1440 put out: Behind Enemy Lines, The Marine, Death Race, Sniper, etc. but not much by way of original storytelling. "I am offering you a way out." Good Deed Ent. has released the first official Us trailer for an indie WWII action thriller titled Enemy Lines, a shortened version of "Behind Enemy Lines" (which was already used for the 2001 film). In the frozen, war torn landscape of occupied Poland during World War II, a crack team of allied commandos – a British squad is matched with an American officer – are sent on a deadly mission behind enemy lines to extract a Polish rocket scientist from the hands of the Nazis. Starring Ed Westwick, with John Hannah, Tom Wisdom, Corey Johnson, Ekaterina Valdimirova, and Pawel Delag as Dr. Fabian. This looks like like your standard WWII action thriller with all the usual war movie tropes, and Nazis, plus a few big tanks and shoot outs. Doesn't seem particularly unique, but still might be worth a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Anders Banke's Enemy Lines,...

Netflix has teamed with director McG for alien invasion sci-fi adventure film Rim of the World.
McG, otherwise known as Joseph McGinty Nichol, has been keeping himself busy, both as a director of action flicks and as a television producer for, up until recently, shows like Supernatural, Fox's beleaguered, currently on-the-bubble Lethal Weapon, and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, and is currently developing a TV series adaptation of the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger spy actioner, True Lies. However, the fruits of his film directing resume keep heading to streaming giant Netflix, and one such project, called Rim of the World, will be no exception.

The Manuscript, a new thriller from director John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines) has just landed Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman as the film's star.
The cat and mouse-style thriller was written by Louis Rosenberg and Joe Rosenbaum. It centers on a jailed genius convict (Freeman), who leads a book editor, through clues in his memoir, to the $20 million in missing diamonds he stole years earlier. As the junior editor gets closer to finding out the truth about the mystery, he falls into a greater criminal ploy that leaves his life in danger.
It's always good to see Freeman land a good meaty movie role. This sounds like it will be a great project for him to be a part of. The Manuscript is scheduled to begin shooting this October. ...

Disappointing news out of Human Resources this morning: Fox is letting Linda From Hr go.
The network has opted not to move forward with the Lauren Graham-fronted comedy pilot, our sister site Deadline reports.
RelatedLauren Graham Solves Gilmore Girls Revival Mystery: ‘It Was [Spoiler]’
Linda‘s fate was essentially sealed last week when the unconventional sitcom failed to secure a series order ahead of Fox’s upfront presentation. Network brass, however, said the pilot remained in contention for the 2017-18 season. That is no longer the case. And there are apparently no plans to shop Linda around to another network/outlet.

Last October, fans of MTV's Scream series were given an early Halloween treat when the network announced that the show had been renewed for a third, albeit shortened, season, and now it's being reported that the series could reboot with a new plot and new characters.
Deadline reports that MTV and Dimension TV are considering focusing on a different story in Scream Season 3 after following high schooler Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) and her Lakewood friends as they tried to survive a masked killer in the first two seasons (and a Halloween special).
No official confirmation has been made for these plans, so it's uncertain if a rebooted story will actually be featured in season 3, but Deadline reports that the cast is being allowed to take on other acting roles, with Fitzgerald recently coming on board Fox's Behind Enemy Lines pilot episode.
